Read the book, then go and visit the country. It is Slovakia in a nutshell. It's beauty, its people,it,s history. The illustrations are colorful and charming. I recomment the book for social studies in schools.

It is ok for a child's book. For $31 I did not expect a child's book with approx 60 pages. I thought it would be a regular adult book with 300 or so pages

5 out of 5 stars A paen to all things Slovak.......2001-11-03

This beautifully illustrated, colorful, hardback book opens with the Slovak anthem ("Nad Tatrou") and closes with a "Prayer for Slovakia;" all points inbetween sing a beautiful paen to Slovakia. If you're looking for a Christmas gift for a Slovak relative, look no further. Published (separately) in both English and Slovak editions by Bolchazy-Carducci publishers, this picture/fact book provides a general overview of the country with its rich cultural traditions. Probably originally intended for juvenile and young adult readers, this book is a treasure trove for everyone, though, with its high-quality illustrations of all things Slovak. Places like Bratislava and Kosice...Slovak forefathers (including a nice mix of politicians, writers, musicians). There is a 2-page simplified map of "places of interest in Slovakia" that features places like castles, famous cathedrals and the Tatra mountains. Devin Castle gets 3-pages devoted to it (perhaps a bit excessive), followed by a brightly illustrated 2-page map of the High Tatras--"our miniature Alps." Next comes a section of "Slovak superlatives" (or little-known facts) pointed out with bullets. Facts like the biggest fish in Slovakia (the sheat-fish), the smallest mammal (the lesser shrew)...There is a colorful tribute to Janosik and his band of outlaws and then much space is devoted to depictions of various Slovak artwork--leatherwork, embroidery, wooden products...old Easter and Christmas customs are covered in delightful detail and if you've been puzzled by the values of Slovak currency, perplex-no-more because its' thorough lesson on Slovak money should take care of that once and for all. A 3-page spread which recants Slovakia's historical journey to independence is a valuable, concise recap and a good refresher for everyone. The book fittingly closes with Milan Rufus' "Prayer for Slovakia."

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting introduction to the gateway country.......1999-02-05

Olga Drobna and company do a masterful of displaying the beauty and tragedy of Slovakian histroy. The heartfelt writing and graceful illustrations entice the reader to empathize with the beleagured little country. The translation from Slavic to English only marginally disrupts the serene nature of the book.

A good friend of mine recommended this book to me with much praise. So I found it on amazon used section listed for $0.01, which came out to about $4 with shipping. You might be thinking who cares how much I was able to pick this book up for.. THIS BOOK IS WORTH MUCH MUCH MORE! If everything in these pages are considered and used, there is not a price that can be put on it.

Life would be so much easier if all the knowledge and principles in these pages where second nature at an early age. The good news is that you are here now reading the reviews and likely to pick this book up like I did and buy it.

Out of all the books I have read all my life this is definitely in the top ten. If you think the bible is important to read, I would put this one right beside it if not in a more accessible place.

Anthony does a terrific job organizing his writing and making his concepts clear and understandable. There are many guidelines, rules, and strategies that can help you improve your life and ready you for what is to come next in your life.

People pay ridiculous amounts of money to find the secret success formula for this or that or the next thing.. and its all here for the taking.. Heck, its likely at the library for nothing. But this book is like a bible for life. A bible for the mind and the way to do and achieve.

Keep in mind that no book is going to kick you in the [...] every day to make decisions and take action, you need a wife or a mentor for that :)
This is however is a fantastic place to start. You will be glad you did!

Tony Robbins has good advice. In fact when one of my employees moves into a supervisor or sales role I give them a copy of one of his books. And I credit his motivational books with some of my financial success. However he misses one point that all motivational speakers miss: no not everyone succeed no matter how much you pump them up. Some people lack the basic skills. For example to suceed in a given business you need motivation but you also need
                1. Experience in that industry, extensive experience.
                2. An innovative idea.
                3. Working capital.

If you lack one or more of these then all the motivation in the world won't help you.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Its Kind.......2007-07-03

Quite possibly the most important book I have ever read. Robbins touches on every element necessary for success, no matter how you as an individual define success. Unlike the Robert Greene books (don't get me wrong, I love those, too!), Robbins actually delves into morals and ethics rather than trying to remove them from the equation. This was key for me, as I don't think I could stomach some of the tactics advised by Greene. Knowing how far you're willing to go (and the price you're willing to pay to get there) is paramount, and Robbins examines this in great detail.

