Pretty Pictures.......2007-02-23
I'm traveling to Costa Rica and I'm interested in well-rounded traveling advice; this book had some pretty pictures but fell short of the necessities for planning a trip. It explored cultural, political and economical conditions of Costa Rica but didn't provide the details pertaining to areas of interest, hotels, restaurants or local perspectives - all things I find valuable before and while traveling. For instance, I'm flying into Liberia and need to book a hotel. Chris' book had less than 2 pages ( factual revealing, but not practical) on the city, didn't provide maps, hotel reviews or relevant information for getting down and dirty or just around town. Sorry for the slam brother - stick to the shutter.
Hard to navigate.......2006-12-04
This book is very beautiful, the pictures are all in color and amazing. But, if you want to truly use this book as a travel reference while on the road you're going to have a hard time. There is no index in this book...I just can't understand why. I was so frustrated when trying to find information that I bought a far superior Frommer's and I no longer reference the N.G. book. But again, the pictures sure are pretty.
Whet your Appetite!!!.......2006-06-07
I read this book cover to cover before my first trip to Costa Rica and had highlighted a number of places I intended to visit. This book was EXTREMELY helpful in giving an accurate description of geographic regions, landmarks, customs, and general travel information. It made my trip much easier knowing what to expect. In addition, after returning, it was fun to compare the photos in the book to the ones I had taken. The beautiful photos in the book were not just "travel" photos to entice you to visit, but accurate photos of how beautiful and incredible Costa Rica is!

Unlike the soul-baring performances that have drawn listeners to her for four decades, Aretha Franklin is a bit cagey when it comes to discussing her personal life in her autobiography, From These Roots. The famously press-shy Aretha is a free-speaking anecdote spinner and a blunt sharer of opinions of coworkers and fellow artists. (Don't get her started on Natalie Cole.) But some areas remain blurry; for instance, her troubled first marriage to a temperamental music-business figure named Ted White is covered in only a tiny handful of pages. Other happier memories of lovers and of her late father, the famed minister Rev. C.L. Franklin, find her in a more expansive mood. Most consistently indelible in this telling, though, is her musical story. Born in 1942, she grew up around some of the century's greatest singers--Clara Ward, Dinah Washington, and Sam Cooke were all family friends. A voice that many consider the world's finest, a strikingly individual touch on piano, and an eclectic ear for material combined to make her a notable artist who moved quickly from the gospel circuit to Columbia Records and moderate success in a variety of contexts, from show tunes to a gritty tribute to Washington. Her reminiscences of those days, and of the conquests that followed when she moved to the forefront of the soul revolution after signing to Atlantic, are obviously still fresh for her. A formidable presence even in her 20s, Aretha continues to be a daunting figure. While From These Roots isn't as splashy a triumph as her 1967 Atlantic debut or her house-rocking at the 1998 Grammys with a rendition of Puccini's "Nessun dorma," the book does make for an irresistible reflection on a singular woman and her art. --Rickey Wright
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
The bluesy voice of narrator Ann Duquesnay lends an authentic quality to this inspirational and revealing biography on Aretha Franklin. Duquesnay's lyrical narration relates well with the events of the singer's life and colors each moment with a lively nod toward Franklin's immense talent. "When my piano teacher came to the house, I would hide behind the coats in the back of the closet because I thought her exercises far too elementary. I wanted to skip to the intermediate material. I wanted to run before I could walk." Tracing Franklin's life from a child singing in church choirs through hard times as an unwed teenage mother to her dramatic rise to superstardom, Duquesnay gives voice to the lifetime of family, music, and faith that gave the world the Queen of Soul. (Running time: 6 hours, 4 cassettes) --George Laney
Book Description
Her soulful, soaring voice has earned her mythic status. Now, in her own moving words, the woman behind the myth is revealed. The result is a captivating self-portrait of one of this century's most fascinating artists, an Aretha Franklin as real as the songs she sings.
For the first time anywhere, Aretha tells her story--the glorious triumphs as well as the heartbreaking pain. With refreshing candor, Aretha tells it like it is, the way she sees it, the way she lived it.
A child prodigy of the golden age of gospel, the daughter of a world-famous preacher, Aretha was the anointed successor to Mahalia Jackson and Clara Ward. But her father had a broader vision and helped Aretha enter the field of pop and jazz. By age eighteen, she was under contract to Columbia Records. Six years later, after only a few minor hits, she switched to Atlantic, where she shook the musical world to its roots. Her song "Respect" became the anthem of an epoch, a touchstone for African Americans, for women, for all people struggling to be free. Aretha became the Queen of Soul, the genre's finest interpreter since Ray Charles.
In
Aretha: From These Roots, the singer gets up-close and personal. In rich detail, she paints a vivid picture of a Detroit long gone: the storefront churches, the basement parties, the explosive R&B shows. She documents her life as a single teenage mother, working to balance home life with career, coping with two challenging marriages and, later, romantic relationships that were the source of both tremendous joy and unforeseen heartache.
Along the way, we meet the characters who lit up her life: her charismatic father, the Reverend C. L. Franklin, "the man with the million-dollar voice"; Sam Cooke, the man of her dreams; her singing sisters, Erma and Carolyn, and her manager-brother, Cecil; her famous colleagues--Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, Luther Vandross, and Luciano Pavarotti--as well as some famous rivals.
Aretha emerges as a triumphant woman of rare wit, willing to share with us her passion for great music, great food, and great love affairs. Her book does more than illuminate some of the most exciting songs ever sung; it lets you into the heart and mind of the mesmerizing woman who sang them.

