The man has 80 credit cards! That may seem to be a crazy amount to most people, and it's one at which most financial advisers would shudder, but to do what he wants to do with the industry (save and make money), 80 credit cards--maybe more--are needed.

Scott Bilker has an interesting take on the massive credit card industry: "The banks are at our mercy!" That may seem absurd to those of us who have piled up the average debt of $8,500 or more on a Macy's or Citi Platinum card, but that's his take. He's proven it with over 400 minutes of transcripts of interactions between him or his friends and the credit card companies. There is

This book is simply amazing! I had previously used some of the techniques Scott teaches, but other things he tells you to do blew my mind! The things Scott talks about are easy to do AND can save you a TON of money! I would highly recommend the book to anyone with ANY amount of credit card debt, or even if you have NO credit card debt.

I am in the same field as Scott, and have recommended his book countless times to consumers. With credit card companies raising rates, fees, etc. his advice could not be more timely.

I just interviewed Scott today (8/11/05) on my EverydayWealth Radio program on [...] and he told me how he just got a 10 month old late fee waived! That's practically unheard of.

I can't recommend Scott's book highly enough. You'll easily recoup many times the price of the book if you implement his suggestions.

A valuable book from day one.......2004-05-15

I was shopping for a book that would help me with the credit card debt I have accumulated. I chose this book. It has proven to be very bemeficial to me. It contains a large amount of information your banks don't want you to know. My first night of reading the book, I got up to about page 70 and made my first phone call, with the intent of gaining information about the account and possibly getting a fee reversed. I ended up getting a $50 credit to the account, relatively easily. I cannot praise this book enough! If you need to reduce your credit card debt, this book may very well be your solution.

I had met the author at a wild mustang sale so I was able to connect a face with the experiences she talked about
in the book which made it more entertaining for me. The concerns for her safety and her opinions were similar to how I would think and feel since I'm in the over 40 age category. There were a few typos in the book but those too just made the book more identifiable. I don't know how editing is done but regardless, I could relate, learn and laugh at the contents. Well done!

I cannot express how much fun I had reading this book! It's a journal of the authors life experiences gentling and training a wonderful mustang. The entries in the book make me feel like I was part of the experience. The fact that the entries were not edited made it even more real for me. Anyone even entertaining the idea of adopting a mustang should read this book. I have purchased a couple of copies for gifts to just the right potential adoptors. This truly is a great story....Shows just how deeply man(or woman in this case) and mustangs can and do bond...As a owner of many breeds of horses, including 4 Mustangs, I appreciate her dispelling the myth that Mustangs are not trainable or of any value! And a big high five for her enthusiasm...I for one appreciate the way it reads (the few grammatical mistakes and typos)....It makes the journaling even more realistic! I truly believe if more people interested in owning horses read this, all of them would adopt mustangs and experience the magic bonds that happen with only mustangs.

This book is C.S. Jennings's personal journal of a dream come true-her adoption of a BLM Mustang. She states at the beginning of the journal what it was written with no thought of publication and that she chose to do very little editing. She say that this is not a how-to book but just a simple sharing of her experiences during the first year of working with Shunka Wakan.

It is, however, a very informative book as she shares her training methods which evolved from several sources. C.S. Jennings was 59 when she made the decision to adopt and work with a wild Mustang. She has published the book with the hope that it may inspire others to make their dreams come true.

If I were to make one constructive criticism of the book, my suggestion would be to have if proofread for typos, spelling and grammar errors. If it's worth publishing for others to read, it's worth taking the time; and I think the information in this book is worth making such an effort.

If you like horses and are interested in training wild ones, you'll probably enjoy this book.

C.S. Jennings lives with her husband, grandson, two cats, some chickens, and two BLM Mustangs on a farm in Southern Illinois. She has written mysteries, and this is her first nonfiction book.

