Customer Reviews:
the operative word is lonely..........2003-01-12
I am usually a fan of Lonely Planet, but having just returned from Grand Bahama, I would not recommend this guide. Published in 2001, which means it was researched before that, it is quite out of date given the tough post 9/11 economy. Examples: Running Mon Resort- closed. Hydroflora gardens- closed. Rand Nature Center- closed. Many retailers- closed, moved, renamed, etc. Restaurant prices - way out of date.
Some of this is just irritating, but some is more dangerous- eg. LP suggests that, to get to Water Cay you drive the 'dirt road' to the 'north dock' and hire a boat from a local. Do it their way, and you may be a lot lonelier than you bargained for: That dirt road takes 45 minutes on a rutted logging road, lots of forks, no signs, and there is no dock- just a narrow ramp and a couple abandoned cars. High tide there swamps a good 2-300 yards of the shoreline. Time to do a new edition, guys!
I thought the maps provided were inadequate. For some reason, LP takes the trouble to make a map of Downtown Freeport with some of the restaurants (including a Burger King!?!) and attractions located and numbered, but they don't put the map number with the review! Add that to the Bahamian's indifference to street address numbers, street signs.
Conclusion: Not up to LP's usual standards. Though useful for background information, be prepared to check everything by phone or on the web before you depart. Or skip the guide and start with the web...
I liked this book.......2001-03-02
This is one of the best travel guides that I have read. I thought the political information about the Bahamas was really interesting. Just the level of detail--which is probably too much if you're just cruising to Nassau--but it really explains a lot about why things are the way they are in the Bahamas. I dont really use the Lonely Planet guides while on vacation because you dont need that much information. However they really help a lot when you are reasearching a destination.
Five Stars??? Well, I don't know about that........1999-09-18
Found the book useful as a starting point. Complete, thorough. Interesting tidbits. But when it came down to actually scheduling trips and tickets, I found out that most of the information was already out of date.
BahamasAir wasn't familiar with the AirPass, so I had to fax them the section where the author cattily railed on them. All they had to say was "interesting."
The suggested weekend and week trips were a little sketchy as well. In fact, when I had acutally arrived, I never used the book because of the terrific tourist infrastructure already in place.
Overall, I felt the author was a little harsh on his take with Bahamian culture, keeping a good sense of humor but almost crossing the line of offensive in some places.
People should remember that these tour books are a subjective peephole into their place of destination, and should always keep an open mind to discover for themselves.
I had a great time there.
Budget, coverage basic, but gives days, times-real use info........1999-06-08
Excellent maps. More budget minded then most guide books. Gives actual prices for hotels, not just $ signs. Easy to read, and honest evaluations. Gives ideas of ways to cut costs. Full coverage of all islands, including out islands. Complement with one other guide and you'll be complete. Site coverages basic, but real use information such as days, times, how to get there.
Great! A truly in-depth guide.......1999-06-06
This guide actually covers the out islands of the Bahamas with detailed coverage. The guide has most every place in the Bahamas covered down to the grains of the sandy beaches.

SO CLOSE TO YOUR.......2004-01-24
This book was one of the best that I've read thus far. The author told her story about the love she have for her mother and how she struggle with the thought of lossing her.Not only that but the author stated how her family became distant during her trying times. I feel so many people hid the fact that family actually become distant. I pray that God touches this author book, because so many of us feel the pain as we lose or have lost a love one.

LOVELY.......2005-09-21
What a gorgeous little book. All the rose lovers I know are getting one for Christmas this year. I first discovered it at an exclusive gift shop in a high-end mall, but resisted the urge to purchase, assuming it would cost far less at Amazon. I was right. Almost everyone who sits on my couch instinctively picks up the book and looks through it. Quick hits of all things rose (poems, lyrics, stories).

