Good Start.......2004-06-22

This is a great book for planning your trip, what to see, etc. It's up to date, and the maps of these old cities are impeccable. What it doesn't give you is a sense of what Russia is like these days--something hard to get into words. For that, take a look at "The Chess Artist," by Hallman. Less maps, but a real sense of how weird Russia can get.

Of the various travel guides to the area I have consulted I particularly like this edition from Fodor's. The information is arranged in a logical way and is invaluable for planning a trip. And planning such a trip is very important even with the changes in today's society. Even for those not traveling this book can serve as a pleasant reminder of earlier visits. It deserves a place on the traveler's bookshelf.

Upon its initial publication in 1944, Pitchfork Ben Tillman was a signal event in the writing of modern South Carolina history. In a biography the Journal of Southern History called "definitive," Francis Butler Simkins studies one of the state's most controversial political leaders.

Benjamin Ryan Tillman (1847-1918) accomplished a political revolution in South Carolina when he defeated Governor Wade Hampton and the old guard Bourbons who had run the state since the end of Reconstruction. During his political ascendancy as governor and then United States Senator, Tillman introduced the state's dispensary system and shaped the state's 1895 constitution into a bulwark of white supremacy. Almost single-handedly Tillman established the iniquities of Jim Crow that countless other Southern demagogues would imitate. These "accomplishments" would plague the South and the nation until this day. Orville Vernon Burton's new introduction looks at both Tillman and author Francis Simkins as prime examples of southerners with tremendous talent but unsettling accomplishments.

A total waste.......2007-09-01

This "outline" consists of terms with definitions which would be okay if the terms matched the text or if the definitions matched ichthyology! In practically every chapter, you'll be given the term, "water column." In chapter 18 when you see the term "water column" yet one more time, you wonder where the information is about the minnow family that is supposed to be the subject of the chapter. In chapter 36, you see the term, "surface water" for the umpteenth time, but nothing about Arctic fishes or their adaptations. In summary, there is NO OUTLINE-FORM for ANYTHING!, just the same old elementary biology terms over and over again.

Be sure to note that the online access has NO additional information from the text, so DO NOt pay for online access--IT'S WORTHLESS TOO!

Only terms might be okay, except they don't match the text. For example the term "operculum" has several definitions; and in ichthyology it means the bony covering of a gill. But this book reports the definition of "operculum" to be: "The operculum is partly in the most posterior portion of the inferior frontal gyrus of the frontal lobe in the brain. One famous part of the operculum is Broca's area which plays an important role in converzation [sic] or speech production, reading and writing" (page 8). Clearly one can see that this text does not match my ichthyology texbook about fish! Speech reading, writing and speaking in fish? This is total rip-off!

Wrong Book.......2006-08-19

I had to return this item because it was incorrectly represented on the website. It is advertised as the book but, in reality, it is a study guide that it made to accompany the book. It is important that Amazon make that distinction on the website.

Very Accessible Introduction Even for a Non-Specialist.......2005-05-21

Moyle and Cech's text reads like two books, Cech's introduction to fish anatomy and Moyle's discussion of behavior and conservation (which is precisely how they use the text in their UC Davis classes). While first half of the book is much more technical than the second half, both are accessible to the non-specialist. I hadn't taken Biology since High School and was able to process most of the material with minimal referencing of secondary sources. Both authors are good writers who incorporate subtle humor and have the ability to convey some of their passion for fish making this a somewhat less dry text book than the general tendency. I learned an incredible amount from these pages and highly recommend this text.

Great book.......2005-03-03

This is really a great text book that covers everything from anatomy, behaviour and fish senses, passing through each fish order, until reach valiable aspects of fish comprehension, like zoogeography and aquatic ecology. Because it's scientific writing, the book is fullfilled with graphics and diagrams, so in the beginning the unaware reader should feel such level of difficulty, but it doesnt compromises at all the inner knowledge the book wants to pass.

THE text on the fishes..........2001-10-30

I am an avid fish fanatic. Moyle and Cech have produced what should be the greatest book of scientific interest on the subject. Seems like there is a but there? There is, this is a text book. If you are taking ichthyology, an upper level (sometimes graduate level) course on fishes this book will be your best friend. It is critical to understanding the largest group of vertebrates. It is well organized, fact filled and well cited. But, if you don't have Biology one and two, some chemistry, physiology and an introductory zoology course behind you it will lose you at the introduction. Even though I rate it high I would wait until a professor says you have to buy it.

