Book Description

These striking new guides to seven major destinations are so appealing that you won't be able to put them down--even after you've stopped traveling. Slender and light, they fit into your purse or pocket. The traveler gets a rich flavor of a city through 600 vibrant color photographs while being guided through the 400 best hotels, restaurants, shops, and cultural sights.

Each guide is divided into nine sections: Everything You Need to Know takes you into a given city and explains local transportation once you are there; Where to Stay lists 80 hotels with a wide range in price; Where to Eat includes everything from diners to four-star restaurants; After Dark shows you the clubs, discos, theaters, and concert halls; What to See guides the traveler from museums to cultural monuments and other places of interest; Further Afield provides 36 excursions just outside the city to historic houses, botanical gardens, zoos, or museums; and Where to Shop features 80 different boutiques, department stores, and markets. At the back are subway and bus routes and 10 double-page spreads of city Maps. Also included is the Business Reference Guide, with information for the business traveler on the city's stock exchange, major banks, business newspapers, television and radio stations, as well as a schedule of conventions.

SOME HIGHLIGHTS
The Knopf City Guide to BERLIN takes you to the beautiful neoclassical Schauspielhaus, home of the Berlin Symphony: to the former royal palace, Schloss Charlottenburg; to the Bodemuseum, one of Germany's greatest. You can listen to jazz at Quasimodo, and dance at Far Out or E-Werk.

4 out of 5 stars Good information on Berlin.......2000-05-12

One of the few guides I've ever seen where the restaurant information (at least on the eastern part of the city) was reliable -- we could trust it and find really good addresses, where there were few foreigners. Yes maps are small, but it's worth squinting!

2 out of 5 stars better than nothing.......2000-03-22

This guide does not compare well to the other guides that are available. Too bad there is not an Eyewitness guide for Berlin at the moment. You will probable be better off with the Lonely Planet Berlin guide. The maps in the Knopf guide are difficult to use, and the organization is very strange.

                      Book Description

"Authoritative, comprehensive, and fully documented. Everyone concerned with the history of Egyptology and with Petrie will have to make this fine biography their starting point of reference. Margaret Drower is scrupulously honest and gives us an admirably balanced portrait of this quite remarkable man."Nature Flinders Petrie has been called the "Father of Modern Egyptology"and indeed he is one of the pioneers of modern archaeological methods. This fascinating biography of Petrie was first published to high acclaim in England in 1985. Margaret S. Drower, a student of Petrie's in the early 1930s, traces his life from his boyhood, when he was already a budding scholar, through his stunning career in the deserts of Egypt to his death in Jerusalem at the age of eighty-nine. Drower combines her first-hand knowledge with Petrie's own voluminous personal and professional diaries to forge a lively account of this influential and sometimes controversial figure. Drower presents Petrie as he was: an enthusiastic eccentric, diligently plunging into the uncharted past of ancient Egypt. She tells not only of his spectacular finds, including the tombs of the first Pharaohs, the earliest alphabetic script, a Homer manuscript, and a collection of painted portraits on mummy cases, but also of Petrie's important contributions to the science of modern archaeology, such as orderly record-keeping of the progress of a dig and the use of pottery sherds in historical dating. Petrie's careful academic methods often pitted him against such rival archaeologists as Amlineau, who boasted he had smashed the stone jars he could not carry away to be sold, and Maspero and Naville, who mangled a pyramid at El Kula they had vainly tried to break into.

