A good start.......2007-06-22
After travelling in Europe with the Lonely Planet guides for Paris and Barcelona, I found this guide somewhat more difficult to navigate. However, I suppose you must consider that the city guides will generally be more detailed than those for an entire country.
Although the guide gives a wealth of attractions, restaurants, and sleeping options for the various regions, I found it a bit lacking in maps and "how to get there" information. In addition, I would have liked it if the author had included a more website references. Finally, for some of the hotel and restaurant options, it would have been nice if there was some system used to denote how cheap or expensive a place was.
If you plan on using this book as your primary reference for your visit to Wales, I highly recommend purchasing a good map and plan on doing a lot of driving.
Good for detailed site information, but poor job updating.......2007-05-17
Like other Rough Guides, this book excels in its depth and breadth of coverage - if a town isn't covered, it does not have very much for the tourist. However, I was very disappointed by the out-of-date price information found in this ostensibly brand-new guide. While I don't expect guidebooks to be perfect, it became obvious that they had not contacted many of the bed and breakfasts they list for many years, as rates I was quoted were often almost twice as much as the Rough Guide price! In a couple of cases, the proprietor was no longer doing B&B, and had not been doing so for several years! So buy the Rough Guide for its detailed site information, but look elsewhere if you need accomodation advice.
Rough Guide to Wales.......2007-05-13
Great book for sightseeing and understanding history. Would be a perfect book if a bit more info on dining and shopping was added.
Could have used more opinions.......2003-05-12
My husband and I just toured Wales with this book and bought it because of the evaluations from other Amazon readers. I'd like to add my two-cents -- we were disappointed (probably because it came highly recommended). There is lots of information but no opinions so all items read as "this is the facts" == which is good but missing a "trip must see" or a "don't go out of your way" evauation. With a limited time to tour, we would have liked a guide to some of the must-sees.
In all fairness, all the facts are there and correct.
A very useful guide.......2002-09-20
This was the first Rough Guide I bought for the first of my solo
vacations. I chose it after comparing with various other guides,
such as the Blue Guide and others. This provided an immense
amount of detail on all sorts of historical sites, little towns,
etc. and was of great value in planning out my trip. One thing that keeps me from giving it 5 stars is that I later discovered that there are a number of "dark age" monuments (forts, inscribed stones, gravesites, etc.) that it doesn't list; it concentrates on larger places. I would have liked to have seen alot of those, as dark age Britain is an interest of mine. To be fair, other guides leave those things out, too, and I had to find the info in archeological and historical references.

Book Description
This true story of bold adventure recounts the extraordinary journeys of Fridtjof Nansen, a scientist and explorer determined to discover what secrets lie hidden in the frozen far North. He crossed the icy wastes of Greenland and later journeyed into the polar ice to study Arctic Ocean currents. On that expedition, he attempted to trek to the North Pole. What happened in the forbidding land of ice, polar bears, and killing cold makes for a gripping tale of survival. Illustrated with maps and Nansen's own photographs and drawings, this book contains a wealth of information about the polar region.
Customer Reviews:
Not a bad read for beginners.......2003-01-29
Not a bad book but is not extensive enough to become knowledgeable for cichlids has all the basics in set up different types of cichlids where they are etc, and is a definate read for the novice but needs a more detailed account for a person who already knows the basics
Helpful with a lack of pics.......2002-03-31
I thought that this book was very helpful in giving me information that I needed to breed my convinct cichlids, and set up the tank accordingly. Though the pictures were appropriate for the subject and well chosen, they were few and far between. I would have much preferred a color photo for every cichlid mentioned, but of course that's just too much to ask for in a book at the price that it was. All in all, it was well written, but needed visual aids of better quality to make it a 5-star book.
