4 out of 5 stars Being first doesn't win the race.......2006-05-15

The book summarizes french colonization between Maine and Hudson Bay. The question I was interested in was, why were the French colonies, which supported exploration as far as the west coast centuries before Lewis and Clark, utterly unable to compete with the British economically or demographically by the time of the French-Indian War? The book offered insight:

      1) Territory- Quebec was not nearly as self sustaining as the colonies south. The economy was very one way- Canadians produced furs and almost nothing else. The terrain and weather severely limited what could be done.

      2) Indians- I may be wrong, but I don't think the English had the same problems with Iriquois that plagued Canada. The Iriquois were explicitly allied with the English during the 17th century. The indians would later switch allegiance, but by that time demographics made them irrelevant.

      3) Character of the Immigrants- Seems like the Frenchmen that came over were on a basic level anti-social. Two icons:

The coreur, who went off alone into the woods to live like an indian and bring back furs once a year. The french have always had a land fetish, this was an extreme manifestation.

The swindler/trader, who came to get rich off the market between Europe and the coreur.

In short, these were not families that came over to start a new life, but rather individuals (men) who came to make a quick buck or hit the sticks.

Consider the women- the King of France had to send ships full of women to get the colony rolling, almost certainly not there by choice. I don't recall anything even remotely like that in English colonies.

So in summary, the lopsided environment attracted people not really interested in the long term future of the colonies (the first response of every governor who hit a problem was to request transfer back to France- New France was NOT a desirable place to be for it's decision makers), so naturally they made bad decisions. That, combined with a powerful and hostile indian neighbor (the Iriquois) prevented the colony from becoming truly self sustaining. The people there were tough enough to survive, but lacked the resources to grow, and that made all the difference compared to the English.

      1 out of 5 stars very underwhelming.......2005-06-15

I bought this book since it had the perfect-sounding title. When I got it home and started thumbing through it, i realized it has some glaring omissions. For example, in the list of options for business structure, it omits LLC. Also it barely glosses over the arduous process for getting a merchant account to be able to accept credit cards. These are both very important issues that should be addressed!!

4 out of 5 stars Good tips and insight, but not applicable to all.......2004-02-24

Read this book from the library as ongoing market research. The book hit on many good points for where to begin, following effectiveness, etc., but felt somewhat outdated in other parts - the author places a lot of emphasis on using the fax versus email/online. Also would have liked to see more about sending mail for different types of services & products.

We are implementing some of the author's ideas at Anchor Digital - we'll be using the same messages found at anchordigital.com and putting them into direct mail pieces. Hopefully they will have the same effectiveness as the ones on the website.

I recommend this book as part of research for mail-order businesses, but be sure to include other, more varied books as well.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Great Ideas.......2002-08-15

How to Start a Home-Based Mail-Order Business is, at its core, a how-to. But, it is not satisfied with providing the basic bones and goes on to provide excellent elaboration and detail that helps answer questions. Well-written and researched. It covers all the basics--marketing, sales, promotion, etc, without getting bogged down into details that could lead Fiumara away from her basic thrust of the book. Given how much today's world relies on the Internet, her chapter on Success in Cyberspace is especially helpful. While it has its own chapter, using the Internet to promote your business is so critical that I would recommend Guerilla PR: Wired, which covers that same subject far more in-depth.

      5 out of 5 stars Step-By-Step Insider Information.......2002-07-30

Most books on starting a mail order business are written by men who claim you can make $100,000 or more at home. This book is different.

How To Start a Home-Based Mail Order Business is written by a woman who gives you all the information you need to succeed in a mail order business -- but without all the bull. Georganne Fiumara takes you by the hand in the very first chapter and leads you to success, step-by-step. Thanks to the author, my home business dream has come true.

I especially appreciated the chapter called Success In Cyberspace because most successful mail order businesses now include web promotion. The author's web site, HomeWorkingMom.com, shows that she knows what she is talking about.

I took her advice and put my business online at MoneyandShopping.com and have not looked back since.

If you are looking for a straight-forward, insider's guide to mail order, this is the book to buy.

1 out of 5 stars More of the same old stuff..........2001-12-18

After so many books about Streisand, it takes an entirely new perspective on her life and career to make a new one interesting to a fan of hers. This book is simply a rehashing of the same old stories and anecdotes, and frankly not very well written compared to many of the other available titles on Barbra.

