The BEST.......2005-01-26

Recently I went a little crazy on Amazon, buying a mini-library of travelling-with-kids books. Of all of them this one is THE BEST!! It is full of once-in-a-lifetime experiences that I either had no idea about or only dimly thought of. For example, it suggests taking a covered wagon train camping trip. Or overnight llama trekking in Maine at a turn of the century lodge. Or dinosaur digs for kids. I could go on and on -- these are only the ideas that caught my eye (I skipped whole sections on sailing and water trips).

The information is comprehensive and concise. They give great age guidelines and managed to find, for example, a dinosaur dig that takes young kids (only for a few hours) -- most seem to be geared toward teens, but I have a dinosaur-crazy six year old.

Also, I liked that there was a range of price -- with most trips falling somewhere in the middle, as do I suspect most families. I've read books where you pretty much backpack through Europe with your kids and that is a little too rough for us. On the other hand I get annoyed with books that include vacations where the cost is something like $4000 a *day* (See, Little St. Simon's Island in Georgia!) If we had a vacation budget like that we wouldn't need books like these!

This book is great for sparking ideas and for the actual planning of a trip once you decide. I was also very happy with how many suggestions are included. I have no doubt there really are 700. If you buy just one family travel book this is definitely the one.

Awful.......2005-08-13

Awful. I bet he wouldn't feel the same way had he ever stayed at one of his hotels without people knowing it was him. Then he would get a real taste of how rude and pomous his employees are to the average person. I had a gold loews card - not anymore. Especially after this book.

Highly Recommended!.......2005-04-27

Hotelier Jonathan Tisch has little but contempt for the slash-and-burn business leaders of the '90s. Now-disgraced CEOs such as Sunbeam's Al Dunlap, Tyco's Dennis Kozlowski and Enron's Jeff Skilling embraced a new form of libertarianism, running their companies to enrich themselves. Tisch, head of the Loews Hotels chain, touts a different kind of capitalism, in which companies embrace the idea of cooperation and partnership instead of a strategy of winning at all costs. Tisch offers a compelling argument that this kinder and gentler approach is more profitable in the long run. He includes plenty of very interesting examples of partnership at his own company, although these tales can seem a bit self-serving. We recommend this intriguing title to managers who are interested in profits, but not profits at any cost.

A Timely and Timeless Notion.......2004-09-10

Much like the hotels he operates, Mr. Tisch's book does not disappoint. He was very generous with sharing information and offering an "insider's" perspective on a variety of businesses, situations, as well as his illustrious family. I was truly surprised that a "business" book could be so engaging, personal and unintimidating...and I got a lot out of it.
It is clear that Mr. Tisch is the real deal and that he not only embraces the power of partnerships...he embodies it.

The Power of We, a timely book for the age of alliances. .......2004-09-08

The 21st Century will be the age of alliances as few organizations( or countries for that matter) will have the resouces to reach their goals by themselves. Jonathan Tisch's, "The Power of We," is quite timely as it helps the reader with both minset and practical tips on partnerships. From his belief that, deep down most people are idealistic, to the positive dynamic tension in the relationship between the Loews Hotels Home Office staff and the General Managers who have substantial authority and responsibility (noting also that the hotel president spends a substantial amount of time monitoring this structure) Jonathan Tisch offers practical and philosophical advise that I have found relevent in the not-for- profit world. Mr Tisch covers both the short term expedient partnerships such as changing their dinning room into a cabaret and the long term partnership issues where he notes the critical importance of aligning the plans and actions of managers with the objectives of ownership without unnecessarily stifling the manager's individual creativity ( the identical statement can be made in the not- for- profit world, just substitute the Board of Directors for the Owners). I have enjoyed this book and would reccomend it to those of us in the not-for-profit world as well.

Living The Power of We.......2004-09-07

i live on martha's vineyard. an island comprised of six small towns. perhaps, because we are an Island...or just perhaps, people are just a touch more kinder here, all Vineyarders know the Power of We.

In 1998, when a long time Island family lost one of their sons in a car accident, the Island virtually stopped for a week. The ranks swelled around our friends to protect, comfort, nuture and support them. Meals showed up on their doorstep nightly. Donations were made to build a new hockey rink in honor of their son.

Examples like this abound here. Whether it's coming together in a time of tragedy or to build affordable homes for local residents...we live the Power of WE.

Mr. Tisch's book hit home. I feel it would be a better world if everyone could take away the positivity and constructive nature of Mr. Tisch's words.

I especially liked Tisch's Tips.

The Power of We should be the instruction manual for moving forward in this confused, often scary world.

As a breeder and exhibitor of this fine breed. I recomend this book to all perspective westie owners. What a better way to explain what a versital dog this little breed can be. From therapy dogs right on to working in the feild, Ms. Martin does a great job letting the informed buyer be aware of all the attributes this breed can bring to any home.

