Typical Roach - Excellent guide to the indian peaks.......2000-11-20

As you might expect with a Gerry Roach guide, this one is very good. For those that aren't familiar with Gerry's work, then wait no longer and buy the book. You'll see why...

This one is on par with his excellent 14ers guidebook. I suppose if I had no nitpick (its why we write reviews I guess?) then I'd wish for color photos instead of b & w. Oh and yes my one complaint with Gerry's stuff is that there really isn't any off-season climbing info. However, since many, heck if not most, people do their climbing in the summer it won't be an issue. All in all an excellent guide that is especially strong in its route descriptions, approach details, and climbing information. Also Gerry's classic rating (basically his stamp of an outstanding climb) is included as with the 14ers guide. Don't go climbing in the Indian Peaks without this in your pack.

It's Back!.......2000-07-20

I can't believe climbing guide got republished the same month I moved out of the area. The CU Hiking club almost had to chain down their copy so it didn't get lifted.

Great climbing beta. I never would have tried to climb Skywalker with so much snowpack had the guide been availble at the time.

A Classic Indeed!.......2000-02-10

Everyone who has scoured the used bookstores looking for a copy of this Gerry Roach classic can now rest easy. With this new 1998 edition, it's back and better than ever. It includes topo maps with routes, detailed mileage and elevation gain for each route, and more pictures than the original. Indian Peaks Wilderness is one of my favorite areas in Colorado - it runs the gamut from very accessible, popular hiking trails with spectacular scenery to the pure wilderness experience. Gerry's enthusiasm and love for this area come through loud and clear in this definitive hiking and climbing guide to IPW.

Disappointing.......2007-07-26

I was disappointed that this book dealt very little with late retirement planning. It mostly concentrates on getting out of debt.

Feeling ripped off.......2007-06-08

After many sleepless nights worrying about how I will ever retire with my current debt structure and absolute lack of any savings, I began researching the subject.

The title caught my eye, as it's my predicament too. I thought I would get some sage advice or at the very least a few tidbits to get me on the right track. Unfortantely, this book does not deliver. I already bought a new car. The old one cost over 7,000 a year to maintain. It was a Volvo. I have no access to a 401k.

The book is just worthless and a waste of my money. I see the only way out is to self-publish. At least I've done enough investigating to see what a person must do. I suppose I could now publish a worthwhile book explaining what we can do and more importantly, how.

If I could have given 0 stars, I would have.

Great practical advise - must read for college kids starting out.......2007-04-11

This is a great book and the advise contained in John White's book has never been more timely and applicable then now.

Written from true life experiences the author lays out very practical advise to extract yourself from a life debt and living "hand to mouth". No macro-economic mubo-jumbo just straight forward logically laid out financial advise for getting on a sane finacial track.

I believe if young people apply the principles laid out in John L. White's book they can avoid many of the consumer credit/debt pitfalls that are ruining the US economy. I feel so strongly that I'm insisting my college age kids all read John's book.

Take control of your paycheck!.......2007-03-03

A great book that is both entertaining and easy to read, yet teaches you the important life lessons that you usually don't get in school or at home. The author shares his experiences from a wide variety of jobs so that most readers will be able to find something to relate to. I especially liked how each chapter ends with some advice or insight that the reader can put into practice immediately. I had never thought about the idea that I am selling hours of my life to an employer so I can get a paycheck. How I choose to spend that paycheck will determine whether I control my financial destiny or whether I will be a slave to my "stuff".
Can't wait for the next book from this author!

Beware of Self-Published "How To Books" - and this is one of them!.......2007-02-17

As a freelance writer myself, the first thought that occurred to me before I was halfway through this book was, how in the world did this guy find a publisher? At the very least, any "how-to" book worth half its salt should provide specific, detailed instructions on how to go about accomplishing the task set forth in its title. Instead, this book strays off topic. Instead of explaining how to get out of debt, most of its pages discuss how to buy a used car, an existing home, used furniture, and cut down on simple expenses such as candy bars and cable tv. Nevertheless, I perservered through it before making a final judgement.