"[An] admirable and immensely readable biography, Margaret Drower's account of [Petrie] does full justice to a complex and multi-faceted life that brimmed over with energy and event. You don't have to be an archaeologist to enjoy this book, although I imagine that all archaeologists will welcome it without reserve."The Guardian

                      5 out of 5 stars Gold Standard.......2004-09-16

Before William Flinders Petrie, there were great explorers and great adventurers, some of whom even made finds of tremendous archeological note in Egypt. But Flinders Petrie was the first great archeologist. Analogous to Edward R. Murrow's preeminence to this day as the standard against which all newscasters are measured, Flinders Petrie set the standard and laid the foundations for modern archeology. Today, one can study the science of archeology and obtain a degree. One can specialize in the school of Egyptology. Major universities and museums fund archeological digs. None of this existed when Flinders Petrie first embarked for Cairo in the late 1800's with little more than a bag, homemade tools and instruments, and very little money. How he came to return to Egypt and later Palestine year after year; how the study of Archeology/Egyptology was established at University College; how the theories of dating strata by studying potsherds was developed is fascinating stuff. For anyone who has been captured by the romance of rediscovering lost civilizations, this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Aborbing, intelligent, fascinating.......2001-03-31

Margaret Drower accomplishes a well balanced, informative, authoritative, readable biography of a complex and remarkable individual in this book. Petries achievements are astounding, founding archaeology and egyptology as a professional science, over the course of his career he excavating numerous important and valuable sites, and was prolific in his documentation and publication of his findings, Petrie revolutionised the practice of archaeology, setting a standard of excellence that his juniors and contempories had to follow.

Drower examines his early life and family background to better understand the determined, driven and exacting man he became. Following the development of his methodologies through his seasons in Egypt, Drower also places Petrie in the context of the late nineteenth century academic circles, the friendships and politics which he was surrounded by and participated in.

An absorbing biography, valuable to anyone with an interest in archaeology, egyptology or wishing to learn more about a remarkable individual. A truely worthwhile read.

                        Book Description

There never was, until Flinders applied himself to the task, any deliberately-planned, systematic, persistent exploration of any portion of the Australian coast. The continent grew on the map of the world gradually, slowly, almost accidentally. It emerged out of the unknown, like some vast mythical monster heaving its large shoulders dank and dripping from the unfathomed sea, and metamorphosed by a kiss from the lips of knowledge into a being fair to look upon and rich in kindly favours. It took two centuries and a half for civilised mankind to know Australia, even in form, from the time when it was clearly understood that there was such a country, until at length it was mapped, measured and circumnavigated.

                            Book Description

This is the compelling story of the life and times of Matthew Flinders, the first man to circumnavigate Australia. New features in this updated edition include an increased emphasis on Flinders' early years as he set off for his sea adventures when he was just a teenager. Also described is the explorer's relationship with the other greats of his age, as well as a unique perspective on what life was like aboard a ship in the 19th century. Flinders' inner life is also surveyed, with accounts of early triumphs, a painful exile on an enemy island, and a thwarted love affair.

                                            Book Description

"Though an old man," Thomas Jefferson wrote at Monticello, "I am but a young gardener."

In Gardening in Eden, we enter Arthur T. Vanderbilt's small enchanted world of the garden, where the old wooden trestle tables of a roadside nursery are covered in crazy quilts of spring color, in pansies with crayon-yellow noses and eyes and mouths painted on as if with water colors and india ink; where a catbird comes to eat raisins from one's hand, and a chipmunk demands a daily ration of salted cocktail nuts; where ferns, like cats, leisurely, luxuriously stretch out in the warm spring sun and tulips, luscious as lollipops, dance in one's winter dreams.

Vanderbilt has gardened for over twenty years at his home in northern New Jersey, and in this familiar, small-scale suburban setting he finds the extraordinary and teaches us about the delights, joys, and occasional disappointments of gardening.

In this celebration of life, we journey with the author through the four seasons of the gardening year. We feel the oppressiveness of endless winter days, the magic of an old-fashioned snow day, the heady, healing qualities of wandering through a greenhouse on a frozen February afternoon, the restlessness of a gardener waiting for spring.

We hear the spring peepers down in the swamps around Surprise Lake and play hooky to go to the nursery on a day when a warm breeze is pushing the clouds across the sky.

We experience firsthand the front lines of battle against the enemy gangs gathered at the garden's borders, the winged and stealthy destroyers of plants and flowers. We hear the field crickets and katydids prophesy of summer's end and watch marmalade leaves drift to earth and, later, the skeletal branches of bare trees claw at the twilight sky like the bony arms and grasping fingers of a witch. Together, we share in seasons of trial and error, of creating and maintaining a garden, of great plans laid and gone awry, of crushing defeats and tiny victories and unexpected insights into nature.

