If getting and spending define our lives, then Juliet Schor now has us covered. Six years ago, her book The Overworked American scrutinized the getting part. It focused public attention on the disappearance of leisure and the harmful effects thereof on families and society. It sparked a debate over whether Americans really work as much as we proudly claim. (If so, how to explain the audience for Monday Night Football?) Nevertheless, Schor can take credit for helping push Congress into passing the Family Leave Act in 1993.
Now she is back with a critique of our spending. Schor notes that, despite rising wealth and incomes, Americans do not feel any better off. In fact, we tell pollsters we do not have enough money to buy everything we need. And we are almost as likely to say so if we make $85,000 a year as we are if we make $35,000. Schor believes that "keeping up with the Joneses" is no longer enough for today's media-savvy office workers. We set our sights on the lifestyles of those higher up the organizational chart. We seek to emulate characters on TV. For teenagers, "enough" is the idle splendor that hardly exists outside of what MTV un-ironically calls The Real World. Schor offers an original and provocative analysis of why many Americans feel driven and unhappy despite our success. As an alternative, she profiles several "downshifters" who've taken up voluntary simplicity in search of a more satisfying way of life. No policy solutions suggest themselves this time, only a change of heart. --Barry Mitzman
Book Description
The Overspent American explores why so many of us feel materially dissatisfied, why we work staggeringly long hours and yet walk around with ever-present mental "wish lists" of things to buy or get, and why Americans save less than virtually anyone in the world. Unlike many experts, Harvard economist Juliet B. Schor does not blame consumers' lack of self-discipline. Nor does she blame advertisers. Instead she analyzes the crisis of the American consumer in a culture where spending has become the ultimate social art.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent analysis of contemporary American.......2007-08-16
The title says it all, doesn't it. We want, want, want, and spend, spend, spend. When I worked in corrections, I often said to the inmates (who lusted after fancy cars, expensive sneakers, and gold jewelry): "We want things we don't need and can't afford, and it gets us into big trouble." This book explains why we are captivated by the spirit of more is more is more.
Interesting book, with a few flaws........2007-05-15
This is a very well researched book and has many interesting ideas on how to spend less and worry less about things we don't really "need" but really "want." My only concerns were in the section about "downshifters" - people who work less and make less, but are happier. The book notes that most people who "downshift" were only making $30,000 a year or so to start with - not a lot of room to maneuver downward. I was interested more in those who made much more but kept spending more, which she also alludes to. Still, a very interesting book, with some intriguing ideas about how to control expenditures.
Good book . . . but it left me hungry.......2006-12-17
I thought this was a very good book, but I guess I was expecting more from the author. Having just read Fast Food Nation and then getting this book right after, the layout and format was similar but what Eric Schlosser did, fell very short in Juliet B. Schor's book.
I wanted so much more but as each chapter came to an end, I felt very let down. I wanted to point my finger at the big corporations and say "see what you did" but I found myself finding fault more with the author than the corporations. I really wanted to read a well researched book on this topic so now I find myself reading the books she cited.
They were a few good parts of the book where the author made reference to the sitcom Friends and how we as americans making $40,000 to $ 60,000 a year are trying to keep up with the Jonese making 1 million per episode. Also that the Jonese are no longer our next door neighbors but with the expanse of the internet and TV our Jones are actors, singers and record producers. I found this to be so true and wanted more, but time and time again her argument ended right there.
It was here that the author's solution would then be picked up, and what is her solution you may ask? (scratching your head) communal living. I found this advantageous because I acutally expected the author to skirt the issue. Juliet B. Schor's example, why have every house buy a lawn mower when one house can and the neighborhood could share it. I found so many arguments to refute this (I live in New York, was one) that I felt the book did not give the topic the right amount of justice. So I'm still searching . . .
The Overspent American: Why We Want What We Don't Need.......2006-11-15
Outstanding, the book is very well written and documented. Juliet B. Schor gives very cogent anecdotes in the book concerning consumerism. As a matter of fact, being in the process of "upgrading" the appliances in the house for no apparent reason, the book totally redirected my excesses.
