Take-along Travel Guide.......2001-03-15

I can't say enough about how useful this Travel Smart guide was on our recent trip to the Southwest. As Daniel Gibson claims, he only includes the best of what there is to see and do, only the best places to eat and stay. All this info is rated 1-4 stars and we found the ratings to be surprisingly accurate compared with our own opinions. The book is so organized that it's easy to find what you're looking for; places are cross referenced for easy research. We kept the book with us and read ahead about what was coming up as we traveled. Prices were either right on or close to present charges. Descriptions were interesting and fun to read, and detailed enough to help us decide whether or not we wanted to stop at each attraction. If you only want to take one book along on your next trip to the southwest, you won't go wrong with this one.

The ONLY book of this type on the market!.......2000-10-22

With a subject as narrow as Native Americans in a single and specific state, this book was very thorough. Subjects ranged from individual tribe appearance and dress to the specific foods and dwellings used by each. There are detailed maps showing which region each of the ten chief tribes inhabited while in Texas and what caused the disappearance of most from this state.

As a research tool for children I rate this an A+!

Not the kind of book I was looking for.......2006-10-10

I thought this was a book to help consumers realize why they buy things they don't need, and thereby stop doing it. But it's the opposite -- it's aimed at helping businesses tap into our buying impulses and sell us MORE stuff! If you're a business looking to raise your sales, you might like this, but it was not at all what I wanted.

Kind of goes on and on.......2006-09-07

The comments by others about how the book at time rehashes statistics are true. At times I found myself glossing over pages just because it was number after number. I lost interest.

I also got to the point with the author's repeated fixation on 9/11 that I had to put the book down. Enough is enough. That fixation only revealed to me the fact that the author's insight and point of view is very limited to the current and is United States centric. The author doesn't address a broader global view of wants and have a historical perspective of why people want to help other spot future trends.

Its an interesting study.

I found that much of the people is a rehash of statistical studies in words. You may as well just look at the mathematical figures rather then read the words.

The other issue is the book was written not long after 911 and its long terms effects were over estimated by the writer.

Because I sell luxury home and gift items, I was drawn to the title of this book. Sometimes that is not always a good indicator of what is inside, but in this case it was dead-on. The book helped me understand what I've seen over the last few years, as well as gave me some insight into where things are heading (and why). I keep talking about the book, and the list of friends and associates who want to borrow the book keeps growing, although I may not want to give it up. Only a few more pages to go....

Good information on drying plants.......2006-07-13

Excellent detailed information on many different ways to dry flowers including charts on how long flowers take to dry in different methods and which methods should be used for which plants. This takes up about half the book and is very useful for those frustrated with the few miserable pages that most books give on drying.
The rest of the book is taken up with a variety of flower displays for different styles and seasons. Instructions are given but they are fairly basic such as "add hydrangea from front and center' For a beginner these instructions may not be sufficient to achieve the results show without a lot of perseverance. The Majority of the photographs are good, helpful and easy to use as guides. A few however concentrate more on the scene than the display making it difficult to duplicate. Overall it's a very good book.
My major complaint about this book is the mixing of displays and instructions into the chapters on drying rather than concentrating them in one section of the book. It means you have to keep paging through to find what you want rather than just looking in one section.

This book is great for a beginner. I went to the library to find a book that would tell me how to dry my valentine roses. I so thourghly enjoyed this book I am going to buy it for myself as well as for others as a gift. Not only does it tell you how to dry flowers, but it demonstrates step by step how to grow them, and different ways to arrange them. It has beautiful pictures in it with arrangements from elegant, country to modern - something for everyone. I highly recommend it. It makes a lovely tabletop book as well as a reference book. The author Cathy Miller has designed flower arrangements for presidents throughout the years, even for President Clinton who has allergies. Cathy has designed the flower arrangements for him encased in glass!

Great for color combinations.......2006-07-13

This book has a big emphasis on color and color combinations. The front of the book has pages of dried flower bunches grouped by color and the arrangements shown within the books pages all revolve around keeping within certain colors and color schemes to be used at particular times of the year or for certain occasions. Details a variety of different styles of arrangements and discusses texture and style. Photos are used to show arrangements for inspiration for your own ideas there are no detailed instructions to make particular items. There is some detailed information about making flower swags and ropes not found in a lot of books. I would not say this a book for a beginner it might be a bit intimidating but it's a great companion book anyone who wants to be creative.

Dried Flower Growing, Harvesting, and Arranging Made Easy.......2001-07-28

This book makes you want to run right out and cut a bundle of something to dry so you can make something gorgeous right away.

The fact that this book was first published in 1987 and is still being printed is testimony to the valuable information and beautiful photos contained inside.

When the two authors first penned this book, they had already been in the dried flower business for 17 years. Their expertise and understanding of their craft shows in every word they write.

Chapters include instructions for growing the plants, viewing what the plants look like when dried, choosing your wreath bases or making your own, constructing wreaths, hangings, bouquets, swags, and choosing containers for table arrangements.

One of the best features of this book is the chart at the back of the book that lists a hundred or more plants, their botanic names, which season to harvest the flowers or leaves and which drying method is the preferred for that plant.

There is a short reference to potpourri with several recipes, as well as a couple of pages on pressing flowers.

The section on Seasons and Special Occasions covers, not only the obligatory Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, but gives innovative ideas for weddings.

It is wonderful that the authors actually grow much of what they dry and that they air dry most of what they pick.

Every page has a tip or set of instructions to make your arrangements with dried flowers both successful and fun.

A Classic.......2001-01-19

I purchased this book 12 years ago when I developed an interest in making arrangements from dried flowers. Since then I have bought many more books on the topic and have made hundreds of arrangements, simple to elaborate. This is still my favorite book, and I refer to it often. Despite the fact that it was published in 1987, it is not dated. The section identifying dried flowers is comprehensive and well organized, as is the chapter on choosing containers. The instructions for making arrangements, wreaths, swags and specialty pieces are thorough and easy to follow. The floral arrangements are truly inspiring. The concepts are easily adaptable to silk, paper and fresh flowers.

Excellent reference book.......2006-07-13

This book has some truly excellent information. It has many detailed pages about how to grow, harvest dry and store flowers using a variety of techniques. The rest of the book is taken up with an encyclopedia of different flowers what they are best used for, how to dry them, how well they stand up and everything else you need to know about the plant.
It is divided into sections on annuals, perennials, trees, wild plants so it takes a little looking around to find what you want. If you are interested in growing and drying your own flowers this is the book you need. If you want a book on creating designs with the flowers this is not the book. It has a few designs but that is not it's primary focus. Consider this as an essential part of your library to complement the arrangement books.
My only complaint is that the index is not as comprehensive as it could be. Sometimes you have to page through the book to find the plant you want even if you do know the latin name.

I think this is a good beginner's book........2000-05-05

I checked this book out of my local library and found some very helpful information. There is quite a bit of information on the history, planting, and care of various everlasting flowers.

How accurate is an "unauthorized" biography?.......2003-05-13

The professional information is most likely accurate. A listing
of movies and television roles for Dean Stockwell could be found
in a number of places, and then used in this book. You cannot,
however, really vouch for all other information if the author
never even had the chance to interview the actor and find out if
stories and anecdotes are true. I didn't get the impression that
anything was over-played, but I still wondered if we had the whole
story. Being something of a Dean Stockwell fan, I would rather
like to know that he was really well-represented by a book such
as this. (I do have to say, though, that the author of this
book never made me feel that she was trying to sensationalize
any part of the story.)
