Customer Reviews:
Really helpful.......2006-01-11
This is such a great little travelling companion. Take it with you in your bag as you do shopping in a different city. If you are already familiar with Vegas like I am, then you know most of the great places to shop, but this will open your eyes to 'new' stores you may not have known existed. With opening hours, phone numbers and obviously addresses, this will keep you shopping for hours at all ends of the expense spectrum - from cheap to expensive. I will always buy these books.

Book Description
A book about retirement that leaves financial worries to other books and simply focuses on enjoyable ways to spend time.
Customer Reviews:
Not the best resource........2007-03-20
I did not find this to be very helpful in planning for my upcoming retirement. To be fair, I have looked at several retirement advice books and not found any to be of much help.
Fun, quirky book.......2007-03-03
Reviewed Kathleen Dowdell for Reader Views (2/07)
"How to Enjoy Your Retirement" is a provocative, well-written book about activities you can do to help you enjoy your retirement. This third edition, published in 2006, keeps pace with constantly changing information that is available at our fingertips. In the introduction, the authors advise taking a personal inventory of what you think you will need or desire in your retirement years. Appendix A contains questions such as: Who Are You?, What Do You Do Well?, Why Are You Retiring?, and How Do You Feel About Retirement? This is a useful tool to evaluate your situation since your life will be dramatically changed with an abundance of free time on your hands (unless you plan on babysitting for the grandchildren). If you do decide to spend lots of time with your grandchildren, Appendix B lists numerous activities that you can do with them. Appendices C through I are broken down into additional resources, activities, tips and suggestions that will aid in the transition into retirement. An appendix dedicated strictly to travel provides names, addresses, and phone numbers of airlines, car rental agencies, cruise lines, hotels, vacation homes, and state visitor bureaus as well as internet sites related to travel. There is a wealth of information in these sections alone.
The meat of the book is found in the list of activities alphabetically listed from A through Z which offers a wide variety of ways to spend free time in retirement. There are over 1000 ideas sure to spark the creative side of any brain. Topics such as Chatty Cathy - "get your Chatty Cathy doll fixed by e-mailing Chatty Cathy's Haven" and Seasonal Contests - "start seasonal contests for guessing when the first measurable snowfall will occur" or this is your life - "make a video for yourself or someone else" are sure to motivate anyone to action for activities and further research.
This is a fun, quirky book that can be used for the serious undertaking of searching for activities to do during retirement or as a book of light reading to pass the time. The book can be used as a resource to brighten your mood on a dreary day or to find further information on the web for a topic you wish to pursue. Authors Tricia Wagner and Barbara Day compiled the A to Z activities from ideas and experiences of friends, family, neighbors as well as themselves because they saw how individuals' perceptions of retirement have changed over the years. They felt a need to address the variety of feelings people approaching retirement experience and to share information to help with these ambivalent feelings. Their success is apparent in this 3rd edition. "How to Enjoy Your Retirement" book would make a nice gift for someone approaching retirement or for someone who has been retired for a few years and wants to add some excitement to life by pursuing new avenues and areas of activities.
Excellent resource!.......2002-07-04
Being newly retired at age 53,I figured I'd better find a way to keep out of trouble. This book is it! There are so many things, even little things, that I had not considered as part of my retirement activities. I have been engrossed in the book since it arrived, and as soon as I get organized,I will be off and running.I would recommend this jewel of a book to anyone who might need a little help getting used to a new life..retirement!!
This book is a keeper!.......2000-04-11
I borrowed this book from the library and liked it so much that I had to buy it. It has ideas, quotes, resource leads, and an index. This book will continue to serve throughout life.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic.......2001-10-27
This is a beautiful book the Barbies are wonderful!! The information content is interesting. This is truly a book for Barbie lovers who like myself cannot afford to buy all the Barbies that we love!
The Best Barbie Book in Existence!.......2001-03-29
I don't collect Barbie dolls -- I collect books on Barbie dolls. And Jane Sarasohn-Kahn's books are my all-time favorites.
"Contemporary Barbie" showcases Mattel dolls from the eighties to the present, in more-or-less chronological order. Thoroughly researched and beautifully photographed, this is the best book on the topic of Barbie dolls. "Contemporary Barbie" is more of an artistic exploration of Barbies than a collectors guide, but this edition contains new, revised information about the dolls issued and their market values. I keep this lovely book on the table, and even non-Barbie-lovers can't resist picking it up and thumbing through it.
"Contemporary Barbie" may disappoint some because it only covers dolls made in and after 1980. But the last twenty years has been a rich period in Barbie history, done justice only by this fabulous book.
Amazon.com
I'd buy this book just for the cover, but the poems are even twice as wonderful. Denise Duhamel has apparently obsessed for months about the Barbie doll phenomenon: all the poems have to do with the "what if " of Barbie attempting to fit into the real world. For example, what if Barbie were codependent? What if Barbie were in therapy? What if she were a religious fanatic? Do you know why Barbie and Ken don't dress in underwear? Why Barbie joined a 12 Step Program? How can you sleep nights without delving into the mysteries of this pop culture darling with the plastic eyelashes?
Customer Reviews:
It's a STITCH!.......2002-05-16
I've read all of Denise Duhamel's collections of poetry. _Kinky_ is the funniest, most focussed, most controlled, least self-absorbed, most accomplished of them all. I've given it to friends and shared it with my family, and we all absolutely love it.
About Time for a Selected . . ........2000-05-12
There's a rumor floating around that Duhamel's got a Selected Poems forthcoming from _________. (I don't want to start a stampede). It's about time. Kinky is yet more evidence that Ms. Duhamel is quickly becoming one of our shrewdest social critics.
Release from Conformity.......2000-01-23
Modern poetry tends to drool over itself when addressing sexuality. Kinky touches on modern american sexuality with a healthy willingness to see diversity in behaviour. There is no lurid, smutty element in this book. It has no deep-seated sense of shame; that is so common as the motivation in modern poems. I felt happiness as the motovation in these poems. A good read.
Ms Duhamel not only deconstucts Barbie but all America.......1999-05-17
First off this is one of the funniest books of serious petry ever written. Second, using Barbie to show all the hypocracy and flaws in our culture and society works wonderfully. Third the empathy the poems show for those of us, for whatever reason, don't fit the Barbie and Ken mode is truly touching.
Excellent.......1999-04-29
The book explores the issues of gender, beauty, religion, and effects of imperialism and corporatization with cutting and savvy humor. A quick and pleasurable read.

