A thorough and descriptive guide that is worth every penny!.......2001-09-13

This book is a great guide for visiting the most popular national parks in the United States. It provides extensive information on parks such as Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Great Smoky Mountains, Olympic, Yosemite and Zion. Repanshek details the pros and cons of each park with candor with helpful comments about what to expect from the weather, wildlife and crowds.

Each chapter focuses on a different park. Within each chapter, he covers such topics as: geology, attractions, directions, fees, safety precautions, hikes, ranger programs, lodging, dining options, and other essentials such as post offices, lost and founds, etc. He writes in the first person, and often makes amusing commentaries about his own experiences and expectations. He does a thorough job covering each park - one can sense from reading that not only has he personally visited these places, but that he has returned to each a number of times and writes with the experience that is so valuable to those on a limited time schedule. He acknowledges that while each park could be a vacation of its own, many people can only spend a day or two at each place. To accomodate such travelers, he includes a section in each chapter on what to do if you only have one day to explore the park. This can be an incredibly useful tool if you are on a tight time schedule.

Frequently in travel guides, one gets the sense that the author is either an avid outdoorsman bent on roughing it, or a once-a-year vacationer who would rather die than sleep in a tent. Not so here - Repanshek clearly addresses both groups. He details all the available campsites in a park, along with his opinions on how clean/quiet/developed each site is; but also lists hotels and motels in the surrounding areas, ranging from the cheapest to the swankiest of lodgings. Same goes for the dining options. I personally appreciated this a great deal - my trip was primarily a camping excursion, but every once in a while we decided to splurge on decent hotels and were grateful for his frankness in describing what we could expect for our money.

My only gripe with this book is that it only covers 15 parks. Of course, due to its level of detail, it would be difficult to cover more. My hope is that Kurt Repanshek considers putting together two or more separate guides, for the Eastern and Western National Parks. He has a great eye for detail and leaves no stones unturned in his comprehensive tour of the American parks. I highly recommend this guide!

I was referred to the One Minute Manager series when I asked someone I considered an excellent manager if he could recommend some management resources. The One Minute Manager Builds High Performing Teams was my first introduction to the series.

The book is written as a conversation between the One Minute Manager (a nameless, faceless character), a curious manager named Dan, and a human resource manager named Maria who brought up the question of how to manage teams versus individuals.

The print is large and there are only a few paragraphs per page, making it quick and easy reading, especially for those who only have time to read a small segment at a time. The dialogues are occasionally dull and a bit pedantic, but the messages come through clearly. And these messages, how to diagnose the development stage a team is currently in and which management style is appropriate for each stage of development, are usual analysis tools for anyone leading a group. The messages from the book can also easily be identified and passed on to group members through a short presentation.

A worthwhile book to look at for anyone wanting to improve team motivation, productivity and functioning.

Kenneth Blanchard turns his attention to small group dynamics and group performance in this, on of the stable of One Minute Manager books.

Academically, the two principal concepts that Blanchard and his co-authors use, are the stages of group development and Situational Leadership. The familiar stages of forming, storming, norming and performing are termed orientation, dissatisfaction, integration and production. Situational Leadership in this context refers to changing leadership styles according to the stage of the group, thereby filling in for process tasks that the group is unable to accomplish for itself.

Groups tend to start in a high-energy, high motivation but low skills and understanding mode of operation. In this stage, directive leadership provides the structure necessary to move forward. The second stage is one of dissatisfaction, questioning of leadership and clarification of roles. As unpleasant as this stage is, we are reminded that conflicts cannot be resolved if they are avoided. A resolving attitude on the part of the leader is exactly what is needed. As confidence and morale return to the group members, they pass hesitatingly into a third stage, termed integration. In this stage, commitment on goals, roles and tasks increases, as well as to the norms, values and processes of the group. A collaborating leadership style that allows control to be shared and facilitates the surfacing of disagreements is critical to the group's continued growth. Finally, the production stage is characterized by high levels of trust, morale, energy and empowerment. The team can pretty much function autonomously, without a leader whose primary purpose is to validate.

Blanchard's strength is his manner of presentation and clarity of relating ideas from disparate sources. The book is a quick read and yet it presents some fairly profound concepts, connecting the dots in a way that reading a collection of "Harvard Business Review" articles can never accomplish. Most of the book is a conversation between Dan Brockway, the director of training at a chemical company, and his mentor, The One Minute Manger. The coordinator of customer service programs, Maria Sanchez, disagrees with the presentation of material for The Essentials of Management course that Dan is coordinating.

