Definitive account covers every aspect of steamboat's development: its construction, equipment and operation; the organization and conduct of steamboat transportation as a business enterprise; the hazards and amenities of shipboard life; steamboat races on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers; collisions, explosions and fires; the rise of competition; the ultimate decline, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Economic and Technological.......2005-10-27
I was hoping for a least a modicum of color or human interest, or some detail of what the personal dimension of steamboat travel must have been. Regretably, there is quite alot of information about boilers, water displacement, rates for moving merchandise, and every other dry statistic to bore a non-specialist. The sub-title says it all, and I should have paid attention.
Surprisingly interesting and fun reading........1998-04-20
I highly recommend this book. I was assigned Steamboats on the Western Rivers in a graduate level course at University of Missouri-St. Louis about ten years ago. I'm now re-reading it for the second time...it is just that good!
I was glad to see it reprinted in paperback. When I first read it I had to get it through inter-library loan from Rolla, Missouri...there were no copies in St. Louis or Chicago! This new printing is most welcome.
If you have an interest in Westward Expansion, the Civil War, or the growth of technology then this book should be on your "must read" list.

Book Description
For the first time ever, the #1 New York Times bestsel-l-ing authors reveal how to actually speed up and max----imize the return on invest--ments to achieve total fin---ancial independence. Most people think that simply getting a modest return on one's investments is going to take care of them forever, right through their golden years of retirement. But for lots of invest----ors, waiting-and hoping-for a 10% return on their stocks, bonds, and mutual funds is turning out to be a long and perilous wait. In this startling new book, Robert Kiyosaki shows how one can velocitize their money in such a way that they can quickly achieve financial wealth with extraordinary returns and amazing growth. Sound too good to be true? It's not-and Kiyosaki and Lechter show how anyone can make the move right now. H The eighth book in the series, RICH DAD'S WHO TOOK MY MONEY?, follows the success of the previously published titles-Rich Dad Poor Dad (Warner, 2000), The Cashflow Quadrant (Warner, 2000), Rich Dad's Guide to Investing (Warner, 2000), Rich Dad's Rich Kid Smart Kid (Warner, 2001), Rich Dad's Retire Young Retire Rich (Warner, 1/02), Rich Dad's Prophecy (Warner, 10/02), and Rich Dad's Success Stories (Warner, 10/03)-which have sold more than five million copies combined. H The Rich Dad Poor Dad books are perennial New York Times bestsellers and have also appeared on The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, USATODAY, and countless other business bestseller lists. H Robert T. Kiyosaki is a tireless promoter who continues to get his words of financial advice out to mainstream consumers through his bestselling books, board game, electronic game, and national seminars. H Available as a Time Warner AudioBook.

Too Much Fluff.......2007-09-30
Leverage. Imagine "turbocharging" your finances.
You can do this in the commodity markets, the currency markets, stock options and real estate. And as long as the market goes up (or down, if you are selling the market short) you win. BIG. This is fast money, managed responsibly.
Investing in something and ignoring it is a good way for your money to walk away. Putting your money in the bank or depending on a money manager to mind the store for you is the equivalent of having Colonel Sanders watch your chickens. This, is slow money.
It's your money, and it's best you learn how to manage it. Great. So, how DO you manage your money?? Hmmmmmmm we still don't know.
I understand Robert's argument on this: He avoids specifics because there are 10000 ways to manage your money. Unfortunately, I think most of them are the WRONG way! So who's going to show you the right way? It depends. The hard part is, which way is the right way for you? (now there I go, being vague!)
Are you aggressive or passive, by nature. Are you creative, or diciplined?? What is your definition of risk, and how much risk are you willing to take on? The answers to these questions, combined with some strong financial training will give you the answer to these questions, but you won't find the quick answer here.
You will, however find some great insights; clues on where to look for good investments, and concepts on being a great investor. Clues, that's all. You still have to do the research and legwork. Nobody here is going to tell you what to do with your money.
If you don't know what is a good investment, hire a financial consultant...one who doesn't sell investments on the side. Let them research your investment opportunities for you.
Unfortunately, this book could have been written in less than 100 pages. My copy had 242 pages.
One of Kiyosaki's Best!.......2007-06-11
I loved this book! It was recomended by a close friend that is like my rich dad, I've read his others, but this one is great as far as people needing to know where their money is going. I also recommend all of his other books as well. It is a must buy for people willing to financially free themselves!
Not useful at all.......2007-05-11
Same thing gets repeated over and over without a real insight of any thing. Waste of time.
Avoid this book!!!.......2007-03-06
I cant believe Kiyosaki is getting rich writing this garbage.
In the book,he laughs at the general advice of "have a diversified portfolio, invest for the long term, buy and hold".He says plenty of times how wrong that advice is.He also repeats over and over how millions of people lost billions of dollars during the Bear Market of 2000-2002.
What Kiyosaki forgets to say is that the people who LOST money, were the ones who SOLD their equity investments during or just after the technology bubble. He also forgets to say that,in fact, the people who followed the:have a diversified portfolio, buy and hold, and didnt SELL,not only those people didnt lose a single penny, but now,in 2007,those people have earned lots of money.
If you want to know how REAL rich people invest, you should read "The Millionaire Next Door" and "The Millionaire Mind",by Thomas Stanley.A serious study about how real millionaires invest.Millionaires that followed the buy and hold strategy.
Also,if you want to know how stocks work for the long term, read"Stocks For The Long Run",by Jeremy Siegel: a great work, showing empirical data with historical study on how the stocks work for the long term.
Avoid Kiyosaky,he is a charlatan who gets richer and richer selling his books.
I have read other books on the issue much more useful.......2007-01-09
The book spends first half of it explaining why people is so critic with the marvellous principles of investment criteria that are going to be explained.
The second half explains why other criterias of personal saving-investment are not appropiate.
Appart from some unchained and undetailed principles of inevestment such as "move your money fast from one investment to another" that do not have any link with a more general theory all of it is useless.
I bought it on third party advice and it is my opinion.
Regards,
Enrique.