This book is a good price performer. OK for novice........1998-03-02
This book really tries to lay out what you are going to get into if you want to get into keeping, and possibly breeding, African Cichlids. Though it may leave some wanting more, at $5.56 (USD) it really packs alot of information and is a good summary of what you are in for with this intriguing hobby. Agreed, some of the information might be laid out a little more clearly. But it also presents a great deal more about all aspects of raising Africans that you don't get out of books costing $30, $50, even $100 (list price). I recommend it highly to a beginner. To one who has been involved in the hobby for a while, you may get more from rec.aquaria.freshwater.cichlids. But for the novice, I'd suggest you go for it before you decide to buy fish or a tank. It may help you avoid costly mistakes.
Disappointment.......1997-10-14
This book is disappointing. It focuses too much on breeding cichlids, yet it claims to be a book for beginners. Beginners are not interested in breeding cichlids, they just want to keep their fish alive. The book is also very vague. For example, when discussing the proper PH level for Malawi cichlids it says keep it above 7. What does that mean, 7.5, 8.2 ?
Book Description
This valuable survey uses theatrical costumes as contemporary clues to the wearing apparel that was in vogue in Italy, Spain, France, Germany, and Flanders from 1260 to 1840. Enhanced with the author's charming, accurately rendered illustrations, the study meticulously describes more than 200 costumes. Immensely useful to costume and cultural historians. 176 black-and-white illustrations.

This sequel to Carrots Love Tomatoes lists hundreds of herbs and flowers, with information on how their proximity can maximize the health and yield of vegetables, berry bushes, and fruit and nut trees. This edition features a dozen illustrated garden plans. 178,000 copies in print.
Customer Reviews:
Just as good as the Carrots book.......2007-07-19
Good companion book to Carrots Love Tomatoes. A must have for the gardener whether professional or homegrown.
Roses love Garlic.......2007-07-08
Recently purchased this book and find it very useful, not only from the types of roses but for all the other things that you would never think of doing with them. A nice book for gardeners and anyone interested in roses to have
Companion veggie gardening.......2007-01-10
I originally bought this book over 20 years ago from Rodale press and lost it in one of my many moves. It is an excellent resource for companion and inter-planting of flowers, many of which are edible, with vegetables. I now garden in containers and the concepts in this book lend themselves easily to this kind of gardening.
More about "Other Secrets" than "Companion Planting".......2001-10-19
I was a bit disappointed in this book. There were some references as to what plants complement each other, and what ones are used to repel certain insects, but those references were too few and buried deep within certain textual descriptions of various plants. Many, if not most, plant references did not even have companion planting information. Then there were the chapters referring to cosmetics, fragrances, and skin care that better belonged in a health and beauty aid book. I will be looking for a different book to supply my needs on companion planting--but this time will preview the book at a bookstore or library so I know what I am getting.
Companion planting at its finest.......2000-05-25
Roses Love Garlic is a great book for novice and experienced gardeners alike. For the beginning gardener, chapter 19 offers many sample garden plans for both small and large plots. The more experienced gardeners might enjoy chapters 12 and 13 which provide projects involve dried flowers and the use of natural dyes. My personal favorite is chapter 7, "Companion planting with flowers and herbs." This book is a must own for anyone interested in chemical free gardening.

Farmers almanac style information-.......2005-07-28
This is written as an A-Z style dictionary of gardening tips, up to date with the revival of natural pest management and organic gardening. Somehow this little book gets jam-packed with amazingly thoughtful, motivating and entertaining information-- very much reminds me of gathering materials from farmers dusty notes over a period of lets say 200 years or more. Has a believable wisdom put into useful format.
Book Description
Deborah Tannen's #1 New York Times bestseller You Just Don’t Understand revolutionized communication between women and men. Now, in her most provocative and engaging book to date, she takes on what is potentially the most fraught and passionate connection of women’s lives: the mother-daughter relationship.
It was Tannen who first showed us that men and women speak different languages. Mothers and daughters speak the same language–but still often misunderstand each other, as they struggle to find the right balance between closeness and independence. Both mothers and daughters want to be seen for who they are, but tend to see the other as falling short of who she should be. Each overestimates the other’s power and underestimates her own.
Why do daughters complain that their mothers always criticize, while mothers feel hurt that their daughters shut them out? Why do mothers and daughters critique each other on the Big Three–hair, clothes, and weight–while longing for approval and understanding? And why do they scrutinize each other for reflections of themselves?
