Significant prolems..........2006-06-08

This book covers a beautiful part of the world for hiking. While the verbal content is ok, the graphic content is very poor. The first problem is that there are too few maps, and those that are presented are not well done. Having good maps -- or even just ADEQUATE maps -- would have greatly improved this book.
The second significant problem is that while there are many illustrations, NONE of them are labled...! I can hardly believe it, but it's true. While none of us really need to be told "this is a bald eagle", there are many illustrations of flowers and trees that would have real meaning if the species were identified.
Too bad.
So that leaves us with the actual written content of the book, which is good. Unfortuately that can not stand on its own.

This book is probably the best historical fiction book for teens. It is page turnng and covers Elizabeth's life and emotions very well. It is a great page-turner, and is one of the best historical fictions book I've ever read in my life. Go Carolyn meyer!

Beware.......2007-03-15

Once her father died, no one was there to protect Elizabeth from the court and her older sister, Queen Mary. After the King of England, her father, died, her younger brother, Edward VI of age of 9, became King. Some schemes are created to change the thorn inheritance. After living through that, she becomes more aware of what she does so nothing turns up again. Edward becomes very sick and died. To understand the next event you must know that Elizabeth and Mary have never been on good terms. When Mary became Queen it became worse. The supporters of Elizabeth revolted against Queen Mary; this started the burning of the Heretics. Elizabeth was watched like a hawk until her sister's death. After that she became Queen. Beware, Princess Elizabeth is a wonderful book and worth reading.

One reason why I liked this book was because it was full of suspense. One example is when Elizabeth was investigated for the marriage against the King's order. She was kept at her home with no one but an investigator and his wife. They watched her closely and waited to be found guilty. Another is when Queen Mary sent her to the tower for the uprising of the supporters of Elizabeth. She stayed there for quit along time until she was exiled to a castle far away and left there under watch of guards. The last reason was because she didn't commit to the Catholic faith, which was against her beliefs. Because Mary was burning all the Heretics, or people who wouldn't hear Mass, Elizabeth had to be on her guard so she wouldn't be caught hearing Mass without her whole heart.

The second reason is because the author writes splendidly. One example is when she describes the places and people with all the five senses. In the book when Elizabeth takes up resident in a drafty castle all winter long. The author describes the place as drafty, smelly, cold, and run-down. Another example was when the author described Elizabeth's feelings about her step-mother's husband, who also had feelings to Elizabeth. The last example was when Elizabeth was told she is Queen. The author described Elizabeth's joy at finding the news.

The last reason why this book is so good is because of the interesting characters in this book. Although all the characters really lived, some of the things they did were different. For example, Queen Catherine, the King's last wife, had loved a man before she was forced to marry the King. After the death of the King, Catherine married this man with out waiting in respect for the dead. Another interesting character is Elizabeth's sister, Mary. Mary had a hard life when Elizabeth was little, so she was never very kind. Mary grew up on the Catholic faith and wanted England to turn to their former faith. When the people didn't do as she said, she burned them; therefore she got the name Bloody Mary. The last person is Elizabeth. Elizabeth is my favorite Queen, out of the few I've read. She had to go through many trials in her life and faced death several times. In the book, she was locked in the Tower of London and almost executed. She also lived through several pandemics and the reign of Bloody Mary. Over all I think she lived a very interesting life.

The best part about this book was all the obstacles Elizabeth had to survive. An example from the book was when her beloved brother started to become more like a tyrant to her instead of the loving brother who once loved her. Another was when Mary threw Elizabeth into the Tower of London on false accusations. Elizabeth had to be clever to out smart her sister and the court. This book is now one of my favorite books.

Great Story.......2006-11-14

Perhaps one of the most fasincating queens of all time. Hardly anyone else goes through as much as Elizabeth did on her way to being queen and
that's why she'll always be my favorite. This book goes through the death of her father she goes to live with her stepmother and new husband when Elizabeth learns important lessons when she finds herself in a scandle with her stepmother's new husband. Things get worse for her when her brother dies and Mary becomes queen following the short reign of Jane and Elizabeth knows Mary wants her dead and is constantly on guard to keep that from happening but still finds herself in the Tower. Carolyn Meyer protrays Elizabeth's fears at that point when Elizabeth surely thought she was going to die. I recommend this book for everyone who's a fan of Elizabeth I's.