Book Description
Valued for their towering stature, strength, and endurance, the draft horse played an essential role in the building of Canada. They were the main source of power on early farms, able to do the heavy work that has since fallen to their mechanical replacement, the tractor. Although far less common now, these heavy horses have re-emerged on the world stage thanks to the efforts of a few devoted breeders.
Historian Grant MacEwan celebrates the contributions of the magnificent Belgians, Clydesdales, Percherons, Shires, Suffolks, and locally bred Canadiens as well as the dedicated people who made them famous. He brings to life the history of these gentle giants from their arrival in Canada as work horses to their current popularity in national and international showrings.
Filled with archival and modern photographs, this is a beautiful tribute to a noble and hard-working animal.

Book Description
Imagine awakening in a castle. You slip out of your poster bed, open french windows and step onto a stone balcony. You take in the view of surrounding vineyards that slope down to a quaint tile-roofed village in the misty river valley below.
This isn’t a dream. You can actually spend the night in an authentic French château or manor house, one with all the personal care of a bed-and-breakfast. For centuries, the country’s small châteaux have remained secret, closed to all but the families of the owners. But in recent years, in efforts to generate revenue for preservation, many families are throwing open the doors and inviting the public in to stay. French Country Hideaways takes you inside 35 of these hidden gems where you can experience true French country living.
At these châteaux d’hôte you will meet the owner-innkeeper and get to know the individual spirit of the place. These off-the-beaten-track estates were selected because each possesses a unique bond to the land. None of the properties has more than fifteen guest rooms, and most offer table d’hôte meals in the evenings that showcase the specialties of the region. France remains the number one European destination for Americans, and its three most popular regions are the focus here. Gloriously photographed by Franco-American Stephanie Cardon and complete with listings for recommended nearby restaurants and activities, French Country Hideaways is a wonderful guide for those planning or just dreaming about a visit to these enchanted landscapes.
Customer Reviews:
LOVE THIS BOOK.......2007-02-26
This is a great book for someone who is thinking of staying at a private French chateau or at a country manor. The book is divided into different regions of France, beautifully illustrating both the exteriors with their stunning views as well as the interiors of these places. One learns some information about the current owners of these charming dwellings. For each residence, there is a list of places to visit recommended by the owners. At the back of the book there is useful information on each chateau or manor such as the address, phone number, fax number, and often email address and website. This is a great travel aid for someone who planning a special vacation in rural France. Great decorating ideas too!
Nice photos of French Country Chataeaus & Manors.......2006-11-02
I can only comment on the pictures in this book because I haven't had time to read the text lately. The pictures of the exteriors of the chateaus and manors are very well done. There are some nice photos of the interiors - what one would typically expect in a book of this title. Nothing was surprising and I wouldn't exactly call the interiors fabulous. For truly fabulous interiors I would suggest: The French Chateau by Christiane de Nicolay-Mazery & The French Country House, also by Christiane de Nicolay-Mazery.
Be a Houseguest in a French Chateau..........2005-12-22
Do you like to dream of travel? Or do you really go to France, leaving the beaten track to experience the very best countryside, cuisine, elegance and hospitality? Either way, this stunning book is perfect for you!
Casey O'Brien Blondes has found, meticulously researched, and visited 36 authentic chateaux and manor houses that welcome travelers. More than that, she describes the spirit and character of each place so vividly that you can practically smell the pungent rosemary in the kitchen or the antique roses you might find on your bedside table. While soaking up the history of the place or meeting the family, you will revel in the beauty of Stephanie Cardon's incandescent photographs. This is also an unusual and glorious resource for interior designers, filled with color and charm from austere to cozy.