A must read for every hedonist, capitalistic American.
Explores the psychology of spending.......2006-07-03
To change behavior, it helps to understand behavior. This book does a great job exploring the psychology behind why people spend so much money.
Some of the topics it covers include
-the strange need to keep up with "the Joneses"
-how some material goods force you to spend more to maintain and upkeep them (i.e., auto, large house)
-how kids are influenced by peers and advertisements at an early age and subsequently pressure parents to buy stuff
-how certain professions lead you to spend more on clothes and cars in order to succeed in that profession
-the correlation between increased television watching and increased spending
-the willingness of people to spend significantly more for certain brand name items (purses, lipsticks, shoes) that provide no more quality than generic items
The book also gives solid advice about how to break the overspending habit and provides interesting examples of people who have "downshifted" their lives.
Once you understand the etiologies of your thoughts and desires, you are better able to control and redirect them. For anyone who wants to decrease or have more control over their spending behavior, this is a great book for them. Even if you consider yourself frugal already, this is still a very interesting book.
It is very concise at 170 pages (the rest is references) so it doesn't get boring or repetitive. I think it is more effective than the similar book Affluenza.

The nicest book on Labradors.......2002-12-08
I don't have a Labrador, but my friend borrowed it since she was going to buy a Labrador puppy and she found it helpful. And it's nice to look at, easy to transport, interesting, and the pics are nice.
A wonderful book!.......2000-06-25
All about your Labrador Retriever is a wonderful book. It is 32 pages but full of very helpful information! The price is very low for such a great book. I encourage any one who has a lab or is planning on getting one to get this amazing book. Hobbies to Careers.......2000-12-13
Excellent advice on how to pursue careers in the arts and crafts fields and professions. It is practical and fun to read especially since so many opportunities in these fields are discussed. The histories of these fields are very good as are the processes involved. It makes one want to pursue one's interest in arts and crafts!
Valuable compendium for those considering a career in crafts.......1999-06-01
This book is a valuable guide for students considering a career in the arts. Each career path includes a brief history, a description of the actual processes involved in the work and discusses training options and job potentials. A particular strength of the book lies in including some of the more unusual crafts like book binding, stained glass design and weaving.
This Book Offers an Exceptional Measure of Information.......1999-02-23
Do you sometimes think to yourself when you're doing a project, "I wouldn't mind doing this for a career." Then the one question you must definitely ask yourself is, "What procedures must I take in order to develop a career out of my talent?" This book can get you started in the right direction.
Opportunities in Arts and Crafts Careers offers you a clear understanding about the various careers available, the skills needed, and how to get started. I wanted to read this book to find out if it would help out fellow woodworkers who would like to pursue a career with their skills, and if it had information for them to get started in one. I've found that not only does it provide information for these two avenues, but also an understanding of the history of the craft.
I extremely recommend this book for those who would like to seek a career in the arts and crafts. Elizabeth B. Gardner has performed an exceptional measure of research, in order to write this book with the facts provided in it.
This book is very engaging & accessible..with great strength.......1999-01-04
I applaud Elizabeth Gardner for authoring Opportunities in Arts and Crafts Careers. This book is a very engaging and accessible reference to a multitude of careers that are too often overlooked by students, their teachers, parents, and counselors. The book covers a broad scope of career opportunities including fine art, applied art or design, and craft. The result is a career reference book with great collective strength.

Less than inspiring.......2000-05-05
Sorry but I'm with the other reviewer - Lillian Too's books seem to rehash the same stuff over and over again. Also I find her very confusing. I'm fascinated by feng shui but think there are much better books out there to be honest.
ALL THE BOOKS ARE SIMILAR !.......2000-04-12
I notice that the books written by Lilian Too are almost similar and I agreed a reader from the U.S. that Lilian Too's Feng Shui books are aims for commercial and money making, and not really helping people to overcome difficult and problems by using Feng Shui.