Customer Reviews:
Maggie's Review.......2005-05-18
In the Land of the Big Red Apple is adventurous and suspenseful. Rose and her Mama and Papa moved to Missouri and left her Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Mary, Aunt Carry, and Aunt Grace in De Smet because of a drought. Rose's best friend was Alva. Alva hated town girls. Rose's Papa had a hired hand. His name was Abe. Abe lived in a rented shack with his little brother Swiny. Abe and Swiny's mother and father had died. They met Abe when Papa caught Swiny stealing some of Mama's eggs. The next morning Abe came by to apologize. Then they harvested the last harvest. Then Mama and Rose baked and cooked for Thanksgiving. They invited the Coolys over for supper. The last thing Mama put on their plates was three kernels of corn to remind them of the Pilgrims. Then they said grace. After they ate Rose told Paul and George about a cave, but she wasn't allowed to go in it. Paul said, "They wouldn't know if we do so let's go." They went inside the cave and got really muddy. They got in big trouble when they got back. It was time to go back to school. Rose saw Blanche, her school friend. Rose's Papa came and picked Rose up from school. Papa said, "Why Rose you're lips are blue and you're shivering." When Rose got home he said, "Go sit by the fire." Soon it was Rose's birthday! Mama kept looking out the window but wouldn't let Rose. When it was time for chores her Mama wouldn't let her do her chores. When Papa came inside he said, "Go outside and have a look." There was a donkey outside with a new saddle! A little while after Rose's birthday was a terrible ice storm! It was hard getting around. You had to put cloth on your shoes. Their orchard barely made it. Abe was sparking with Effie, Alva's older sitter. Then Abe asked Effie if she would marry him. Will Effie marry Abe? I recommend this book, because it shows you what it was like when Rose was a little girl compared to now.
I love it!.......2004-01-12
In the Land of the Big Red Apple is a GREAT book! Rose begins to adjust to her new home in Missouri at Rocky Ridge Farm. She gets a new donkey named Spookendyke for her ninth birthday, a huge ice storm hits, she gets to celebrate her first real Christmas in the Ozarks, and her parents bulid a new house.
I have the whole series..........2003-05-16
I love THE LAURA INGALLS YEARS and the ROSE YEARS. In the later ROSE books, Rose is a little more fiesty and romantical...it builds up as the series goes along, so this is more for pre-teens and teens later on. Otherwise it is very wholesome and fun; Rose is interesting, and has many ideas about the world! I have all the LAURA YEARS books except THE FIRST FOUR YEARS and all the ROSE books except ON THE BANKS OF THE BAYOU (my fave) and BACHELOR GIRL (haven't read that yet).
...
I found this series to be very disappointing..........2002-12-31
I found this entire series of books to be disappointing. The writing was average but what really bothered me most is how the stories lacked the sweet innocence of the original series. On doing some research I discovered that parts of the books were based on Rose's diaries. Unfortunately, she was not a happy soul and these books suffer from her same pessimism. The listed author for this book (MacBride) died before the last few books were published. The books were still published under his name and HarperCollins claimed that he wrote the manuscript before dying yet one of the last books in this series contains several chapters (almost verbatim) from a story that Rose wrote herself for an adult audience. The story is totally out of character with the series. Rose and her friend sneak out for several nights to meet a traveling salesman. He eventually makes a pass at her...
This series is okay as light reading for adolescents but if you are looking for a piece of americana, and/or a wholesome book for your child or self this is not the best choice. It grossly fails to live up to the original series of books. The Caroline series is a better choice.
Rose is cool.......2002-09-10
The girl was quite a firecracker. Again, just as charming as Little House, but the storytelling is a bit more complex and more reflective of who Rose was. This series truly equals the charm and storytelling of Laura's story. Kudos to those who thought to bring this series to print.