Book Description
The terraced hillsides, rocky capes, and secluded coves of the French Riviera provide some of the world's most spectacular garden settings, and its delightful climate has drawn legendary figures in the arts, literature, and international society since the eighteenth century. In this beautifully designed volume, Louisa Jones turns her gardening and literary talents to the magnificent gardens of the French Riviera, some beloved by visitors for over a century, but most private and hitherto unphotographed. The author's love of plants and gardening really shines through in the text that weaves history, charming anecdotes, and a detailed description of the gardens and plants featured, from the Rothschild villa to the rustic vigor of a well-tended olive grove. Abundantly illustrated with stunning photographs by Vincent Motte, and complete with a list of gardens to visit as well as a buyer's guide to the best nurseries and plant suppliers in the region, Gardens of the French Riviera is a marvelous gift for any garden lover planning to visit the South of France.
Book Description
Michel has a story to tell. It's about his father, an exquisitely common man whose very ordinariness is a source of grave embarrassment for the boy. It's also the story told to him by his uncle, who shared a family secret with the child in the flickering black and white images of a Sunday matinee. Years before, in the bitter years of World War II, during the Nazi occupation of France, two brothers found themselves at the mercy of a German guard following an explosive act of resistance. Thrown into a deep pit with a small group of terrified prisoners, the men are told that one of them will die by dawn to serve as an example for the others. It's up to the prisoners to propose who will be sacrificed. But in the middle of the night, the guard returns with an extraordinary proposition of his own. A novel of revelation, innocence and ignorance, of the power of language and the strength and complexity of family, In Our Strange Gardens is a fable of nuance and power, a mesmerizing addition to the literature of war.
Customer Reviews:
A Delightful Surprise.......2004-11-08
I wasn't sure what to expect when reading "In Our Strange Gardens". It has the depth of a large work of fiction, but is intricately told in a short amount of pages. Michel Quint crafts his story through flashback, demonstrating the powerful role memory plays in shaping our lives.
"In Our Strange Gardens" is the recollection of the author - the memory of his family and the secrets that shape the lives of his father and his uncle. During World War II, his father and uncle were held prisoners and forced to make terrifying decisions that would affect their lives as well as the lives of others. Quint's characters are vividly drawn, brief and poignant character studies that examine the true nature of all human beings.
The story surprisingly comes full circle, as the author learns the truth behind his father's life, and that of his uncle's. Once I was finished reading, I was tempted to start over again to see where this circle had all begun. It is a tender and sweet memorial to the ties that bind us to family and the decisions that shape our lives.
Phenomenal!.......2004-10-30
Some stories are so well written that they are one of those books that make you lie awake at night pondering. These are the books you tell your friends that they have to read. "In Our Strange Gardens" is one of those books. Having family members who survived the Nazi atrocities of World War II, this book really hit home for me.
Although only 80 pages long (unless you read the French translation too), the story is very thorough. A story does not have to be long to be good! The main character, Michel tells the story as told to him by his father's cousin, Gaston. Michel's father, Gaston, and two other men are blamed in an act of sabotage against the Nazis. From a historical perspective, people do not usually survive once they are accused by the Nazis. The story of survival gives Michael's father and Gaston a new perspective on life. It also changed the foolish light Michel saw his father in.
Few books attain the status of international bestseller. There is a reason this one did. It is that good.
Fast and furious.......2004-04-21
With `In our strange gardens' French writer Michel Quint has created a short miracle with a novella hitting a little more than 60 pages he is able to tell a profound story. Many people write books with over 300 pages and don't tell half of Quint tells here.
It is a story of a French boy whose father is a primary teacher and a clown in his free time. The boy --who also is the narrator-- doesn't like the clown thing, but on one crucial Sunday he'll find out what's behind his father-clown. In a story that involves war, survivor, betrayal and love the truth is unfold.
With a fast prose, the book doesn't require more than a few hours to be read. But the feeling it leaves is timeless. We have read and seen in movies many stories about War and the French Resistance, and besides this one may not be different from what we have known, it is very engrossing and moving. Highly recommended.
Fantastic Surprise!!!.......2003-12-31
Though short, "In Our Strange Gardens" is a gripping story. The power of this book is found in the memory of a father, uncle, and aunt, and in the history from which it was penned.
The story starts at the end with the close of the trial of Maurice Papon then carries the reader through childhood embarrassment, to the Vichy Government in France during World War II, and to the efforts of two young French resistance fighters who are captured by the Nazis and held with two innocent French citizens.
The author recalls the source of his childhood embarrassment of his father who is a respected school teacher by day and a talentless clown by night. The clown persona is the cause of the author's embarrassment.
It's in the evening after the family attends a film that the author, still a young person, learns of the heroic actions of his father, uncle, and aunt. The clown, the shame of his youth, then becomes a source of pride.
The depth of the book is found with the knowledge of the events within. If the reader is unfamiliar with the history of the period then look it up as you go--it is worthwhile and adds tremendously to the story.
The story is only half of the book as there are an English and a French translation within.
It was a fantastic surprise!!!
The best thing about the story is the length........2003-07-15
The description on the flap of the book is much more interesting than the actual story. This novella about two men who, during the second World War, were imprisoned for their participation in an attack on a German controlled power installation in France. The son of one of the captured men tells the story. The father is a schoolteacher who moonlights as a clown. His son is embarrassed by the clown persona. As the story unfolds, the son learns of the importance of the clown in his father's life and eventually wear's the mask himself albeit for different reasons. There is nothing special or highly creative about this text. The book contains the French version and the English translation of the story. As with any story translated from its original language, its difficult to tell if some of the meaning was lost in the translation. Perhaps that is the case with "In Our Strange Gardens". The best thing about this story is the length. Can't recommend this one.

