    Book Description

    INTRODUCTION

As it enters its fourth century, New Orleans remains proudly apart from the rest of the United States. Intoxicating and addictive, the product of a dizzying jumble of cultures, peoples and influences, it's a place where people dance at funerals and hold parties during hurricanes, where some of the world's finest musicians make ends meet busking on street corners, and fabulous Creole cuisine is dished up in hole-in-the-wall dives. There's a wistfulness, too, in the peeling, ice-cream-toned facades of the old French Quarter - site of the original settlement - in the filigree cast-iron balconies overgrown with lush ferns and fragrant jasmine, and in the cemeteries, or "Cities of the Dead", lined with crumbling above-ground tombs. Doubtless New Orleans' melancholy air - and perhaps its joie de vivre, too - is due to the city's perilous geography. Set largely below sea level, and exposed to the devastating storms that career through the Gulf of Mexico, the city could be washed or! blasted away in an instant.

Founded by the French in 1718 on the swampy flood plain of the lower Mississippi River, and today spreading back as far as the enormous Lake Pontchartrain, New Orleans is almost entirely surrounded by water, which since its earliest days has both isolated it from the interior and connected it to the outside world. By the time the Americans bought it, in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, New Orleans was a cosmopolitan city whose ethnically diverse population had mingled to create a distinctive Creole culture. In the nineteenth century its importance as a port made the city the haunt of smugglers, gamblers, prostitutes and pirates, who gave it the decadent "sin city" notoriety that it still has today. Ever since then more and more visitors, among them an inordinate number of artists, writers and sundry bohemians, have poured in to see what the fuss was about; many found themselves staying, unable to shake the place out of their system.

Given its allure New Orleans is a surprisingly small town, with its million or so residents spread across a patchwork of neighborhoods. Its compact size makes it a dream to visit; simple to get around and easy to get to know, it's one of the best places in the United States to kick back and unwind for a few days. Above all, New Orleans is less a city of major sights than of sensual pleasures. With its subtropical climate, Latin-influenced architecture and black majority population, its voodoo worshippers and its long-held carnival traditions, it is often called the northernmost Caribbean city. The pace of life is slow here, while the sybaritic vices are relished - no more so than during the many festivals, especially, of course, the world-famous carnival of Mardi Gras, when real life is put on hold as businessmen and bus-boys alike are swept along by an increasingly frenzied season of parties, street parades and masquerade balls. Whatever time of year you come, you'll slip easily into the indolent way of life, rejecting an itinerary of museum-hopping in favor of a stroll around the French Quarter, where the vibrant street life and decaying buildings provide endless feasts for the eye; a leisurely steamboat cruise on the Mississippi; or simply a long cool drink in a hidden courtyard. Perhaps the most taxing thing you'll do is head out on the slow-moving old streetcar to the residential Garden District, where dark green shrubs weighed down by fat magnolia blossoms squat in the shadow of centuries-old live oaks tangled with ragged gray streamers of Spanish moss.

Though many of the city's most lingering pleasures come after dark, when the streets fill with people eating in the hundreds of superb restaurants, drinking at its many characterful bars and enjoying a live-music scene to rival any in the world, there's a whole lot more to New Orleans - the "Big Easy", the "city that care forgot" - than its fame as a nonstop party town. Ravaged by the Civil War and since then trailing in the wake of its more dynamic Southern rivals, today New Orleans depends heavily upon the cash brought by the millions of tourists seduced by the allure of authentic jazz, fine food and free-flowing alcohol. While having enormous amounts of fun here, you're always liable to be pulled up short by the divisions between rich and poor (and, more explicitly, between white and black). Just footsteps away from the feted French Quarter and Garden District - themselves touched by decrepitude and decay - lie woefully neglected housing projects and poverty-scarred neighborhoods.

Perversely, New Orleans' second-league status, in commercial terms, has protected it from the modernization that has ripped out the old hearts of wealthier cities, and allowed it to hold on to its distinctive character. And this sense of historic continuity is not limited to architecture. From the devout celebration of Catholic saints' days and the offerings left at voodoo shrines, to the local street parades, in which umbrella-twirling dancers and blasting brass bands lead crowds of thousands through poor black neighborhoods just as they have done for several centuries, much of the city's vitality and its sheer panache comes from a heartfelt belief that what has gone before is worth keeping. The melange of cultures and races that built New Orleans still gives it its heart: not "easy", exactly, but quite unlike anywhere else in the States - or in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide book for New Orleans.......2001-10-18

If I had to bring just one guidebook on a visit to New Orleans this would be the one I would choose (out of the ones I have read).

The guidebook included several helpful maps and some nice historical/background detail.

It has a great section about visiting plantations along River Road to the west of the city. We rented a car and took a daytrip out along the River Road and found the info that was provided to be accurate and insightful.

The book's introduction to the Garden District, how to get there, what to see, etc. was excellent.