King Henry the 8th dies leaving Edward the throne. Edward dies after 6 years of ruling. Edward leaves the throne to Jane Dudley (that's another story called 9 days a queen.) Jane knows that Mary is the rightful ruler of Englang but is forced to be queen. Most of England wanted mary as Queen so to prevent a rebellion they took the throne from Jane and gave it to Mary after nine days of rule. Mary had Jane and her husband beheaded. Elizabeth has many spies watching her every move to prevent he from causing an rebellion. Elizabeth is sent to the same tower as her mother was sent to many years ago and beheaded. will she have the same fate as her mother read the book and find out. i'm bad at writting so the book is way better than its sounds.

Great second installment, good portrayal of young Elizabeth I.......2006-04-19

Young Elizabeth Tudor goes through a great deal in her journey to become Queen of England. She is Henry VIII's second daughter, one who is pampered and well cared for when she's a child and then is ignored and shunned by her father after he has his second wife and Elizabeth's mother, Anne Boleyn, beheaded for supposedly cheating on him. He wants an heir and he achieves this with his third wife who births (and dies as a result) young Edward who will precede his father to the thrown. During all of this, Elizabeth has endured her sister Mary, who hates her for being Anne Boleyn's daughter. However, they reach some sort of truce after Henry VIII dies and Edward is crowned. But when the young king dies and Mary is crowned queen, all hell breaks loose. Mary wants Elizabeth out of the way and she does just about everything to keep her from being the next queen. There are various twists throughout the novel.

This royal family has fascinated me and I am enjoying Meyer's fictional account of these women. She portrays Elizabeth as a young woman who had to pay her dues to obtain her reign in England. The novel doesn't follow the biographical flow as much as in Mary, Bloody Mary, but a fictional account is what I look for when reading these books, and Meyer does a fine job creating a back story for these characters. The political intrigue is interesting. Mary Tudor is portrayed as a cruel, fierce queen who orders execution for things as simple as people following another religion other than her own. From reading the biographies in encyclopedias, I always got the impression that she and Elizabeth were at odds with each other, which is why it isn't surprising that this plot is centered on Mary's attempt to keep Elizabeth from taking over the reigns of England. But Elizabeth is portrayed as a fighter who won't stop until she gets her rightful place as Queen of England. I enjoyed this second installment of the Young Royals book. It is fun and entertaining as well as insightful and enlightening. I look forward to reading Anne Boleyn's story in Doomed Queen Anne.

I was under the impression that this was a paperback version of the book but instead it was a summary of the book. It gave a lot of generalities but was not specific at all. If you are looking for a "Cliff's Notes" version then this book will probably serve the purpose. If you want specifics, then you need to buy the hard cover book.

Stop looking for magic bullets.......2007-06-08

While Brad Smart offers some good advice for the hiring manager, we must keep in mind that the purpose of TogGrading is to make money for, uh, Brad Smart. It is every hiring manager's responsibility to select the best candidate for a position. Some instinctively do a good job at this, while others are simply clueless. Dr. Smart presents his methodology with a zen-like religious furvor. He insists that if everyone in the organization adopts his methodology and becomes a zealot, the organization will become wildly successful. Isn't pretty to think so. My company jumped on the TogGrading bandwagon three years ago, because we had high turnover in a two departments. Now our hiring process is adruous, time-consuming and expensive. The results? Those managers who had low turnover rates still have low turnover rates. Those who had high turnover rates still have high turnover rates. The bottom line: TopGrading doesn't work any better than any other of the various magic bullet methods hawked to managers over the years. There is no one-size-fits-all methodology for selecting top performers. If your company is failing at attracting and retaining "A players" you'd do better to carefully examine your corporate culture than to jump on the latest fad method. If one manager excels at hiring and retaining good employees, allow him to mentor the managers who don't. This is cheaper and far more effective than turning your HR process upside down and hoping for a miracle cure.