With a sense of wonder and humor on each page, Arthur Vanderbilt takes us along with him to discover that for those who wait, watch, and labor in the garden, it's all happening right outside our windows.

This is that rare book on gardening that will carry the gardener through the long winter months and help him or her plan for what to do when the snow melts and the gardening seasons begin again.

2 out of 5 stars Dated writing and an unsatisfying book.......2007-08-03

This book was somewhat interesting, but it was too full of fluff for my taste, and I felt about 20 years too young to connect with the author's point of view. His observations meandered through his (very dated) memories of gardens past, with no conclusions drawn, no linkages to culture, no gardening advice, and so on. While some of the stories were amusing enough, it left me unsatisfied, like eating cotton candy when you are really hungry: a sweet taste but no substance. Unfortunately I can't recommend this one at all.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this little gem.......2007-04-01

This little book did what my husband has been trying to do for years-make me appreciate gardening. Mr. Vanderbilt has written a beautiful, funny book on his love of gardening. His writing style is friendly and conversational-you never feel as though he is trying to talk down to you. I can relate to some of his funny stories of animals invading his garden and he has some fun anecdotes about his goldfish and frog pond, which I enjoyed since we have a pond as well. If you are into gardening, or even if you are not-you will enjoy this fun, well written book.

I love to garden. I can't get enough. But when there's too much sun or too much rain, I usually pass my time reading a good book. Recently, I came upon "Gardening in Eden" by this young author from my own home state. What a pleasure. Get a copy and read it after a long day in your garden. You'll find yourself appreciating your garden 10 times more!

As an amateur gardener myself, Mr. Vanderbilt's book hit home with me. From going to the local nursery to the smell of freshly mowed grass to the lonliness of winter this book expresses the multitude of emotions gardeners experience throughout the year. A very delightful book! This is one book that will be reread by.

I read Arthur T. Vanderbilt's book, "Gardening in Eden" as a nor'easter raged outside, blasting our house with a vile wintry mix, and his book brought inside the wonderfully soothing world of the garden in all seasons. With a roaring fire and a hot cup of tea, it was the perfect way to forget the storm and to remember how much fun it is to work outside. Now, I can't wait to get out there again!

                                                Book Description

What was it like to fly through enemy skies, flak bursting, searchlight beams criss-crossing your route, enemy fighters likely to appear from nowhere? How did it feel to lose friends and colleagues night after night, to watch bombs explode on a target below, to observe destruction spread over a sleeping city? Real stories of war at its most horrific, of mid-air explosions, of crippled planes hurtling to the ground--truly a view of hell on earth.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting Stories of Dicey RAF Bomber Ops!.......2006-10-06

Unlike their American counterparts, the experiences of WWII RAF bomber crewmen haven't been well-chronicled. Mel Rolfe is one author that has worked at filling that gap; LOOKING INTO HELL being his latest book on Bomber Command at war.

The night battles waged by RAF bombers were equally as horrendous and costly as the day missions flown by USAAF crewmen. In one of the 20 stories Rolfe relates in this book -'Stretching Luck to the Limit' - he mentions that 35 crewmen reported to 102 Squadron in March 1941. Seven months later only one(!) was still alive.

Rolfe has a nice writing style. You get to know each member of the crew involved in that particular mission and then follow them as they wing their way into Germany. First-person narratives abound in this book as pilots, air gunners, navigators, etc. relate how their shot-up Wellington struggled home on one engine, how they survived when their Lancaster disintegrated after a mid-air collision and the adventures of a shot-down crew adrift in the North Sea. The reminiscences are exciting, harrowing, and oft times sad as when the sole surviving member of a bomber relates the last flight of his aircraft.

In short, this is a wonderful, poignant tribute to the brave men of Bomber Command.
