This guide is well written. Some of the stories had new items that I hadn't read before in other books. I recommend this book to anyone interested in ghosts. It a great read even if you do plan on traveling to these places.
Great Guide Book for Those Into Ghostly Places.......2004-09-01
If you're interested in visiting inns, hotels and B&Bs with a reputation for being haunted, this is the best book to have in your travel bag. All 50 states are represented, and the authors have truly done their homework. 200 lodgings are included, each with the name of the inn, its street address, phone number, website address, room rates, payment types accepted, and a rating of one to five "ghosts" based on the level of ghostly activity. Each entry includes a history of the inn (and, in some cases, a photograph), a description of the accommodations, and reports of haunted activity at the inn, often based on the authors' personal experiences. The book is written to entertain as well as enlighten, and it's an easy and fun read. If you're planning a trip, be sure to check this book before you leave so you won't miss out on any haunted inns that may be at your destination!

Invaluable Resource.......2007-08-20
This book is essential for all Landscape Architects and designers and I highly recommend purchasing this latest printing. This book contains everything a designer needs for information and industry-wide standards that are used everyday as well as some that are not used everyday - this book puts it all together into one concise reference that should be kept within arms reach at all stages of the design process. I currently work with the author and he is extremely knowledgeable and experienced. Even if you have previous editions of this book, get this edition as it has been updated with current standards.
Outstanding resource for landscape architects (and students too).......2007-05-05
Leonard Hopper has done a tremendous job of compiling an immense amount of information that covers a broad expanse of topics relevant to landscape architecture, from site analysis to the design of zoo exhibits and everything in between. One of the book's best and most useful features is the enormous compilation of detailed construction diagrams for all sorts of site elements. To top things off, the entire book is very well organized and easy to use.
For years the only book with similar information was Time Saver Standards, which I have always found to be difficult to navigate, poorly organized, and lacking in the kind of detail I really need. Landscape Architectural Graphic Standards is a FAR better book.

An absorbing trip through American history, courtesy of a family of vivid dreamers and high achievers. Gail Lumet Buckley had access to a remarkable family archive of scrapbooks, photographs and journals and does great justice to it, crafting a multigenerational portrait that is enlightening and highly readable. Although Buckley's mother, Lena Horne, is the most famous member of the family, the book makes it clear that she was only one of its noteworthy success stories. For anyone wanting to know more about what America was like for middle-class blacks in the Reconstruction and beyond, "The Hornes" is a wonderful place to begin.

I will come back and give a more thorough review the next time I visit the site, but in the absence of any other commments I will quickly throw down some of my observations.
First: This book is less of a pleasure read as it is an academic History of Science read. It feels as though this is White's dissertation papers (or perhaps his dissertation). To that extent, while it is a very thoughtful piece, it feels as though White is trying to bend history so as to create a problem that academic scrutiny can solve.
Second: There is invaluable interpretation of Thomas Huxley as an idea (if not an ideologue) and as a visionary who intended to
Third: This may sound like a repetition of the first point, but passages of this book feel forced. Believe me, I read this as part of honors coursework and even incorporated it into my final paper and I felt as though I was forcing things when I was referencing it (although the professor apparently did not think that my interpretation was forced and gave me an 'A' on that paper).
That said, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in turning points in the History of Science.