As a landscape designer, I use this book almost daily as a complement to Michael Dirr's texts. The line drawings of each plant in youth and maturity provide a better idea of its habit than most pictures ever could. The "Problems and Maintenance" section has helped me avoid many potentially inferior plants, and the "Adaptability" information gives a nuanced understanding of wind tolerance, pH, light and water requirements. Finally, the "Seasonal Interest" symbol provides a finely tuned assessment of the plant's attractiveness throughout the year: I use it to find plants with year-around interest. This is a book for professionals who have to live, and die, by their plant recommendations.

Oh, God. Let's just get it over with and say that EVERYONE ON EARTH IS SECRETLY GAY. EVERYONE. This is one of the stupidest books I've ever glanced through - yes, GLANCED through, since I couldn't stomach slowing down to allow the words to stick in my head. Madsen, who I believe is secretly gay himself, is hellbent on making as many dead people gay as possible. And he can't write. I take particular offense at his chapter on Barbara Stanwyck. She was a brilliant actress and a very private person. Her life was relatively scandal-free. Mr. Madsen, you would be hurting right now if she were alive to crucify you in court. If only I could see that!!!

Entertaining But Sloppy and Occasionally Unsubstantiated.......2002-04-18

Axel Madsen's THE SEWING CIRCLE purports to reveal the truth about Hollywood's lesbian social set--and if read in the same way one would read a gossip column it is an entertaining book, ripsnorting through the lives of as many stars as the author dares.

Portions of the book are clearly better researched than others, and consequently some exposes are easier to buy into others. Most of THE SEWING CIRCLE concerns the rumors that swirled around Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, and the various women who moved in their circle; in writing of this group Madsen has done his homework and the result is quite interesting. On the other hand, Madsen makes little effort to explore the lives of such figures as Agnes Moorehead--and then, completely out of the blue, attempts to posit Judy Garland as a lesbian, which is such a leap that it makes you begin to question his portraits of everyone else as well.

That aside, although Madsen's actual style is good enough, his structure is not, and THE SEWING CIRCLE jumps here, there, and everywhere in an effort to catch the reader by surprise. Still, the book is entertainingly written. Recommended for a rainy day read, but keep your grains of salt ready.

Interesting and Fascinating.......2002-03-01

I have a funny feeling that the one other review of this book is based on someone's being angry and disappointed that Mr. Madsen has "outed" some of his/her cherished movie stars. The truth is the truth and being gay doesn't make these stars any less nice, human or worthwhile. The book is well-written and interesting. What else can you ask of a book? I think it's so good I've bought several copies for friends.

The worst book ever.......2002-02-01

How the author managed to make the infinitely interesting subject matter as dry as burnt toast, is beyond me. His style is rambling, incoherent and goes off on insignificant tangents and never quite returns to the original thought. It's as if he took all of his notes, tossed them into the air, and wrote out the book from there. His editor should be tarred and feathered for having let this mess ever get into print. I LOVE books and treat them with great respect, but this is one I got so frustrated with, I flung it across the room. Often and with great force. If you have infinite patience and a lot of time to waste, by all means wade through these ramblings, as there are a few gems, but I found it hardly worth the frustration. (I read the first edition... one would hope a decent editor took this book in hand and FIXED it for the subsequent editions).
P.S. For the other reviewer who thought I hated this book because I was supposedly "angry and disappointed that Mr. Madsen has "outed" some of his/her cherished movie stars", you've gotten the very wrong end of the stick. As a lesbian, I crave books with material like this. The book is just, sadly, very, very bad.

DeMars is practical, practical, practical. She tackles the most confudling dilemmas at work and provides an ethical compass to resolve them. You can always quit,but why not resolve the dilemmas and keep your job,too? I didn't always agree with her, but DeMars got me talking to my coworkers and my boss about what was the best solution-which was exactly DeMars' purpose for writing the book in the first place, I suspect. Yes, sometimes good employees do bad things--so here's what you do when it happens.