Reverse chronology...barely readable text. So many other books have covered her life better. This is a woman whose life demands context and interpretation...not just repeating every single news story ever printed in the Los Angeles Times.

this is great. i love the way it focuses on her life in acting as well as singing. it's very fascinating about the struggle she had to go through to be in funny girl on screen and the parts about walter matteau is great too! a must for those who love barbra.

What really happened to a soldier in the infamous Maori battalion, killed in the battle for Crete during World War II? And why did the soldier’s family place a curse on O’Dwyer, the officer who was his commander at the time he died? Half a century later two Oxford dons, Newall and Winterstoke, attend the funeral of their colleague O’Dwyer, an expatriate New Zealander. After the ceremony, Newall reveals to Winterstoke the story of the curse placed on O’Dwyer during the war and, in the days that follow, he continues the tales of O’Dwyer and his ‘cursed’ life. Slowly the stories of Newall, another New Zealander in self-enforced exile, and of Winterstoke are also revealed in Stead’s complex and subtle narrative which shifts across time and space from New Zealand to Oxford to Croatia and to Crete at the time of the allied defeat there.

                      Book Description

Filled with enlightening first-person accounts, Talking About Therapy tells us why patients sought therapy, what they think of the therapists to whom they entrusted their well-being, and whether the treatment was worth the struggle, the emotional pain, and the money. Through stories that are touching, sometimes shocking, and always candid, readers will learn how patients responded to a wide range of treatment, including: Freudian and neo-Freudian psychoanalysis, Jungian analytic psychology, group psychotherapy, Reichian therapy, and newer "alternative" approaches. Whether portraying their therapeutic experience as "a scam" or "a liberation," or something in-between, the feelings shared by these forthright individuals will be fascinating to patients, potential patients, their families, and mental health professionals. Talking About Therapy will also help therapists and their clients see beyond the individual context of treatment. The authors have organized their work by the decade in which each interview subject entered treatment (1940s to the present day), and this narrative framework reveals much about the evolution of the mental helth field in the last half century. From the heyday of Freudian psychoanalysis, through the tumult of the Vietnam War, feminism and gay activism, to our current era of street drugs, and the prevalence of anti-depressants, the impact of therapy on the lives of the individuals in this amazing book is conveyed directly and dramatically, with unflinching honesty.

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars the part that actually talked about therapy was excellent.......2001-09-01

This book of vignettes about people's experiences in and opinions about their own therapies was excellent...truly informative. As a therapist myself, I found it appealing and worth the read, especially with the people who were in therapy in the forties and fifties, because I don't hear enough of that perspective. I also liked the range of people and therapy types the book covered...though granted, it only covered a certain portion of those in therapy (i.e. entirely lacking any racially minority voices, said nothing about purely supportive therapy, didn't touch all the patients whose Medicaid pays for their therapy...).

The book's main drawback, however, was that its authors tried to make it into something it really wasn't... They tried to make it into a textbook or reference book of sorts, something more than just a collection of vignettes. They (ironically, like so many therapists) had to get in their own two cents constantly, and did it by fleshing everything out with theory, explanations, long-winded chapter and vignette introductions, summaries, recaps, expansions on themes, tepid historical insights...PURE DULLNESS, but moreso, unnecessary. Once I realized where the real power of the book lay, I just skipped over everything the authors had to say (or almost everything...at times they said an interesting thing or two about a famous therapist) and read the words of the people themselves, and worth it they were!

One last criticism: the authors feigned objectivity in describing different schools of therapy, but time and time again their stilted points of view seeped through. One example I can think of offhand was their explanation for why psychoanalysts are slow "to endorse" psychotropic medications: they said it was "because some of their patients have progressed without them and [because of their sometimes intolerable] side effects." While these may both be perfectly true reasons, they fail to mention the main reason I MYSELF don't endorse them - because, as Alice Miller says (and interestingly, her book Drama of the Gifted Child is mentioned glowingly several times in various vignettes), medications reduce symptoms, and symptoms provide the clue that allows people to trace emotionally their own traumas back into their childhoods...and thus heal. Medication lops off the symptom, gives temporary relief, but prevents deeper healing!
