This comprehensive field guide will appeal to expert and beginner alike, with over 600 wild-flower specimens from the woodlands, grasslands, and chalk downlands and the mountainous, aquatic, and maritime habitats of Britain and Ireland. Each entry gives Latin and common names; descriptions of flowers, fruit, and leaves; and habitat. Chapters also discuss the importance of wild flowers in their ecosystems, conservation and endangered species and offer advice on designing your own wildflower garden.

Customer Reviews:
Compass American Guides Montana.......2003-09-21
I stumbled upon the Compass America series at a local book store and couldn't believe the quality compared to other travel books.
This particular selection was superb. The author is passionate about Montana and the photographs are some of the best. The combination was far supierior to anything else I've seen.
The information provided on areas of the state were vivid and provided a good desription of the differing sections of the state. Within each of these various sections were specific descriptions of towns and cities.
Of course, areas of interest to travelers were highlighted, but not in a generic "FYI" format. The descriptions and trip advice have an actual caring quality, as though its author really wants you to enjoy Montana.
Traveling to Montana? Then pick up the book and get ready to experience the grandeur of the world's most beautiful places.
Not going to Montana? That's fine too. This beautiful book will help you enjoy a get away of the mind.

Book Description
The Ysengrimus is the first fully-fledged medieval beast-epic, and the poem in which Reynard the Fox makes his first appearance on the stage of world literature. It thus occupies a key position in the long and fertile tradition of medieval beast-literature, but it also claims attention as a masterpiece in its own right, the work of one of the most daring and original satirists of the Middle Ages. Despite its importance, the Ysengrimus has been comparatively neglected because of its linguistic difficulties. Jill Mann eases these difficulties by presenting an English translation alongside the Latin text, and accompanying it with a detailed commentary. A full- length introduction offers an original account of the poem which shows how literary structure and historical dimensions are fused into an original satiric vision of compelling power. This book will not only interest medieval Latin specialists, but will make this major text accessible to those working on the related vernacular traditions. Its analysis of the poem's allusions to contemporary persons and events will also be of considerable interest to historians of twelfth-century Flanders.
Customer Reviews:
To take is the law, to give the exception........2002-12-03
This epic is one of the most cynical and grim satires ever written.
Ysengrimus is the prototype of the monk disguised as a wolf. Christ was a shepherd for his sheep, the monks are wolves.
With a strong and blasphemous vocabulary, Nivardus insults relentlessly the Church and her representatives: 'They sell human beings for money, and even God'.
'You may commit what sins you want, you will be absolved if you can pay'.
What only counts for the monk Ysengrimus is power and money. If you have them you stay above the law; if you don't, you are lost.
But Nivardus takes revenge on the corrupt and wicked Ysengrimus through the hands of his nephew, Reinaert, the fox, who exploits in a gruesome manner the craving for power and money of his uncle. Ultimately, the Monk's skin is stripped off and his corps is thrown to the swine.
Apparently, this is the first time that the character of Reinaert, the fox, appears in the medieval literature. Here he is the avenger of the righteous, the poor, the real Christians.
In the latter works, Reinaert is portrayed as a cunning and cynical exploiter of human weaknesses. The social criticism of the Church disappeared. In this way, one could say that the author of the second Reinaert (Van den Vos Reinaerde) took revenge on the Ysengrimus by painting the fox as a not reliable and immoral character.
This epic is a powerful, colourful, lively and very modern work.
A masterpiece.
Book Description
Act I: Avoid conflict at all costs. Even when someone signs you up for something you really don't want to do. Act II: Try to hold things together, even when your life is spinning out of control. Act III: (You'll have to read the book to learn how it all plays out.)
Playwright Leah Townsend doesn't think of herself as a doormat. In fact, her life is pretty good. There's the gorgeous and dependable Edward (even if he is a little dull), and her challenging career (even if the last two plays were flops). The trouble is, Leah's feeling restless these days. The new play isn't going well. Her agent is handing out ultimatums. And her boyfriend Edward, who insists Leah "doesn't handle conflict well," has the nerve to enroll her in a conflict-management class full of people she's sure are her polar opposites, including a conservative talk-radio host named Cinco Dublin who thrives on the very thing Leah wants to avoid--making waves. Can a conflict-challenged playwright ever learn to stand her ground...even if life doesn't come in three predictable acts?
