Beautiful photography, follows and expands on the extremely well done PBS series.

Great Lighthouse Photo Album.......2000-08-09

Ray Jones is among the best lighthouse photographers working today. He provides some of his best photos for a book in which writer John Grant provides a good narrative and history of lighthouses in general. This book strikes a good balance between information and photography.

Visual and Reading Pleasure.......2000-01-14

I picked up this book without having seen the companion PBS series, but now I'd really like to see it. The book presents a very nice story for each lighthouse visited, discussing more of the people stories that go along with the history of the houses themselves. A really nice find for lighthouse fans.

It is very informative and provides much detail about all the lighthouses. There are numerous pictures and they are absolutely great. This book also gives you very good directions on how to travel to each of the lighthouses some of which are very remote. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

There is too much fluff added to this book. Too much "why mail order is a great business" introductory type of thing... I was hoping to read the how-to, what, when, where, get down to the business and let me decide if it is for me.

I don't like persuasion - "why you need to do this" or "why you should have a business". First, what may work for you, may never work for me. Second, it wasted my time, the reason I am buying the book is I want to know how, not debating whether I should with the writer.

If someone is still thinking whether they should have a business or not, then there are many general business books out there to read. I guess the title is very specific but the content is too general for me.

This book was a pretty good book. It gives lots of examples as what to do, and what I learned from, what not to do. Very informative and the information can be used to look back on. Lots of examples to writing classified ads as well as sales letter that will get you the responses you are aiming for.

This book is a good book to start off with. Im starting my own home based business and I felt like I was about ready to start after reading this. He gives you good examples of classfied ads that he has used and shows you how to write sales letters that will pull responses. He tells you what you should and shouldnt do. I will probably always refer to this book. You should also try Melvin Powers mail order books but dont try 101 Great Mail Order Businesses by Tyler Hicks.

Animal Lovers Beware!.......2000-08-04

I purchased this book hoping to fill the void that the passing of James Herriot has left. Grant Kendall's book falls far short of the warm, touchable, expansive writing style of James Herriot. Reading about a day in the life of vet Grant Kendall, I got the feeling that it's just business for him. He describes heart-wrenching situations with a detachment that I find disappointing. While certainly he does no harm to the animals that he serves, his means of expression does not clearly convey that he embraces them with the good brotherly grace of James Herriot. If you are looking to feel good while reading about animals, consider passing this book by. The author provides one painful story without leaving the reader with a speck of hope. That story haunts me still... And incidentally, he *hates* cows.

I was very sad when James Herriott died, knowing that there would be no more beautiful stories to read. Then along came Grant Kendall! He's funny, articulate, engaging, and a lovely writer. MORE, please!

During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the Dutch Republic performed a crucial function as the cultural and intellectual clearinghouse of Europe. It was partly through the existence of a well-established and highly competitive publishing industry and book trade that the Dutch were able to play such a prominent role in the international transmission of knowledge and ideas. Yet our understanding of the Dutch involvement in the European book trade still is limited and important questions remain to be answered. How was Dutch publishing and bookselling for the international market organised? What was the nature of the books that were exchanged? In order to stimulate research in this field an international colloquium was held in 1990 at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS), under the title "'Le Magasin de l'Univers.' The Dutch Republic as the Centre of the European Book Trade". This volume brings together the twenty-two contributions presented at the conference by historians of the book from England, France, Switzerland, the United States, Germany, and the Netherlands.
