Only the Information We Backpackers Want and Not Pages of Stuff We Don't!.......2006-01-09
The BUG guides are simple to read, a lot thinner, less bulky and heavy than their competitors who keep adding fine dining, five star hotels and other stuff we backpackers never use (which makes a lot of difference when you have to lug the thing around an entire continent, or even in this case just New Zealand) and much better value. They give a description and rating on each hostel (they claim they do not accept free nights or money but who knows), as well as maps of hostel locations and travel company information.
You obviously won't agree with all their reviews of the accommodation but that's the backpacking scene. You can have a terrible experience at somewhere where someone else had one of the best stays of their life. Don't rely on this guide alone, ask other backpackers who have been to the destinations you are going where they stayed and what it was like. The more opinions you get the more likely you are to get a clearer picture.
Definitely get this over Lonely Planet and Let's Go, at least until they clean up their acts.

Product Description
"It was a hard life in the wilderness, and rather than cry, you laughed your head off. When you were freezing in winter, you sat around the Big Fires and chewed the fat and what didn't happen you made up until, in the wilderness dark, there was a tall wind walking, and a hurricane dream ripping through man, beast, earth, and forest, blowing like a bellows, fanning man to the derring-do, to dig, and hoe and plant. . . ."
So begins this fresh and vigorous telling of the story of Davy Crockett -- the man who marched up the Wilderness Road straight to the Congress of the United States, and later stood defiant to the last hour at the fall of the Alamo.
He was as fun-loving and restless as he was courageous and honest. His integrity and deep love of country and of the people have made him a folk-symbol of the early American spirit that stood as firm against the tide of corrupt politics as it did against the hardships of Nature.
Aldren Watson's illustrations show his keen understanding of the spirit and the humor of the man and the fabulous times in which he lived.

Money can't make you happy, but it can make you miserable, explains money maven Jean Chatzky in You Don't Have to Be Rich: Comfort, Happiness, and Financial Security on Your Own Terms. Her premise is provocative: the financial habits of people who believe that money equals happiness will stand in the way of achieving that happiness. Chatzey, a financial editor for the Today show and a columnist for Money magazine, leverages money smart habits of mind from her research with 1,500 Americans and their wallets.
She begins with short and savvy history of how Americans turned from market observers to "in the game all the time participants." Then, she focuses on how to use market down turns as an opportunity "to take back our money by living within our means." Chatzky's down to earth advice is practical and confronts the reader head-on with a non-nonsense approach: "five steps to wanting less," "Feng Shui finance to simplify," "advice for the organizationally dyslexic," "non-gaseous goal setting," or "how to stop digging a financial hole and spotting unconscious spending."
Chatzky illustrates with clear examples and includes survey questions so readers can assess their own money matters. Although some of the advice will sound familiar, (pay your bills when they come in), this is a priceless blueprint for balancing your checkbook along with your outlook. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
One of America's most popular personal finance experts reveals how you can become happier at any income level through better money management
Millions of Americans have turned to Jean Chatzky for financial advice, thanks to her weekly appearances on NBC's Today and her column in Money magazine. Now, in You Don't Have to Be Rich, she analyzes the results of a unique survey in which she questioned 1,500 Americans about their financial attitudes and behaviors. She looks at how much money people actually do need to guarantee a happy, comfortable life. And gets down to the nitty-gritty, isolating behaviors that-if adopted-can significantly improve a life.
The results of this proprietary survey-conducted with the help of the Roper Center-are remarkable. Chatzky found that while a certain amount of money buys comfort, money can't make you happy-at least not in the way most people believe it can. But it can make you miserable, if you're managing it wrong. That's why it's time to make a change.
In her frank, engaging style, Chatzky explains how to "own your money" to create a happy and comfortable life. She outlines the financial habits of happy people and shows how anyone can be a part of this group, no matter what they earn. Filled with fresh insights and real life examples, You Don't Have to Be Rich reaffirms that finances don't have to be a source of stress and that living within your means can be extremely rewarding.