Deborah Tannen answers these and many other questions as she explains why a remark that would be harmless coming from anyone else can cause an explosion when it comes from your mother or your daughter. She examines every aspect of this complex dynamic, from the dark side that can shadow a woman throughout her life, to the new technologies like e-mail and instant messaging that are transforming mother-daughter communication. Most important, she helps mothers and daughters understand each other, the key to improving their relationship.
With groundbreaking insights, pitch-perfect dialogues, and deeply moving memories of her own mother, Tannen untangles the knots daughters and mothers can get tied up in. Readers will appreciate Tannen’s humor as they see themselves on every page and come away with real hope for breaking down barriers and opening new lines of communication. Eye-opening and heartfelt, You’re Wearing That? illuminates and enriches one of the most important relationships in our lives.
“Tannen analyzes and decodes scores of conversations between moms and daughters. These exchanges are so real they can make you squirm as you relive the last fraught conversation you had with your own mother or daughter. But Tannen doesn't just point out the pitfalls of the mother-daughter relationship, she also provides guidance for changing the conversations (or the way that we feel about the conversations) before they degenerate into what Tannen calls a mutually aggravating spiral, a "self-perpetuating cycle of escalating responses that become provocations." – The San Francisco Chronicle
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
I'm Wearing THAT..........2007-10-06
A worthwhile read, both informative and validating. The early examples of mom-queries ("You're not wearing that, are you?"; "I could rip that roll right out of your hands"; "Are you planning on quartering those tomatoes?") and Tannen's "interpretations" had me arching my eyebrows. These are "really" examples of concern and caring? C'mon. You can talk to me 'til you're blue in the face about metamessages, but as far as I'm concerned, the above remarks don't need psycho-interpreting: They're just plain out of line no matter where they come from, whether it's the person who raised you or a stranger.
My other critique is the editing. What's with it these days? Why does a prominent author like Tannen stand for slipshod editing? Why pay a publisher? I marked up my (used) copy, and for certain could shave 10% off the text, and it would read better. One prominent annoyance was the felt need to cite e-mail as the medium via which information reached the author, even when it wasn't relevant, which in most cases it wasn't. That alone could've saved a few superfluous paragraphs. Why don't publishers outsource to...the likes of me? I could save them big buck$ and improve their product. It's beyond comprehension.
That having been said, once past the first chapter, Tannen is on the mark and knows her subject. Unlike some other reviewers, it doesn't bother me that her background isn't in the "right" field. If you've got something to say and therein lies truth, as far as I'm concerned, that's all it takes, and Tannen has it.
Good discussion, little solutions.......2007-09-25
"You're Wearing That?" is a frank review of the various dynamics in discussions between mothers and daughters, and it is helpful to have each angle pointed out and made clear that you're not alone in your dysfunction. In that way, the book was therapeutic.
On the other hand, it offered little solution to the problem, other than to recognize that is what you're doing, that those are universal problems, and why the female nature unwittingly recreates these situations. The basic format of most of her examples went something like, "The mom said this, the daughter took it wrong, the mom was surprised and hurt." And the general thrust of the advice was, "Moms, don't give too much advice. Daughters, they don't mean it that way so don't overreact."
I sensed that perhaps the author's recent loss of her mother led her to cast a more generous light on dysfunctional mothering communication, giving it the benefit of the doubt, while her late realization at how she'd misunderstood her mother led her to cast daughters' perceptions as the problem.
Perhaps that is true in more healthy families, but what if they DO mean it that way? There was some discussion of darker dysfunctional relationships, but not much advice about what to do to change that or heal from it, which left an otherwise comprehensive discussion quite lacking.
You're Wearing That?.......2007-08-13
Deborah Tannen does a wonderful job of discussing the way mothers and daughters use conversation/knowledge of each other to communicate. Enjoyed it immensely and want to pass it along to my sister, friends and daughters!
