Best Prague Guide I've seen!.......2000-07-21
After being escorted through the wilds and wilderness of Utah by Ted Brewer's guide a few years back, I made a note to look for him again on my next trip. When some friends and I went to Prague in December of last year I was pleasantly surprised to find his guide to the Czech/Slovak Republics. This guide distinguishes itself from most other guides by not containing much in the way of pictures. I was a little concerned at first, but discovered that this was actually much better, in that I didn't have any preconceived notions about what the castles and countryside was supposed to look like.
Brewer brought a unique wit and insight into his Utah book, and its present here in this guide. Many books just present information, but Brewer gives out advice and personal recommendations which I generally found excellent. Prague can be a little overwhelming and his guideposts and instructions were a welcome lifeline.
All my other friends brought different copies of various travel books, and I thought this one was clearly the best.
Open Road's Czech & Slovak Republics Guide by Ted Brewer.......2000-05-05
Eastern Europe, once off limits to the West, has become a tourist mecca in the last decade. It has also become the focus of many travel guides, from the factual/impersonal Blue Guides and Michelin series, to the commercial/commonplace Fodor's/Frommers guides, to the Lonely Planet/Rough Guide user-friendly types. The Czech & Slovak Republics Guide by Ted Brewer falls in the latter category. Mr. Brewer is not afraid to state personal favorites in all categories-a method of guide-writing which I, personally, have found to be extremely useful in my travels. This guide, as all Czech/Slovak guides are, is very Prague-heavy. However, Mr. Brewer did devote over 100 informative pages to Slovakia-considerably more than many other guides of this area. The "Practical Information" sections for each town/city addressed are also extensive. And the "Finds & Favorites" box at the beginning of each new chapter bring focus to many items which the casual traveler might miss otherwise. This guide is definitely money well spent.

My son *loves* this book! He sat down and read it straight through over a period of three days all by himself, with no prompting at all!
Squanto and the Pilgrims.......2000-05-23
There are only a few books that I remember checking out of the library on a regular basis-and this is one of them. I haven't read the book in a long time but I remember reading about the triumphs and tragedies in Squantos life and feeling joy and sympathy for the character. I've always enjoyed reading, and I think that this book is one of the reasons that I got started on that path. Great book for boys and girls!

I bought several similar reference books at the time of this purchase. Effective Business Writing is my go-to book, my first choice, and usually all I need.
Great reference book - - timely, too!.......1999-04-22
This is a well-written, carefully organized book that belongs on desks across America! Topics covered include organizing before writing, overcoming writer's block, suiting letters to complex situations, and using grammar and punctuation properly. If I had to provide one criticism, it would only be that the book is too short! As a reader, I didn't tire of the useful sample letters and would have happily read more and more. A great reference for the tentative writer and a good refresher for seasoned writers, as well.

Customer Reviews:
One Step Foreward, Two Steps Back.......1997-12-23
This thin book has only bare bones information that is now mostly out of date. The photographs have all appeared in several other TFH published books about guinea pigs over the years. For example, photos of red cedar being used as bedding AND cages with wire mesh bottoms are included. It is now known that red cedar is one of the worst bedding materials for guinea pigs, and that wire mesh bottomed cages can often cripple or kill guinea pigs. The best thing going for this book is the CARTOONS! Yes, guinea pigs may seem cartoonish enough, but these dozen or so cartoons will definately make you look at your piggy differently! If you're looking for guinea pig caretaking information, don't look in here. If you collect guinea pig books and want to see something a little different with the cartoons, then step over to it.

a good book for someone who knows nothing or very little about chinchillas but would like to learn. i wouldnt advice getting this as a book to help you raise a chin of your own since it doesnt cover alot of info (what not to feed, what number to keep) and its out of date as it was written in 1987. it does have good colored pictures and cute cartoon pictures but not alot of good info.

Not a very good "how to" book.......2000-07-08
"How to" books should guide a novice through the process of doing something in a very detailed step-by-step process. This book doesn't. It is sometimes vague and leaves the reader asking many questions. I guess you could use this manual to gain some general info, but you may be disappointed in its lack of specific "how to" instruction. The photographs are very nice.
Not as great as it seems!.......2000-06-24
The photos are great, and the language is kept simple. Beyond that this book has little to offer. It insists on a particular growing method without informing about other methods. The authors insistence upon using Metal Halides over High Pressure Sodium lighting is mind boggling. While most of the book is written in a simple and easily understood manner, the chapter on fertilizers contains more jargon than a PHD thesis. Use your money to buy a better book.
One of THE best growing books I have ever read.......1999-09-27
I have read many titles on the topic of growing marijuana, and this one takes the cake. It contains methods and sources of everything essential to growing your own pot. Good ideas too. I grew one of my best crops ever while using this book.

