Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica & St. Lucia - Alive.......2000-08-15
My wife and I went to St. Lucia in April. We had prepared for our trip by reading all this book had to say about the island, which was very helpful in planning day trips, money exchange, restaurants, etc. We took the book with us and it was extremely helpful with maps when we drove around the island, and the different side trips off the main road. I would highly recommend it to any who are planning a trip to that area!
An excellent and practical guidebook........2000-02-04
Lynne Sullivan's Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica & St. Lucia Alive focuses on the best of the regions, from shopping to outdoors activities and nightclubs. All details on customs, culture and opportunities are covered for destination-bound visitors.

Book Description
The highly-anticipated sequel to the lively, compelling The Guns of Valverde (Kirkus Reviews)The battle of Valverde is over, and Jamie Russell, now a Confederate war hero, returns home to his family. Jamies sister Emma has been shattered by the death of her true love at Valverde. Worried about their daughter, Jamies parents convince him to escort Emma to Galveston, where she is to reside with her aunt May. In Galveston Emma will have a chance to escape her monotonous life on the ranch, become a lady, and perhaps leave the memory of death behind her.Jamie soon discovers that Galveston lacks the defenses it needs to ward off a Union naval attack. Troubled by leaving his sister and aunt in a place susceptible to Unionstakeover, Jamie returns to his unit and begs with Confederate officers to have Galvestons defenses strengthened. His pleas fall on deaf ears. Union warships arrive in Galveston Bay, taking it for the Federals and confirming Jamies worst fears. Now Jamie must travel back to Galveston in a secret Confederate operation to reclaim the city and rescue his family.

Nice Series..........2004-12-05
A good read for time traveling outdoors from the comfort of your armchair. The series covers a view of the Civil War in the West (New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, and the Mississipi-Red River) that is refreshing. The descriptions of outdoor New Mexico, Galveston and Louisiana/Missippi in the Civil War period of the 1860's are fascinating and transporting. The series is an easy, comfortable read probably best started at the beginning with Glorietta Pass, but could be started with any book without much backtracking. P.G. Nagle provides a comfortably realistic set of characters, which to me, provide neither a uniquely feminine nor masculine view of War life-- quite a trick to pull off well in what is essentially a long story of the Civil War. The changing society of of the Civil War offers a contrast between the raw frontier in New Mexico and early pre-industrial city life in bigger cities like Galveston and Houston. The effects of railroads and steam-driven shipping on the West is caught in a frozen picture of change within the narrow timeframe of the Civil War. While I found this series to be interesting adult fiction, they would make a fine gift for an avid teenage reader as well.

Book Description
Exemplary teacher research has established that explicit teaching plays a vital role in the K-8 classroom, with particular benefits for struggling readers. This book is a practical resource for explaining reading to students who do not learn to read easily. Identified are 22 major skills and strategies associated with vocabulary development, comprehension, word recognition, and fluency. Ways to explain each skill or strategy are illustrated with abundant concrete examples, which teachers can use as starting points for developing lessons tailored to the needs, strengths, and interests of their own students. The book also shows how to move from the teacher's explanation to the student's independent use of new concepts, and how to embed explicit teaching within a context of rich, engaging literacy experiences.
Customer Reviews:
Analytical explanation of reading.......2007-01-04
I am a tutor for third and fourth graders (employed by the school) and have found this book to be priceless in explaining the strategies of reading to 8, 9 and ten year olds - my target audience. The book is structured well and offers many examples of how to help struggling readers learn the "secrets" of good readers. After looking at several other 'Reading Comprehension' books, I chose this one based on the TOC and the foreward. It has proven to REALLY help me clarify each objective and teach the invisible process of active reading to my students. I'm very excited about the book and what it has to offer. Thanks!
Excellent book.......2006-02-20
I bought this book last year from Amazon, after being recommended it by a resource literacy teacher. It is very helpful to me, a classroom teacher. I would recommend it as great value for any teacher. I recently had the pleasure of hearing G Duffy speak at a day's conference here in New Zealand. He was so clear, so able to show the recent history of the teaching of reading, and how we might go about showing students the skills of comprehension, and what good readers do. In this book, G Duffy helps teachers model what good readers do. He is realistic and down to earth.
Great Resource for Literacy Coaches.......2005-05-04
This is a wonderful book to use while working with teachers in your building. Use it as a resource for yourself or share it with teachers to support what you are saying or modeling in their classrooms. After you have identified the strategy or skill the students are having trouble with, locate the skill in the index. Then read through the pages as Dr. Duffy describes the conceptual understanding that must be in place for the students to learn the skill. He also outlines how to introduce the skill, model the thinking, scaffold towards independence, apply it in reading and writing, and determine how to know if the lesson was successful. Some topic categories are vocabulary, comprehension strategies, word recognition, and fluency.
Individual chapters cogently provide examples.......2003-10-14
Gerald G. Duffy is a former classroom teacher and professor emeritus at Michigan State University. He draws upon his many years of experience and his considerable expertise in Explaining Reading: A Resource For Teaching Concepts, Skills, And Strategies to provide the reader with a solid guide for aiding in their teaching literacy to students who are slow to absorb the skill. Individual chapters cogently provide examples and ideas for explaining vocabulary, teaching word recognition, comprehension strategies, and a great deal more. Explaining Reading is highly recommended as an excellent and detailed advice guide -- especially for classroom teachers and home schoolers involved in a literacy instructional program.

