Great reference for a great place to visit.......2005-04-07

I was fortunate enough to travel to Bali in 2003, it was so worth the jetlag and my LP was extremely helpful. I was lucky to stay with my friend at his home in Kerambitan during part of the trip and recommend visitors to try and go off the beaten path away from tourist centers if possible. I was traveling with a friend and since we are both students we were really interested in seeing sights and performances more than surfing and snorkeling. We managed to make it over a lot of the island including Lake Bratan, Lake Batur, Besakih, etc. etc. This book was helpful for navigating our guides and drivers to the places we were interested in seeing, as well as knowing exactly where we were heading. The cultural information is really good and really important to read before you go since Balinese culture is not only very interesting, but also really complex. Just be wary of being hassled by guides at Besakih, especially if you don't want one. But this book gives the ins and outs really well. I really prefer LP over other travel guides.

Good Reference Material/Starting Point.......2003-12-07

This is a good guidebook and fairly accurate. In a country like Indonesia, however, things change quickly so use this book as a reference not as a bible. Do you own research and talk to other travellers. Since the LP Bali is the default travellers' guide to this region, most of the restaurants and hotels covered are not the best values. Many get a steady stream of customers just because of a good review and never bother to maintain the facilities. The best deals require a lot of footwork and bargaining! Learning some bahasa indonesia always helps. The language section is adequate but the phrasebook is much better.

Nightlife is making a big comeback with the reopening of Paddy's Reloaded (did they really need the weapons terminology?) and the return of the young aussie crowd. Check Bounty for the college age crowd, Seminyak for the posh/club crowd.

You can also avoid the moneychangers altogether by going to the BCA ATMs. Look for the ones that give you bills in 100,000 Rp denominations. You get a more reasonable maximum with these machines.

The activities sections are good, particularly the surfing one. They do a poor job of covering Lombok however, if you are planning on heading out there for an extended stay, I would recommend the LP Indonesia. Be forewarned though, the constant soliciting outside of the Gili Islands in Lombok is extremely tiresome. For scuba, skip Gili altogether and head to Flores or Sulawesi (or even back to Bali's Menjangen). Many of the sections are blasted out and the whole place is overfished.

Finally, if you want to book a boat trip to the Komodo Islands, you have a couple options, the pricey Perama boats (better and more luxurious boats) or the cheapo independent boats (very basic converted fishing boats). The second option is very very basic - you sleep on dirty mats and the snorkeling equipment doesn't work. The food is pretty good though and you do get to all the major sites with no hassle. If you don't mind all this, you can book these boats pretty much anywhere on Lombok. The dragons are all worth it - we saw a couple fighting over a mate.

I am Balinese and live in Ubud.

As I am involved in tourism, I always keep a close eye on guide books to make sure that they do not give any incorrect information, either generally in respect of Bali, or in particular, in respect of my own restaurant, shops and accommodation in Ubud.

I am pleased to say that the text is remarkably accurate - as are the maps - which is not easy in the fast changing world we now live in.

The sections on Balinese culture are concise and very helpful to those visiting the island for the first time. Balinese culture is complicated and the visitor will benefit greatly from the explanations in this book.

There are also some nice photographs. Recommended.

Good intro but that is it.......2007-08-03

This is a good intro to give the basics of valuation for "old economy" businesses. It determines the valuation of companies based almost exclusively on their cash flow over the previous few years to the analysis. Unfortunately it ignores too many issues that play an extremely important role in valuation. For example, the quality, background, knowledge of management, the products the company manufactures, the markets for these products, macroeconomic conditions, intellectual property, market position (i.e., oligopolistic? Is entry/exit difficult in the industry?). Not one of these issues is even touched upon!!! The authors seem to be implying that these issues are irrelevant!! Only the cash flow over the previous few years applied forward (i.e., discounted for present value) matters according to the book!!! Perhaps this type of mentality explains why the overwhelming majority of mergers and acquistions fail!!!!

Nothing spectacular.......2006-04-03

Unfortunately, for all the name brand that this book conveys, I think the cover seems to be the most intriguing part. There are much better ways for book peddling and the fact that a firm such as McKinsey allowed their name on the title of a book for the sake of a few sales, boggles this readers mind. The subject matter seems to be along the lines of the bull session with all bull and no session. No actual quantitative analysis is used throughout the book, and if anything more than an encyclopedic definition is learned from this book, I would be astounded. Save some money and go search online for some basic books on beginning valuation. By the way, those giving 5 stars either can't read English very well or are shills for McKinsey.

Waste of Time.......2005-04-12

Any book by Damodaran is far better for business managers and portfolio managers.

For portfolio managers, estimating the cash-flows is a small part of the valuation process, the easiest. As the financial field and practice is becoming more and more quantitative, the cutting edge of asset pricing is to estimate time-varying risk premiums. Actually, almost 90% of variation in stock prices come from risk shifts, not from news on company cash-flows.