Be objective with your experiences.......2007-03-15

I have been through interview processes with multi-billion dollar firms that were surprisingly casual and not as "hard-hitting" as I would expect. From observing others and recognizing my own experiences and shortcomings, you can tell who are "C" and "A" players. This does not make the "C" player a bad person. Michael Jordan was a "C" in minor league baseball.

Just because someone is a CEO of a Fortune 500 company does not make that same person infalliable. Sometimes CEOs do things that make us scratch our heads, and subsequent events prove us right. (William McCormack at CMS Energy being one.)

Other CEOs bring great growth and enhanced shareholder value. They are worth the big bucks. How much would you pay to someone who increased your company's value by $1 billion?

I was so impressed with this book that I have begun to implement these principles into my suppliers for our company's procurement chain. I'm constructing my own "CIDS" interview, and will seek to have "A" suppliers, removing the "C"s.

The anecdote in the book says it best. A firm will invest a lot of time, effort and energy in buying a $500,000 piece of equipment. But hiring an employee whose impact on the firm can be millions of dollars? "Ah, he interviewed well, so we'll hire him."

Kick the tires during the interview phase. Talk to others for "scuttlebutt". Invest the time up front for big pay-offs later.

Read This Book Today.......2007-03-15

There are many books on the market focused on interviewing techniques and talent selection. Topgrading is the best in this category and I have read many of them. The reason why it is the best is that it takes the reader past "what to do" and teaches them "how to do it". If you are someone like me, looking for a way to hire and coach A players right now, this is the book for you.

The New England guide is so accurate and detailed that we know ahead of time which room to reserve, how it will be decorated, and even what we can expect for breakfast. It is clear that the authors visit every place they review-their insights and perspectives are that personal. Every place we've stayed has been a treasure. Useful but not comprehensive.......2000-05-11

Helpful descriptions and paw ratings of dog-friendly hotels in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. However, they omit many of the smaller cities, and for the cities they do list it would be nice if there was a list of hotels that didn't accept dogs so you'd know they checked them. 'Doing the Northwest with your Pooch' lists many more hotels and many more cities (just no descriptions). We recommend 'Pets Welcome' as a useful additional cross-reference that is worth its price because of its hotel descriptions, but do not rely on this book exclusively. The authors donate 5% of book proceeds to the Humane Society of the United States.

Should Be Filed Under Fiction.......2000-03-03

Having tried three of the "recommendations" and living close to a fourth, I can only say this work is more fantasy than fact. We were turned away from one "pet-friendly" place when they found out that our small Boston Terrier was not a cat.

Put the "travel" back in travel writing.......1999-03-29

I bought Pets Welcome, but after using it I have the impression that the authors didn't travel at all to write it. We traveled to inns that didn't reflect the descriptions at all. The Fish's reviews are essentially taken from the brochures, with perhaps one or two additional facts. I can read a brochure or check a web site for the innkeeper's perspectives, but I depend on travel guides for firsthand experiences of the authors. I was dissapointed with Pets Welcome guide because it merely pointed me in the right direction without giving me any insight.

This book suffers from the flaw of being written in the painfully florid style of pr travel pieces. I am also a little suspicious that the writers do not have a critical word about a single one of these inns, hotels and motels that take dogs. Did they actually go to any of them?? I have my doubts. Aware of at least one gross factual error -- in review of a B&B in Chapel Hill, NC, it suggests that you visit the "nearby" Great Smoky Mountins, which are at least three hours' drive away. I have not actually tried to go to any of the listed places with my dog, so I cannot say if the work is entirely fictional. However, I think this book is an excellent concept and look forward to seeing better editing and fact-checking in future editions.

Five Woofs for On the Road Again.......1999-03-19

We have always enjoyed all of the regional On the Road Again with Man's Best Friend guides, and bought the Southwest version last summer for a trip to Santa Fe and Taos. We had trouble choosing between the 15 inns and B&Bs in Santa Fe - they all sounded wonderful. We stayed in a lovely pueblo style inn where each day our dog was presented an afternoon treat, while we enjoyed tea and freshly baked sweets. We used the book to find out where to hike with our dog, or take her in and around town. We loved traveling through New Mexico with our dog, but wouldn't have attempted it without this terrific book!