More lucid than most humanity has the privilege to be.......2003-12-01
First it must be said that take what Marlene Dietrich says literaly, without reporting ourselves to the particular humour of germans intelectuals of her generation, Brecht included, is misunderstand it all. It it also well to remember the habits of a class that had "épater les bourgeois" as a habit. With Marlene ich word has many meanings and, some times, a little box contains a bigger one inside and then another, and another one. Few knew how to deal with the notion that truth is the multiple illusions of truth, and play so sharply with it. Most of the times for will of good, even if this good was her path towards the liberty of a precipice edge.
Then it is remarkable the incredibly effective way she educates Hanut by telephone. And, for one time, Marlene achieves her education efforts. Hanut, after she was no more there to scream at him, became not a suicidal desperate boy, but a quite interessing man publishing a series of books, with titles that seem the fruit of a research of himself and wisdom. It is not important if Marlene should agree with the conclusions of this books. It is important that she got him from the pit and made him meet the force to continue to live with dignity and to discover his way. One has to admire the cleverness of her method, hidden in apparent casuality. To do this one may drink, take pills, but one must be more lucid than most of humanity has the privilege to be.
Marlene Dietrich's Grandson comments.......1999-04-23
As Marlene Dietrich's youngest Grandson, I am often made aware of books written, or even legends told that involve the often herculian efforts and opinions of my Grandmother. I was both pleased and saddened in the case of "I wish you love". Tragically, my Grandmother chose to remain without the care our family intended for her, and as a result spent these years very much without supervision or even basic human contact. The author was one of many people, hardly known, with whom she continued a correspondence or schedule of phone calls to fill this void. For the comfort this gave her, I am grateful. For the chronicled accounts of her comments, I have less gratitude. While there is great enjoyment in seeing her rendered opinions so fathfully in print, one might also understand the sobering reality that they changed oftan, sometimes within a single sentence. Because of her on-going pain associated with her hip and legs, she drank and took pain medication to excess. While this is reflected by her manner in many parts of the book, the natural reverence of the author for Marlene's celebrity has failed to firmly place these conversations in what was, regrettably, the tragic context of her condition. Regardless, for those of us who had the benefit of this insight, the book remains an honest portait of Marlene's style, if not her truth.
An extraordinary story of friendship and love.......1999-02-04
An unusually fine celebrity memoir surfaces in Eryk Hanut's I WISH YOU LOVE-CONVERSATIONS WITH MARLENE DIETRICH.for several years before Dietrich's death, in 1992, at the age of 91, Hanut, a young dane living in Paris, carried on wide-ranging phone chats with the aged star.Hanut's records of these talks reveal Dietrich as an intelligent woman of fiery opinion, and the author as a sensitive soul who here offers neither hagiography nor indictment ,but a tender, thoughtful appreciation of a woman turned legend PUBLISHERS WEEKLY April 1996
This is a compelling and fascinating true story........1999-01-22
I think that the "Kirkus Review"totally misrepresents (as it does for many good books)the essence of this really interesting account of Dietrich's last years.I have read many books about Dietrich, studied and enjoyed her films and find this a beautifully moving portrayal of a true and wonderful friendship. Howard Kissel, in " The New York Daily News" called it "well written" and "compelling"; Many details in the book about Dietrich's life were unknown to me and I appreciated the author's subtle analysis of her fame and the way she dealt with it; To conclude, I find this book refreshing because it is also mostly about gratitude; and not one more "dysfunctional family saga" as in the Mommie Dearest tradition.