Don't Bother.......2007-05-25
I've been listening to pop, rock, soul, R&B, reggae, world music, etc., etc. for roughly fifty years, and I will always maintain that Aretha, in her prime, was the greatest singer I've ever heard or ever will hear. That's why I picked up this book. However, there's no getting around what a huge disappointment it is. There is something false and brittle about the whole enterprise. From what I've read elsewhere, though a phenomenal talent, Aretha 's personal life was messy and her business and financial acumen left much to be desired. You get very little of that in this book. And how many times do I want to hear who designed a gown she was wearing or what posh hotel she stayed at? Or her many references to food and eating? I wanted to know about her personal life honestly related, and I wanted to know much more about the nuts and bolts of her musical career. For instance, there's barely any mention of the many great sidemen she worked with at Atlantic (Richard Tee, Cornell Dupree, Bernard Purdie, etc.), or of specific recording sessions. In the few interviews I've seen of her, she always comes across as distant, guarded, and slightly pretentious, and the book leaves you with the same impression. It's ironic that a vocalist whose performances ring so true can sound so false in print.
For deep fans only; agree with other reviewers.......2007-04-02
Aretha's life has too much meaning to give this anything less than 3 stars, but I'm pretty biased. I love soul music and gospel music and I gain from some of the silences that many of the other reviewers here justifiably complain about. There's deep meaning in her silences on her father's philandering and her mother's disappearance. There's deep meaning in the silences about the identity of Mr. Mystique, an unidentified prominent black male who she has a long running affair with. There's also deep meaning in the lack of explanation on her process and technique in making music.
I gained from hearing her talk about some of her influences such as Clara Ward, but again, that's probably information that's equally available elsewhere. Aretha has a reputation as a private diva who can be tough to deal with; this book won't really do much to counteract that sentiment because she's not that transparent.
Still, I feel an artist has a right to represent herself in the way that she's comfortable. I'm glad that I read this, although casual readers would be better advised to go elsewhere. I read "I Never Loved a Man", which is a book about her first album for Atlantic after reading "From These Roots". I found that much better and would recommend checking that out over this book for casual fans.
2.5 stars and that may be kind