Acknowledging ones career.......2000-02-26
It is beyond examination that Lillian's exemplifies the ideas of feng shui, and brings it about in a really easy and comprehensible manner. It takes feng shui to a new level, adapting the essential elements of theory and incorporates it towards different aspects of one's life.
It embelishes the essence in understanding focal and directing ones energy towards ones center. It is through a center that we as individuals live and affect one another. This book provides a prime example in understanding and able to focus our energy in a series of manner to enhance our productivity and life.
I bought this book 6 months ago ..........1999-01-23
... and after energizing the corners and tapping the directions according to Lillian Too's advice,I have just been promoted. I have been so inspired by her fantasitic career achievements - here in Malaysia she is a great role model... I recommend this and all her other books very highly but this is the best book !

Book Description
Oscar-winner Michael Caine is a true international movie star. This photographic celebration of his work documents the performances—good and bad—that made his name and helped define an era. Find out the story behind each of the more than 80 films he made, and the reactions, influences, and in some cases the backlash to his performances. Every one is included, from the early successes—Zulu, The Italian Job, Alfie, and Get Carter—to his mature roles in Hannah and Her Sisters, The Cider House Rules, and The Quiet American. Quotes from the man himself, and from those who worked with him, as well as never-before-seen interviews, provide further fascinating insights.
Book Description
When Christine Kehl OHagans great-grandmother left Ireland in 1865, she never suspected that along with her trunk and rosary beads, she was bringing Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy to New York. In a radiant memoir that spans five generationschronicling how the disease affected OHagans uncles, brother, and ultimately her own sonOHagan offers a moving testimonial to the power of the human spirit, a story of a family who had love, courage, and heartbreak in equal measures, and how they learned to survive.
Customer Reviews:
Amazingly well written book--absolutely a necessary read for anyone living with special needs children.......2006-05-03
What an amazingly well written book! I have never read a more true account of what it means to be the parent of a child with special needs. The Kehl family has been marked for generations by muscular dystrophy. Anyone who wants to understand how it really feels to deal with such a legacy should read this. The power of denial was so powerfully shown by how long the author was able to keep up the idea that her son was "just having trouble with the bus stairs", and when she finally did get a diagnosis, I found it the most amazing analogy to say that being able to handle a child with special needs is like deciding you are going camping, knowing nothing about it and having none of the equipment, and then finding your closet is filled with a tent, campfire dishes, flashlights, etc---you already have what you need to handle it, and you never knew. The effects of a child's sickness on a strong marriage are also so truthfully shown here---how you can blame and yell and say horrible things and still love each other and the child so much. It is hard to believe this author has not written many best selling books already, as this book is just astonishing. It came to me at a time when I really needed it, when I am dealing with the possibility of a serious diagnosis for my child, and I am so thankful it did.
Close Knit Ties.......2005-06-17
Christine Kehl O'Hagan, born in Queens in 1950 carried a tragic secret. Duchenne's Muscular Dystophy (DMD), which is an X-linked trait runs rampant throughout her family. DMD claimed several male relatives throughout the generations in her family. Females are born carriers of this tragic condition and every male born in a family where this trait is present is at risk for developing it at some point in life.
As much as I enjoyed this book, there were two things that irked me: the constant references to sneakers and being Irish. Even the tablecloth was made of Irish lace! The O'Hagans' beagle was named Finney! Sharing the traditions of Irish heritage was all well and good, but the constant references to being Irish did seem a bit excessive at points. As for the sneakers, the symbol of mobility and childhood play and sports, the message could not have been made more plain.
Christine's younger brother Richie Jr., born in 1957 showed signs of MDM early. Poor coordination and balance and difficulty managing stairs were the tip-offs to his having MDM. By 1966 Richie was no longer able to walk and remained confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of his life. He died in July of 1979 at the age of 22.