Customer Reviews:
Please wipe your feet first.......2007-07-02
Leah Townsend is a struggling playwright who's trying to regain the momentum from the one hit play she had. She's in a relationship with Dr. Edward Crowse, a physics professor who makes all her decisions for her. Her family always assumes she is the perfect child because she does everything they tell her too. Her best friend thinks that Leah will support her no matter what the situation or what time. Leah has been ok with this until one day she decides to change. This leads to Edward enrolling her into an anger management class. Humiliated and reluctant, Leah goes expecting to blend in. However she soon discovers that being a doormat is not what she really wants to be in life.
This book was really difficult to read at first. I really didn't like the way that Leah was being treated by everyone. I couldn't stand that she wouldn't stand up to anybody in her family and friends and how she would just let them walk all over her. I really hated her boyfriend Edward. That guy was such a jerk especially after enrolling her in the anger management class. I mean what type of person does that just because someone tries out something new or disagrees with you? But then as I kept reading, I liked how Leah was changing. She learned to finally deal and resolve conflict instead of just always giving in. I liked how she knew that this could radically change her life and the relationships she was in. She changed her life completely and finally became happy instead of just settling for mediocrity. The anger management classes were fun to read, some of the characters I would have had problems keeping my temper with! I applauded to her decision with Edward. It was funny though to see how he tried to change for her or at least his thinking of what "change" really was. I enjoyed her relationship with Cinco, it was just what she needed. The title of this book really catches your eye as does the cover. It's a great chick lit book and it's one I think a lot of people should read. Don't be afraid to change.
The Prodigal daughter's sister.......2007-03-30
Leah Townsend has trapped herself into a corner of her own predictability and passiveness. It's no wonder that one of the characters she is writing about says what she only wishes she had the courage to say. Add a predictable/boring boyfriend, a conflict resolution class, a best friend who is making bad choices, a prodigal sister who has finally come home, a play to write and you have one messed up slice of life.
Gutteridge has written a very realistic character, full of flaws. She avoids conflict, lies, falls back on commitments, etc. But in the end finds the peace that she has been looking for. An enjoyable story, one that takes off from the start. I particularly enjoyed the humor of the writing process and talking to her characters. It's exactly what happens!
Beyond the chic lit surface, there is depth to this story as well. It is based somewhat on the parable of the prodigal son, where Leah is the son that stayed at home as the "good child." Characters develop as the story moves on and you come to like them better, or maybe most of the characters. There is also a bit irony in who is the worst off at avoidance issues - Leah or Edward. And look who signed up who for the conflict resolution class, and how! Talk about not wanting to face conflict. The author also throws in character foils and parallel plots. It's just full of things to discover, if you're looking. If not, it's still a great story.
So Real.......2007-02-03
Most books I read, even if I like them, are pretty predictable. By page 10 you already know basically what the ending is going to bring about. Well, this is one book that isn't predictable. I had no idea what was going to happen, and I couldn't have guessed the ending until almost the end. And if a good book is supposed to stir your emotions and make you feel something, then this was a great book. I thought a LOT about this book after I finished it.
The heroine is playwright Leah Townsend. And I absolutely hated her boyfriend. He wasn't SO bad, but then, he was! And when he signed her up for a conflict management support group, I felt her humiliation. But he lived to regret his mistake, as you will see if you read the book. This is a book that makes you examine your own choices and attitudes, and I like that in a book. I highly recommend it.
Hilarious & poignant story of self-discovery..........2006-11-12
Leah Townsend is a struggling playwright who skyrocketed to instant fame with the surprise success of her first play, The Twilight T-Zone. Since then, her writing -- and her relationship with her ever-dependable boyfriend, Edward -- has gone downhill. She can't seem to recapture the "magic" that made her first play a success, and as far the relationship goes, well -- suddenly Leah finds herself wanting more out of life (she's just not sure exactly what "more" means -- and if "more" involves conflict, well forget about it). When Edward interprets her desire for change as an inability to cope with conflict, Leah finds herself enrolled in a conflict management class with Cinco Dublin, a man who's everything she's not...and to whom she finds herself increasingly attracted.
Much like Tamara Leigh's Stealing Adda, Gutteridge provides her readers with a fascinating (and often humorous) glimpse into the life and career of a writer -- dealing with agents, writer's block, and self doubt -- and of course there's the inevitable romantic entanglement. There's even hilarious input from Jodie Bellarusa, the main character in Leah's work-in-progress. Leah's voice is fresh, funny, and oh-so-honest. In Leah, Gutteridge has crafted an incredibly hilarious, relatable, very real heroine. Leah's transformation from a pushover and a doormat to outspoken self-assurance is both incredibly entertaining and inspiring. This is the perfect summer read -- light and engrossing, with characters so real they'll stay with you long after you close the novel. Highly recommended.