Enjoyed The Queen of Soul's From These Roots.......2006-03-17
I'm surprised at all of the negative reviews of From These Roots. I checked this book out from the library twice and read it through both times. While reading it I felt as if I were sitting having a cup of coffee or tea with a good friend. I don't need to know the names of Aretha's babies' daddies, and I'm not gonna judge her for being a young unwed teenager. Her having babies as a teenager is not news to most people who grew up in the 60's and 70's. Everyone has always known that, and they were proud that she accomplished so much in spite of it. Not proud that she was a teenaged parent, but proud that she overcome all obstacles to achieve her dream. I'm quite sure that it must have been very hard on her at that young age. God only knows what she went through. Thank God that she excelled in her music. If not, she would be somewhere living in some projects in the ghetto, and living off of welfare and food stamps, and putting up with crap from her babies' daddies. Then, she would not be the Queen of Soul, and her name would not be a household word.
And another thing, I don't believe that her father just shrugged her pregnancies off with an "oh well, that's that." I know that he was probably devastated when he found out that his young unmarried teenage daughter was pregnant. But, what was he suppose to do, condemn her and kick her out? I'm quite sure that he reprimanded her, but he also supported her to help her get through the hard times. Which is probably why she was able to become as successful as she is.
Love ya' Aretha, and may you forever reign as the Queen of Soul.
Real average but this book ain't BAD!!!.......2005-09-30
Why's there much criticism or hypocrisy behind this book? Why u're gonna dis her or treat her like that 'cuz this is not REAL or it ain't Aretha at all? Ya'll haters should be ashamed. I'm happy to share one of my all-time favorite artists off this book co-written by her and writer himself Mr. David Ritz. When I getting ready to read this, I found it quite interesting to see behind the life and times of Aretha Louise Franklin (her full name). Can't describe to yet maybe later. She was and still is today THE QUEEN OF SOUL. She stands along as "Rev. Aretha" which is my new nickname to dubbed 'cuz she can blow and can knock the place down in a heartbeat like Bro. Ray Charles. Once I finished BROTHER RAY, I'm amazed to do the same w/ ARETHA: AFTER THESE ROOTS. And 1st and foremost, both of these books aren't that dissappointing or just depressing. Lemme they're Must-Haves and really Great books. Love 'em all. For all the naysayers and the haters need to go back listening to her albums or Greatest Hits compilations to prove your lil' interest and then or before read the book if that's the case. For the lovers that bought it and loved it and totally agree w/ it, I don't blame ya and I'm not gonna let ya'll down. Please stop w/ the fuss 'bout Aretha not being the Greatest Artist or Greatest Female Singer of All-Time since Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and Smokey Robinson. Truly a Must if u're interested. If not, then this in not 4 u, read something else or perhaps the Bible.
simply dreadful.......2005-04-23
I preface this review the way I always do when I write about Aretha Franklin. I am a long time fan and admirer. Lord knows the Queen of Soul has a heck of a story to tell. What's disappointing is that she doesn't really tell it. This is lightweight, to say the very least. SO MUCH is left to speculate, Aretha is cagey about many events, many people. In other words, if you're not gonna write a warts and all autobiography, and leave yourself open to the world, to your FANS, who really want the details, then don't do one at all. The only impression this book left me with is the enormity of Aretha Franklin's self-importance, and utter self-righteousness. A much better book is "Queen of Soul."

Book Description
In the misty dawn of January 31, 1921, a Coast Guardsman on watch at the Cape Hatteras Life-Saving Station sighted a mighty five-masted schooner, all sails set, wrecked on the treacherous Diamond Shoals. Rescuers rushed to the ship, but when they arrived they found the Carroll A. Deering deserted, with no trace of the captain, Willis B. Wormell, or the crew. When, several months later, a bottle was found on a nearby beach, purportedly containing a note from a crew member who ascribed the schooner's fate to its capture by pirates, a sensational panic in international shipping ensued. The captain's daughter successfully lobbied for a federal investigation, but months of inquiry failed to turn up either the missing crew or a reason for the ship's demise. To this day, the fate of the Deering has remained one of the greatest mysteries of maritime history.
Bland Simpson assembles the known facts into a compelling reconstruction of the Carol A. Deering's final voyage and its baffling aftermath. Using contemporary sources including newspapers, FBI reports, ship's logs, and personal and official correspondence, he weaves together historical narrative with the voices of key participants in the drama. Simpson's haunting chronicle keeps the story of the Deering alive, an apt memorial to the ghost ship and its lost crew.
Customer Reviews:
horrible writing style for a book, almost unreadable.......2005-12-23
I was really looking forward to reading this book over the Christmas holidays. I enjoy reading true, unsolved mysteries but after reading and rereading several pages I gave up.
Reading should be a pleasure and the reader should not have to keep rereading words and sentences to try and decipher what the author is trying to convey.
In reading this book it was like every sentence was overly long with each phrase seperated by commas when it seemed for clarity the sentences should have ended and a new sentence begun.
Also, have you every read a book when you get the impression the author is just trying to show you how intelligent he is by constantly using new uncommon words just to show you, the reader, how vast his vocabulary is? Also I noticed every noun in almost every sentence had to be preceded by about 3 descriptive words when one would have been fine most of the time.
Paragraph after paragraph has sentences like this:
"The gusting January wind blew spray and sand at them, and the damp sand gathered and caked upon the three foot, wooden spoked wheels, and the sea oats and grasses around them bent seaward, as the men and their boat slowly dragged through the dunes and over the open seabeach, the half-dozen men and the one beast drawing forward as if they next intended, like poseidon of old, to plough the very sea itself."
ALSO
"In the wet sand below the tideline the men halted and unhitched the front set of wheels from the boat carriage and led the mare forward into the shallow surf that was sheeting rapidly beneath tem, till the wheels were clear and the front fell into the water and made a skid down which the boat would go, and one of them walked the mare around and away, pulling now just the wheels, till she too was clear and unburduned and, standing alone and apart from the surfmen, looked away from them and their incompcomprehensible task".
Page after page of reading this type of writing becomes so tedious and frustrating you just give up and go on another book.
Just to be fair I want to let the readers of this review know I also ordered from Amazon two 900 page books, Shattered Swords(about the Battle of Midway) and Ultimate Sacrifice(about the Kennedy Assination)and I would wake up in the middle of the night and go back to reading both of these books because they were so well written.
Simpson's Best Yet.......2002-10-16
I started this book on a Saturday at 1:00 pm, and put it down, finished, eight hours later (and jumped right into "...Nell Cropsey" by author same. This is simply a must-read for any lover of shipwreck stories, mysteries, or American history...and particularly for anyone (like myself) who's fallen in love with coastal North Carolina. Thanks Bland!