Book Description
Hey Barbie, how did you do it? One day there you were with nothing more than a zebra-striped bathing suit and a sideways glance, and next thing you're a pop icon. Everybody loves you, girl. In The Art of Barbie, more than 100 artists, photographers, illustrators, and fashion designers--still playing Barbie after all these years--pay tribute to the world's most popular doll. A stunning visual homage, the book features the work of Calvin Klein, Betsey Johnson, Kenny Scharf, Seymour Chwast, Chuck Jones, Janet Woolley, Karl Lagerfeld, Francesco Scavullo, Rev. Howard Finster, Bob Mackie, Yves Saint Laurent, Warhol, and more--with each offering a fresh, surprising, playful, sometimes provocative vision of the original dream girl. 50,000 copies in print.

great for mature collectors.........2001-12-28
I have collected Barbies for many years and received this book as a gift. I thought it was wonderfully interesting to see many different artists' interpretation of Barbie and her influence on society. I haven't looked at the book for a few years, and I can still picture some of the images - Barbie swimming in French Fries (a play on American diet vs. Barbie's slim figure?) and many dolls watching a huge Barbie face on a movie screen (Is Barbie taking over the world? Should we be on the lookout for Big Barbie?). Overall, I agree that this is a fun coffee table book that would stimulate a lot of interesting conversation.
entertaining.......1999-06-21
I enjoyed (and still enjoy) reading this book. The pictures are great and often amusing. This would be a great coffee table book.
i love this book.......1999-04-15
As a lifelong Barbie fan, I must say- I love this book. It has something for everyone and you'll see something new every time you pick it up. This book is a must have for Barbie Collectors!

Book Description
The increasing interest in private lives and the falling off of coverage of serious news is often described as tabloidization. The essays in this book are the first serious scholarly studies of what is going on and what its implications are. Reality, it turns out, is much more complex than some of the laments suggest. As the contributors show, this is not just a U.S. problem but is repeated in country after country, and it is not certain that the media anywhere are getting more tabloid. What is more, there is no consensus about whether tabloidization is just dumbing down or whether it is a necessary tactic for the mass media to engage with new audiences who do not have the news habit.

The Gardener's Journal.......2000-03-25
A beautiful hard-bound book, lavishly illustrated with unique and colorful block prints. There is a lot of room for notes, and this book makes record-keeping a pleasure with the appropriate quotations. This is a very nice change from just blank pages, or those journals with notes & hints which do not necessarily fit one's needs.