Customer Reviews:
A brief, opinionated, survey.......2002-04-09
I bought this book to help plan a trip to Paris, so I have only looked at the section dealing with that part of the country.
Each garden is covered in a paragraph or two, a page a most. There are few photographs. I believe the listing is fairly complete, at least compared with the other books I have looked at. With 165 pages there are probably 300-350 gardens.
In my opinion many travel guides are rendered useless by making flat, objective comments about everything, so that you can't get a sense of what is really good vs. what is not. This book isn't like that.
Here are a few short quotes:
Parc Andre Citroen: "Not to be missed".
Jardin des Plantes: "... but anyone expecting a garden comparable to Kew will be dissappointed"
Fontainbleau (one section): "This is the largest parterre he [Le Notre] designed but today, without its patterning of clipped box, it is uninteresting"
This is not a coffee table guide. If you are going to France, and want to visit a few gardens, it is a useful reference.
For more photographs and description I prefer the "Garden Lover's Guide to France".

The best man.......2002-12-13
When i read this book i thought that it would be stupid, but i read nad read until it started getting better.I rate this book with 5 stars because it teaches you how to fight and also some fighting moves.I think that if you read this book that you would like it to, thats all that i have to say about that.
Great for Photos but Lacking In Text.......2002-10-29
This book has tons and tons of photos of Bruce Lee but very little text information about Bruce and his life. It is a good overview but I was hoping for something a lot more substantial, especially interviews and such with those who knew and worked with Bruce.
not a bad biography.......2001-05-01
Pretty accurate about Bruce basics. This book is ok, But If you're going to read only one book about Bruce Lee, I strongly recommend THE TAO OF BRUCE LEE by Davis Miller, which is beautiful, funny, sad, inspiring, and surprisingly, a complete pageturner. I know Bruce's story pretty well but when reading Davis's book, there were moments when he actually had me wondering what would happen next. It's one of the best books about anybody or anything that I have read in a long time.
not as enthrawling as I expected it to be.......1999-09-04
It is an excellent book but a little hard to follow

Book Description
This fourth, and fullest, of Abbott's volumes on Oliver Cromwell covers the last three years of his life, from the autumn of 1655 to his death in September 1658. Throughout this time he ruled as Protector, although he apparently came close to taking the crown during the "kingship crisis" of
1657, when parliament, in replacing the Instrument of Government by the more traditional constitution of the Humble Petition, demonstrated that a conservative reaction was emerging in Cromwell's last years. Abroad, England's war with Spain produced Blake's exploits in the Mediterranean and the
capture of Dunkirk for the English by the Anglo-French force. At home the problem of giving stability and constitutional respectablility to Puritan rule remained unresolved, but Cromwell's own stature emerges vividly from this record of his writings and speeches. They provide invaluable insights
into the personality of one of the most complex and controversial characters in English history.