First time and old time owners alike will love this book. It gives a wonderful overview of the West Highland White Terrier. It includes good puppy selection and training tips as well as breed health care, grooming, and temperment information. We particularly like her coverage of the breed's versatile involvement in canine activities such as agility and tracking. It is also a good book for people who are trying to decide if a Westie is right for them. We recommend Ms. Martin's book to everyone who obtains a Westie from us.

This is a quick overview of this loveable little breed. Not detailed of course, but the author does point out the downside of "Westies" as well... to wit: they are terriers meaning that a) they bark (boy do they ever! Our westie has a bark a Great Dane would be proud of), b) terriers dig and c)they are hunters and won't be able to tell the differnce between the mouse or squirrel outside and the family's pet hamster. Despite these so called flaws (in other words, don't blame your westie for being a westie)these dogs make wonderful pets and the authors love and respect for this breed shows on every page.The book offers good advice on caring for a West Highland White, as well as training one,(the training part written by another author) Maybe not worth 13 bucks, but still a worthwhile read for the owner of one of these dogs. As the author points out, the AKC breed standard has the perfect one line description of these wonderful little dogs: "...possessed of no small amount of self-esteem"

The book was a very basic, somewhat helpful book on the breed. It had some beautiful pictures of Westies. It was certainly pleasant reading but not very detailed.

I enjoyed the book and read it quickly. The one problem I saw at the beginning was that there was a lot of repetition of the AKC standard and his explination of that standard. I bought the book from a pet store and paid full price. Not worth $13.

An excellent summary of the breed, characteristics, and care.......1999-01-06

A very readable, down to earth guide to the breed. The author describes the 'Westie's' characteristics, while giving some insight into the background of the breed and the reasons for those traits. It covers the breed standards (however somewhat generally), and deals with the practicalities of bringing home a brand new "Westie" puppy for the first time. Well written, by an author who obviously loves the breed, and conveys part of that love to the reader. I had trouble putting it down.

Truly is "The Univex Story".......2003-02-19

This book is a thoroughly comprehensive look at the Universal (UniveX) Camera Corporation. It is also the most complete catalog of Universal products available. Not only does this book contain all of the various models of each camera, but also all of the accessories available for each camera. Even advertising copy and related publicity are well covered!
The author clearly spent alot of time and effort to get everything right, and she uncovers some interesting things. For example, the Universal Camera Corporation continued to operate until 1964, some twelve years after they filed for bankruptcy. There is an entire chapter dedicated to the development of the first 35mm SLR with an eye-level viewer, something that never even went into production!
Some questions, however, remain unanswered. Why did they drop the name UniveX after WWII? What happened to Githens and Shapiro after they left the company they founded? One gets the feeling that the author was truly fond of the company, and didn't want to concentrate on the shadier aspects of the company's operations. For example, the Norton/UniveX A scandal is described in a way that makes Universal seem almost innocent.
None the less, this is an outstanding book that gives an innovative company their due. This book is obviously a labor of love and it provides a thorough and professional description of the Universal Camera Corporation and all of their products. Fans of Universal/UniveX cameras really should buy this book.

Very Disappointing, since I thought this book would have many photographs and illustrations for Ikebana and floral arranging and it virtually had no photo's at all.

Ikebana Expressions is a very inspiring book.The arragements are really creative and plenty of life and joy.It is a delight for the eyes and for the soul. The author presents her own concepts about new contemporany flower arrangements, using a wide array of containers,plants and materials. The beauty of the plant's natural lines is emphasized by combining the container and the floral material. It is shown how to combine the enviroment and the arragement, even for big places and outdoors. I have studied ikebana from a traditional school with rigid rules even for the free style; and the arrangements looked like medieval paintings. Reading this book, you will find inspiration and new ideas in every page.

The Arab-Israeli conflict has become an example of total disregard for international law by all parties involved, including the United Nations, to the detriment of a regional and global lasting peace. The conflict has contributed considerably to the erosion of the moral and legal authority of the United Nations, while the international community has failed to take prompt advantage of the East-West detente. Peoples with statehood -- the Iraqis, Somalis, Yugoslavs -- and even more those without -- the Palestinians -- paid a high price for the international lack of decisiveness. Dynamics of Self-Determination in Palestine discusses the Palestinian conflict in the light of the protection of peoples under international law. Chapter One treats the fact that the Arab states and the Palestinians have overlooked the element of negotiation in the keeping of international order, Chapter Two discusses the International Bill of Rights, in which the UN included self-determination in order to protect peoples against oppression, while Chapter Three expounds on the fact that, in doing so, it shaped the framework for the settlement of conflicting territorial claims to Palestine. The final chapter sets forth the desired UN participation in the creation of Palestine.