                5 out of 5 stars Important, well-done, and inspirational.......2007-04-30

I read this book originally years ago. I owned a bookstore at the time, and it kept falling off the bookshelf, so the last time I picked it up to put it back, I got the message and decided I should read it.

I had become a Hypnotherapist right about that time, and I was very interested in NLP, an associated therapeutic tool. I had read a couple of NLP books by the formulators of that work, and honestly, I wasn't really impressed with the presentation of the concepts.

When I read Tony's book which is very much about applied NLP, I found it one of the "meatiest" self-help books I had ever read, as well as one of the most motivational. I had yellow pieces of paper stuck in every 5 pages or so, and it was so highlighted that it was hard to separate the highlights from the plain text. I devoured that book.

Tony's message is one I fully embrace today. I believe deeply in the limitlessness of the human mind and spirit, which ultimately is this book's message.

If you are in a helping profession, or you want to be, or if you life is simply not working, please consider reading this book. If you open your mind to the possibility that you can have whatever you want or become the person you want to be, then reading this book, will propel you on that journey.

                5 out of 5 stars A True Inspiration! .......2007-02-25

This book has truly inspired me and has allowed me to see things in a whole new light. I was given a copy of this book to read 4 months ago and it has truly changed my entire thinking pattern. I no longer have a grim outlook on life. I find myself living my life more joyously and realizing the potential I have within and I truly thank this book along with Neale Donald Walsch's Conversation with God - Book 1, for allowing me to see things from a totally different perspective. This book is an excellent follow-up to Walsch's Conversations with God - Book 1 and I truly recommend this book!

                        Book Description

Here is the story of Hanover Shoe Farms, truly one of the great breeding farms of the world. Hanover began breeding horses before Lindbergh flew the Atlantic, before the first Hambletonian was run, and before Al Jolson starred in the first talking motion picture.

Through the years, Hanover-bred horses have earned about $400 million and the offspring of its stallions over the years total nearly $1 billion. The Hanover story is about the people who made the farm great and those who continue the tradition of excellence. It is about the great broodmares and stallions that produced some of the best horses the harness racing world has seen. It is about the vision and work of the Hanover team as they embark on a new century.

I liked reading this (though I didn't finish it--as I lost interest half way through) because it took me to a time when people had to write letters. Sir John Gielgud was a famous ACTOR...especially on the London State initially...and it's amazing to read about all of the other actors, friends and family that crossed his paths. It's a reminder that over time...a Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie will be nothing but a distant memory and no one in 100 years will really know of them as readily as they do today. Thank God for books...they take us back to another time...and I do want to go back and finish this book ONE DAY...it's just that a better book came along. I nned to stop myself from getting sidetracked. :(

3 out of 5 stars To Be or Not to Be? Find out about John Gielgud through his letters.......2005-09-08

Sir John Gielgud was born in the reign of Edward in 1904 dying
in 2000 with fame, fortune and a reputation as a great classical
                              actor as his legacy.
The book is a collection of his letters from from his youth
through the rest of his Methuselah long lifetime. Gieguld was
complex with many aspects to his character.
Gielgud was a superb actor of such great Shakespearean roles
as Hamlet, Romeo and Richard III. In later years he was noted for cameos in films (some of the movies were horrid!) winning a
best supporting actor Oscar for his turn in "Arthur" with Dudly
Moore. Along with such British acting legends as Olivier, Guiness, Olivier and Peggy Ashcroft he has brought culture to
millions. His resonant and musical voice will live as long as
there is recorded sound. No wonder a theatre in London has been
named "The Gielgud Theatre." No wonder he was knighted in 1953.
No wonder the many books he wrote have been bestsellers. He was
witty and well traveled. I was tired after learning of all the
climes, times and theatres upon whose boards this seven league
booted vagabond traveled in his long career (He came from the
great Terry acting family and was a born actor!).
Sir John was openly gay. He had a succession of male lovers
throughout his life. In 1953 he was briefly arrrested for solicitation in a public place causing a minor scandal.
Gielgud was prickly and often condescending to folks from the
provinces. He was wont to make snide remarks about Jews and people of color. He was a narcissist who worship himself and his
career though he was at the same time a good and loyal friend.
While at times catty and meanspirited he could also be generous
                              to others.
I find Gielgud to be a better actor than a man. This book will be boring to anyone not familiar with the actors of an earlier time. It is revealing of a person a theatre/film buff should be
acquainted with in an understanding of 20th century things thespian.