After finishing it in less than an hour, I am thoroughly disgusted. This book offers so little in the way of practical solutions, I feel entitled to a refund. A quick search online reveals that the publisher, Everlove and Bohannon is owned by the author, John White, and apparently has produced only one title - this one. What does this tell you? If anyone can write a truly valuable book on the topic of digging out of a middle-aged financial crisis, they will be able to sell their proposal to the highest bidding publisher, rather than self-publish.

The only saving grace of this book is that it doesn't offer any really bad advice. It offers a lot of good sentiment about the mindset of frugality, and the appendix lists some very good books on money management.

For anyone who is in serious financial trouble with a steep ratio of unsecured, high interest credit card debt and little in the way of assets (i.e.; home equity), however, I strongly urge you: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY buying this book!! If you can avoid this and 9 other books like this one, written by self-proclaimed and self-published experts, you will have saved yourself $150.

Note to the author: Mr. White, as a writer myself, I normally adhere to my grandmother's sage advice - say something nice or nothing at all. You have written on a subject that is too important, however, and it affects millions of people - debt management is far too complex and life-changing to be to be skimmed over and treated with platitudes. If you ever want to rewrite and revise, I strongly suggest that you offer the reader a basic threshold diagram explaining debt to income ratio, and the tipping point at which bankruptcy (Chapter 7) must be carefully weighed and considered, as opposed to seeking help through Consumer Credit Counseling Service. Otherwise, your book is akin to a first aid manual that makes no mention of CPR.

Wonderful pictures. For the price, you can't beat the quality of this book. The information is given in short simple decriptions; you're not going to learn to be a master gardener reading this book. It is as if you are peaking over a neighbor's fence and sharing ideas. If you like to save seed catalogs because they are so pretty then you need this book.

Not Enough Stars.......2007-05-03

Au contraire, the book is extremely detailed and makes use of all the letters that Lawrence Harvey wrote his family. Anne Sinai reads between the lines and shows us that Harvey was indeed pretended to have been known as "Larushka" as a child, but he dared not sign letters to his family with that endearing diminutive, because he made it all up, God knows why.

His ambition and his sexual predilections made him frantic to be loved, and the early part of the book, where he leaves SA and goes to London to find work is quite moving in its clear-eyed case study of a young man on the make. No wonder he did so well, later on, playing Joe Lapmton in ROOM AT THE TOP. Joe's ambition and lying ways could have been patterned on Harvey's life. He seems to have been attracted to a, cute guys, b, older rich guys, and then c, older women who were fair and severe with him, just as his mother was. His marriage to Margaret Leighton is finally explained in several incisive Sinai chapters here, as well as his long term love affair with the much older soubrette Hermione Baddeley. When he became an international star with ROOM AT THE TOP, he just seemed to live more frantically, perhaps because he was under increased scrutiny and could now only rarely have a "night out with the boys."

James Woolf, the bouyant film producer who took Harvey under his wing and made him a huge success by careful placement, flying him to Hollywood over and over again until Warner took an option, winds up as the hero of the book, the one man who never let his boy down, and whose death spelled the end of Harvey's brief stardom. Sinai tells us innumerable anecdotes about the stars Harvey was involved with, but even more tantalizing are her accounts of the movies he wound up abandoning, including one which would have cast him as the man torn between Lana Turner (!) and Jennifer Jones (!!!!), a hot seat if ever there was one.

Highly recommended even though, once he becomes a star, Sinai rushes through the remainder of his career as though the house was on fire and she had to finish the book quickly to get a pail of water. He was so great--or so bad--that he deserves a slower pace, something more Mediterranean, not this Coney Island roller coaster of a climax.

Love the Actor - Hate the book.......2006-02-13

I was very happy to see a book about one of my favorite movie actors.

It was maddening that it was written by his siter-in-law, who obviously has an ax-to grind.

