Book Description
Azospirillum is a plant growth promoting rhizobacterium used for inoculation of cereal and forage crops. The book covers its physiology, ecology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. The most advanced molecular techniques to understand the regulatory mechanisms of nitrogen fixation and ammonia assimilation, as well as the basis of phytohormone production, are included. In particular, the identification of novel types of promoters, specific regulatory circuits, and new regulatory proteins is described. New insights in the plant growth promoting role of the bacteria through the analysis of their interactions with the plant are presented. Also discussed are field applications, allowing the evaluation of the physiological and agronomic involvement of Azospirillum inoculations.

Authors include Tim Parks, Patricia Hampl, Mary Taylor Simeti, Luigi Barzini, Gary Paul Nabhan, and many others. “Travel writing at its glorious best.” — Chicago Tribune
Customer Reviews:
Experience Italy all Over Again.......2005-10-30
Having just returned from my first trip to Italy a few months ago, I'm still reliving the memories and soaking up information about the people and places in this enthralling country. Although you can't "get beneath the surface" and truly understand the culture during a 2-week bus tour, my armchair traveling since returning has deepened the experience for me and made me eager to return.
The essays in Travelers' Tales allowed me to validate my own experiences and learn about others experiences and impressions of Italy. From interesting, educational and insightful to downright hilarious, I enjoyed every one of the essays. The difficulties of banking and understanding the tax laws, the challenges of traffic, the misconceptions about people in southern Italy, appreciating the churches, artwork and food of Italy are topics revealed by the various contributing authors.
I highly recommend this collection to anyone who has traveled to Italy, is contemplating a trip to Italy, or will never get any further than armchair traveling. There's something for everyone in Travelers'Tales.
Still interesting.......2005-03-23
Having travelled to Italy so many times, I found that some stories in this book are accurate. I do not agree with the other review, this book is not that bad at all. I agree that there are some stories that are boring, but that's what we see when we have different writers in one book and some are just fantastic. I really enjoy this book and I'm glad I bought it to accompany me during a travel to Spain with my Italian friend, so I asked him a lot of questions about the stories while we were on the road. And that's very entertaining!
Free spirits in travel..........2004-10-15
Some folks take themselves too seriously..but enough of those reviewers. I think of these stories as little after-dinner treats. Something to savor after a long day dealing with the real world, knowing in these days of a bad economy and terrorism and jobliness, my chances of getting to Italy are slim. I enjoy the vicarious experience of savoring these adventures-travels in a country that I was never born into, but yearn for all the same.
Silly, offensive, and patronizing.......2003-09-02
In the introduction we are regaled to a reminder of the stereotype of the Italian gangster or buffoon. There is a story about a casual sexual encounter that seems entirely out of place in this day of AIDS. Italian men are portrayed as habitually unfaithful to their wives ("The Italian Mistress"). There are excerpts that characterize the "average Italian citizen" as an inveterate cheater. Italians, we are told, are breast-obsessed. This book is a paradigm of the sort of travel writing that romanticizes the exotic "other." I see no reason to think that this brings anyone closer to the "real" Italy and it is silly and simplistic to think otherwise. It would appear that in these days of political correctness it is still considered acceptable to portray Italians in a patronizing way, in contrast with almost every other group or ethnicity. This book is insulting both to Italians and to the reader's intelligence.
Another great Traveler's Tales.......2001-10-27
This book, like all of the Traveler's Tales books, is the product of thoughtful editing. Here are stories of real people in Italy. And each one seeks to show the beauty and complexity of the place. These are not just the stock images here. These are beautiful, sometimes intense stories about a place that, for so many, is out of reach. This book is a journey. Good, Bad, Ugly and perfect, flaws and all. Read it, enjoy and then, go.
Book Description
These essays by renowned travel writers explore the many lures of Tuscany — its rolling hills, sunny climate, friendly people, and superb food and wine. This extraordinary region comes alive in tales of harvesting grapes, hunting for truffles, hiking ancient Etruscan paths, and glorying in the region’s bountiful art, music, history, and above all, romance. Some of the writers have made Tuscany their home, others came to vacation or study. But the spell of the region pervades all of these accounts. Authors include Frances Mayes, Matthew Spender, Jan Morris, Ferenc Mate, and Barbara Grizzuti Harrison, among others.
Customer Reviews:
Tuscany is great! This book is a bore........2006-01-12
Well, at least most of the book is boring. The idea is nice, but how much fun can you derive from reading about piazzas, pizzas, macaronis and great views. Pasta is to eat, wine to drink and people - to meet. Reading about them is so much less fun. So if you want to read about Tuscany before going there - take a travel guide or history book. This one - if you can't fall asleep.
Compliment Your Trip with Stories.......2002-07-29
I'd pick a story each night relating to what I was doing during my stay in Tuscany and found it the perfect way to fall into a wishful sleep. I read about buying a villa, shopping in the open market, and walking from village to village. I've never used a travel book like this to compliment my trip but found it extremely enjoyable since I was staying at the same villa for a few weeks. If you are thinking about going to Tuscany, this story book can certainly help you get there. The stories are well written as well as being interesting and fun.
Almost as good as a summer in Tuscany.......2002-04-25
This book is the next best thing to being there--beautiful writing about a beautiful place. Anyone who loves good food, good wine, and good writing will not be disappointed by Travelers' Tales Tuscany. It's a wonderful collection of experiences and insights into the region--and a lot cheaper than the plane ticket! If you can't go to Tuscany this summer, at least buy yourself this book.

