Muddy wasn't the word for the interior printing, a huge disapointment after seeing the brilliant cover design. But the interior images were dark and murky at best. Also, only two hotels in Ireland were mentioned -- why bother?. Avoid this poorly printed, uniformative waste of a tree. I sent this back for a refund. The Smith's should find a new printer.

This text addresses the basic principles that underlie marketing and how e-business marketing techniques are fundamentally changing the traditional marketing process. Use this text to prepare students for careers in a rapidly changing environment of dot-com and brick and mortar strategies; non-linear, online, interactive advertising; new product development and distribution processes; and reliance on databases. This text is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate level courses in e-commerce.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to the World of E-Business.......2001-02-12

This book marks a significant improvement in the universiy level texts on the revolution in business practice and orgranizaiton brought on by the Internet. The material is well presented and I use it for an introductory class in e-commerce and e-business marketing. This is a very difficult topic to work in as it changes so quickly, at least that is the politically correct way to phrase this. The reality is that the e-commerce revolution has many more casualties to take before it loses the "e-" and become just the way we do business. Teaching e-commerce to the employees of those future casualties requires a level of sensitivity that most book efforts to date have simply avoided. The usual model is to focus on the technology and to deal with the whole thing as another sales channel in the marketing department. Kleindl goes a good bit farther in suggesting the fundamental orgranizational changes that are inherent in becoming an e-business. I would have been happier if he had gone a little farther and more clearly stated that the camels nose is already in the tent and the whole thing is going to come down sooner than we think. But the fact that he went as far as he has may explain why this book is so hard to purchase. I have to have my students purchase is directly from Amazon as the Unversity of Hawaii Bookstore was told that it has not been published. Interesting.

Brad Kleindl's "Strategic Electronic Marketing" brings the e-business revolution right home for anyone to understand. At a diminutive 300 pages Kleindl strikes the ideal balance between being "small and accessible" and "detailed and meaningful."

In addition to regular text, Kleindl also utilizes case studies as well citations of actual Internet web sites and businesses to highlight his points. The end of chapter questions reinforces concepts learned and covered during the chapter as well as stimulates critical-thinking.

Among the various real-life companies covered as case studies in the book are: Egghead.com, Dell Computer, Amazon.com, AutoByteTel, IngramMicro, BMW, eToys, CDNow, AT&T, RealNetworks, and many more.

Here are the topics that Kleindl covers:

        1. Introduction to E-Business: E-based marketing, online business models

        2. Understanding E-Business Technology: The Internet, ISPs, and the Web

        3. E-Business Communication: Many-to-many promotion, the AIDA model, Intranets and Extranets, sales force automation, and online advertising

        4. E-Business Distribution Systems: Distribution channels and relationship development

        5. E-Business Value Strategies: online purchasing, service strategies and CRM, b2b commerce, supply-chain management, market-of-one strategy, auction strategy and pricing strategy

        6. Diffusion of Innovations: Innovations, individual adoption, the product life cycle, online communities, acceptance of innovation in business

        7. Information Collection and Use: technologies, techniques and privacy issues

        8. E-Business Strategy: E-business value chain, e-business strategy

        9. E-Business Management: Management and Leadership chain, distance working, organizational hierarchies

        10. Political, Legal and Ethical Issues: privacy, intellectual property, access and equity

Overall, this book is extremely easy to read and more importantly, a great learning tool. This book was used as the text for an e-commerce course I took during the summer of 2002. Whether you are studying this subject independently or whether you are an instructor looking to use this book for your course, you cannot go wrong with Kleindl's "Strategic Electronic Marketing."

                    Book Description

The first comprehensive study of the Constance reforms since 1867, this volume offers new explanations for the frequently alleged failures of the reforms, while arguing that the successes were much greater than historians have generally acknowledged. The author analyses the specific reforms in light of the conflicting interests of reformers; then he probes the conceptual basis of the reforms employing methodology developed by Gerhart Ladner. An appendix offers a new edition of the central source for the deliberations -- the records of the Constance reform committee -- using three newly identified manuscripts. The Constance reformers gathered a rich harvest of late medieval institutional reform thought and imagery. Under the central motto of "reform in head and members," they put long-standing conciliar theories into practice, forging a pragmatic synthesis of hierarchy and collegiality.

                        Book Description

This now classic portrait of Douglas Fairbanks--the swashbuckling original King of Hollywood--was first published in 1940. Long out of print and hard to find, Alistair Cooke's posthumous biography was the first serious consideration of the career of the great silent screen star and husband of America's sweetheart, Mary Pickford. Reissued here in a facsimile edition, The Making of a Screen Character treats, step by step, the course of Fairbanks' career, and sheds light on the mysterious ingredients of screen popularity and on the history of motion pictures generally.

Voices of death, is probably the best book I've ever read. Dr. Schneidman presents in this book the timeless subject of death offering us a rutter that enables the reader to understand and demystify the death phenomenon.

A book that teaches the reader the basic processes of dying with dignity for those who have a terminal illness or have a friend or relative or a known person who is facing diseases like cancer or leukemia.

