RE: The Palenque Jungle Hike.......1999-02-27
I found Jim Conrad's book very informative & it inspired me to hike the jungle trail behind the Palenque ruins in Chiapas. The discription of first part of the hike was very accurate. However, once my husband & I reached the second part of the hike, it became apparent that Mr. Conrad never actually finished the hike himself. The descriptions faded out & we ended up hiking at least 5 miles farther than the book describes. I just wanted to warn anyone else hiking the Palenque trail that hiking the full circle is much farther than the book indicates. When you get to the river & over the hanging bridge (well worth it), you might want to turn around & head back the way you came, through the jungle & back to the ruins. The rest of the way is a gravel farm road(estimated 5-7 miles)to the road main road leading back to Palenque city.

Think before you buy.......2001-11-13
I purchased this book to expose my Pre-K students to the numbers 1 through 10, and I was disappointed that it's out of their league. The text is really for 7 or 8 year olds. Also, be forwarned that the number six refers to Los Ninos Heroes (Boy War Heroes who were killed by a U.S. invasion). The accompanying illustration depicts the boys fighting, firing rifles, and one boy is wounded(bleeding). Also, the number nine depicts a matador ("killers of the bulls") about to plunge a sword into a charging, bleeding bull. Consider your audience before purchasing this book.

A plus for beginning Reefers.......2001-06-17
Dr. Herbert Axelrod continues to pass on his aquatic prowess in this book for coral enthusiasts. Novice reefkeepers should definitely invest in this book as it is very easy to read and understand. Experienced reefkeepers would even profit from having this book in their aquatic library for reference at any time, as it is thorough in all the typically kept hard and soft corals. Each coral is given its own color-coded review for difficulty of keeping and put into one of three catagories, green for beginners, yellow for experienced keepers of corals, and red for those who consider themselves experts. On the whole this is a great reference for anyone who is considering keeping corals, either for the first time or continuing to keep them after years of experience.
Excellent photos!!!.......1999-03-25
Excellent photos and good guide for beginners in picking corals...Better than some kid at the local fish store!!!
outdated and misleading-forget about this one!.......1999-03-09
Somewhat disorganized and very misleading, due for the most part because its outdated. It categorizes as hard to keep most of the SPS corals that are common to the hobby today. The pictures aren't that great and I'm still searching for the "care & breeding" section that the book's title refers to.This book is truly a waste of money!
Book Description
For more than 500 years the gardens of Italy have attracted visitors from all over the world. Many of the greatest artists and architects of the Renaissance were employed in their design and ornamentation. Italian Gardens is a practical and beautifully illustrated guide to more than 60 of the finest examples, from the seventeenth-century gardens of Castello d'Aglie in Piedmont to the thirteenth-century Moorish garden of the Villa Rufolo in Campania. As well as well-known gardens (for example, the Boboli gardens, Florence, Villa d'Este outside Rome), the book takes visitors away from the well-trodden tourist paths to a private world of beauty and, often, eccentricity. Both practical and up to date, the guide provides histories and descriptions, as well as detailed information on locations, facilities, opening times, and accessibility.
Customer Reviews:
I miss my companion !.......2002-07-05
On a recent visit to Italy I went prepared with Penelope Hobhouse Edith Wharton and Helena Ramsay and it was not until I loaned the latter out that I realised how useful it is as you try and find your way around the hazards of being a garden addict in that country !!
(Reviewed at length on the u k site)
I endorse nearly everything that the previous writer says but would like to add how practical it is as the directions to the gardens are not easily found in any other guide or Tourist Office.
I'd be very happy to have it back !
Don't let the small format fool you.......2001-05-18
At first glance, the small format of this book (only 3 x 4 inches, appx.) might lead you to forget about it. Don't make that mistake. Ramsay & Attlee have provided much more information about the history and features of the Italian Gardens than can be found in the "rival" Garden Lovers Guide to Italy by Hobhouse. Little of their material is new, but in compiling the best facts & anecdotes from Wharton, Masson, Lazzaro, et al., Ramsey & Attlee have written the book which I would be most likely to take along with me as a guide to the gardens. The one main fault of the volume is that by devoting more space to each gardens, the number of gardens covered has been reduced. For example, at Lago Maggiore, the Isola Bella is covered, but the Isola Madre is not. Probably the best thing to do if one is going off on a garden tour of Italy is to read Edith Wharton and Claudia Lazzaro before you go, and then to take both Ramsay & Attlee's book and Hobhouse's Guide along on the journey.

