Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive survey of Russia's tragic and glorious history from prehistory through glasnost and the fall of the Soviet Union right up to the present day. The book begins with prehistoric Russia and its nomadic invaders, and covers the rise of Muscovy with its colorful panoply of rulers from Ivan Moneybags to Ivan the Terrible, despotism of the Romanovs, and the Russian Revolution.
Then follows an account of the rise of the Soviet state, its world role and recent changes. The up-to-the-minute conclusion analyzes the Soviet collapse and its devolution into 15 separate republics, the tragedy of the Chechen War, and Vladimir Putin's election. "While destination oriented visitors will gain much from this expose, students and others will find it a fine, easy method of absorbing Russian history." -Bookwatch

fully revised and updated? Not so!.......2007-07-24
In hand are the fourth and fifth editions of A traveller's history of Russia. Or is it Russia and the USSR? Both forms appear in both editions. The fifth (2006) appears to be a verbatim reproduction of the fourth, with the addition of a paragraph on terrorism on p. 293. Even the preface is unchanged.
The 4th ed. (2001) has such remarks as "what we now know as the USSR" (p. 1) and "The USSR is the largest country on the globe (p. 2)." Chapter 17 is captioned "The end of the Soviet Union." Such poor writing qualifies as misinformation. I view this publication askance. Especially since the covers of both these editions have "fully revised and updated."
A good history of Russia.......2003-06-04
The book covers so much ground that it can't go into any depth, but that doesn't stop the authors from giving a complete view of the highlights of Russia history. It starts before the Mongol horde invaded, and continues through Yeltsen, and ends with Putin's taking office. (And with a 2001 publication date, that's about all you could expect!)
For those interested in more information, the books lists it's sources (broken down by chapter), as well as a recommended reading list. It also includes a list of rulers, and a timeline that starts at 830 BCE!
Revision did not catch the demise of the USSR.......2001-09-18
This book has on the cover: Fourth edition, fully revised and updated. On the title page verso: First American edition published 2001 by Interlink Books. On p. vii "The USSR is the largest country on the globe ..." (repeated on p. 2) P. 1 has: "... what we now know as the USSR."
An earlier edition will probably suit you as well as this one.
Good Introduction to the history of multiethnic Russia.......1999-11-10
If you want to know more about how the country of Russia evolved through the years and how the country went from a tsarist system to socialisim/communism I can highly recommend this book. It is written in a straightforward manner which enlightens the reader and at the same time entices one to want to be more knowledgeable about historical incidents not only about Russia but other countries and cultures.
Regards, D'Vante

chinamom.......2003-07-25
My four year daughter is adopted from China. She really likes this book. She immediately started copying the characters. It is a simple book that provides a way for her to learn about her birth culture. It is worth adding to your collection.
Sadly disappointing.......2001-06-02
The only Chinese words in this book are the 10 numbers. The "Pronunciation Guide" does not use the standard romanization (pinyin) nor does it even hint that Chinese is a multi-toned language. The text is simplistic but uninteresting--had there been a bit of Dr Seuss or Boynton rhyming it might have been more fun.
The pictures are nice.
I'm learning Mandarin and hoping to teach my daughter as she grows up. This book won't help.
counting your way to china.......2000-06-23
This book is an excellent tool to teaching to count in chinese. My daughters ages 3 and 6 found this book fun. It makes learning more fun and also show beautiful pictures of china.
Interesting and educational.......1999-11-25
This is a simple, interesting and educational book. I enjoy it because it presents a wide variety of interesting information about China (geography, musical instruments, writing, animals, etc.) while organized around teaching the Chinese numbers. Even as an adult with some knowledge of China, I was able to learn a little from the book, as I'm sure children will learn even more. I love learning about a variety of aspects of a culture!