Not bad if you like incomplete checklists..........2005-07-20

I just recently purchased this book off of Amazon, and once I started going through it, I quickly became disappointed. I have a very small stack of about 20 Bob Feller cards, and a few of them were not even listed, so I'm sure that there are several other Feller cards that are missing. I bought this book because I wanted to collect every Bob Feller card ever made, and now I am right back where I started - without a complete Bob Feller checklist. Also, though no fault of the author's, this book only goes up through 1999, so nothing from 2000-present will be listed, and the prices listed for each card are sure to be a little out of date.

The good things about this book are that every major player you may want to collect will be listed, and they are in alphabetical order for easy reference.

Bottom line: Nice book if you just want to collect a handful of your favorite player's cards, but if you're going for a complete collection, I can't recommend it.

Don't let their price be your guide!.......2000-03-27

Sports Collector's Digest (SCD) has been the authority on the sports card hobby for years. Like most of their previous publications, this one's full of good solid information and it includes a few photographs of key cards; however, anyone thinking of buying this book to use as a price guide should keep in mind that this was published in October of 1999 and is therefore not an up to date representation of current sports card prices. Depending on the player and issue, sports card prices can change dramatically in a very short period of time. If you're strictly looking for a price guide, then I suggest you pick up the most current issue of a monthly price guide magazine which will have pricing information that more accurately reflects the current market. This guide will put you in the "ballpark" in terms of pricing, but I recommend it more for research and information than for accurate pricing. Overall, a useful read for anyone interested in sports cards.

Does the author have a secret message for his readers?.......1998-09-27

The pictures in this book are great. A must-see for any Elvis fan. It includes a timeline of the King's life, and a discography and filmography from "the rebel years." I enjoyed the photographs very much; they give a lot of insight into the King's early performances, although Mr. Bangs' introductary essay is so crude that I cannot imagine his reason (other than for a financial profit) for compiling these photos. The captions for the pictures are informative and overall, this book is good, if you don't mind the author's disrespect toward his subject.

This is one of those satisfying recipe books that includes the reader in. The dialogue is chatty and warm and the recipes all sound delicious. Just as her original Baking Book is. A winner !

Quantity over quality . . . .......2007-01-10

I'll give her credit, Rosie has a large selection of recipes to choose from, but the basic layout of this cookbook is not ideal, and her measurements are a bit freaky. You'll see 1 cup + 6 tablespoons of flour(isn't that a third of a cup?) Or 12 tablespoons of butter, or 6 tablespoons of milk . . . Again, couldn't that be converted to something more mainstream, like liquid ounces? And the recipes are frequently not all on one page, so you get to flip back and forth from the ingredients to the directions. Her writing is very chatty and comforting, but the recipies I've tried (and there have been several) have only been OK - not memorable.

I enjoy this book as much as I do the baking book. I have never had a cookbook with so many 5* recipes. The recipe people request the most is the Baker's Best Snickerdoodles. Unbeatable.

This Is The Best Cookie Book Ever!!!!!.......2005-12-23

I couldn't beleive how good the cookies are in this book. She is so on the money with every single one. The one that really rocks are the Fudgie Wudgies cookies. Every time I make these, people want more. The 1st time i tasted one fresh out of the oven. I thougth the top of my head was going to come off. I can't wait for her to come out with another cook book. I bought her cake cook book aswell. And that is just as good as the cookie cook book.

This is a REAL cookbook!.......2005-04-02

Every young bride should start with a cookbook as good as this one! The cookbooks that use 'quick' items, or 'premixed' items are not really for cooks that enjoy the entire process of making recipes. If you enjoy the process of really cooking, this book is for you! I am an exprienced cook, I don't really need all the detail, but it is much appreciated anyway. I don't know everything there is to know, the amount of time to stir, cook, and what the item looks like after you bake it are all very helpful. There are not pictures in this book, but I am having no problem finding recipes to make. Each one has been better than good. The brownies! UGH! They are to die for, they have started me on a brownie baking frenzy. All I can say is thank you so much for making the 2 cookbooks. I am so glad I do not live close to the bakery that she owns, I would not be able to keep away. I bought Kitchen Aid Mixers for several brides that I knew, it is my firm belief that all young brides should own one, if I would have known about this book, they would have gotten it, also. cindy