I would like to read it if I could get hold of a copy........1999-08-14
Please help me in obtaining a copy of Ricky's book coz i just LOOOOVE his music and him too. But I would like to know more about him. My name is Surie and I am from Lusaka, Zambia. in the Central part of Africa.
why do you have only young women in you show?.......1999-07-28
Ricky,
Why do you have only young women in you shows dancing with you. There are differnt type of women that buy your CD for their children. I think, personally that if you held a contest for a mother, as to why they allow or buy your CD for their child, you would have a larger audience. Why you ask because people would want to know! Anything that promotes you people will will listen to! I for example, am a 36 year old mother of three. Why would a person think that I would not like your music? You are a young person and if you would want your popularity to follow you then I personally think it would be wise to think not only of the young "teens" out there. I like your music, your voice, if I did not I would not let my CHILDREN buy your music. I know that this will not ever get to you personally befor your "agents" read it first, but you have to think of where the money is coming from for your success. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PLEASE A FAN? HAVE YOUR AGENTS WRITE BACK AND SAY WHAT? THANK YOU FOR INPUT. WHICH I HAVE CC TO MY OWN EMAIL. GOOD LUCK. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. A BUYER AND A FAN FROM MY DAUGHTER.
If you love Ricky, you'll love this book.......1999-06-21
If you are a die hard fan of Ricky Martin this is one book you should definitely get your hands on. The book is filled with fabulous pictures of the singer from his hey days in the teen group Menudo through his years as the latin heart throb in General Hospital and all the way to the international mega star he is today. Besides the great pictures what I liked the most about his book was the way it was written, nice and simple and with a positive outlook all the way. A few things you should definitely look at when you buy this book are the trivia tid bits and the time line which are included. The quick information you learn here will make you seem like Ricky's number one fan. I truly recommend this book as a gift to anyone from the age of 10-100.
THE book to buy on Ricky Martin!.......1999-05-28

Wow, what a hunk of an inspiration!

Just to look at him is to know that he is hot cha-cha-cha! You may know that this hombre guapo began his career in the controversial all-boy group Menudo and that he starred in General Hospital, but there's so much more to Ricky than that.
Read on and discover:
Why his Puerto Rican heritage is so important to him
How several near-death experiences changed his life
What role spirituality has played along the way
What he'll be doing on New Year's Eve to usher in the year 2000
Where his sexy tattoo is hidden
What he looks for in a woman
And what the constellations have to say about him!
Plus there's fabu quotes, muy caliente photos, a complete discography, and a list and honors awards he's won in addition to the Grammy! Also be sure to check out the guides to some of his most favorite Puerto Rican foods (many of which can be tasted in his famed South Beach restaurant) and to the myriad forms of Latin music he enjoys!

A really good book about Ricky -- in Spanish too!.......1999-09-21
This is all the info you need, plus great pictures! Also it's translated into Spanish which I'm just learning, so it's fun to read the English part and then switch over to Spanish. I loved it!