I think letters make the best autobiographies. By definition, letters by the subject are first-hand. They are convenient, because they are also by nature episodic, which means you can put them down and pick them up when the mood strikes. And John Gielgud's letters certainly prove wrong those who say he never wrote an autobiogrsphy. (As the Washington Post reviewer says here, he must have written two letters to different people every day of his life.)

So, here's not just a life ideally presented, but a life worth knowing about, since Gielgud was one of the three or four greatest English-speaking actors of the twentieth century.

Also, we have the experience of Gielgud's films, which flesh out for us this man of letters (literally and figuratively, since Gielgud was the first actor to receive an honorary doctorate from Oxford.) As was also pointed out in the Post review, Gielgud was not just a great actor but a gifted writer, so we have the treat of beautiful prose, rendered in the service of a rich history: this man knew and had opinions about almost everything and everyone that mattered in the performing arts, especially the stage and screen.

Through thess letters, we also end up knowing something about the luminaries of the world Gielgud inhabited and moved about in with complete ease. Gielgud writes conversationally, candidly and competently to and about people we only dream of knowing - Shaw, Coward, Gish, Lunt and Fontaine, Olivier and Leigh, Selznick, Richardson, Guinness, Stravinsky, Brando.... Amazing! And in such a natural, unassuming way that there's not even a hint of name dropping or self-promotion, which is so tiresome in today's celebrity interviews and memoirs.

Here is a great actor, director, producer and impresario, who takes his work seriously and has a glorious time doing it, who loves and is loved and who lives into his 90s. If only everyone could be so lucky. On second thought, it wasn't just luck...

One quibble: The picture selection is very poor. If one didn't know better, they might think that Gielgud was born middle-aged. But this is Gielgud's book, and kudos to John Mangan, whose enormous work of collecting, collating and editing has made it so.

What we have here is probably the definitive biography (at least thus far) of one of the greatest actors of the 20th century who, unlike others of comparable talent and stature (e.g. Olivier) was also a thoroughly decent person. I consider it ironic and (yes) unfair that Gielgud is best-known for his role in the movie, Arthur. What if he had made no movies at all? Would anyone write a 580-page biography of him? Even in that event, would anyone read it, much less review it? The subtitle is especially apt, given Gielgud's comment "My work is my life [italics] and I have no other interests." Of course that is somewhat (but not much) of an overstatement by someone who, on or off the stage or screen, was so essentially theatrical. Croall guides his reader through the length of Gielgud's career, focusing almost entirely on him rather than, for example, correlating biographical information within a narrative about the society and the performing arts in which Gielgud was so involved.

Croall necessarily discusses Gielgud's homosexuality and does so with intelligence and sensitivity. This dimension of his private life is of interest to me, frankly, only insofar as it helps me to gain a better understanding and appreciation of an actor so compelling on stage or screen. It remains for Croall and others better qualified than I am to suggest to what extent Gielgud's homosexuality guided and nourished his talent.

Of all that Croall reveals about Gielgud, the qualities I found most appealing are his kindness, generosity, and moral courage. There are dozens of examples of each. I was also amazed to learn the nature and extent of his career which began in 1921 and continued almost until his death in 2000 at the age of 96. Croall interviewed more than 100 of those who knew Gielgud best. It is worth noting that most of his co-workers were among his closest and most devoted personal friends. True to character, he endured criticism and betrayal by others with uncommon style and grace. Even after his beloved companion John Perry left him for the producer Binkie Beaumont, for example, Gielgud continued to assist Perry's career, directing and acting in plays he had written. In comparable circumstances, few others would have been so forgiving, much less so supportive. Gielgud's life does indeed illustrate both theatricality and humanity of the very highest quality.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive Gielgud.......2002-04-24

This is unquestionably the best study of Gielgud's life ever written, and should surely rank among the finest theatrical memoirs. Croall uses Gielgud's homosexuality (including his 1953 arrest for solicitatio) and his life-long rivalry with Laurence Olivier to spin a fascinating dramatic web, while at the same time providing intriguing insight into not only Gielgud's life and work, but of the evolution of English theater in the twentieth century.

What I appreciated most about Croall's book was that he doesn't accept much of the Gielgud legend at face value, but looks at it logically and sometimes ponders the accuracy of many famous stories. The most stunning example of this is the famous swapping of the roles of Romeo and Mercutio by Olivier and Gielgud in the famous New Theater production of 1936. Legend has it that this swap was intended as a way of showing off the King of Shakespearean Tragedy (Gielgud) and the Heir Apparent (Olivier). Croall points out that this is probably hindsight talking: that in fact Olivier had no significant classical experience at that point in his career, and that the swap was probably intended by Gielgud and producer Binkie Beaumont as a means of insuring the production against failure if Olivier's reviews were poor (they were). The narrative is studded with such interesting and well-thought theorizing, while at the same time laying out Gielgud's life with intricate and accurate detail.