Instead of helping Dan convince her that she is wrong, The One Minute Manger allows Dan to observe the functioning of four groups at different stages of development at his own company. The gradual, real-world exposition of the central issues of group dynamics leads into three-way discussions between Dan, Maria and the Manager about the practicalities, pitfalls and variations in group development. The goal is to produce what Blanchard and others have called "Highly-Effective Teams", effectively defined in the early pages.

The intent of the book is to teach and, with two educational doctorates as co-authors, the structure and style is simple to read and flows so logically that it is as easy to digest as Jello. A busy manager can read this book in a single New York commute and keep revisiting it as needed, while his teams evolve. Students can learn and integrate new concepts more fruitfully, as they learn how the pieces all fit together. Participants in teams can quickly get a sense of what they need to do to effectively contribute to the tasks at had, which inevitably include the processes that the group uses to get things done. Anyone reading this book is well advised to realize that this is a brief synopsis and oversimplification of group dynamics and leadership styles. Extended discussions of roles played by participants in dysfunctional groups and extensive elaboration of Situational leadership are found elsewhere and should be referenced when necessary. In the end, drawing on all our creativity and individual knowledge and experience is the path to generating value in a knowledge economy.

Though contributors are biologists, now useful mostly as a document of intellectual history.......2007-08-06

This book, now quite dated, consists of the proceeds from a conference in those heady post-Communist days of the early 1990s. It consists of US and East European biologists discussing problems of transboundary protected areas in Eastern Europe. The obvious subtext to the conference was a bit of scientific and policy imperialism, to inform post-Communist public land managers of the state of the art in the West.

Judged by this book, that altruistic motive seems pretty well justified. The first part of the book consists of American experts discussing US experience, while the rest consists of East Europeans doing the same for their experience. It's painfully clear from a comparison of the two parts just how far many East European land managers fell behind international standards under Communism. The apparent exception is Polish scientists and land managers, who clearly remained part of the international community. Their chapters tend to be the strongest, comparable in quality to the US chapters. Several chapters provide good information about Bialowieza Primeval Forest on the Polish-Belorussian border, for example.

The rest of the book is painfully descriptive and boring. If you want facts and figures about protected areas in Eastern Europe, this is a good source - - but you can probably find the same information on the Internet now. There isn't much to learn about biology or environmental policy in this book because of the huge gap in quality. However, it might make interesting fodder for anyone studying the intellectual history of environmentalism in Eastern Europe, or the spread of western ideas to the East in the early 1990s.

A Good Book for the Reference Shelf.......2000-06-24

I am very happy to have this book in my garden and plant material library. That said, I am left wanting more.

A Garden of Conifers by Robert Obrizok offers good basic descriptions of and cultural requirements for a dozen or so species of conifers. It is an excellent introduction for the novice.

For the more seasoned plantsperson, its greatest value lies in the 63 page checklist with black silhouette images of a fairly comprehensive group of the cultivars, varieties and forms of his selected list, indicating the plant's general shape. Each has a brief discription. If only he had included a picture for each (admittedly an enormous if not impossible task)and a bit more descriptive information ... The anticipated size of the each plant listed in 5, 10 and 20 years would have been very useful. Still, I'm glad to have it.

Hermaphrodite! It's a word which usually invokes snickers or eye-rolling. But for those people born a combination of genders (estimated to be about 1 in 2000), it can be heartwrenching: a life lived in silence, secrets and fear.

Actress/author Katherine Connella steps out of the shadows to frankly reveal her childhood and adolescence growing up intersexed. Deemed a boy a birth (in spite of full female interior organs and irregular genitalia), she fought her whole life to prove what she was: a female. Katherine discusses survival of a number of traumas: incest, medical abuse, mental hospitalization, chemical-induced manic depression and a series of sexual assaults. Yet through it all, she writes with a spirit of humor and a positive outlook.

"I know my life would have been bizarre under any circumstances," Katherine chuckles today. "But being intersexed added an entirely new and dark layer to the big picture."

Intensely personal and moving.......2001-09-20

I've read very few memoirs as utterly revealing and no-holds-barred as Katherine Connella's powerful coming of age story. Born intersexed at a time when the condition was a complete medical mystery (it's only now becoming broadly discussed in the medical community), Connella was raised as a boy, all the while knowing deep down that she was indeed female. Her tale takes you through mental institutions, violence, discrimination, and misunderstanding, yet she clearly tells this difficult tale from a survivor's perspective.

If you're curious about intersexuality and eager to learn about it from a personal rather than a clinical point of view, I wholeheartedly recommend Connella's brave, moving book.
