Book Description
This book reads like a loping conversation with our 26th president. He has just returned from his year-long safari in east Africa at the turn of the last century and he is full of stories about hunting and native life. He is also full of dated opinions about the native peoples and what should be done about them (for their own good, of course). The graphic (and endless) hunting scenes are also not for the vegans amongst us. But all this said, this is a bully adventure book.

Revised for the '90s, the second edition of Good Dog, Bad Dog serves up the same sound training philosophy--one grounded in love, praise, and affection--found in the original and offers updated and expanded information that enables you to tailor Fido's training according to his temperament. Authors Mordecai Siegal and Matthew Margolis introduce readers to the five basic canine temperament types--strong-willed, shy, high-energy/outgoing, calm/easygoing, and aggressive--and then discuss every aspect of training, from housebreaking, sit, stay, and heel, to down-stay, come when called, and problem behavior, providing "customized training techniques to match the various personalities." A new chapter on bonding with your dog and an expanded dictionary of training behavior for more than 100 breeds makes Good Dog, Bad Dog a training treat good for dogs and owners alike. --Stefanie Hargreaves
Book Description
A best-selling classic since 1971, this practical guide to home training has been completely updated and expanded, with customized tips for one hundred different breeds.

Good Dog, Dead Dog.......2006-10-10
Before I give my review, a few facts. Dogs are the first domesticated animal, with humans selectively "designing" canis familiaris, beginning somewhere around 14,000 to 200,000 years ago. So it should come as no surprise that with that kind of conjoint relationship, we selected for attentive behavior. They've helped us hunt our food, herd and protect our flocks and us, and acted as companions.
What's it all mean? It means that most dogs are really easy to train. Almost anything works. Food rewards, placing the animal into the desired position, operant or classic conditioning (clicker training) or punishment. The operative word in that last sentence is "most." I've read most books on dog training and almost any of the techniques offered will work with some dogs. But you don't want your dog trained! You want your dog obedient. It sits. Terrific. Does it sit when it wants to or when you want it to. Do you say sit, sit, sit, sit.... Do you plead with your dog to come? Do you have to lure your dog with a treat that's visible? Then you don't have an obedient dog. You have a dog that has been trained to do certain things and it will do them when it chooses to. I call those dogs dead. Because the first time that dog gets out of the house and sees little Tommy riding his scooter, your dog is going to take off and get run over. The dog is going to think, hmmm, piece of cheese or run after Tommy (or a bunny or another dog or an ice cream truck)Tommy often wins the toss.
We seem to have developed a softer, kinder view of training. Hooey. K9 cops, the military and SAR dog trainers don't use these techniques. Why. They are not reliable and when you tell your dog to sit/stay or come, you want reliable. Your dog's life may be at stake. One of the more popular books, talking about R+, which means positive reinforcement, slips in a sentence in the middle of the book, that goes something like, "of course in certain situations where the dog's life may be in danger, corrections may be necessary..." As to Dolphins trainers who use clickers or whistles and are trying to convince you that the same techniques can work with dogs, don't you believe it. Let me see them go through their paces, with the tank filled with food fish. You are training so that your dog will ignore distractions and pay attention only to its handler, you. That's what this is all about. If you don't mind being pulled down the block or fighting your dog for your favorite position on the couch, then pass this book up. And if you are not prepared to really, really correct the dog when it lunges at another dog, then just go watch some tv. This book tells us to do with dogs, what we do(or should do) with our children when they don't pay attention. (No, I am not advocating choke collars for kids - but come to think about it, it's not such a bad idea!) The dog is "corrected" with a brief, but clearly recognizable (to the dog) snap on a choke collar. And when the dog does what we ask it to, we make an exaggerated and very loud, GOOD DOGGIE." We don't hit the dog, we don't destroy it's spirit, we are teaching the dog that it needs to do what it knows how to do, when we want it to do it. And the book makes it clear that there are different kinds of dogs and therefore different approaches. Pay attention to what kind of dog that you have. You don't correct an adolescent Lab the same way I would correct a 7-year old poodle you just took home from the pound, and I wouldn't correct a very sensitive, "soft" or scared dog the way I would a dog that is obstinate. This is a 5 star book. It isn't the only book you should have, though, It leaves out hand signals and I use them extensively and it leaves out, as one reviewer points out, the "leave it" command. It also leaves out the "get the tire" , "get the bone," "get the toy" and "move over" commands which I've taught my GSD after she went through obedience training with this book. Use food for tricks. If the dog doesn't do the trick, no harm done. But when you say, "Fido come." Fido should come - immediately, without a pause, without looking around, without deciding whether there's something else it would rather be doing. Once your dog has basic on-leash obedience training, the sky is the limit on what the dog is capable of.