Some very touching anecdotes are shared; in 1961, Christine, then 11 would take her 4-year-old brother to the neighborhood church and pray for him. That was really heartwarming. I also liked it when the neighborhood boys took Richie under their wing and would hang off the back of his wheelchair, including him in their games. I loved it when Richie would sing the Beatles' songs from 1967's "Sgt. Pepper" in 1967-68. The Kehl children's Aunt Nelly's bizarrely quaint expressions involving hygiene and bathroom usage are sure to bring a smile; the unfamiliar term "kitty murphies" was made quite clear in the context and feline reference.
Christine and younger sister Pam (born 1953) both had sons with DMD. Christine's younger son, Jamie was diagnosed at age 7 on October 16, 1980. He was tested in the hospital for DMD in December of 1980. Her older son, born in August of 1971 did not inherit the condition. Sadly, Jamie died on May 20, 1998 at the age of 24, one year after his maternal grandmother died.
Pam's two sons, born in 1976 and 1977 also had DMD which ultimately confined them to wheelchairs as well. I especially liked the descriptions of Queens in the 1950s and 1960s and the parts about family interaction and the way Jamie's brother went to bat for him and that they owned a beagle, although I disagree with the author's finding that the hound was homely. Beagles are beautiful little hounds. Luckily, during the roughest points and bleakest moments the family stayed together. Christine's friends, Ruth and Tony sounded like genuine angels.
The book ends on an upbeat note with the 1999 birth of Christine's granddaughter, Alanna Nicole.
The Book of Kehls.......2005-02-18
A book you can't put down - that's the way I would describe Mrs. O'Hagan's The Book of Kehls. You get the feeling that you grew up with her in the way she draws the reader into the most intimate part of her life in dealing with her parents, her siblings and her disabled son, Jamie. This book is about an Irish family and how they deal with a disease that affected everyone in their family. It is about a mother who is above all human, unashamedly sharing her emotions that run the gamut from being frustrated to being hilarious. Above all, this book shows Mrs. O'Hagan's strength and unending love in letting her son know that it is okay to stop fighting and to find peace. A must read.
A Work of the heart...........2005-01-28
This book is not your ordinary story, it is the blood, sweat and tears of a brave family suffering from generation to generation with Muscular Dystrophy. Christine O'Hagan should be proud of how elloquently she is able to share her losses from her brother Richie to the ultimate loss of her own precious son Jamie.
She shares so much in this book, you can't help but wonder how she was able to sit all those long hours and re-live so much sorrow. But don't be fooled. Christine knows just how to tell her story with her very fine sense of humor which has always been
her strong tool through her struggles.A book to read not only for the journey of her life, but also for what it gives the reader.... The true meaning of what live is about. God Bless you Chrissie.
Honestly and bravely written!!!!.......2005-01-05
The Book Of Kehls is a memoir that is honestly and bravely written. The author probes her deepest feelings about coming from a family smitten with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and shares her candid insights with depth as well as with humor.
The book also provides education about the disease to those that are unfamiliar with the ravaging toll it takes on its victims and their families. It helps the reader to understand the horror that living with this disease can bring, and provides insight into how families cope both effectively and ineffectively with chronic illness.
Ms. O'Hagan also gives us a glimpse of the past as she shares her childhood growing up in the 50's and 60's and in many instances with great nostalgia. This was quite enjoyable to read.
The layout of the book is very well created and the themes excellently threaded throughout. The beginning is extremely powerful as is the ending, leaving the reader to ponder life, its personal meaning and the necessity of gratitude for what many of us take for granted.
For me, the book was a quick read because it was so interesting that I couldn't stop......The cover was a beautiful, the title wonderful and the picture of the children so poignantly presented. I highly recommend The Book of Kehls for its message of love and spirit.
Book Description
Walter Kennedy is a young insurance company manager who is forced to run a gauntlet of management woes, from staff issues to budget problems. Morale is bad and most of his employees are unproductive. At times, he is ready to give it all up and return to the small business he left behind in his hometown. He seems unable to find the secret to making his office successful until he meets Joshua O'Hare, an unassuming tire dealer who has an uncanny ability to understand Walter's problems and point him in the right direction. In this book you will learn what great managers already know about running a business. It is a good read, an easy read, and a compelling story that will appeal to managers and employees at all levels.