Getting Yours: The Complete Guide to Govt. Money.......2003-06-03
This book might be a lot more helpful if it were updated regularly. The current--third--edition is from 1986, which is ludicrous with subject matter this volatile. The content itself is a bit too brief, but would still be very helpful if it had been done some time in the last 1-5 years.

Great Historical Addition To Any Outdoorsman's Collection.......1999-08-04
I purchased Mr. Thiel's book some time ago (December 1994), but have very fond memories of the frequent times that I have read its pages. The content of the book weaves masterfully through historical context coupled with an easy to read style of story-telling narrative. Mr. Thiel's research on the timber wolf in America's Dairyland is impeccable. The manuscript guides the reader from the wolves beginnings in the State and subsequent extinction, to the modern day re-introduction of "canis lupus" to the Northwoods. Having lived in Wisconsin for a portion of my lifetime (and anxious to return!), this was a must read. However, it is not only a book for Wisconsinites, but a well spun chronicle for all ages, and folks from every State in the Union who take an interest in the majestic wolf!

Book Description
In the fifty years since his death in 1957 Humphrey Bogart has firmly established his position as one of the iconic figures in the history of cinema, a star of the same magnitude as Monroe, Gable or Chaplin, and the personaification of one of Hollywood's most enduring genres, film noir. In this lavishly illsutrated survey of Bogart's life and work, Richard Schickel assesses his career and enduring legacy while George Perry provides a detailed review of the films he made over three decades, with a particular focus on his key roles. Published with the authorization of the Estate of Humphrey Bogart, this official celebration is a fitting tribute to a much-loved star.
Having started out playing a series of supporting roles and "B" movie leads in routine gangster films, Bogart first emerged as a figure to be reckoned with in High Sierra before starring as the private eye Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon in 1941. Then, two years later, came Casablanca, the film in which, for the first time, he was allowed to show the humanity that lay behind the mask of the laconic, wisecracking tough guy. A humanity that was fully realized in the part of Charlie Allnut in The African Queen for which he won an Oscar in 1952.
In all, Bogart appeared in over seventy-five films, and consistently lived up to his own definition of stardom -- "you have to drag your weight at the box office and be recognized wherever you go" -- and was later adopted as a cult figure by a new generation of fans, who saw him as an existentialist hero. Five decades after his death, he remains an invigorating presence in our imaginations.
While Bogart's magnetism is to this day unmatched on screen, his private life was equally entrancing. He had already been married three times when he met Lauren Bacall on the set of Passage to Marseille and told her, "I saw your test. We're going to have a lot of fun together." She provided a much-needed stabilizing influence to his life and together they formed one of the most celebrated on- and off-screen couples. They had a son and daughter and appeared together in four movies including Key Largo and The Big Sleep.
On the night Bogart won his Oscar for The African Queen, Bacall reflected that "Bogie had everything now-- a happy marriage, a son, another child on the way, an ocean racing yacht [the legendary Santana], success, and the peak of recognition in his work."

Back to basics on Bogart..........2007-04-10
In addition to excellent photos covering Humphrey's life and career, this volume has a concise biography, an insightful appreciation of his acting, and details on all of his nearly 80 films and his dozen or so appearances on the Broadway stage. For casual fans, it is a must-read, and for fanatic fans a must-own. Good job from the creators and publishers, it would make a fine gift for any Bogie-lover one knows.

Amazing images no matter if you are a huge fan or not.......2004-05-06
There are amazing photos in here with Bogie and Bogie and other stars.
I am no huge Bogie fan but am glad I got a copy of this book. Big fans will love it even more. Crystal clear portraits. Plenty not just the same old same old.
Sepia, true b&w, the ones with blue tone, etc. All done in their original tones. All glossy pages. Neat stuff. Not all full page images, but definately worth at least $10 shipped or so to own.
If Ever You Were a Fan.......2001-02-26
The book has amazing photogragh's of Humphrey Bogart. The pictures give you a glimpse into his life. The photograpghy is outstanding. The series of pictures with Lauren Bacall were breath taking. You were able to feel the love and chemistry between the two through the photos. The book also has amusing and interesting commentary on Bogie's professional and personal life. The book transports you to another era. It is remarkable and fabulously put together. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys classic photography, and (or) Bogie.