Book Description
During the Depression, the motion picture industry spun timeless fantasies of romance and adventure through the silvery images of its glamorous stars. The movie theatre was a house of dreams; a place of refuge for a population struggling with economic hardship and emotional despair. We continue to study and adulate the icons of Hollywood's golden era, but what do we know of the lives of the hard-working, middle class people that made Los Angeles a unique and thriving community? My Father Was A Bit Player gives us an engaging glimpse into that other, and far more real, Hollywood of the past.
In 1933, Joe Cunningham, a struggling Philadelphia journalist, got his shot at realizing the Hollywood dream. Hired as a screenwriter at Fox Studios, he was confident that he had a lucrative and secure future in the movie business when he moved his large family to California. However, when his contract was not renewed, his ambitions were redesigned by necessity. The family's fortunes consequently began to rise and fall as Cunningham strove to carve a professional niche as a character actor, while continuing his freelance writing career. In this way he kept his lively family afloat and on the fringes of the exciting entertainment industry.
In My Father Was A Bit Player, Joe Cunningham's daughter, Joan, remembers her extraordinary childhood with a clear eye and a fond heart. She writes with beautiful clarity and graceful humor to relate her recruitment to attend Shirley Temple's fifth birthday party; how she came to witness the legendary back lot burning of Atlanta, and what it was like to cheer her own dad's larger-than-life appearances on the big screen. My Father Was A Bit Player vividly evokes a childhood experience that is uniquely American. Joan Cunningham transports us to a time and place that continues to captivate us, as she tells the compelling life story of a man who was far more intriguing than any character he depicted on film.
Customer Reviews:
A Discovery en route.......2001-05-30
In the airport recently, I picked up the Los Angeles Times and came across a review of this delightful book, which will appeal to movie buffs, history buffs or anyone whose family experienced the Great Depression. I quote from Jonathan Kirsch who wrote the review: "The next time a 1930s gangster flick called 'Kid Galahad' shows up on cable, take a close look at the guy in the spectacles and the fedora standing next to Humphrey Bogart. 'If you are familiar with many B movies of the late '30s or '40s,' writes Joan M. Cunningham, 'you would probably recognize my father's face, if not his name.' Joe Cunningham was one of the character actors who are the unsung heroes of old Hollywood, and his brief but memorable career is detailed in an unabashedly sentimental memoir by his daughter. Joan Cunningham recalls a childhood on the margins of Hollywood." The review goes on to highly recommend this fascinating book about the other side of Hollywood during it's Golden Age. I picked up the book and couldn't put it down.
Hollywood life in the not-so-fast lane of the 30s & 40s.......2001-05-09
Just returned from a tip to California where I learned about the Hollywood moguls who founded the movie industry. What a joy, when I returned, to discover this little book--the other side of the coin--that told what it was like for families to live and work amoung the famous in Hollywood of the 30s and 40's. The author takes you back with her to walk the streets where Jackie Cooper was her neighbor and little girls adventured out to get a peek at the big studio lots. You feel the highs of dining at Chassens when dad has a bit part and the lows of moving to a smaller house when bits are sparse. A love story from a daughter for her father, forever a featured player in her life.
Back in time.......2000-12-22
A delightful read. I was transported back in time to an era of "B" movies as seen in the lives of the players, a family that shared love, and tough times with humor and strength.
Inside Hollywood--from a real insider.......2000-12-15
A revealing, surprising, delightful look at bygone Hollywood by one who was there: the daughter of the "Bit Player" in the title. This personal remembrance is sprinkled with the famous--and not-so-famed--personalities and events that have shaped our impression of Hollywood's "golden age." Humphrey Bogart, Edward G. Robinson, Ginger Rogers...they're all here, but in small roles, supporting the star: Joe Cunningham.
Snap this one up for an insider's look at a special time in our nation's cultural history. You'll be rewarded with page after page of anecdotes about life on the edge of the spotlight, and in the middle of how things really were. (Check out the photo of the author at Shirley Temple's birthday party--she's adorable!)
I was fascinated by the star-studded stories, and touched by the loving look back at a uniquely American family. I recommend this to all who appreciate good movies, good writing and good reads.

Great biography of Remarkable Woman.......2002-11-21
I have read several biographies of Constance Markievicz. This proves to be the most complete as well as the most enjoyable read. Haverty does an admirable job of tracing Constance's life from her sheltered childhood on the Co. Sligo estate of her Anglo-Irish family, to her years in the Arts Salons of Paris, to her conversion to a revolutionary leading the charge of Irish Republicanism and Labour. The imagery and language of this book, will make this a treat for the reader. Quite informative and well researched, I highly recommend this book.
Customer Reviews:
Not a Bad Work, But There Are Better.......2002-11-21
Van Voris's biography of Constance Markievicz does an admirable job of attempting to bring this incredibly important and complex woman's life into focus. The book's fails somewhat in that it throws feminist theory and a late-1960s spin in to the mix, and the result is that it detracts from the fascinating story of Constance's life. If you are interested in the life of this remarkable woman, this book is not bad, especially if you read it in conjunction with the other fine biographies available. However, if you are looking to read one book on Contance's life, Anne Haverty's fine biography as well as Constance's own prison letters would be better sources.