we LEAD Book review by the Editor of [...].......2007-01-24
Wayne Kehl has an interesting way to teach leadership. He does it through excellent story telling! Always Remember: If it Ain't Fun, It Ain't Worth Doing!, is a fictional story of a young man and his journey to discover effective management principles. The main character is Walter Kennedy, who starts out his career logging after high school, but eventually joins his father's small insurance agency. When Walter's father retires, they sell out to a large international insurance firm looking for acquisitions and young talent. Walter joins the Shelton Saunderson agency and quickly becomes immersed in a dysfunctional and autocratic organization. Walter faces problems and pressures that overwhelm him and he quickly realizes he is "over his head" and needs help.
Always Remember: If it Ain't Fun, It Ain't Worth Doing! is the story of Walter's growth and maturity as a manager and leader. Along the way are colorful characters he learns from and a special mentor named Joshua O'Hare. In a nine month period, a transformation takes place at Shelton Saunderson that begins with an unhappy and uncommunicative workforce. In time and with the right efforts a gradual improvement takes place in the workplace environment. The story also has an unexpected ending that is sure to grab your attention and teach you that when one door closes in life, another one opens.
This book was written by Kehl as "a distillation of experiences and lessons from my own life." Within it are some constant themes. First, it takes passion and energy to be successful in any area of life including the business world. These are people who wake up everyday and do things well because they love what they are doing. Secondly, to be successful requires a leader to engage workers who are alienated and disengaged. How can one tap into the latent talents of the workforce? If people are not enjoying their jobs and the environment they work in, they will never attain their goals and the work they do won't be worth it. Always Remember: If it Ain't Fun, It Ain't Worth Doing! is a well written book and will be especially appreciated by those who enjoy learning and pondering the contents of interesting fiction. Reading this book is both fun and educational. You have probably heard of reality television, this book is reality management.
WOW!!!!.......2006-08-04
When I first picked up this book, I thought it would be another one of these books managers tell us to read from a corporate level. We skim the pages, pretend we care and move on with our lives.
But I was knocked off my chair when I got into this one. It starts with a compelling story of a young man trying to make it, then it morphs into a clearcut story of managerial excellence. As a manager myself, I feel like a new person at work. I've learned all kinds of things about myself and the hardworking people in my office. This book will change everyone that reads it. Kudos to Mr. Kehl for being the first one to write a book that applies to normal people. Thanks!
Great Book!!!.......2006-08-04
This book has a refreshing mentor-apprentice theme. There's no behaviour dictation, but rather a story of a successful business manager in way over his head that is lead down an enlightening path by a humble, unlikely source. It contains tremendous character development for the first few chapters, forming a very solid profile of the protagonist.
In addition, "If It Fun, It Ain't Worth Doing!" contains absolute brilliance from the standpoint of a manager running a business and the people challenges that come with every day life. It applies to everyone that has a job. Employees will gain a new empathy for their leaders and leaders a better understanding of their employees. Successful managers and employees everywhere will read it and think, "I can't believe I've never thought of that before!" It's quite inspiring, and has a timeless quality. I look forward to the next one!
Book Description
This book is an essay on the feminine, composed almost entirely of paintings and photographs of women. On the juxtaposition, film director Sergei Eisenstein notes "By the comination of two 'depictables' is achieved the representation of something that is graphically undepictable." This is the intention of The Feminine. Looking at it, one enters a special world, a world in which meaning is revealed by the interplay of images, a world in which the arrangement of the images is as important as the images themselves. The women represented range from young to old, and art works date from the 13th century to the modern era. Among the artists included are photographers Jacques Henri Lartigue, Man Ray, and Clementina Hawarden; painters include Gustav Klimt, Joaquin Sorolla and Sandro Botticelli. A few pages of quotes have been included by the author to illuminate his work with words, where words are appropriate. Authors include Anais Nin, Colette, Laurie Anderson and Emily Dickinson.