Do not purchase.......2006-04-20
These books relies entirely on the use of aversives (collar choking) with dog training and does not use strong positive reinforcers like food. The methods are 50 years outdated and did not work at all with my dog. If you really want to know how your dog learns and how to teach him what you want him to do, buy Jean Donaldson's Culture Clash, perhaps the best book ever written about dogs.
Out dated methods.......2005-03-03
There is some basic good information in this book, but there are many out dated methods also. I like using positive techniques and this book suggests otherwise for some dogs. It also fails to mention many more of the techniques that we are using today. I would not recommend this book unless you have more background knowledge in dog training and can tell the good from the bad.
Uncle Matty's the best!.......2005-01-15
I live in Southern California where we hear Uncle Matty on the radio, and I got one of his trainers to come out and work with our dogs. It works!!
Missing some key points.......2003-05-28
This book is great if you have a dog that is having problems with obedience. It keys on different dog personalities and ways for the dog to become obedient. However, this book falls short on several items. For example, it fails to give the importance of hand signal commands and verbal commands at the same time. (It does list it on some commands but not all). My two golden retrievers listen more to our hand commands than they do our words and tone. Secondly, it misses some other minor, but important commands. My favorite is the "Leave It" command, that is not listed in this book. We use this one on walks, when our dogs want to pick up every leaf and piece of paper left on the ground. This has to be one of the most effective commands that I have needed.
I would highly recommend getting a couple of dog training books rather than one. I haven't found one that gives me all the information that I need. If you are looking for a great second book, I would recommend "Good Owners, Great Dogs". Happy training.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book!!.......2005-09-29
I am not much of a reader. But I could not put this book down. Excellent stories!! I will continue to look for other books by this author!!
A Terrific, Mistitled Read.......2005-07-06
First, let me confess that I've quickly become a big fan of Steven Mulak. I like the cadence of his writing, the wisdom he shares, and his down-to-earth approach with hunting dogs. I LOVED "Pointing Dogs Made Easy." It's entertaining and insightful about some very general principles of dog psychology and hunting philosophy. But as I began reading the book, I had to adjust my expectations. When the subtitle says that it will talk about "How to Train . . . Your Bird Dog," I expected more training details. For example, he emphasizes the importance of a dog being under control in the field and responding to "whoa." That's fine, but he doesn't tell the reader how to accomplish that goal with a typical dog. I recently read "A Brief Autumn's Passage" (loved that one too), and actually picked up more training tips from that book. I was exceedingly frustrated by one chapter in which Mulak spends several pages telling the reader why he likes autumn. Thoughts about the joys of autumn are fine, but I bought this book to learn more about training a bird dog. If you're looking for a lot of detail to guide you in training your puppy, you're not going to find it in this book. But you WILL find a lot of folksy wisdom and interesting stories. The book doesn't deliver on the promises in its title, but I recommend it highly anyway!
Bird Hunter.......2005-01-09
A very entertaining read with plenty of education on pointing dog training. Most of the lessons are anecdotal, but this book will certainly help anyone who's training a bird dog. He does admit that the best book he knows for training is Gun Dog by Wolters which I also recommend. Steven Mulak writes wonderful short stories on bird hunting and for those stricken with the upland hunting "bug", his books are a must for your library. Mulak is to bird hunting as Gierach is to fly fishing. There is a sense that these two authors understand why the reader is so obsessed with these outdoor activities and they are adept at passing this on to the reader. It feels as if you are accompanying the author on his hunting trips, experiencing the point and the flush. Mulak is able to pass his love for upland hunting to the reader. Pointing Dogs Made Easy is a must read for anyone who owns or trains bird dogs.
A Good Read but not incredibly full of information.......1998-11-10
This book is an entertaining read and I certainly feel like I learned from it and will be a better dog trainer because of it. However I had expected to recieve a book that had less anecdotes and general ideas and more practical tips and instruction. I guess it alls comes down to what you're looking for; if you want to hear a story and pick up a few hints and ideas this is your book, if you want to take your dog out to the field and teach him to go hunting with you this book will help but there must be better ones out there.
excellent well-written book on the philosophy of dog work.......1997-11-28
This is a remarkably fine book on the philosophical under-pinnings of all dog training, with emphasis on bird dogs. Humorous, well-written, interesting. Not a "how-to-do-it" book, this should be read (repeatedly) in conjunction with other more step-by-step books on dog training. Title is misleading.Mulak's approach isn't easy, but it is effective, rational, and fun. A mandatory purchase for all interested in the subject.