Customer Reviews:
Obviously not written by someone familiar with XENA.......2000-06-01
This book is simply a compilation of items mostly available for free on the Internet. The author is a bit sloppy in ascribing sources properly. Things are clipped together and there are many inaccuracies and errors in show content, episode descriptions, and so forth. There are much better XENA books out there.
Great way of letting you know Lucy and Xena on a name basis!.......1999-07-23
This was my first Xena book. Complete with an unauthorized biography, episode guide, xenaverse, and many other unique goodies. Plus it gives you some addresses to write to. Also it has a few pictures. I strongly recommend this book to any true Xenite!
this book is not really worth the money you would spend.......1998-11-23
I think that this book was alright but it could've been way better. There were a lot of errors especially in the episode guide section of the book. I think that the author could have put some of the things she wrote into her own words.
Excellent-a must have book for everyone who loves Lucy........1998-02-12
Thoroughly researched, excellent references, easy and pleasant to read. The author has not embellished original interviews or articles written about Lucy--she has been totally honest in her quotes. A few minor technical errors e.g. Renee's height, cookies are not crackers in NZ.
Xena X-posed.......1997-12-02
Hi, as a Xena fan, I want to warn you of this book. First off, it is UNAUTHORIZED which makes it all but great. Second, you can find most of it's content here on the internet. It has pictures and such that can all be found on the web. So I urge you, DONT BUY THIS BOOK!!!

irish hi story.......2007-08-13
comprehensive bio,no punchs pulled, the man who was Ireland to rhe rest of the world for most of the 20th century,
Thorny!.......2004-05-12
Author Coogan's works on Irish history tend to be long, very well researched, deeply documented and rich in detail. They are written for the serious, not the casual reader. This biography of Eamon de Valera is no exception. Moreover, de Valera s life was complicated and controversial. He is scarcely a hero to many Irish Americans familiar with their native country's past. Most of all, he suffers-pitifully it says here- from comparisons to the true hero of Ireland?s struggle for independence-Michael Collins. Bad feeling between them was directly responsible for Ireland?s tragic Civil War in the mid 1920s. This reviewer freely admits to his definite prejudices against de Valera and one suspects that author Coogan agrees. The advice from here is to read Coogan s Michael Collins: The Man Who Made Ireland first. Those with ravenously whetted appetites may proceed-with caution- to this weighty and gloomy text. This reviewer's father once told him that one cannot understand modern Ireland without understanding de Valera. That much may be true-but why torture oneself? Why devote hours reading about a gloomy, narrow minded and devious Spanish Irishman such as this? And a math teacher no less! The bottom line is that both Collins and de Valera inspire strong feelings. Some actual knowledge of Irish history deepens this effect. The result is an abiding difficulty in writing a neutral review on one of those men just after you have just posted one on the other. This reviewer urges his amazon friends to read all the posted opinions on this weighty effort from the gifted, if long winded Tim Pat Coogan. Too much hand wriniging? Welcome to Irish history 101.
Long but thorough history of Irish leader.......2002-11-19
Tim Pat Coogan compiles a sober and thorough history of Eamon deValera, the most influential Irish leader of the twentieth century. Combining painstaking research with first-hand accounts, Coogan presents a well-rounded portrait of this most complicated and controversial figure. Those who hold deValera in a saintly reverence may be angered at some of the less flattering depictions of the "lay cardinal." But this ranks as a most important read for anyone interested in tracking the course of twentieth century Ireland.
IRISH HISTORY AT ITS BEST.......2002-02-02
Must read for anyone who wants to know history and politics from 1916to 1950 in Ireland,USA AND England.
Eamon Devalera The Man Who Was Ireland.......2000-04-01
In many ways a superior work, but only if you are aware of Coogan's bias, which is blindly pro Collins and unfairly anti Devalera. An anology would be a Nixon apologist [i.e. Pat Buchanan or William Safire] writing an "Objective Biography" of John F. Kennedy. Despite their obvious intellectual talents, neither is capable of an even handed analysis. Devalera was a Giant of the 20 th Century, despite the fact that he represented only a very small nation on the World Scene for nearly 40 yrs. He was the central figure in the the War of Independence with G.B., + in the formation + leadership of Eire in the League of Nations, W.W.11, + post W.W. 11 /U.N., + as a respected + influential nuetral leader.Coogan for all is literary skills, is simply incapable of objective analysis except on rare instance. The detail is impressive, the sources are broad, and the scope is massive ,but he simply finds it virtually impossible to see what history has proven; that Dev was the superior soul in intellect, vision, ethics, and historical perspective. Collins was a good man , but seriously flawed with human weaknesses; while Dev...not a saint, who really is?....was a monumental tower of basic decency, judgement, + historical insight + instinct. Harry Boland,a great Irish patriot, who was extremely close to both Collins + Devalera, choose Dev, + the Collins' forces made him pay with his life. He declared that Dev was "the true Chief" and that the greatness of the man lay in his " incorruptability".If the reader knows Irish history, and if he/she can seperate the bias from the facts, they will gain meaningful insights into Dev and the glory that was his Ireland.