Croall paints Olivier as a fascinating antagonist in the narrative, but he also provides so many interesting details of Gielgud's professional and personal life that the reader finishes the book feeling that he has lived one of the most distinguished theatrical lives in history along with the book's topic. Croall's work is a fascinating study of a fascinating man.

Gielgud is a huge, long loaded with information about the work of John Gielgud. It is the sort of book you can open to any page and find some fascinating tidbit. But that is not enough....
The book is disappointing. It has some fine annectdotes but provides little insight into Gielgud's art or theater in general. Also Gielgud's personal life is treated superficially.
This adds up to a book that is dull to read for longer than 5 minutes at a stretch. This is a terrific book for bathroom reading but a lousy book for really reading.

5 out of 5 stars 4.6 stars: A silver trumpet muffled in silk.......2001-08-11

A formidably well-researched monument of a book, which captures the elegance and eloquence of one of the 20th century's most illustrious actors -- indefatigably immersed in his craft, witty and sometimes tactless, unfailingly generous.

Gielgud's early career was, of course, spent on the stage; he balked at making films with any regularity until he was about 50 years old. His performance of "Hamlet" at the Old Vic is legendary, and he was justly lionized. We learn more than we ever knew about some of the figures in those early days: Mrs Patrick Campbell, Edith Evans, Sybil Thorndike, Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies. Of course, the legacy of his mother's side of the family, the Terrys, was continued in Sir John (his great-aunt Ellen Terry was the actress of her age, & recipient of many tributes from, among others, Oscar Wilde). We learn that the family name "Gielgud" is Polish, and was originally "Gielgaudski."

There is the expected contrasting of Sir John with Laurence, Lord Olivier; and in Croall's book, Olivier does not come off very well, intensely competitive to the point of being resentful, brash to the point of arrogance.

We learn of Gielgud as director for many stage productions, and the ideas that bubbled forth from him with an ebullient profusion that proved vexing to many actors, bewildered by many changes suggested and usually retracted; but none (or very few) of the actors who worked with him in this capacity doubted his good intentions, or his dedication.

We learn of Gielgud's arrest in 1953, shortly after his knighthood, for "the importuning of male persons for immoral purposes." We need not be ardently progressive to deplore the atmosphere in England and elsewhere during that time; and we cannot help but admire the grace & the humility with which Gielgud, supported by many friends in the theatre, handled the distressing episode.

We learn of Gielgud's frequent collaborations with Sir Ralph Richardson, a partnership that lasted until Richardson's death in 1983, and encompassed material from Shakespeare to Harold Pinter; we see Gielgud working with Alec Guinness and Richard Burton in the early stages of both men's careers; we are witness to the Gielgud/Burton collaboration on a production of "Hamlet," Burton as Hamlet and Gielgud as director, and the almost uncritical admiration that the younger man had for the older.

We learn of Gielgud's innumerable -- mostly unmalicious -- conversational gaffes, usually generated by his forgetting who was in the room or who he was talking to. Sir John became known as "the London Brick Factory" for dropping so many conversational "bricks." Once when dining with a friend named Eddie Knoblock, Sir John was spotted by someone in another part of the restaurant; this "someone" waved hello, and sat down. Gielgud turned to his dining companion and said, "Thank God he didn't join us; he's a bigger bore than Eddie Knoblock."

Mostly, we are reminded of John Gielgud's formidable accomplishments in Shakespeare, and his fluency in speaking verse. It was Alec Guinness who described Gielgud's voice as "a silver trumpet muffled in silk."

The first three-fifths of Jonathan Croall's biography deal with the first 40 or 45 years of Gielgud's life; many of the actors mentioned have since faded from prominence or from memory, as have a few of the plays. Whereas John Simon in his New York Times review says that Croall's book is perfectly proportioned, this reader was eager to get to the 1950's and beyond, when Gielgud played in films both good and bad ("Arthur" and "Providence" among the good; "Scandalous" and "Caligula" among the bad), always imbuing the role at hand with a seemingly effortless elegance. Characteristically, Gielgud spent his ninety-sixth and last birthday working. It was indeed a life immersed in acting, if not precisely "a theatrical life." And for all the accomplishments and justly rendered honours (including the Gielgud Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue), Arthur John Gielgud played his part with grace & an admirable humility.