Staightforward, effective, user friendly guide & reference........2002-03-29
A-1 K-9: A Six-week Schedule Of Dog Training Made As Easy As A-B-C, 1-2-3! by canine expert is a straightforward, effective, "user friendly" guide to teaching a canine companion obedience to simple commands. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs, A-1 K-9 contains explicitly clear instructions for pet owners to effectively and humanely train their dog to come when called, sit on command, or lie down. Divided into segments with quizzes to check how well the reader has absorbed information, A-1 K-9 is a first-rate "how to" guidebook and reference for anyone ready to learn how to train their dog!
A-1 K-9.......2002-03-27
What a delightful book. I particularly liked the simplistic, but direct approach this book makes on training animals. It was written so informatively and down to earth that ANYONE can now train their animal by just following these clear, but concise instructions. I am sending a copy to my grandson who is getting a new puppy. He will cherish having this information available to him. My congratulations to the author on a job well done.
Excellent training Methods.......2002-03-27
This is a very easy book to train your dog, whether young or older. Good reading.
Kids and K-9's.......2002-03-20
This was a wonderful book for my children to use. The photographs made it easy for them to understand. Both of my kids got a puppy for Christmas and have used this book to successfully train the puppies to sit, down and come!
A FAMILY JEWEL! A MUST HAVE!.......2002-03-06
I've been a dog trainer for the past two years and I use positive and loving methods to train my "students" and the results are always exellent! People learn that you can communicate with dog using love, respect, praise, fun, games... and everybody wins, both dogs and "parents". I strongly condemn the "newspaper smacking" ways; that's why I recommend this book to all of my customers. Is a great post training and forever training tool they should have at home. They might train one dog and 10 years later they get another one, this book is an exellent reference to always keep on hand. Is a classic. And is written in a very readable way where a 10 yr. old and a 90 yr. old can both use it and be successful! Way to go!!!

Book Description
Dog Training Made Easy has been written expressly to help the average dog owner understand his or her pet and train it to be a well-behaved and happy dog. The author explains, in an easy-to-follow style, what to look for in a puppy and how to train him.
Customer Reviews:
It really can be easy.......2001-02-13
I do not own this book as yet but have borrowed it from our local Library. We are getting new puppy soon and I have found the book very useful with information for a new puppy. I have used several of the ideas on my adult dogs as well as a refresher course. And I'm happy to say I have seen improvement on leash walking in just the week I have had the book. I really like his calm and no stress methods, just takes a little patience and time. This book does not cover things like crate training but if you are looking for a good book to help with teaching your dog the basics like; heal, sit, stand and come, and having a better understanding of what your puppy or dog needs from you, it is a good place to start. I'm sure there are better books out there for the more advanced but I find this one easy to follow and understand. I plan to order it so I have my own copy for reference.

Book Description
Paul Robeson was born April 9, 1898, in Princeton, New Jersey, the son of an escaped slave. He rose to unparalleled heights as an athlete, actor, singer, and activist, and was arguably the most prominent African American from the 1920s through the 1950s. This work is a compilation of 18 essays written by scholars and activists that were presented at a one-day conference held at Long Island University's Brooklyn campus on February 28, 1998, to honor Robeson's life and legacy. The essays discuss his significance as a singer, his political activism, his efforts to achieve solidarity between African Americans and Jews, the important role played by his wife, Eslanda Goode Robeson, in his struggles, his founding of the Freedom newspaper during the Korean War, his contemporary relevance, and the way conservative Americans turned against him, refused to discuss him in the press, and tried to silence his voice.

Book Description
This is the first book to tell the story of one of the most contentious figures in Victorian and Edwardian politics: that of the independent-minded and exceptionally able Conservative politician, Sir John Eldon Gorst.
As a young man, Gorst spent three and a half turbulent years in New Zealand at the time of the Maori wars, before returning and being called to the Bar. However, before he could properly establish his law practice, Gorst was distracted by the lure of politics, which would be his lifelong passion. He became a Conservative MP in 1866, and was thereafter in the House of Commons on and off for 32 years, where he acquired a reputation as a notable parliamentarian, being described by some as second only to Joseph Chamberlain as a debater.
Gorst vigorously promoted his ideas, sometimes to the dismay of his colleagues. Provocatively, when he was no longer an MP, Gorst dedicated a book to "The Labour Members of the House of Commons".
Gorst ended his political life, aged 75, as a Liberal candidate at the 1910 election. He would, however, live to see many of the social reforms he had tirelessly advocated from within the Tory Party implemented by Asquith's Liberal government.