The tale of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, one of Britain's finest comedy double-acts, is told from Moore's perspective. Following his Oscar nomination for
Arthur, Moore returns home to appear on a primetime chat show. Through flashbacks and sketches, the tale of the volatile comedy team is told.
Customer Reviews:
Geniuses At Work.......2006-06-25
Peter Cook and Dudley Moore were comic geniuses. There's no way around that. The brilliant writing and spot-on performances were nearly always absolutely hysterical. Cook, the Writer, was unmatched. Cook, the Actor, perhaps less so, but his deadpan approach (vocally as well as facially) was always a perfect counterpart for Dudley Moore's animated delivery. The ad libbing between these two was always wonderful to experience.
My only disapppointment with this CD is that it isn't twice as long. A two- or three-CD set would still only have scratched the surface. But what's there is "cherce."
Sadly, of course, neither man is still with us, but thanks to this album -- as well as a handful of things on video (though more of the latter should be made available in NTSC for Americans to appreciate)-- will help preserve what they did.

Classic Routines from Cook & Moore.......2000-09-28
Finally, these wondrous routines from the alter-egos of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore are available in one delightful package. Those expecting the expletive-laden scatalogy of their DEREK & CLIVE dialogues will be disappointed, as the characters here are far more whimsical and wholesome. These routines detail the relationship of Pete and Dud, two cloth-capped proletarians from Dagenham, who muse and amuse about life, religion, sex, art, music and relationships in exaggerated cockney accents. Cook's amazing ability to generate spiralling nonsense out of the mundane suggests Samuel Beckett on laughing gas. Moore generally falls upon mad reminscences of his youth, but his cloying earnestness is kept in check by Pete's volcanic imagination and deadpan insults. Cook is a master at leading Moore will o' the wisp into heights of dazzling absurdity. All of these bits are better seen/heard than read, but "Art Gallery" is a howling masterpiece of half-digested art criticism. Pete admires Vernon Ward's duck paintings because the ducks' eyes follow him around the room. Dud points out that the ducks are flying sideways, and that only one eye is visible per duck. This doesn't faze Pete: "You get the impression, Dud, that their eyes are craning round the beak to look at you." "Dud's Dream" builds up to a hilarous climax in which Pete restages Dud's birth by sticking him in a wardrobe (closet), after which Dud becomes convinced his mother and the closet are one and the same. The only gripe I have is that their very first routine ("A Spot of the Usual Trouble," in which Pete and Dud recount being hit-on by sexy 1950s film stars like "bloody Greta Garbo") is not included. Nevertheless, one of the few substantial collections of a phenomenal, and almost forgotten, comedy team. A must for fans of British comedy, and a perfect companion piece to THE COMPLETE BEYOND THE FRINGE. I got my copy from A Common Reader.

Book Description
This study analyzes the readiness of the British military establishment for war in 1899 and its performance in the South African War (1899-1902). It focuses on the career of Field Marshal Paul Sanford, 3rd Baron Methuen, whose traditional military training, used so effectively in Queen Victoria's small wars, was put to the test by the modern challenges of the South African War. A subsidiary aim of this work is to correct and refine the historical consensus that Methuen's campaing in the South African War was plagued by practical errors and poor judgement. The South African War was a crucial transitional episode in the history of the British army. Unlike Great Britain's other expeditions, it required the concentrated resources of the entire empire. It was a modern war in the sense that it employed the technology, the weaponry, the communications, and the transportation of the second industrial revolution.
Through detailed analyses of Methuen's campaigns, this study demonstrates that both Methuen and theBritish Army were not prepared for modern warfare. Despite this, Methuen and the British officer class were able to make the necessary transition to defeat the Boers and propel the British army into the twentieth century.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating account of pre-modern British Military.......2000-03-01
A credible and fascinating account of Great Britain moving into the 20th century. Miller excels in portraying a critical cusp in British military history. Are the technological paradigm shifts, and calming prosperity of Great Britain in the late 19th Century, so much different than the new world milieu facing the US moving into the 21st? The immediacy of the past is why I love history. Although young at the time of publication, clarity of writing indicates touches of genius; one can easily see a "David" emaniting from this intelligent writer.