Just as the King of Rock n' Roll will never really die, so will his financial empire continue to fascinate. Part way between a biography of the musical icon and a business book, Elvis Inc. recounts the fiscal rise of the legend and details the problems and possibilities that later developed with the massive estate he left behind. Penned with the sensitivity of a fan and the perception of a business writer, Sean O'Neal recounts how Presley's fortunes crashed and burned and then were resurrected to previously unimagined heights -- even after the King had abdicated his position in the material world.
Book Description
Elvis Presley made more money in his lifetime than any other performer in history. Yet, when he died, his estate was nearly bankrupt. In
Elvis Inc., author Sean O'Neal reveals the abysmal condition the estate was in when Elvis died, and how Elvis Presley Enterprises turned the estate into the huge success it is today, raking in more than $100 million a year. Here is a glimpse of what's revealed in
Elvis Inc.:
Why the second floor of Graceland is off-limits to the public
Why Elvis never toured outside the United States
How much Elvis' relationship with Colonel Tom Parker cost him
Customer Reviews:
The Elvis Empire uncovered.......2000-04-10
ELVIS INC. is one-stop shopping for anything to do with Elvis and money. All but the first chapter deal with events after Elvis' death. Especially good are the sections on the estate's lawsuit against manager Parker in the early 1980s, and on the stratospheric rise of Graceland after near-bankruptcy in the two years after Elvis died. There is more detail in this book on these subjects than I have seen anywhere else. Toward the end I did feel that the book loses a little focus, and is not quite as pertinent as the first half. As, O'Neal goes off on some tangents, such as the marriage of Lisa Marie to Michael Jackson. To be fair, though, more recent events are just not as salient. But O'Neal keeps it always interesting. And I love that pink cover - groovy, man!
Interesting, Informative and a real Eye-opener of EPE.......1999-01-14
As an Elvis fan, I have read a great number of books about Elvis and his life. What makes this book stand out from the others is the fact that the reader gets a good look at how Elvis Presley, the person has grown into Elvis Presley Enterprises, the money-maker. It is well known by now that Colonel Tom Parker hindered Elvis' career in many ways. Even though he helped Elvis make it to the top, Elvis had the sheer talent to make it with or without Parker. In this book, it is revealed how much Parker actually took from Elvis in the monetary sense. When Elvis died, his estate was nearly bankrupt due to his lavish spending and poor management of his money. But as you realize when you read this book, Elvis Presley Enterprises has gone to great lengths to make it the money machine it is today. O'Neal gives details on lawsuits EPE has won and lost and tells you of some of the future plans EPE has in store. There is also a chapter on Elvis' only heir, Lisa Marie and there is a detailed account of her inheritance as well as the "relationship" with Michael Jackson. I would recommend this book to anyone, Elvis fan or not. Every page had something interesting and new and I found it hard to put down.
Terrific!.......1998-12-05
Elvis fans, buy this book. You fill find out just what a business Elvis really was (before and after death) to people like Priscilla and Parker to name a few. Terrific book!

Book Description
Between the meeting of the Long Parliament in November 1640 and the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, and as a consequence of the defeat of the armies of Charles I and the Civil Wars and the failure of subsequent royalist conspiracies and rising, several hundred Cavaliers went into exile on the Continent, for periods ranging from a few weeks to twenty years. This book examines their experience: the identity of the exiles; their reasons for leaving England; the extent of their travels in Europe; how they, and their families coped with the ordeal; the role of the different Stuart "courts" as magnets to the exiles; the return to England at the Restoration; how they were treated on their return and how they had been influenced by their enforced resident abroad.

Book Description
Emigration from Scotland has always been very high. Some may assume that it peaked with the Highland clearances. However, emigration from Scotland between the wars surpassed all records; more people emigrated than were born, leading to an overall population decline. Why did so many people leave? Marjory Harper maps out the many factors which worked together to cause this massive diaspora. After an opening section where the author sets the Scottish experience within the context of the rest of the British Isles, the book then divides the country geographically, starting with the Highlands, then coastal Scotland and the urban Lowland, highlighting in turn the factors that particularly influenced each of these areas. Harper then goes on to talk about the organized religious and political movements that encouraged emigration and ties them into the story. Interweaving personal stories with statistical evidence, she brings to life the reality behind the dramatic historical migration.