Customer Reviews:
Overpriced and boring - but required reading.......2007-09-11
This book is an example of why I don't read "how to" books. $49 is far too much for this book, considering how much more in depth information you will get from "Jump Start Your Book Sales" or anything by Marion Ross and of course that old curmudgeon John Kremmer.
But don't you dare let that stop you from buying THIS book. This book is indeed full of "stuff" you need to do to sell a lot of books in places you never thought of (which is the point of reading this book). Look: the book is painful to read. Seriously. Don't take my word for it: YOU try it. But dose up on NoDoz and a few cafe au laits and get to studyin'. If you ever want to break the 10,000 books sold barrier (the absolute minimum number of copies sold to be considered a "best seller" in any sense of the term) you need to know what is in this book. Perhaps there will be a companion WORKBOOK someday that will help the author (you) actually complete some or all of the ideas covered in this text. [That was a blatant hint by the way: this book needs a workbook]
I like what Brian has done here and I wish him well. After all I gave him $50 of my money (+ s&h) so I "support" him. I hope that in the future he will pen a more author-friendly version that actually holds your hand along the process. An excellent companion to this book is "The Complete Guide to Book Publicity" by Jodee Blanco I believe. Nice girl. Well written. Knows her stuff too. Check out Kremmer as well. Then come back to THIS book for more ideas. At $50 a copy though, do not let this book out of your sight.
More Tips Than I Could Ever Use.......2007-01-21
Brian's book is so full of fabulous tips and ideas, I don't even have enough time in the day to apply them all...that's a good thing. It's always better to have more than we need, rather than less. I think it's also helpful to readers because different ideas will appeal to different readers, so any author or aspiring author is bound to find something that appeals to them.
One of the best features about the book is the CD-Rom included. When I first received my book, that was the first thing I did...pop the CD in my computer, listen to his intro and get started on the calendar, timeline and marketing plan. Incredibly useful tools for getting started in moving beyond the bookstore. I applaud his efforts to help aspiring authors market and sell their books in creative ways through creative outlets.
A terrific book about selling your book to everyone else other than a bookstore.......2006-12-12
Beyond The Bookstore" is a terrific book about selling your book to everyone else other than a bookstore. I met Brian while co-presenting on a panel at a Learning Annex seminar in NYC on the topic of book marketing. I covered the topic of book publicity, he covered selling books. Brian Jud says since more than half of all book sales come from outside bookstores it's important to target these markets. Mass merchandisers such as Wal-Mart or Costco, gift shops, airport stores, home-shopping networks, book clubs, libraries, network-marketing companies, catalogs, associations, government agencies, corporations, educational markets, retail stores and military branches all buy and sell books.
Brian walks you through creating a special sales plan, where to find the people you need to contact to make your pitch. If you really want to sell books outside the bookstore market then buy Beyond the Bookstore.
As a book publicist it's imperative for me to keep up with all of the great books and magazine articles being published on the topic of book marketing and book promotion. I've read dozens and dozens of books on book marketing and this one is on my top ten list.