A solid read.......2007-07-11
I stumbled on to this book at my local bookstore marked down from $24.00 to $6.00. After reading it I'm surprised to say I'd be willing to pay the initial amount! The author explains financial stability (I prefer the term "stability" instead of "security"; wealthy people are secure, the less wealthy have to strive for stability) in a very lucid and rational tone. Straightforward with obvious sound advice it provided tibits of information to help each individual to define financial comfort and stability on their own terms. Thanks, Ms. Chatzky, for allowing me to not be as insecure anymore about my financial situation and about money in general!
a look at motivation over money.......2006-10-09
The thing that sets this book apart from the average personal finance book is the fact that Chatzky really challenges you to look at WHY you care about money so much. We are becoming an increasingly materialistic society and the growing trend is to fill every void with money. Meanwhile, I think the general population is more unhappy, definitely less healthy, and losing connection with what many people describe as the "important things in life" (relationships, family, health, community) than they were 20, 30 or 40 years ago. So while the practical advice may be simple, the focus really is not a "how to" but rather a look at why and for what reasons. Many personal finance books seem to intensify ones need and desire for money by suggesting ways to "make more faster" or to "be one up on the rest of the world"; this one seems to take a step back and connects with the real reason that many people become engrossed in personal finance books: their quest for happiness. If you are well organized financially and have a good strategy in place but still don't feel comfortable financially, my recommendation would be to read this book for the "big picture" in conjuction with another (less simplistic) finance book for the details. This book really challenges you to take things in perspective. You may even finish this book and decide that it's not your investment strategy but your life strategy that needs to be reworked.
Grreat Book, It Will Help You Get Organized.......2005-03-16
I saw Jean Chatsky on TV. Her approach to financial security was refreshing. Instead of "waiting" until you become a millionaire in order to solve all of your financial concerns, she rather teaches us that you don't have to be rich. Instead of trying to stare at the big picture, realize that the big picture is nothing more than a lot of little pictures. When you get the little pictures in order, the big picture changes. For example by observing for two weeks, where your cash in pocket goes, you can find ways to reduce annual expenses by even several thousand dollars per year. Figuring that amount of money, invested over ten years, you come up with a substantial amount of money.
By sitting down and figuring out a budget, or allotment of monies, you can help rid yourself of the irrational spending. Start to figure out what makes you incessantly spend, spend, spend. Counting your money can be fun. Instead of enjoying your new toy for only a day or two after you buy it, then on to the next buy, you rather find joy in the ongoing financial strategy that you employ.
By setting new goals and dreams, you focus your income on value pursuits, rather than buying a whole lot of junk.
This book is chock full of great advice. I'm going to work hard at the suggestions. Enjoy the freedom of knowing that your financial well being is in order.
Hey if your books all balance, even though you are not a millionaire, you can begin to enjoy life. Instead of that aching feeling in the background telling you that something is wrong. Your new value dream that replaces your nonsense spending will fulfill your need to buy.
This book will take you step by step as to how to "clean out the garage" of your personal finances. Highly recommended, and personally I think Jean Chatsky is hot, hot, hot.
Very basic, but something for even the financially clever.......2005-02-02
Ms. Chatzky has done a lot of research, not only on the financial habits of Americans, but on what truly makes us happy, consulting with many leading happiness experts. No surprise -- beyond a certain income level that provides the basics, money doesn't really make us happy. In fact, stress over money -- even if we have more than enough -- can make us miserable.
She encourages us to take control of our money, which will help us take control of our lives. Many of her suggestions are simple, but practical: organize your papers, pay your bills when they come in, don't buy things you don't need, track your spending... But she frames them all in the discussion of finding happiness in your life, melding the practical with the philosophical.
It's true; this book will be more useful to people whose finances are way out of control. But I still learned a couple of things: some guidelines for portfolio composition, that I could probably track my spending more closely, and that I should do some estate planning.
If you're not sure you need this book, live one of Ms. Chatzky's mottoes and don't buy it: check it out of the library instead!
Great! A quick, useful lesson in focusing your finances!.......2004-10-07
Two thumbs up!!
Our entire family have been fans of Jean Chatzky's NBC Today appearances for several years. Her clear, plain-spoken approach to understanding and tackling financial challenges is once again on display with this latest book - which offers straightforward, practical advice on identifying and fixing the common problems that nearly all of us seem to share.
Check out the website at www.payitdown.com. i use it as a good morning reminder that a simple, small and consistent effort can have a great big payoff!
Product Description
From Publishers Weekly
Chatzky, a Today show contributor and columnist for Money, Time and USA Weekend, acknowledges that the combined impact of the declining stock market, war and continuing unemployment have led people to worry about money more than in the recent past. However, Chatzky says, they don't know what to do with their concerns. The solution: "It's time to take back our lives. And in order to do that we need to take back our money.... We need to regain our financial power if we feel we've ceded it. Or to grab hold of that power, even if we've never paid much attention before." To find out what steps people should take, Chatzky and the Roper Center surveyed 1,505 people about the impact of money on their happiness, and how prepared they feel with their financial plans for the future. Chatzky uses the survey responses as chapter openers and then goes on to offer anecdotes and advice. She discusses finding the right job, saving, setting realistic goals, planning for emergencies and more. Chatzky's style is friendly and her counsel sound, though less extensive than some readers may need. Those struggling with basic money woes, like debt or trying to put away savings for their children's college education, will find this book helpful, but people wanting more in-depth or sophisticated information would do better with other investment guides.