How to face death with dignity, and what everyone should know in order to give the comfort to a dying person.

Dr. Schneidman, in his unique beautifully writing style, presents the concepts of grief, self-mourning, pre-mourning, and mourning. Deaths by suicide, execution and malignancy, offering us "maps" that helps us to avoid the reefs of life and to make this trip a safe one.

The documents, diaries, letters and suicide notes illustrate the thoughts and give us the real picture of the reality of the human mind when facing death, helping us to understand death as a natural and dignifying part of everyone's passage in this world.

If this book could be classified, I would classify it as a Literary Human Patrimony

The Civil War stands vivid in the collective memory of the American public. There has always been a profound interest in the subject, and specifically of Blacks' participation in and reactions to the war and the war's outcome. Almost 200,000 African-American soldiers fought for the Union in the Civil War. Although most were illiterate ex-slaves, several thousand were well educated, free black men from the northern states. The 129 letters in this collection were written by black soldiers in the Union army during the Civil War to black and abolitionist newspapers. They provide a unique expression of the black voice that was meant for a public forum. The letters tell of the men's experiences, their fears, and their hopes. They describe in detail their army days--the excitement of combat and the drudgery of digging trenches. Some letters give vivid descriptions of battle; others protest racism; still others call eloquently for civil rights. Many describe their conviction that they are fighting not only to free the slaves but to earn equal rights as citizens. These letters give an extraordinary picture of the war and also reveal the bright expectations, hopes, and ultimately the demands that black soldiers had for the future--for themselves and for their race. As first-person documents of the Civil War, the letters are strong statements of the American dream of justice and equality, and of the human spirit.

4 out of 5 stars Be there with Jacob.......2001-01-28

Dr. Hogan takes the reader of this wonderful book right into the Civil War, and even deeper into the life of Col. Greenawalt. You won't want to put it down.

This is a story that will etch itself into your heart. As you read, you will come to know and understand Jacob's feelings on the war, his relationships with his fellow soldiers, and most of all, his intense love for Rebecca. The descriptions of the battles he fought in are so realistic that you'll feel you are there at his side. The pain and longing to see his wife that Jacob feels when he is dying in the army hospital is likewise just as real.

The author of this book did a great service to both the memory of Jacob Greenawalt, and to the people of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, by writing this book. Having grown up in West Newton myself, it was especially moving, but you don't have to be a Pennsylvanian "Wildcat" to appreciate this great story.

5 out of 5 stars much more than love.......2000-11-01

I have read more than my share of Civil War books based upon letters and diary. Most of these volumes begin when the soldier goes to war and pens his first letter home and usually ends with the last letter written either before his muster out or death. Waiting for Jacob, however begins with Jacob's letters from college four years before the war. Letters in which he proclaims his love to his "young miss" as she waits for him at home. The letters amazingly do not end with Jacob's death in 1864, but continue two years later when the nurses that cared for the dying soldier once again reaffirm his love from statements made on his death bed to the grieving widow. I found these letters quite unique and moving, they were letters that keep Rebecca "alive" for the next six decades. The author attempts in this tome, successfully I might add, to weave together different story lines. The first drawn from a "first person" account of the last years of Rebecca, his Civil War widow. This passage is drawn from an interview with an elderly lady, who as a teenage that cared for Rebecca in her last years, as she waited not for Jacob but instead for death to rejoin her martyr husband killed 61 years before. He also vividly narrates the stories told by Jacob's letters. Letters that tell not only war but also of backstabbing fellow officers, and the senseless losses both on the battlefield and of disease caused by incompetent generals. It also included is a complete roster and some personal stories of the 100 men from his hometown of West Newton, PA who he recruits and leads as a Captain. The story of their recruitment is drawn completely from local period newspapers. Most unique to me was the chapter obtained completely from state archive records when Jacob is promoted to Major over a more senior captain (The "War" with Captain Hastings). An incident that forces Jacob to resign his commission (it was rejected) and is moved to write to Rebecca his most heartfelt letter where he proclaims, "I am no Christian." It is my humble opinion that this book would be enjoyed not only by a Civil War "buff" but also one interested in a Victorian period love story. It is indeed a story that does deserve to be preserved forever

5 out of 5 stars Don't wait to read, "Waiting for Jacob".......2000-10-23

In this charming work, Edwin Hogan, captivates the reader with the tender love story set against the background of the American Civil War. Dr. Hogan's research adds depth to the story told in the letters from Jacob Greenawalt to his wife Rebecca. The story will be especially of interest to those living in Western Pennsylvania, as familiar place and family names jump off the pages and even minor characters come alive under his pen. However, the story of love, war, and longing has universal appeal. For those with a particular interest in this period of history, the book adds new details of the contributions made by the people of West Newton and the surrounding area. It is one of the finest books that I have read in quite some time.

This is the first complete edition of the letters and notebooks of actress Mary Devlin, Edwin Booth's first wife, and is the first reference of its kind in nineteenth-century American theatre scholarship. These documents provide a fascinating perspective on Booth, his life, and the development of his career, and include new materials recently uncovered through the editor's research. The volume is also a valuable guide to biograhical information about Booth's father and brother (John Wilkes Booth), and to studies of Mary Devlin Booth and her influence on her husband. In addition, it identifies sources that reflect certain mid-nineteenth-century attitudes and provides a clearer picture of the conventional role wives had in their husband's careers during that period.

