Mistletoe occurrence, host condition and habitat variables were assessed in reserves throughout the Mount Lofty Ranges, South Australia, to: (1) document the presence and abundance of box mistletoe Amyema miquelii in Eucalyptus woodlands; (2) compare the condition of pink gums Eucalyptus fasciculosa with and without box mistletoe; and (3) investigate correlations between box mistletoe presence, landscape features and individual pink gum tree features. Box mistletoe frequency was highest on pink gums, with 28% of trees across the study area hosting at least one box mistletoe, and 5% hosting at least five. Logistic regression models indicated that woodland type was more influential than other landscape features such as fragmentation and edge effects in determining mistletoe presence. Individual pink gums with less foliage cover surrounding their canopy were more likely to host box mistletoe. The condition of pink gums was poor for infected (58% canopy dieback) and uninfected trees (43%) across all size classes, and there was no relationship between mistletoe abundance or presence and canopy dieback. Further investigations are required to determine why pink gums are more susceptible to box mistletoe proliferations than other woodland types.

The title is very misleading. If you are looking for a guide to snorkeling in the USVI, look elseware. The space devoted to snorkeling involves approximently five sentences. I got more information from my Fodor's!

In question-and-answer style, the author describes the daily life of the Sioux before and after the coming of the white man. They'll discover what happened to someone who broke the rules of a tribe, what was considered the bravest thing a Sioux Indian could do, and the ritual ceremonies at which children were accepted as adults.

In a final section the author explains what is happening to these Indians today.

A terrible book for children - here's why:.......2007-06-22

This type of book lacks significant detail on the subject it deals with, in this case its the Sioux Indians of the Wild Frontier. Any child given this book is going to be sent off on a "wild goose chase" in terms of understanding these Indians, their habits, and their activities in the pre-reservation era.
To be honest, this sort of book is so slanted and lacking, that it equals the motion picture "Dances With Wolves" in terms of just how misleading its information really is. Children lacking a basic understanding of this continent's early history will get a highly distorted, Politically Correct, and totally false image of the Indians they are attempting to learn about.
For a much better, entirely REALISTIC and FACT-FILLED look into Frontier history, your children should read The Kiowas (Civilization of the American Indian Series), and Life Among the Apaches (Bison Book) and also Nine Years Among the Indians, 1870-1879: The Story of the Captivity and Life of a Texan Among the Indians, as well as Three Years Among the Comanches: The Narrative of Nelson Lee, the Texas Ranger. And if they are specifically interested in the Sioux, they shouldn't miss Scalp Dance: Indian Warfare on the High Plains, 1865-1879
These books will offer your children FACTS not sanitized fiction concerning the American Indian of yesteryear. They will provide a knowledge of Frontier history which will allow any child to bypass ALL Politically Correct dogma with ease and grasp the reality behind what happened during the early part of this continent's settling and civilizing.
However, it is unfortunate that all the "warm-fuzzy" "Dances With Wolves" enthusiasts seem to gravitate toward this sort of literature, which is far from containing anything nearly realistic or balanced in terms of information. But now you know the antidote - just read the titles I've recommended here and prepare yourself and your children for enlightenment.

This book could tell you the answers or doubts about the Sioux indians.It tells you in the the point as if you lived with the Sioux indians.I really like this book because it really helps out in projects you need to research.

An Indispensable Classic that will be of interest to anyone interested in how the"modern" world has come about.

A Classic in the Field of Social and Labor History.......2003-12-28

Well, it took me darn near a month to finish this monster (800+ pages) of a book. Can't say I regret the experience, though. Truly , this is a masterpiece, both in terms of its substance and its approach. I could quite easily write more then a thousand words on this book, but hey, this is Amazon, right?

Before I begin, I would like to state up front that I am not a historian or a graduate student of history. Please forgive me if my review contains incorrect statements.

"The Making of the English Working Class" is precisely what its (awkward) title describes: a history of the developments leading to the emergence of the modern industrial working class in England (and Scotland, sort of. Wales and Ireland are excluded, although Irish immigrants living in England to figure in some parts of the book). The time period covered is roughly the 1790's to the 1840's. Thompson starts with a description of "Dissent", discusses the influence of the French Revolution on that tradition (Dissent), spends a good chunk of the book describing the effect of the industrial revolution on the lives and lifestyles of the workers in industrial England, and then spends an equal amount of time describing the reaction of the workers and their leaders to this adjustment in circumstances.

Along the way, Thompson takes a hatchet to historians on the left, right, and center. His section on the change in circumstances of the workers in England is most critical of writers like F.A. Hayek, i.e. those writers who try to say that the industrial revolution "wasn't that bad" or "wasn't bad at all" for the workers. He devotes a good part of Part II of the book to attacking the methods of statistical or economic history. His preference is to use documentary evidence of the time. In this way, the book (published in the 60's) is a forerunner of historical "postmodernism"(Oh, please forgive me for the term), where authors abandon "objective" evidence (economic statistics) in favor of "subjective" evidence (pamphlets, letters and newspapers).

I guess that's hardly a revolutinary arguement now-a-day, but back then, I can hardly imagine.
His section on the reaction of workers to the industrial revolution is rather more critical to historians of the left and center, who sought to discount the violence associated with the Luddite movement as somehow unrepresentative of the working class movement in England. Thompson's revisionist history of the Luddite movement is a tour de force. Really, it's breathtaking.