Book Description
This book is the first of an intended two-volume work about British terriers. Behind every book written there is an intended audience. Authors of dog books often state they are writing for either the seasoned professional or the novice. These are all commendable objectives, but the motivation for this particular approach was to serve up an informal history for terrier owners and fanciers; while, hopefully, interesting the seasoned professional.

A 302-page "terrier social history".......2003-10-19
The first of a planned two-volume work by Bryan Cummins about the Terrier dogs associated with the British Isles, Terriers Of Scotland & Ireland: Their History And Development. This is a comprehensive, 302-page "terrier social history" that focuses upon the origins of this specialized canine breed and its qualities for both practical work and as loving household companions. Each individual chapter informatively looks at a different terrier breed, evaluating its unique evolution and traits. Black-and-white photographs magnificently illustrate this fascinating and enjoyable reference which is an informed, informative, and very highly recommended for terrier enthusiasts, breeders, and owners.

I'm a gardener in California, and was looking for something to help me select worthwile gardens to visit while touring Texas on vacation. This book fills the bill admirably.
A Tour of Texas Beauty.......2005-08-20
Nothing is more invigorating and tranquil than a walk in a lovingly tended garden, and this wonderful book guides the lucky reader to the best such spots in Texas. Touring Texas Gardens catalogues the most seductive gardens over the sprawling state, complete with descriptions of their territory, lists of their flora and fauna, contact information, and driving instructions.
Jessie Gunn Stephens, a well-known Texas naturalist and columnist who specializes in gardening, has created a carefully and exhaustively researched book that makes a wise and friendly companion for trips to these special places.
I especially appreciate the book's "bird alerts," which remind readers which avian friends they will meet in these gardens and when each species is likely be there.
This book is a rare treasure. You might like to keep an extra copy in the car.

Outstanding!.......2003-02-08
This directory spotlights the best of Texas gardens. Many are hard-to-find treasures you'll recommend to gardening friends and family as great destination spots, or as ideal along-the-way travel breaks while driving through the state.
The guide book provides details about each special garden: days and hours, garden type, size, themes, special "don't-miss" features, and even "bird alert" notes for birders. Many Texans don't know about these secret places -- I didn't! -- but with TOURING TEXAS GARDENS you'll find favorites to return to, time and again.

Book Description
This volume deals with the philosophical and exegetical doctrines of one of the greatest figures of the Golden Age of Spain - Moses Ibn 'Ezra, as they appear in his Garden of the Metaphor (Maqalat al-hadiqa). The latter, a study of man in his spiritual and physical aspects, is a resume of all that a cultured Judaeo-arabic individual should know about philosophy. The author reviews the biblical metaphors dealing with man, against the background of the intellectual and literary climate of the period. FR Franse tekst beschikbaar