We followed several of the book's restaurant recommendations and were quite pleased - the book recommended both Mother's Cafe and The Acme Oyster House, both of which were gems.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of little surprises, very well written.......2000-08-25

The more I read this book the more I like it. There are parts of this book that stood out in my head because they practically took me back to New Orleans. I have a great deal of respect for Samantha Cook, she is a great writer!

I was very glad to see the section listing books and, in particular, movies set in or about New Orleans. Whenever I am going through New Orleans withdrawl I check this guide for movies I haven't seen.

Besides the content, which on a whole is very useful and right up there with the best guide books, I like it's small size. It is easy to carry around with you.

    5 out of 5 stars Indispensible!.......2000-04-17

This little guide is chock full of expert advice that makes your stay in this fun but grimy city much more enjoyable. Information about the one reliable cab company (and there are a lot of cab companies there), the St Charles streetcar line, and the best restaurants will keep you from looking like so many other tourists that we encountered--lost and frustrated. The writing is realistic, a little opinionated, but never snotty or incorrect. For instance, it has a small commentary on crime, but doesn't dwell on it, like other guides do. The bottom line is: use this guide and your own common sense, and you'll have a great time!

4 out of 5 stars Great pocket guide!.......2000-01-18

Contains what all (good) travel guides do -- historical background, hotels, eating, nightlife, shopping.

Pluses: good coverage of French Quarter attractions; lists plenty of moderate and inexpensive restautants and hotels; helpful tips on navigating the city; easy-to-use maps; compact format

Minuses: index is not comprehensive (if you're looking for a particular restauant, hotel, or attraction, you have to browse the appropriate section); lodging and restaurant guides are selective, not comprehensive (doesn't mention Antoine's!)

Other: focuses heavily on the French Quarter, but also contains information for the rest of the city and surrounding area; contains information for gay travelers (clubs, gay-friendly hotels, etc.)

We (physically) looked at a variety of guides, and this is the one we chose. If it doesn't live up to expectations, expect a follow-up review after our vacation!

        Book Description

Branding reached its zenith in the dot-com era, when as much as 90 percent of the venture capital raised by start-ups was budgeted simply to establish corporate identity and earn a spot in the public's awareness. Since then, however, it has become increasingly clear that companies were approaching things backwards. And so the time has come to adopt a new set of objectives to move Beyond the Brand. In this book, learn what some of the most forward-thinking companies today do to develop aggressive, innovative growth.

Marketing expert John Winsor makes a powerful case that consumers have developed a ""brand immune system"" that only magnifies the problems involved with branding today. Instead of focusing on branding efforts, he explains, companies must learn to use ""bottom-up"" tools to co-create new products and marketing strategies with their customers. It's about getting out in the streets and spending time with right customers in their worlds, creating essential foundations for breakthrough innovation.

While many recent titles such as The Tipping Point, Crossing the Chasm, and The Idea Virus, have highlighted the importance of certain customers in the marketplace, Beyond the Brand takes readers one step further, providing case studies, as well as practical step-by-step methods to engage these key voices in a dialogue that can fuel real product and marketing innovation.

        Readers will learn:

        * The Eight Steps to develop a bottom-up strategy.

        * How to identify and find new ways to listen to the key voices in the marketplace.

        * How to hone intuition and find inspiration to drive innovation.

        * How to find the company's center of gravity.

The tools John Winsor outlines in Beyond the Brand are the very ones his company, Radar Communications, uses to help some of the most forward thinking companies to develop more aggressively innovative growth.

5 out of 5 stars A new methodology for research marketing.......2006-05-10

Everyone knows that word of mouth is the most persuasive selling asset a product can have. But how many marketers are aware of how word of mouth is generated and sustained? What makes it effective and how can you find out what will work for your product?

Windsor details a research methodology, "anthro-journalism" designed to elicit stories from customers about where they find value in your products. Such research can be used to fuel innovation as well as sales. What is important here is to find common ground with your customers on their own turf. The value of this approach is that often, your customers are more savvy about your products than your marketing staff. Capturing that value from customers, however, is not as easy as sending out a survey.

Storytelling is a powerful and evocative tool for marketers. But like journalists, if marketers want to get the best stories, they'll need to go to the customer. Even a focus group is too artificial an environment and too removed from the lived reality in which your customers use your products. You need to know, not just how your customers behave, but to understand why they behave as they do. To this end, you'll need to get as close to the context in which they use your products as possible.

Beyond the Brand is a fascinating read, with an equally fascinating methodology.

        5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2005-05-31

Most marketing books discuss how marketers should relate to their customers. Some use a formal, objective approach to penetrate the wall that separates the service or product provider from the consumer. This book promotes a very different, softer "anthro-journalistic" tactic: learning consumers' desires by hearing their stories and reflecting those wishes in the product's design. This leads to giving the product its own stories to "tell" potential customers, in a mutual social network based on shared meaning. The idea borrows the power of the oral tradition from anthropology and applies it to word-of-mouth product promotion. Author John Winsor stresses listening and storytelling as ways for trained marketers to understand customers and sell to them. Although his treatise dips occasionally into slightly airy New Age sensibilities, Winsor's information on the flaws of focus groups and the importance of heartfelt, meaningful customer feedback tells a story of its own. Of course, applying a cultural anthropologist's perspective to marketing will work better for some businesses than others. We think this book will intrigue and possibly challenge marketers who want to break out of branding buzz and explore new ideas.