Very practical guide to resolving ethical dilemmas at work........1998-09-21

Bettie Currie, Fawn Hall, and Rosemary Woods needed this book. So did I. Lots of us face ethical choices that keep us up at night, or cause us to wince inside. DeMars uses lots of real-life examples to help us resolve the common dilemmas we find every day at work -- dilemmas about confidentiality, loyalty, office romance, harassment, information manipulation -- it's all here.

She also coaches us about how to get the ethics discussion going -- without losing our jobs.

My favorite chapters were on lying (only very little lies told for social convention and very large lies told to save lives are OK) and "the trouble with the boss" (here's how to talk to him about his profanity, disrespect, lies, thievery, harassment, whatever). DeMars says high ethics boosts productivity and retention of customers and employees, then shows us how to have those long-overdue conversations about how we treat each other. A great book, period. I am so clear now about where I need to draw "that line" between what I will and will not do, and I am so confident about how to do it.

The problem with Tony Poderis is that he is terribly tardy in writing "It's a Great Day to Fund-Raise!" If I had read it 20 or so years ago, when he should have written it, I would have avoided some of the blunders he warns against. I wouldn't have taken nearly so long to become effective as a fund raiser. And I wouldn't have quite so many gray hairs today, each earned in the hard school of "experience." But (sigh) he wrote it only recently. Of course, there is a good reason for the interminable wait: Tony first had to rack up an incredible 20 years as director of development for The Cleveland Orchestra, where he was responsible for the largest annual institutional fund-raising campaign in Cleveland. Oh, and toss in another four or five years subsequent consulting experience, as well. I note, with some satisfaction, that the author has even more gray hairs than do I -- each one earned, no doubt, in the same "school." As evidence, I present Exhibit A: the picture on the cover (there's Tony standing before, of all things, an open bank vault!). That experience shines through in the book. His simple, pragmatic writing style patiently mentors the reader in the art of effective fund raising. The reader may be new to the field, where a book like this is invaluable and where I suspect Tony directed his focus. Or the reader may be well-experienced, where the book reaffirms lessons learned and truths well tested. Did I use the word "pragmatic"? "It doesn't take a genius to raise money," he states early on. "The process is a combination of common sense, hard work, preparation, courtesy, commitment, enthusiasm, understanding, and a belief in what you are selling." See? As expected, the book starts with goal setting and leadership (Chapter 2). But this is not an academic "text." Rather, the author reaches into his bag of experiences and pulls out the time a board trustee got up and announced, "What we need is more endowment. We ought to have a $50 million endowment campaign." Gulp. Wasn't his hair dark brown just before that? This guy has been there. Done that. That's where mentors come from. Well, actually, Tony starts even sooner than goal setting and leadership. Chapter 1 covers the Nine Basic Truths of Fund-Raising. Here's one: "You don't wait for the 'right' moment to ask; you ask now." I loved that one. How many fund raisers are captivated by the word "cultivation," so much so that they don't seem to understand that fund raising also requires "reaping," too? I often wonder how many fund raisers, were they farmers, would leave their carefully cultivated crop to wilt in the field, season after season? Tony's "Nine Truths" are as close to "theory" as he gets. After Chapter 1, he moves methodically through what it takes to succeed. Chapter 2, on goal setting and leadership, is quickly followed by an admonition to "know your organization" (Chapter 3); creation of a general development plan (Chapter 4); funding sources (Chapter 5); prospecting for donors (Chapter 6); rating and evaluating prospects (Chapter 7); annual campaigns (Chapter 8); endowment campaigns (Chapter 9); capital campaigns (Chapter 10); sponsorships and underwriting campaigns (Chapter 11); developing a campaign plan (Chapter 12); preparing for a campaign (Chapter 13); managing a campaign (Chapter 14); assessing and reviewing a campaign once it's over (Chapter 15); and developing the development team (Chapter 16). Clearly, this is a useful book that I'd wholeheartedly recommend for the fund raising professional -- new or seasoned. But it is also ideal for any other person involved with an organization's fund raising. Tony's simple, straight-forward, no-nonsense style will be welcomed by board members, volunteers, and others who will appreciate being able to get through it over a couple of evenings or a weekend.