Product Description
When he died in 1933, James J. Gentleman Jim Corbett was honored by two distinguished groups of people: the professional boxing public, who celebrated him as Americas greatest boxing champion, and the world of popular theater admirers, who revered him as one of Broadways top vaudeville headliners. Corbett was uniquely instrumental in making boxing and popular theater both justifiable commercial enterprises, to be enjoyed by all classes of people. He became Americas first national sports hero and went on to formulate the theater worlds star system. This is the first definitive biography of the man who knocked out heavyweight champion John L. Sullivan, and who also knocked out audiences who flocked to see him in vaudeville and silent pictures. The focus herein is on the real man, the influences on his life, and the social and commercial environment within which he functioned. The author reveals that Corbett was a complex, driven, enigmatic man whose dedicated participation in popular entertainment changed American social values and mores, and at the same time reinvented the notion of a national hero.
Customer Reviews:
The Amazing Adventures of Gentleman Jim.......2001-11-26
Considering the major impact he had on boxing, theater, and early motion pictures, the life of James J. "Gentleman Jim" Corbett (1866-1933) has been only lightly tapped by biographers until the meticulously researched "James J. Corbett: A Biography of the Heavyweight Boxing Champion and Popular Theater Headliner" by social historian Armond Fields.
More than 100 years after Corbett knocked out John L. Sullivan in New Orleans to become the heavyweight champion of the world, we finally have the definitive biography of a man who engaged life, evolved as he needed to, and succeeded in two demanding professions - boxing and acting.
One of ten children born to Irish immigrants in San Francisco, James J. Corbett continually aspired to a better life and increased social status. He benefited greatly from a natural willingness to learn, particularly from famed Olympic Club boxing instructor Walter Watson. Corbett's good looks, easy charm, and awareness of the "value of a good tailor" provided a marked contrast to other boxers, especially Sullivan, who rampaged through life, numerous saloons, and many marginally skilled opponents.
As Fields points out, boxing was moving toward greater social acceptance at the time Corbett's career was rising. Corbett's cultivated image of a well-dressed gentleman and a student of his sport helped engender a public acceptance of "scientific" gloved contests under the Marquis of Queensbury rules.
Aside from the nickname Gentleman Jim, which he did not care for, Corbett is widely known for his championship win over Sullivan in 1892, and his loss to Bob Fitzsimmons in 1897.
Although covering familiar ground on the the road to the Sullivan fight, the author provides a wonderful sense of the growing confidence of young Corbett. He outclasses slugger Jake Kilrain, draws with the powerful Peter Jackson (after 61 rounds), and then correctly calculates he could accomplish the unthinkable task of besting Sullivan. Fields' description of the Fight of the Century on a sweaty night in New Orleans is the soaring point of "James J. Corbett."
The famous "solar plexus" punch as the real cause of Corbett's loss to Fitzsimmons gets little credence from the author. As detailed by Fields' research, by the time of the Fitzsimmons fight, Corbett still had enthusiasm for boxing, but his passion was for the stage.
While Corbett fought only three major bouts during his championship years from 1892 to 1897, he continuously toured the US, Canada, and Europe, starring in various theater productions. Fields concludes, with much evidence, that the hard life of a travelling 1890's actor must have been distracting for our man Jim.
Fitzsimmons, on the other hand, bounced into the ring in Carson City, Nevada on St. Patrick's Day, 1897, with only boxing in his heart and soul. His frustration at having recently lost a bout to Tom Sharkey focused Ruby Bob on one intention - winning the championship from Jim Corbett. Although James J. fights beautifully for most of the 14 rounds, his title yields to the devastating punching power of Fitzsimmons.
In "James J. Corbett", one senses Corbett's extraordinary ability to bob and weave through the end of the 19th century and into the 20th. Vaudeville declines and he capitalizes on his boxing fame and acting experience to transition to silent films. When acting work is slim, Corbett opens a successful Manhattan saloon. His first marriage (at age 19) fails, so he creates a good second marriage with actress Vera Stanwood, lasting 38 years until his death at home in Bayside Queens. Clearly, this is a man who could reinvent himself and always find a way to pay his bills at the same time.
Fields skillfully provides enough background for the reader to access the historical context of Corbett's life changes while not losing any feeling for the momentum in this engaging story of a "complex, driven, enigmatic" man who seems forever on the move. Just as Robert Cantwell did for Kid McCoy in "The Real McCoy", and Michael T. Isenberg did for John L. Sullivan in "John L. Sullivan and His America", Armond Fields provides the definitive work on James J. Corbett, putting the man in the context of his era. And a great era it was.

An adventerous life and times viewed from a social historia.......1998-09-21
A surpassing interest in the first of anything is as old asAdam. Just as we are different from the first man and yet in many waysstill the same, Dean Mohamed is also different from the first of Amitav Ghosh, Arundhati Roy, Vikram Chandra, or Shashi Tharoor... You name them .
The main difference is in the use of the language and the market targeted. The similarity lies in the location and contemporary timing of subject matter - their own India!