5 out of 5 stars A 'Must Read' for Brand Marketers.......2005-02-24

As a brand management and marketing consultant, I try to read as many of the newly published marketing books as possible. Most of them rehash old material, are not very useful and are quite uninspiring. Not so with John Winsor's "Beyond the Brand." It is well written and easy to read with many useful examples and case studies. But, more importantly, it focuses on what really matters in developing compelling brands -- authenticity, customer intimacy, standing for something, listening, crafting your story, using your intuition, etc. And his "Bottom Up" strategy model uniquely organizes these concepts in a simple to understand fashion. It is clear that John Winsor knows of what he writes. If you want to gain a fresh perspective on brand building, buy John's book. I highly recommend it.

        5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2004-10-19

Smart and accessible, Beyond the Brand is the definitive text on reaching consumers in today's hyper-competitive and brand-inundated marketplace. Marketing guru and founder of Radar Communications, John Winsor guides the reader through an evolutionary field trip from a time when brands acted as cultural creators (the Volkswagon Beetle) through a time when they attempted to align with cultural epicenters in effort to be seen as credible and authentic. He emphasizes the need in today's world for companies to really listen to consumers - engaging in a journey of learning, rather than a mission to find "right" answers.

Using anecdotes about some of the best consumer brands out there, like Nike, Oakley and Burton Snowboards, Winsor proclaims that the only way to stand out in today's marketplace is for a company to find inspiration and hone its intuition, by finding key voices and truly listening to those voices tell their stories. If I had to choose one book to help me connect with customers, this would be it. Beyond the Brand will become one of those rare, classic points of reference.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book!.......2004-10-08

Some of the ideas in this book are not new, but they are still largely unpracticed. This book is a must-read, and , more importantly a "must-do" if you take your job as a marketer seriously. The concept of "listening" to your customer is taken to a higher level through the concept of finding "key voices". This isn't easy, but is worthwhile- critical even. Read this book; your company and career will both benefit.

This book was very informative as well as beautiful. I just loved to glossy pages..but that isn't the point..hehe..well, The reason why I gave this book 4 stars is because it lacked as much health-troubleshooting pages as I would have liked, but otherwise, I liked the story in the beginning, the explanation to racing, I absolutely like how it didn't side with anti-racing activists..that gets on my nerves....and pictures of many products you might need on the way.

                Book Description

In Taunton's Lawn Guide, well-known expert John Fech emphasizes a commonsense approach to lawn care that takes into account the household's budget, lifestyle, and time constraints. He offers a wealth of practical instructions on everything from installation and routine maintenance to improving a problem lawn. Topics include whether to start from seed or sod; how, why, and when to aerate, remove thatch, fertilize, mow, and water; pests, disease, and why organic is not always better; the lawn's design role; and how grass coexists with flowers, shrubs, and trees. Because soil types, grass selections, and seasonal lawn care chores vary from one part of the country to another, the book also includes a detailed regional guide. Filled with step-by-step instructions, easy-to-read charts, and over 125 photographs, this is the complete guide to maintaining a lush lawn.

                  Book Description

The publication of volume 4 completes the Hebrew part of the lexicon. The object of this volume is in accordance with the three previously published volumes and also with the earlier editions of the work on the Hebrew vocabulary of the Old Testament. The vocabulary is recorded as closely as possible to the meaning and its various nuances. The main emphasis lies in the parts of speech (verbs, substantive prepositions and numerals) as well as on first names, place names and regional names. The old translations, such as the Septuagint, the Vulgate, the Targums and the Syriac version are considered as well as the Hebrew-related Semitic languages.

Yuk. So full of himself and his "goodness" that I couldn't even finish it. Don't waste your time.

A must read for any parent thinking that old fashion ideas have fell out of favor. Charlton Heston confirms that old fashioned beliefs are well worth passing on to the next generation. Well written and nice photos.

You don't need to be a grandparent to appreciate the love and thought that Mr. Heston put into writing this book for his grandson. His words of wisdom, his life lessons and his family values are valuable and extremely well-written. His grandson, Jack, is one lucky little boy to have such a wonderful and caring grandfather.

                                Book Description

In the crucible of intellectual change that took place in the seventeenth century, the role of Samuel Hartlib was of immense significance. Hartlib (originally from Elbing) settled in England permanently from the late 1620s until his death in 1662. His aspirations formed a distinctive and influential strand in English intellectual life during those revolutionary decades. This volume reflects the variety of the theoretical and practical interests of Hartlib's circle and presents them in their continental context.