You might get the facts, but not the truth from this "Biography"

See his movies instead of paying for this junk, as I have.

Room at the Top, Manchurian Candidate, Summer and Smoke etc.

It is odd that she does not reveal the nature of her relationship to LH in the narritive----

I suggest reading it if you would like to know names dates etc., but do not expect a balanced insightful portrayal of an artist, that this author probably was resentful of.

Wonderfully researched book about a faded star.......2004-03-19

I first came across Laurence Harvey in the early '90s, when my seventh grade history class was shown John Wayne's "The Alamo". He was playing Col. William Barret Travis, and I remember thinking, "Wow! He's pretty good." It was some years later that I encountered "The Manchurian Candidate". Again, I was struck by how well Harvey handled the role, this time of a brainwashed assassin. He now seems to be almost a one-hit wonder (he was nominated for an Oscar only once, for "Room at the Top").

This biography by Anne Sinai, Harvey's sister-in-law, reveals a great deal about his brief but unquestionably "colorful" life. While it is interesting to see how he rose up from an obscurity in a Jewish community in South Africa, it is also easy to see why many people who worked with him ended up severely disliking him. His personality (especially in his early life) was a mixture of cut-throat ambition and downright arrogance, and he was known for leading a very extravagant lifestyle. But on the flip side, he also could be funny, generous, and caring. And there's no denying he had talent. The irony lies in the fact that, despite striving for the top, he never really managed to stake his claim there.

The book is fairly long and isn't a light read, but it is very well researched and written. I would have liked more information about his experiences working on a few films--namely "The Alamo"; Col. Travis will always remain my favorite of his roles--but Sinai provides a good chunck of information nonetheless. For those who are interested in the olden days of Hollywood stars, or (like me) are interested in an actor the world seems to have forgotten, then this book is worth your while.

Richard II (1377-1399) was deposed and probably murdered at the end of a dramatic kingship characterized by the struggle between royal authority and the power of the great magnates of the land. Richard faced down the leaders of the Peasant Revolt of 1381 when aged only 14 but found the
magnates much harder to vanquish. 1399 saw the nadir of his royal power in the Merciless Parliament. This attempt to oust power from the king seems to have spurred Richard into recovering the royal prerogative but the king went so far beyond 'good governance' that his final two years in power
became known as the 'tyranny'.

The record of his reign was muddied by hostile chroniclers such as Walsingham and the anonymous monk of Evesham, and these distortions went on to be propagated by Shakespeare, leading Henry Hallam to write, in 1818, that 'the reign of Richard II is, in a constitutional light, the most interesting
part of our earlier history; and it has been the most imperfectly written.' This collection of essays by leading historians aims to redress this balance and present a more accurate version of the king's 'governance'.

Drawing on scholarship from both sides of the Atlantic, the re-evaluation of Richard's reign begins by deconstructing the distortions of chroniclers and the myth of the king's insanity. It goes on to examine the personal rule of the king, the role of his council and the court, and his relations
with Londoners and the provinces, with the Church and the higher nobility. Other essays go beyond England's borders to look at the European perspective on trade and warfare, and on the marriage alliance between Richard and the house of Luxembourg. Finally, scholars of literature and the fine arts

Third, in an increasingly knowledge-based economy, the supply of workers with the requisite skills and penchant for creativity will determine how much innovation takes place and how it is used to enlarge market shares. The situation requires reinforcing secondary and tertiary education, which influence analytical skills and the aptitude to innovate. "Good House Hunting" - A great help to me and my customers!.......2005-06-10

I've come to realize over the 12 years of selling real estate what an emotional experience looking for one's dream home is, even for those who own several homes. For many people, it makes a statement to family and friends about who they are. Some people get so caught up in the fantasy of finding the "perfect home" that they never buy anything. This is especially true in a rural area where the inventory is limited, lacking charm and "soul" and where most of what gets sold ends up going through extensive renovations.
