The only reference you'll ever need........2001-08-18

Our family and extended family traveled to France & Italy this summer. This book was the most comprehensive, quick guide for historic background, inside stories and accurate directions, as well as reviews. Every hotel or restaurant was exactly as reviewed. No surprises! When you are traveling with 15 people you don't need surprises, just information you can rely on. This book and the Fodor's Provence Gold guide were excellent examples of this!

OK, but not thorough.......2000-10-01

This is fine if you want to hit the main tourist sites and bigger towns. However, if you really want to explore Tuscany, we used the Food Lovers Guide to Tuscany, Charming Inns and Hotels of Tuscany and Michellin. Also, the Eyewitness guide provides better coverage of Florence.

A Fabulous Guide.......2004-01-04

Of all the guidebooks I've ever used, this one is the best. Extenstive information not only for the main tourist attractions in the area, but also good information for the smaller out of the way towns. This books is utterly thorough and accurate. The information on art and its historical background is significant and comprehensive. It's well organized and easy to use. And it pointed us to great restaurants. This guidebook literally contains two or three times as much information as the other ones. I couldn't be more enthusiastic. By the way, if you're going to rural Tuscany and Umbria, you'll have a fabulous trip and this book will make it even better.

Great Tour Book.......2002-12-03

My wife and I used this book extensively on a 10-day tour of Tuscany and Umbria. Excellent mix of history and restaurant and lodging recommendations. A few drawbacks to the book. The first is that many of the restaurants were not marked on the maps and the directions given were incomplete. Another drawback that I found is that the hotel recommendations were inconsistent from city to city - Pisa had only budget hotels listed while Assisi had hotels across the range. But these are minor criticisms, overall an excellent book.

The best guide I have ever bought!.......2002-03-17

After tooking a 2-month off sabbatical at my job, I decided to spend some time driving all around Italy, and I can't thank this guide enough. It has all the information someone needs for traveling in Tuscany and Umbria, the two most fascinating regions in Italy (ok, the Amalfi Coast is great too). All cities are described in detail, from the historical background to what to see and what to do. This guide allowed me to do exactly what I wanted: to hit the road, stop by somewhere (Trasimeno Lake, the Orvieto hill, San Gimignano Film Festival) and just decide what the next stop would be. The author has a hilarious and superb style to describe anything, from the Cathedral in Orvieto to the paintings in Assisi and the pottery in Gubbio. Gold medal to the chapter about San Gimignano... After this, I have bought Rough Guides for all my trips.

Great detail, but lack of organization.......2001-06-12

I must agree with the previous review. The information about the different sights is excellent--very detailed, yet not boring. Many of the descriptions made me chuckle. However, much of the organizational information was lacking. For example, there were numerous delicious-sounding restaurants and gelateria listed for Florence, but they were not marked on the map!

Rough Guide to Tuscany and Umbria.......2000-06-03

We used the Rough Guide as our way to avoid the throngs that were carrying the other guidebooks, and the highlights of our trip resulted from following its suggestions. I was impressed by the detailed research on small out of the way places.

If you want to intensify your travel experience in an area and explore the local treasures, carry the Rough Guide!

Strong on history - short on strategies.......2001-03-10

Chapter 2, The History of Italian Immigration, is very well done!! It really helped me understand why my grandparents would have left Gimigliano, Italy in 1906 and what their journey to Ellis Island might have been like. I thoroughly enjoyed the way Brockman told this tale. The remaining chapters on genealogical search strategies and resources were helpful - but duplicates of information you find elsewhere. The value of the book is in the first 86 pages.

I think this book is perfect if your looking for a history of the Harley Davidson Motorcycle and the company. This gives great dates and also tells what was happening in the world beyond harley davidson.

Great timeline on Harley-Davidson's.......1999-11-25

I received this book as a gift several years ago and have enjoyed it each time I've flipped through its pages. It mixes american nostaliga with Harley history giving you a point of reference. It's a great timeline book. If you want to understand the mindset of america when certain Harley-Davidson models were around, then get this book.

Probably the best book on the history of Harley-Davidson.......1997-11-21

If you love Harleys, then this book is an absolute must for your bookshelf. Great historical treatment of the company with plenty of pictures to satisfy even the hungriest eyes. Plenty of cultural references, too. If you saw the TBS special on Harley-Davidson, this will take you one step further.

Love to hike.......2007-03-15

Does a good job, but incompletely.......2001-06-25

First, let's look at the strengths of Marilyn Dwelley's "Spring Wildflowers of New England". The illustrations are excellent, extremely simple to grasp and showing enough detail to "rough out" the identification of the majority of flowers one is likely to see, without a lot of extraneous background material seen in many photographic collections. Second, its small size makes it useful for the field. Third, the index is pretty complete, allowing you to look up many flowers by multiple common names as well as the official Latin nomenclature.

The weaknesses are also significant. There is no introduction to speak of but, rather, the book simply opens with one page of definitions, then a stream of flowers. There is no attempt to divide flowers up by anything but color; with so many white flowers, some attention to grouping by size or form would make identification more manageable. There is little information on many flowers other than their form and presentation in the wild, while for others there are comments about edibility, folklore, etc. Also, the division of flowers into color groups is slightly peculiar as she includes red flowers in the pink group and violet flowers with the blue group. And some guides contradict her comments such as regarding the edibility of the May-apple fruit. BUT, overall, despite my negative comments, I like this guide (I bought it, didn't I?) and would recommend it to be used with a bulkier guide, like the Audobon series book, as a backup for more detailed information.

If you want to know what is blooming in your New England surroundings, this is the book to reach for. Arranged by season and color with color illustrations as well as both common and latin names, this book can satisfy any level of naturalist's curiousity. It is great to see this hard to find volume back in print and in hardcover to hold up in the field!