In my opinion, the book kind of loses steam after that section. Thompson has some harsh words for the London based "leaders" of the workers movement, and I felt his discussion of Owenism left too much to the readers imagination. I don't suppose this book was meant for someone with only a loose grounding in English history, but none the less, that's what I have, so I'm just stuck.

To the extent that I have anything critical to say about this book, it's that Thompson at times presupposes a graduate level education in English history. I haven't read AJP Taylor or Hayek or any of the other authors Thompson attacks. IN the end, though, I felt like it didn't hurt my enjoyment of this book. I would highly recommend it, although you should set aside a good chunk of time to make your way from beginning to end.

More on the Peter Smith edition of E.P. Thompson.......2002-12-02

One of America's best small independent publishing houses is---Peter Smith of Gloucester, Massachusetts! The individual's name is also the name of the company, which explains the incorrect ID by the earlier reviewer.

For many years Peter Smith (man & company) has provided reprints of essential scholarly and other works in affordable hardcover editions. The only way to continue this helpful service is by keeping production costs low, which occasionally leads to the regrettable results detailed below. The resulting profit margins are too low to interest the goliaths of the book world, but scholars and other customers (not to mention libraries with tight acquisition budgets) are profoundly grateful for what is perhaps as much a public service as a business decision. Why not order their catalog and give 'em some much-needed business? You'll probably spot other worthwhile classics....For instance, my library includes James Malin, "Grassland of North America" and Wesley Frank Craven, "Soil Exhaustion as a Factor in the Agricultural History of Virginia & Maryland," two fine early environmental histories that are virtually impossible to find apart from Peter Smith's editions.

I hope this isn't being too hard on the earlier reviewer, but I thought the matter needed clarification. The earlier reviewer's disappointment surely reflects his admiration for EP Thompson's work, which I certainly share---it's arguably the greatest history of the 20th century.

Thompson's book is THE ground-breaking work of social history for our century, pioneering in the "history of everyday life" (also taken up by Foucault, de Certeau, Davis, etc.); the history of working people; and the consideration of culture in the past. Unlike most other social history it is also brilliantly written and accessible. Buy it.

The hardback of the Making.......2001-08-13

Buyers beware of the hardback version of E. P Thompson's classic work "The Making of the English Working Class". Firstly, note that the hardback is a 1966 edition. This means that is does not have Thompson's 1968 postscript, nor his 1980 preface (it probably also misses the author's 1968 revisions, but I have not checked this). Secondly, this is not an organically produced hardback: the picture on the cover is glued on, and the spine does not have the author's name (instead, it has the name "Peter Smith" - so who the hell is Peter Smith?). All in all, a shocker for purists, or any serious scholar, made all the worse for the magnificence of the original.

A lot of talking but not with the animals........2001-12-23

The title was interesting and a grabber as I am working in animal healing/communication and wished to learn more from someone claiming they knew how to do this. I had hoped this book would assist in that process with new information. I was very disappointed as there was only minimal referrals to how to do this--only a few sentences in all. Most of the book focused on many different animals, what their human companions had done or not done and what she did, many times referring to things heard in vet school that most of the lay public would have no knowledge of--perhaps it will educate someone on these aspects, just not on the communication. This did not give a very good model on how to facilitate this process and obtain accurate results. More information really needed to be included for this to be considered a book dealing with animal communication for someone serious about including this skill in working with their animal companions. It has a good title, just no real content on the subject saddly. For the serious student there are many other books that work much better than this one.

Intrigued by the title and encouraged by the rave reviews, I was not prepared for my level of disappointment with this book. It struck me that Dr. Pasten was so busy thinking of a rejoinder to everyone that I found it hard to believe she actually listened to what the animals were saying to her. Or perhaps she just related better to animals. I found her sense of humor appallingly offensive for a book of this nature. I kept waiting for her to NOT have a smart comment at the end of each story which I'm sure was meant to be humorous but was often just silly. Please, save your money.

it was a really interesting book to read and is a great introduction for anyone interested in alternative animal medicine it had some good general points about communicating with animals and brought up some issues that you would have never thought of.

The Tarantula Whisperer brought some tears and plenty of joy and laughter to me. I got the sense that Dr. Pasten is very passionate about her veterinary work and is equally passionate about sharing the special human-animal bond with her audience. Her creative writing geniously intertwines real-life stories about her clients and personal companions and gives simple, yet interesting approaches to making your pets happy...Happiness is what it's all about, isn't it?

I'm anxiously awaiting her next book!

"Tarantula Whisperer" is not a book about spiders! It is a wonderfully entertaining, educational book on understanding animals, communciating with them and caring about and for them. With fun anecdotes from her vet practise, Pasten gives us unusual insights and untraditional advice. My dogs and I highly recommend it.

Excellent reference.......2007-01-16

This book is a serious read. Mr. Resh covers every possible angle of hydroponic production, from all around the globe. My personal involvement in Hydro is as a hobby, but I really enjoy the in depth discussions as well as the pictures of systems acutally in use. The majority of focus is on commercial application, but I have gleaned tons of ideas from this book. I showed it to the local hydro shop, and they got a store copy that is quickly becoming tattered due to hard and frequent use.