An interesting couple who remained highly creative through the span of their careers. I first discovered their work as a child when I saw their brilliant film "Powers of 10". I intend on picking up more books of their work. Great reference for designers and architects.

Charles and Ray Eames were not only creative artistic talents, they were also commercial geniuses (just like George Nelson was). These two talents provided the secret for success that would reward them throughout their life. This book gives a good view about the creative talent of Charles and Ray Eames had.
But I would also suggest to purchase the book "Eames Design" by John Neuhart which I also thought was wonderful. If you like modern design I also suggest to visit the wonderful online archive about George Nelson at WWW.GEORGENELSON.ORG and if you like 1960's design also check the museum archive from Verner Panton at WWW.VERNERPANTON.COM

Words don't do justice to the work & imagination of Ray & Charles Eames! This is a beautiful book covering the creative minds of two of the best modern furniture designers. Filled with great pictures, & very complete text of their design & the many other things they created besides furniture.The Eames' are my biased favorite, if you love modern 50's furniture,fabric, & art you must have this book.They worked for the infamous Herman Miller company, who has reissued many of the Eames furniture pieces available again today.As creator of the modern molded fiberglass chair, & molded plywood, the Museaum Of Modern Art has Charles' chairs as Art, which they are & comfortable too!More than comparable to their Danish counterparts,this couple brought us sleek,smooth lined furniture that will take us into the space age for at least another fifty years!(check out A.I.-incredible backgrounds of modern furniture!)

This is a wonderful addition to any coffee table! I learned so much about this creative couple that I never knew before. The pictures are A+ & very well done. If you are a fan of Eames furniture, you cannot live without this book!!

Founders of a Profession.......2000-08-23

The Eamses were innovators in many fields such as Architecture, furniture design, film, etc. But to my mind their gretest acheivement was the definition of a new profession, 'Graphic Design', or as I beleive they called it, a 'Design Office'.

Up till then, there was 'Commercial Art', and 'Art Departments', and whatever styling was applied to an industrial product was done as an afterthought, and usually by an amateur.

After The Eamses, a new recognition that the design of appearances was a craft and a profession, and not just an art, was born.

This book demonstrates in many ways, how Ray and Charles Eames applied this and many other insights to the various fields of endeavor that they entered and changed forever.

Laugh & Cry, Well expressed book!.......2001-05-15

Emmanuelle Laborit writes her autobiography with such expressive detail. Some parts were hard to believe what the deaf have to go through to let themselves be heard for others. I recommend this book for any parent of a deaf child. What choices they have to make in the education of their child. There are so many different choices. Emmanuelle expains how her education was, she did nearly everything. When she started to learn sign language the world became more understanding to her.

Author recounts troubles of a person born deaf in france,compounded by the fact that sign language was outlawed there as "too sensual" until 1979. It's also a beautifully written book which captures the softness and gentle love of words often found in many english-as-a-second-language authors {except,for her,english is a third language!}.

I lost all my hearing suddenly in 1999. The whole world runs like a silent movie. I am excluded and don't understand what is going on around me anymore. This book offers insight,direction,hope. Maybe it will make people more sensitive to the cruel isolation of deafness.

This book caught my eye, because I really only read non-fiction. My interest in human development has been encouraged by my rather stilted childhood. This book is written with such candidness, that you are literally enveloped. I have laughed out loud, shed some tears, and loved every moment.

This is a realistic fable set on Cape Cod during WW II. Nineteen-year-old Louisa and her much younger brother Jeri are living as refugees on the Cape, their parents having been killed in England. A college professor, Mr. Smith, befriends them, falls in love with her, and learns through them about freedom and action. Bravest (and perhaps saddest) of all is Jeri, who is obsessed with his dead parents and builds a raft on which he attempts to sail back to England to fight the Germans (the Coast Guard rescues him before he gets too far). All the characters, but especially Louisa and Jeri, are a bit too stylized and typecast to ever be thought of as life and blood characters; Nathan uses them more as puppets conveying his wartime message of defeating an enemy of freedom than anything else. He is very good, however, at relating the slow but steady falling in love of Smith with Louisa, which is very tender and sensuous if not so passionate. It's easy to see how this simple love story combined with a call to action against Nazism would be appreciated by readers in 1942 when the book was published.