Interesting.......2007-07-28
I enjoyed reading this book, as it validated many of my own concerns with my daughters and my my mother. The interviews from other mothers as well as Tannen's own experiences enriched her basic points. Though I read 99% of the book, I skipped over portions that were not relevant to me. I do recommend this as a good resource for both mothers and daughters.
There are Better Books to Understand this Dynamic.......2007-06-11
I kept looking for the educational background of the author and there was nothing, i.e. degree in Women Studies, et al. In my opinion, the books to understand relationships is: The Verbally Abusive Relationship and Controlling People, both books by Patricia Evans. In many 'stories' in this book, what came up for me was Abusive Realtionship/Controlling People. There were so many 'stories' that I would categorize into 'abusive=put-downs, etc'; or controlling behavior=Mom trying to control daughter, visa versa. What about mutual respect, supporting each other in who they are? I didn't like the tone of: never good enough, if you do this then I will love you more. Patricia Evans books are a great teaching tool to learn and recognize abusive realtionships/controlling people. I have also attended seminars to learn about different personality/communication styles. The author did not indicate anything that she was knowledgable/had studied different styles.

Customer Reviews:
Don't waste your money.......2004-03-18
I bought this book a few years back and returned it to the store the very next day. It is full of errors. One of the most obvious is this...The author claims that Elvis' twin brother is buried at Graceland. Even the most casual fan knows that he is buried near Tupelo. I don't know what the problem is with David Stanley. He is incapable of telling the truth. Awhile back, he took part in a TV documentary, stating that Elvis committed suicide. His latest fabrication is really hilarious. According to Stanley, The Beatles knocked on Graceland's front door and asked to see Elvis. David and his mother, Dee, were decorating the Christmas tree and Dee refused to let them in because of their long hair.
The Beatles were only in Memphis on one occasion and that was in August, 1966, 4 months before Christmas. If you insist on lying, David, at the very least, do a little research so you can keep your lies consistent with historical facts.
indispensable for elvis fans.......2002-08-27
If you want to know everything about Elvis, then this is the book you need. It contains everything about his personal life, his music, his movies, his friends and family, his likes and dislikes and more.
It was compiled by his stepbrother David E. Stanley and it has a foreward by Lamar Fike, Elvis' best friend.
It also has an Elvis trivia quiz for the real fantics.
If you need to know those more obscure songs he sang, you'll find it in here.
Since this book was first published in '94, I can only spot two original albums missing from the "his music" section.
"For the asking" and "Tomorrow is a long" time were supposed to have been released in the early and late sixties respectively, but instead they were dropped in favour of soundtrack albums. A lot of the songs from these two albums were used as fillers on soundtrack albums of the sixties.
Now these two long lost albums have recently been released by RCA. So the only reason they're not mentioned in this book, is because they weren't commercially available at the time this book was published.
It does mention at the beginning of the music section "this anthology contains only records released commercially - no bootlegs or unauthorised material".
They released this book with an alternative front cover in '98 (in the uk anyway), and I'm assuming it's exactly the same. I might buy that book because I've looked at my book so many times, especially in the music section, that some of the pages have come out. This is probably due to flicking back and forth so much.
Buy this book! You won't believe the amount of info in it.

Taylor's anecdotal book shows Elvis as an excellent soldier and a respectful, sensitive, regular guy... --Kirkus Reviews
Customer Reviews:
A good soldier........1997-08-22
Written by Elvis' platoon commander in the 32nd
Armor, 3rd Armored Division, this book gives the
details of the famous singer's military service in
Germany in 1958-60.
In the heyday of the Evil Empire, with
ready armies glowering at each other over the Iron
Curtain, duty with a combat unit in Germany was no
joke. The training was rugged and continuous, and
our troops had to be ready to sacrifice themselves
in the early stages of any projected conflict. This
was a place for men, not sissy stars (such as some
others serving at the same time), and Elvis proved
himself worthy of the trust America placed in him.
By hard work, and serious diligence to duty, Private
Presley made himself into a formidable soldier, asking for no special favors and
earning his place among warriors.
This Elvis will always be due the respect of his
country.
