If you're looking at this, you probably know that this book is still a very valuable source of information on Jamaican orchids. This is a nice, amazingly inexpensive reprint of this essential work--ever so much cheaper and easier to get than finding one of the originals!The publisher has even taken care to print the captions accompanying the drawings on a separate leaf, rather than on the reverse of the drawings, so that there is no print showing through to mar the illustrations. Overall, a really nice job of reprinting. It would be even nicer if it were available in hardcover. A softcover, perfect bound book won't withstand too much use before it begins to show wear--but one could have it rebound.

I've been writing copy for 15 years and this is one of the books I used to get started. It is one that I keep referring to over and over. Between this book and Dan Kennedy's "Ultimate Sales Letter," you'll have everything you need in order to create multi-million dollar sales letters. I've made approximately $10 million in the last 5 years from my sales pieces. I don't give these two books all the credit but they were absolutely invaluable in my beginning as a novice copywriter years ago. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Exceptionally well-explained copywriting training.......2005-01-15

Mr Lewis has again written a classic - this book, especially starting with Ch 4 "How to Be a First-Rank Wordsmith", reveals the craft of writing compelling copy with remarkable clarity.

I underestimated this book at first; wish I'd read it a couple of years ago ... along w/Schwartz' "Breakthrough Advertising" and Lewis' other copywriting books, this is an absolute must-get. It really does dig deep into comparing the difference between credible, compelling copy and lukewarm copy that doesn't sell.

A must-get for everyone who write ads, including site salesletters - it's a scorcher!

Lewis is the undisputed master of his craft, and this small book does an excellent job of distilling and presenting the basics. As a writing teacher, I recommend it to all of my classes.

Off to a Good Start - puppy training.......2007-06-27

I have been involved in training dogs for over 40 years. This book
has some new ideas of handling old problems. Very easy reading and
a breath of fresh air toward training and problem solving. I enjoyed this
book tremendously and tried its recommendations on my newest puppy...a
very strong minded Great Dane!!

I used to think that I knew a lot about puppies, but I've learned more from this book than from 20 years of raising my own (and reading almost everything I could get my hands on). It's a sensible, readable, and good-natured book that has more information on a page than most books do in a chapter. The next time we have a litter, a copy of this book will accompany each puppy to its new home.

The book discusses principally the iconography and text of a mid 15th century copy of the mystical treatise Horloge de Sapience in the most sumptuously illuminated ms. known of the text. Each of the 36 illuminations is discussed in turn, with reference to their pictorial traditions, to the French textual matter and to a unique contemporary commentary, called the Declaration des hystoires. The Declaration is one of the earliest essays in the history of art criticism to survive. The study is rendered useful for teachers and scholars by an English translation of the text of the Declaration, which enables the reader to see the illustrations through the eyes of a 15th century critic.

One of my favorites.......2006-09-05

I got this book about 12yrs ago, when I was in 7th grade. I had to do a research paper on any famous person and, just to be different, I chose John Wayne. I didn't know much about him at the time. I'd seen a few of his movies on TV but that was it. I checked out several biographies on him from the library. In researching his life, I discovered what an incredible person he was, and I became a fan.
This is probably one of the most used books that I own. It's full of fun facts on the man and his movies. I'm in the process of collecting all of his movies on DVD and the list in the back of the book is extremely helpful. This is a great book for any John Wayne fan or for someone interested in classic movies and movie stars.

This book is broken into 6 section regarding the Duke. The first part is about his early years. Section 2 is full of trivia questions about the Duke for each 10 year era. Section 3 covers all about his movies, directors, and others that he worked with. It has some very good pictures. Section 4 covers items named or made of or in his likeness. Section 5 is about his television specials and more questions about him that you didn't know. Section 6 is about book written about him. Very informative and great Christmas present.

A Good Book About Ireland.......2003-05-15

I stumbled upon this book by accident, but I am glad I did. The subject matter sounded very interesting to me, so I gave it a chance, even though I'd never heard of the author before. I was plesently surprised.

Luck was a Stranger is William Coony's story about his life growing up in Ireland and then coming to America. It has some fascinating stuff in it. He had a rough childhood and even thought of joining the priesthood at one point. But instead he came to America, whre things seemed to go well, until he began suffering manic-depression. Some parts are funny, and some are very sad. I liked this book a lot and recommend it if you like books like Angela's Ashes (like me).

A Delightful Read!.......2003-05-14

William R. Cooney's memoir, LUCK WAS A STRANGER, is the delightful story of one man's life. From growing up in Ireland (where he also went to seminary school and almost became a priest) to his immigrating first to Canada and then to America, where he planned to make a fresh start of it, this is a fascinating story throughout. Cooney has an engrossing and entertaining style, which is often very funny. He certainly is quite the character! But there's also tragedy here as well. The full spectrum of human experience. I definitely recommend it. An enjoyable read!

A funny and moving Irish memoir.......2003-05-13

A funny and fascinating memior about growing up in Ireland during the 1930's, '40's and 1950's. Great anecdotes about Village life, and priests and being a kid in a little Irish town before there was tv and people rode on horses or on donkey and cart or bikes. A much more innocent and simple time. Then William Cooney immigrants to Canada, which in the '50's was a real frontier area and he goes through some harsh conditions and hits rock bottom until he makes it to America. Good stuff!

An Irishman finds, then loses the American Dream.......2003-05-11

A humorous but sometimes disturbing account of one man's journey through the Ireland of the 1930's to the 1950's. It's a no-holds-barred view of the educational system and the Catholic Church. It causes him to leave his country and emigrate to Canada and then eventually to America. He thought he found the American Dream there but manic-depression eventually cheated him of even that. There is a lot to laugh about in this biography but even more to think about. If you liked "Angela's Ashes" you will certainly enjoy this book.
