On July 4, 1997, The Mars Pathfinder lander, cocooned in an ungainly mass of airbags, was dropped from a parachute 40 feet above Mars. It slammed to the surface, kicked up the red Martian dust, bounced along like a giant beach ball and rolled to a stop. Pathfinder's three solar panel "petals" unfolded. Nestled inside was Sojourner, a one foot high, remote control vehicle that looked like something you might find under a Christmas tree. The world had a new hero.

The Mars mission was a genuine phenomenon. In a one month period, there were over a half billion hits on the mission's web site, breaking all records by hundreds of millions of hits. The most watched, most talked about space flight since men had landed on the Moon, it was also the most unlikely.

In The Adventures of Sojourner, Susi Trautmann Wunsch tells the entire story: from the small team of young scientists testing a simplified, common sense of technology, to the tension of blast off, to the wild bounce landing, to Sojourner's trials and tribulations along the rocky road of Mars, to ultimate and resounding success.

It is a page-turning narrative that, along the way, explains the intricacies of planetary exploration to a new generation of young readers. The diagrams and artist's conceptions make space technology instantly accessible. The photographs of little Sojourner tooling along the dusty, red emptiness of Mars make space travel seem not so distant at all.

My son had this book assigned for a science projects class. Good, clear, photos and drawings/charts and interesting/useful facts. The text is detailed but still moves right along.

What a cool book!.......1999-04-03

This is a good book for kids between 8 and 12 years old. A little to heavy for my 6 year old, and probably too lightweight for a 13 year old. My son, however, was entranced by the pictures, and was rather happy when I "dumbed" down the reading to his level.

Overall, I am quite happy having purchased it since it had enought pictures that I had not seen.

A wonderful book!.......1998-11-18

As the one who actually got to remotely drive Sojourner on Mars, I have to say that Susi has done an outstanding job of capturing the excitement of this once in a lifetime event in space exploration. She goes into great detail about how we created the rover and lander, launched and guided them over 120 million miles to Mars and finally how we landed safely and explored the surface. The numerous illustrations and photos in the book should really make the mission come alive to young readers. The primary Mars Pathfinder Rover Driver gives this book two big thumbs up! -- Brian K. My students and I enjoyed this book. The narrative was compelling and the children loved the photographs and illustrations--particularly the renderings of future Mars missions. The technical material is presented in easily understood terms. I would hightly recommend it to other teachers..

In her lavishly illustrated and thoughtfully written new book, Wunsch manages to capture the joy of the experimental process and the pride inherent in launching a project of this magnitude. My children were enthralled--Sojourner has fast become their first choice for evening reading.

If you've ever wanted to tell your boss what he can do with your job, if you've ever thought, "boy, if I could just do this (whatever it is that you love) for a living...", or if you want to call all the shots when choosing a career, this is the book for you. This book is an easy, enjoyable read. Barbara gives some ideas for self employment, and helps you evaluate which opportunities are a good fit. Not a step-by-step primer, but a great book to help you open up to the possibilities.

This is a great book and very motivational. It was helpful with many suggestions and informational if you want to live a better life independent of being dependant on others to make your living. A great and fun read, the reason for reading this does not matter. I purchased for my son-in-law and read it first. Now that he has it and does not wish to return it, I will purchase my own copy.

Afraid to Change Jobs - Don't Be - This Book Makes it Fun!.......2006-07-28

I first encountered "Making a Living Without a Job:.." by Barbara Winter about 9 years ago. I had bought it for my husband, who was in between jobs, and ended up reading it myself. By the time I was done, I had determined to leave a 20 year career in computers and go to massage school. I now own my own health center in New York state.

One year I gave 10 of these books to people who were 'stuck' in their jobs/careers but who were afraid to change. As a result 14 people ended up changing their jobs/careers because the people to whom I gave the book also passed it on.

I find, as a massage therapist, that much of the stress people have is due to a poor fit in their career. What might have been right at one time in their life, no longer is good for them.
I recommend this book to someone at least once each week and have now decided to have it in stock.

I recently gave copies to two friends who might need to leave high executive positions in an international corporation.

ANYONE at any LEVEL in ANY JOB can find the step-by-step analysis in this book the most helpful thing EVER in helping them to find the job that will really be fulfilling for them!

He goes in great depth how to start a bible garden or expand on one you've already got. He includes graphs to help you plan your garden, extensive information of plants, alternatives to those that won't grow in your area or cannot be obtained. A true inspiration for our "Bible Memorial Garden" at our church. A must read for anyone who would like to have a bible garden or would like to grow plants found mentioned in the bible.

this is a solid, almost academic, handbook. it's points you toward the things you need to figure out but you'll still need to get additional information on your local regulations. personnaly, it discouraged me from opening a buisness at this time.