If you are interested in asset pricing i would suggest a mix of damodaran (20%) and "Asset Pricing" by John Cochrane (80%).

Good but bad Excel support.......2004-01-29

I liked this book. In Russia it is one of the most popular books on valuatuion. But when I can get the perfect excel support for Investment Valuation by Aswath Damodaran or good web support for Valuation Methods and Shareholder Value Creation by Pablo Fernandez, I ask the authors, why don't they put supporting material in disk? I think that the price of their sowtware ($94.50) is too high compairing with the book ($56 with discount), because there is no supporting materials - only 1 spreadsheet (from my point of view does not conform to McKinsey, as the leader of consulting business). I hope, for the 4-th edition we will have a good excel support.

User-unfriendliness at its best.......2003-01-11

Hmm I wonder if those giving this book five stars actually work for McKinsey. As a practioner, I don't know anyone in the industry who has actually read this book. It looks impressive on the bookshelf, but the content is anything but impressive. A lot of topics are covered, but each one only superficially and the writing is extremely dry and boring. I actually found reading this volume *painful*, and I'm supposed to like this stuff since I do it for a living! My advice for any potential buyer is read a few chapters first before you shell out for it.

Look, if you're looking for Basenji specific books, this is not one of them. It is informative, but not on Basenjis. This book would work for any breed rescue. I was disappointed because what I wanted was a book with all the pluses and minuses of living with a Basenji. This book contained none of that information. What it did have was great tips on rescuing and living with a rescued dog. The only thing "Basenji" about it was the title and the photos.

This is an excellent book about the care and ownership of an exotic breed, the basenji. These dogs clean themselves like dogs, shed tears when sad and yodel and laugh instead of bark. A beautiful, graceful and clean limbed dog, the barkless basenjis will find a place in the hearts of all who encounter them.

An ancient breed dating some 2,000 years, this African dog was the loved pet of Egyptian nobility and royalty. Basenjis appeared in ancient Egyptian artwork, e.g. paintings of the dogs and basenji shaped footstools. Even Anubis, the Egyptian God of the Underworld had a basenji head.

This book introduces all to this lovable, beautiful and intelligent hound. I like the way BRAT, a basenji rescue organization is mentioned throughout the book. Care, breeding and training the dog is well researched and well written.

This is an excellent tool for all, from the lay person to the well established basenji breeder and rescuer. Basenjis are beautiful, exotic dogs from their furrowed brows to their double curled tails. Independent and intelligent, this is one breed that is clearly distinct from all other breeds.

Basenji lovers will be made after reading this and for folks who are familiar with the breed and already love basenjis will cherish them all the more.

Thelma Wells has inspired many as a much-sought-after speaker for the Women of Faith. She also touches many in her teachings of prayer and discovery of God. In "God is Not Through with Me Yet" Thelma shares her stories of inspiration from her own life, and the lives she has touched along the way.

"God is Not Through with Me Yet" is broken into three sections. Part I is filled with stories of Thelma's life, her struggles, her songs, and her journey in guiding people to the gift of prayer.

Part II is dedicated to the great I AM. It is formatted as a Bible study, filled with scripture and journal activities designed to help the reader discover how I AM can change lives, heal pain, be the Provider, and the Banner.

Part III is dedicated to scripture and lessons "for your reflection." These mini-sermons are broken into sections to help guide the reader to the subject matter they wish to focus upon.

"God is Not Through with Me Yet" serves in many ways. Thelma's stories are an inspiration, her teachings allow the reader to better connect through prayer, and her chosen scriptures provide a foundation for reflection. What the book is lacking is Thelma's strong presence, touching voice, and general glow of energy. "God is Not Through with Me Yet" is a quick glimpse into Thelma's life, as well as a toolkit to be taken off the shelf again and again.

This lovely, hardcover book is only a sneak peek at a lovely woman who authored it. God Is Not Through With Me Yet is an easy, candid, inspiring read. It's almost as if Thelma is sitting across the table chatting with you, gently sharing her life lessons.

Often people pray for help, insight, healing, etc., One part of this book reveals some of the hindrances to prayer so that you can get God's answers.

I had the privilege of meeting Thelma in Indiana and she's a warm, welcoming, spiritually-dynamic lady.

Her book would make a good read or gift of encouragement to anyone who is going through tough times and needs to see the good that come out of bad.

Thelma Wells came from one of the worst situations I could imagine. Born to a partially paralyzed mother, her great-grandparents raised her. On the rare occasions she went to see her grandparents, her grandmother would lock her in the closet for hours. Thelma learned early on that the only way to survive that dark, scary closet is to sing. And sing she did.