Hillarious and So True!.......2006-10-24
Laugh out loud funny, Rene Gutteridge's new book, My Life as a Doormat (In Three Acts), will keep you amused and cheering for playwright Leah Townsend and the crazy participants in her conflict management class. When Leah's boyfriend, Edward, enrolls her in the class without her consent, Leah has no choice but to attend--she wouldn't want to create a conflict. An obstacle course of hilarious challenges, an agent handing out ultimatums, a boyfriend who likes things status quo, and an intriguing talk-radio host who wants to upend the stodgy stability of her doormat life make this a fast read. This inventive comedy is filled with page-turning quirks and twists. For example, a fictional main character from the current play Leah is writing interjects her "thoughts" about the author's daily decisions--a delight for anyone wanting to "read" a writer's mind. The entertaining conflicts stack like a row of dominos ready to topple, and it's all Leah can do to keep from engaging in the very thing the guy she's most interested in loves the best--cheering on the waves that could sweep her heart overboard if she doesn't learn to stand her ground.

A Classy Lady's Non-Classy Memoirs.......2000-05-20
Helen Hayes whose life story would be fascinating to all fans of Broadway and/or Hollywood pretty much squanders this effort by traducing a large assortment of individuals. What makes this badmouthing all the more unpleasant is the fact that most of her targets were deceased at the time of its publication and unable to present their side of the story.
While the recurring instances of charcter assasination are the book's biggest liability, the First Lady of the American Theater also comes off as somewhat self-centered and shallow.
Those who respect the many noble actions which typified Helen Hayes' final decades will be disappointed and likely disturbed by this autobiography that does not do her memory justice.
Customer Reviews:
english--sara c........2006-12-13
For more than fifty years, Helen Hayes has been a star on stage, screen, and television. In that time, she crossed paths with some of Broadway's most famous stars: Charlie Chaplin, Scott Fitzgerald, Gloria Swanson, and many more. As for being acclaimed First Lady of the American Theater, Hayes starred in her first play when she was just six years old. My Life In Three Acts tells about Hayes's hit play, such as Victoria Reigna, and about some of her not so respected plays. In her autobiography, Hayes speaks with wit and wisdom on topics that are both public and private. She expresses her thoughts on World War Two, and about the assassination of Kennedy. She reflects on the mournful parts of her life: the death of her husband and daughter, and the alcoholism of those dear to her. Hayes also supplies amusing anecdotes about her friends, which include John Ford and Al Capone. After finishing her career as an actress, Hayes expresses her opinion on what is wrong with the American theater today, such as how porn theaters are taking over classic Broadway theaters.
I found My Life In Three Acts to be inspiring by how Hayes improved her life everyday. Throughout Hayes's career, her life was rousing in every aspect. "George Tyler, (a movie producer,) once told me that I were only four inches taller, I could reach the heights too." I liked this quote because I could tell that throughout Hayes' acting days, she was growing by exceeding heights and overcoming problems. Such as after a horrific event occurs in her family, Hayes finds a way to deal with the problem by taking sympathy from others, moving homes, and doing what she does best; act. Hayes was able to capture her emotions and to put them into words that made me feel like I was engaged in the experiences as well. For example, she wrote about a delightful childhood treat of hers that her grandmother used to prepare for her. "She would cut a hole in the orange, insert a peppermint stick, and then we'd squeeze the orange and suck the juice through the stick." I felt as if I was enjoying the treat myself.
The events Hayes encountered were very detailed and made My Life In Three Acts exciting. Some of my favorite parts of the book describe the stirring parties Hayes attended. "The people who sat around that table in the Algonquin Hotel's Rose Room set the style for New York, dictating what one should read, think, wear, eat, what plays to see, what opinions to have, and so on." Not only did this quotation capture `the style for New York,' but it also described the style of the kind of people that were at the parties and in Hayes's life. I thought that it was also exciting to hear about the different places Helen toured through throughout her career, from France to Oklahoma City. One time while touring, Hayes got ready for bed on the train and saw a breathtaking site; the stars in the night sky seemed close enough to touch, and the snow sparkled like diamonds. Hayes then rushed to tell the rest of the actors on the train, and they became enthralled too. This scene in the book demonstrated all of the simple things in Hayes's life that she appreciated and didn't take for granted. Everyday there seemed to be excitement in Hayes's life. Because of how inspired and excited I felt reading this book, I can defiantly call it an engrossing memoir that is able to take a reader back to stimulating theater life in the mid-1900's.