The Contrasting Worlds of Collins and De Valera.......2001-08-30
T. Ryle Dwyer's joint biography on Michael Collins and Eamon De Valera is a striking comparison and contrast of the two most important figures in twentieth-century Irish history. Dwyer's examination of the influence of Collins and De Valera on the events leading to the recognition of the Irish Free State, and subsequently the Irish Republic, highlights the dramatically different leadership styles, personalities, and crisis strategies of the Big Fellow and Long Fellow.
This book is well researched, well written, and well organized. Many joint biographies fail in their efforts to flawlessly intertwine the lives of two radically different individuals. Dwyer moves back and forth from Collins to De Valera with skill and grace, and in a manner that demarcates their differences clearly to the reader. Dwyer's work also gives ample background of Irish and global events that led to the treaty with Britain, providing a context for readers unfamiliar with Irish history.
The chapters on the early childhood of both De Valera and Collins are particularly well researched and effectively presented. Dwyer draws lines between several influential childhood events and the leadership style and personality that both leaders assumed later in life. Additionally, Dwyer's examination of Collins' role in the partitioning of Northern Ireland is exceptional. Overall, this book serves as a definitive study of the two most prominent figures in modern Irish history.
Two Very Different Fellows.......2000-10-26
An informative and interesting account of the lives and times of the two most famous leaders of the Irish fight for independence from Britain. While not as detailed or as exhaustively researched as other books on the two men, it is of particular interest because it presents them together and explores the contrasts between them which ultimately led to their split and the devastating civil war in Ireland, which was more tragic by far than the war against Britain. The theory of the book is that the difference in the background and upbringing of the two accounts for the eventual animosity between them--DeValera, the cold, reserved, patriotic and manipulative product of a dislocated and not very secure childhood, and Collins, the much-loved youngest child in a large, cohesive family, whose volatile, intelligent, charismatic personality created both enemies and almost fanatically loyal adherents. The contrasts are engrossing and illuminating, and the book is well worth reading to understand the dynamics behind the Irish War of Independence.
Big Fellow, Long Fellow.......2000-08-27
Picking this up by cahnce I was surprised by the details T. Ryle Dwyer went into. Such intimate looks into the personality's and the main hops, skips and jumps that went along with these two great men's lives. Highly enjoyable and hard to leave at home! Easy to read and sometimes fairly amusing.

a critical look at DeV.......2006-08-02
Tim Pat Coogan is one of Ireland's better known journalists, a former editor of the de Valera owned Irish Press, and a noted biographer of Michael Collins. In this critical biography of Eamon De Valera, De Valera doesn't come off looking too good. More importantly, the criticisms Coogan makes of De Valera are well-founded, and well documented.
Despite its many criticisms of De Valera, this book is not so much a book dedicated to denigrating De Valera, as Coogan's lamenting that Ireland was not led by Michael Collins, the brains behind its quest for independence, but rather by Eamon De Valera, who came to prominence as the only commandant in the uprising of Easter 1916 to be spared by the English, because he was deemed to be too insignificant.
As a general rule politicians come in two types: the visionary whose foresight allows him or her to enact policies that are beneficial to the country, and the schmoozer, whose rhetorical abilities and eagerness to set up a spoils systems a la Tammany Hall allows them to enjoy long periods in power.
Coogan emphatically asserts that De Valera was a professional schmoozer and master of bureaucratic infighting, and far less competent as a policy expert. He shows how DeV frequently chose an understanding of history that suited him, so-called "De Valera facts," was very pragmatic when the need arose "As so often happened, De Valera wrestled with his conscience, and won..." questions his paternity, mentions rumors about his relationship with his secretary. He makes much of De Valera's propensity to make political hay out of Ireland's partition, and plead for a reunification, all the while fusing church and state to such a degree as to make this inconceivable.
His most trenchant criticisms are that De Valera plunged Ireland into a civil war to guarantee his preeminence in Irish politics, that he barely if at all understood the economic facts of life. Coogan himself writes that he bears the De Valeras a grudge for what he felt was their shabby treatment of their employees; perhaps for this reason he appears to underestimate the good that De Valera gained for Ireland by keeping it out of the war.
This book is well-written in the sense that if you already have a background in Irish history, Coogan will articulately and thoroughly go over the controversies that he wishes to raise, and give you his take on them. If you don't know that much about Irish history, you'll find many of the issues he refers to be at the very least close to arcane and somewhat baffling.