There are many books about Bob Hope and what seems to be an endless amount of movie,newsreels and recordings that we have enjoyed for a long,long time. Thanks to all this material, and so many memories of his entertaining life,we can continue to enjoy it over and over again.
Bob was born in England on May 29,1903 and was given the name of Leslie.When he told students and friends his name was Les Hope;they teased him by calling him "Hopeless".He saw the humor in this,but started to call himself "Bob";but maybe that was what ignited something that resulted in a lifetime of humor. At the age of 4 the family left for America. Bob developed an amazing career around humor and by the time he died on July 27,2003 ,at 100,he could arguably qualify as the greatest man of comedy during his lifetime;and maybe ever.Just the fact that he was seen and known by so many and carried on for so long;would qualify him for that honor.
This little book is quite different in that it breaks Bob's life down into its 10 decades and presents his life and humor during those decades. By presenting his life and humor in this fashion;we are able to see how much it followed the history and events of the time. Even though his humor went on for such a long period;it was always current and appropriate for the time.
His style of getting humor across was to be short and blunt. His jokes seldom lasted more than a couple of lines. Another aspect of Hope's comedy was that his humor I can't ever remember any joke of his that could offend anyone,he just didn't deal with that sortof thing.He was so good,he did not have to resort to vulgar language or thoughts to entertain the masses.
Bob Hope defined what we have come to know as "A Class Act" ;and his daughter has given us a great testimonial to it. Thanks Linda ,what wonderful people you were blessed to have had for parents.

Bob Hope was one of the most widely known people of the twentieth century. He was recognized for his skills in acting and comedy, and he was also well known for his entertainment of the troops overseas in a time of war. This book was written by Bob Hope and his daughter Linda Hope. It was an unusual way of telling someone's life. The story of Bob Hope's life in this book was told through a combination of jokes and paragraphs. In the next few paragraphs, you won't find very many things about Bob Hope's public life. What you will find is topics on Bob Hope's personal life, outside of acting and entertaining.
Bob Hope was born in England in 1903. He grew to the age of 8 in England, and then moved to America. He was the youngest of eight children and this might have helped him develop a good sense of humor. In his early teen years, he found himself with a friend in show business. This is predominantly how he started acting and performing comedy. For the rest of his teen years, Hope struggled to pitch in to the family's money by acting in a part of a show every night for a few months at a time. The shows would travel around the country from time to time, but Bob was getting a little tired of traveling. To solve this annoyance, Bob Hope applied for a job on a movie set in Hollywood, California. He got the job and started in the movie acting business.
By his mid-thirties, he had been making movies for about a decade, and decided to try acting a little on his own. He started to add, little by little, jokes here and there to spruce up his movies. He never actually produced any movies, but he was the main actor in most of his movies. Of all the movies Hope was in, sixty of them were top movies of the year. He starred in over forty of those sixty movies. He is most famous for his acting and comedy work in the "Road" series of movies, which were very popular in the 1950's.
During the 1930's and early 1940's Bob Hope performed his comedy and acting in Hollywood. In the late 1940's, though, he started to leave Hollywood occasionally to go and entertain military troops overseas. He put his life in danger to go and help the minds of soldiers who were in a warzone for years at a time. His benefit performances helped the soldiers forget about the war for an evening or so. It also helped remind the soldiers of home. One of his quotes from a presentation in Vietnam said, "Look at me, fellas, these are the kind of clothes you'll be wearing when you get home!" After that day in Vietnam, 50 guys from that presentation group re-enlisted.
As Bob Hope grew older, he took up the game of golf, and came to enjoy it. He also acted less frequently. Instead of acting, he used up his valuable time to further entertain the troops fighting in various countries for America. I think he did this because he was a strong supporter of American spirit, and wanted to do anything to help or better serve the people that give him freedom. America is his adopted country. Bob Hope continued this tradition as he grew into his fifties and sixties, and finally set its place in him in his seventies and on. He performed for the troops in every warzone until the late 1990's. Even so, Bob Hope will always be what he was; a famous actor who based his lines and roles on comedy. He died recently at the age of one hundred and one, but his legacy will go on forever.

Bob Hope was never a great favorite of mine. And this though like every American movie- going and later television- watching child of my time I spent a lot of time watching him fool around with Bing and Dotty Lamour. Bob was a bit of a wise- guy and a bit cold somehow. He lacked the warmth of favorites like Uncle Miltie and Jack Benny and Amos and Andy.
But as the years went by I began to appreciate him a bit more. And this especially when he became much older and became almost the sole survivor of a whole generation of American comedians.
This joke- book compiled by his daughter gives jokes, decade by decade, ten chapters for ten decades of his one- hundred year old life.
While there is not much laughing out-loud material there are quite a few smiles to be gotten out of this collection.
There is also the story of a self- made hardworking kid who really made it big in America and appreciated it very much. And did work hard to give it back.
Thanks for the memories, Mr. Hope.

A Life In Jokes Is Not Funny.......2005-03-10

The initial idea of Mr. Hope putting his life into jokes sounds good. He was a comedian. He was good at what he did. What better way could he relay his life story? The problem is that all together, these jokes lose their humor.

The book might be useful for quotes, but overall as an autobiography it is seriously lacking.

The forest gump of bob hope.......2005-02-24

Having met Bob Hope, I was really pleased how this one turned out. It was the biography of Bob through his jokes. It was really funny and well done. The cool thing about it was going through each stage and found the 10 year jokes were just great. If you ever watched Forest Gump then this is what it was like for me. There were things happening during each stage that Bob joked about that told the story of the time but also about how people lived during those times. Great book.