For Every Book Author.......2006-05-12
You've invested a great deal of writing time and energy into producing an excellent manuscript or a nonfiction book proposal. Now put yourself in the shoes of the acquisitions editor. Each year you receive literally hundreds of these proposals from literary agents and authors. How do you find a proposal that stands out from the crowd? (Hint: It's not the proposal on colored paper.)
For the last several years, as an acquisitions editor, I've been on the receiving end of these proposals and manuscripts. I love to find an author who knows the necessity of a sales partnership with the publisher. These authors understand it takes more than an excellent book but they need to actually work at selling large volumes of the book. Beyond the Bookstore helps the author better understand about how books are sold.
Have you ever read the sales numbers of a particular book and wondered how that particular book ever sold in the bookstore? Some of those big sales numbers have been outside the bookstore. In fact, more than half of all books sold each year are sold outside of bookstores.
Beyond the Bookstore is a valuable resource for any writer to think outside the box. Jud covers 79 specific strategies for generating "special sales." A special sale is anything outside of the traditional bookstore setting. As you read this book, you determine which ideas are appropriate for your book then incorporate these sales ideas into your nonfiction or fiction book proposal. When you include this type of information from the beginning of the publishing process, it will show your publisher your good intention to be proactive in the sales process. Proactive authors who understand how to sell books are attractive authors to any publisher.
Reed Business also produces Publisher's Weekly and this book is loaded with current statistics and contact information such as, "Today, the worldwide book market approximates $90 billion. Almost one third of those sales occur in the United States. Over the past ten years, the amount of sales through traditional outlets is decreased by 11 per cent (down 19 per cent without factoring Internet sales), and sales through non-bookstore outlets have increased by 8 per cent."
Three major advantages of special sales include control over your destiny, customization potential and nontraditional market segmentation. As an additional resource, this book includes a CD-Rom to help generate a marketing plan and give the right emphasis for each market channel. Yes, your publisher should generate the marketing plan but they only can give each book a limited amount of potential. Only the author has the passion and intense interest in their book.
Use this book to increase your sales and strengthen your book proposals.
Best Book for Learning About Special Sales.......2006-02-03
I'm a newbie to the field of self-publishing, so I have read every book that I could put my hands on about this subject. This is, in my opinion, the best, most useful book out there in terms of marketing your books.
The book arrived in the mail today and I read it cover to cover and just put it down (I'm passionate about bringing my books to market). It is thoroughly researched, comprehensive and very practical. I especially appreciate that Brian Jud "gets" marketing. Publishing isn't about publishing what we want to write it is about meeting consumers' needs. This book teaches you how to do just that.
Thanks, Brian.

A visual explosion of kitchy plastic eye candy!.......2004-06-24
This book is absolutely amazing! Huge vivid color photos of the most obscure and beautiful in kitchy plastic! The book is also very informative, following the history of plastic itself, and showing examples of all the types of plastics! This would make a magnificent coffee table book, Ive had numerous comments on this book and everyone loves it! I just wish amazon had a photo to show you the cover!
If you love kitchy things from those goofy plastic snowglobes you get in tourist shops to bake-a-lite radios, get this book!
Needs more 50's Kitsch.......2002-01-21
A very colorful book and fun to look at but,if your a baby boomer you will notice a lack of the real 50's kitsch items. Plastic items from the 60's and 70's forward are not my idea of Kitsch.

A What and When of Gardening in Ohio.......2007-09-02
A very thorough and well organized guide. It not only tells you what to do but helps you frame the questions you should be asking. Highly recommended.
GREAT GARDENING BOOK.......2007-01-14
I bought my first house in October 05 and I wanted beautiful spring and summer flowers. The property had roses and several other perennials. I needed a book that would help this beginner know what to do with what was already there as well as help me add new plants and flowers. I reviewed 25 gardening books from my library network last spring. This was by far my favorite. It gives you all the things you should know for lots of different flowers and plants and lets you know things you should be doing each month...like plant, prune, fertilize, etc. There are two versions of this book the original and this revised version. The revised costs a little more but there are color pictures in this edition as well as a much better layout in general. To me the newer edition was worth every extra penny and is the only one that I actually purchased out of all the books I reviewed. A must have for any Ohio gardener.

Customer Reviews:
This book is amazing..........1999-10-23
I love this book. This is the quintessential Brandy book. Her pal, Karu Daniels, really did a good job in delivering the goods on one of my most favorite celebrities. This book is packed with photos, nice color ones. The title says it all, it's really intimate. The book has it all: her early beginnings in McComb, Mississippi, a very revealing chapter of her mother (who we hear is not so nice), a chapter on her fine little brother Ray-J (He's so cute), a chapter about Moesha, and tons of useful facts about her music, movies and fun facts.
Very entertaining book!.......1999-10-07
Karu Daniels did a fabulous job researching and writing this book--you can really tell that he is friends with the diva and not just another writing doing a hack job! Great pix too! If you want the inside scoop on "Moesha" and her music, this is the book to get. Loved it!