His writings have taught countless psychologists and other health professionals about the complexity of suicide, death and bereavement. This collection of his writings spans the entirety of his career and offers a unique insight into the development of his thinking. The material is broken down into five parts: Psychological Assessment, Logic, Melville and Murray, Suicide, and Death and each section includes an introduction by the editor.
Lives and Deaths is a vital resource for those in suicidology and related fields, allowing the reader to sample a variety of selections from Shneidman's work in one compact volume. The book is ideal for classroom use by upper level undergraduates and graduate students in the history of suicidology or as a supplemental text in a general suicidology course. Book Description

More than the fascinating story of Asquith's love for Venetia Stanley, these letters provide a rare inside look at British politics. They reveal a statesman faced with political ruin in the Irish civil war who escaped by leading Britain through the crisis of 1914 and the early years of the
war. Asquith confided completely in Venetia, sharing with her military secrets that were unknown to the Cabinet or to naval and military commanders. He described political intrigues and wrote openly of his colleagues--who include Lloyd George, Churchill, and Kitchener.

                                              Book Description

The Civil War left no Vermonters untouched, and few families free from pain. More than 140 letters -- carefully selected from some 9000 in several archives -- convey in personal terms the combat experience of Vermonters throughout the war. Vermont raised seventeen infantry regiments, one cavalry regiment, three batteries of light artillery and three companies of sharpshooters -- nearly 35,000 soldiers in all. As a result of this impressive commitment, Vermont suffered one of the highest rates of military deaths of any Union state.

A War of the People covers the war chronologically, with editor Jeffrey D. Marshall providing running commentary on both the war overall, and Vermonters' experiences. Supplemented with maps and photographs, it includes many voices -- from privates to colonels, mothers, wives, and best friends, young and old -- writing about battle narratives, camp life, financial advice, family matters, and much more. An African-American soldier from Hinesburgh, a French-Canadian soldier who enlisted in Milton, and dozens of others record their experiences in unforgettable words. Marshall's battlefront/homefront choice of letters provides a deeper understanding of the social and political dimensions that, although secondary to military concerns, were an integral part of Vermont's war years.

I purchased this book as a Christmas gift for hubby! I had no thought of reading it until it arrived at the house! Looks very interesting! After he is done with it I will place it within my reading material. There are pictures through out. Ok, so maybe I will read it BEFORE I give it to him for Christmas! :)

I don't think I can improve on the e-mail I sent to friends and family as soon as I finished the book..... 'I just finished a book called "A War of the People" by Jane's good friend Jeff Marshall. It is a collection of letters from (and to) Civil War soldiers from Vermont. I can't say enough about this book. I feel as if I've just read a great novel, and yet it's all true. Jeff has done a brilliant job of choosing the letters, and many of the letter-writers reappear, as you're taken through the course of the war. The most emotionally wrenching aspect is that Jeff includes a brief but pithy biography of each soldier at the back of the book, listed alphabetically, so that after reading a letter, you can look up the soldier to find that he lived until 1915 and was "wounded ... at Savage Station , June 29, 1862. ... Mustered out June 19, 1865. Returned to Concord and became a farmer. Married Eliza E. Hale (to whom some of his letters are addressed) in 1867." Or that he was "Killed in action at Cedar Creek, October 19, 1864." I found myself biting my nails reading the letters, barely able to keep from turning to the bios in mid-letter to see if the soldier survived the war. These soldiers, most of whom were farm boys, were eloquent nonetheless. I guess you can tell I really, really loved this book, and I highly recommend it. (Jane's family: you know Jeff and may have already read the book, so please forgive my literary euphoria. I just finished it and went right to the computer.) Tom'

5 out of 5 stars Another great Vermont book on the Civil War.......1999-04-11

University Press of New England asked me to review Jeff Marshall's new book, "A War of the People: Vermont Civil War Letters." In the words of Private William Daniels, of Barton, one of the letters included in the book, "I will respond simply." WOW!

Over 140 letters to and from 78 soldiers, from practically every unit Vermont fielded during the course of the war! Letters from all theaters of the war, covering every period of time from the Spring of 1861 to the Spring of 1865! You'll find a governor (or at least his wife), a general or two and some Colonels. But for the most part you'll find common soldiers, their fathers and mothers, their brothers and sisters, their friends. Don't expect these letters to divulge some great heretofore unsolved mystery about the war. These letters aren't about the war; they are about life, about the people, and Jeff has done a great job collecting just the right letters to show the whole gamut of emotions and attitudes the soldiers and their families expressed, and the joy and concerns and pain they endured during the course of the war.

I usually have a hard time carefully reading the introduction and commentary in a book of letters (I want to get to the letters!), but Jeff does a great job of explaining the rationale behind the soldiers' reasons for writing, and has given accurate and relevant background for each season of the war. Its a great read! I hope this is the first of a number of books like it.
