Book Description
How similar are problems faced by families who work in business together? More often than not, family businesses throughout the world share common problems as they work to create a successful business without destroying the family. In Love, Power & Money: Family Business Between Generations authors Dean Fowler and Peg Masterson Edquist share the stories of countless businesses run by generations of families. Through the use of family business stories, the authors explore the powerful emotional forces unleashed in the running of a family-owned business. The chapters cover topics ranging from family dynamics, to employment strategies, business plans, and management and estate succession methods. By sharing the unique solutions that these families implemented, the book helps other families in business find the balance among love, power and money in order to master the complexities of family business transitions. The solutions show that healthy family relationships coupled with a strong business produce an enduring and successful family business, generation to generation.
Customer Reviews:
Challenges faced in family business.......2004-03-01
At last, here is a book that holds up a mirror to the reader. No one can read these cases without relating to and empathizing with these families and their stories: how they each grappled with the common dilemmas and challenges that must be faced when you own a family business. The most important theme runs like an artery through every case: healthy, adult family relationships and a strong business lead to successful family businesses generation after generation.
Barbara Murray, PhD Editor in Chief -- Families In Business Magazine of the Family Business Network
Excellent Family Business Resource.......2004-02-23
Fowler's book is an excellent resource for business owning families. Having worked in several family businesses and on the boards of several family companies, I am acutely aware of the potential for heartbreak. A rare few worked. The opposite is the general case. After a family/business conflict, it is not uncommon for family members to never talk again for the rest of their lives. Some family business consultants, like Dean Fowler, have found better ways. His book describes through case studies how successful family businesses thrive from generation to generation.
Things I really needed to know.......2003-06-12
This book opened my eyes about the challenges of being in a family business. I'm involved in a family business right now, and there are things I definitely have to start talking about with family members. Many of the issues in the book have never been discussed in our business and it makes me want to start asking questions and getting answers. The stories in it are very believable (sp?) and I really enjoyed reading it - along with getting excellent information about the pitfalls of family business.

Book Description
Plants that leap out from the rest by virtue of their striking forms, vivid hues, large leaves, or dramatic spikes star in this glorious guide to designing exotic, award-winning gardens. This author's imaginative design schemes feature exotic plants that seem to have wandered into the garden from another climate. Page after page of inspiring photographs show how such plants can suggest a tropical atmosphere, capturing the admiration of anyone whose eye sweeps over them. The book includes a discussion of the characteristics of bold plants and the settings most hospitable to them; a directory of the best exotics, such as tree ferns, agaves, and eryngiums, to name just a few of the one hundred examples listed; as well as practical tips on plant care, propagation, and maintenance.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book, Poor Typeset.......2004-02-28
This is a fine book, full of ideas that will make you reconsider your garden - planted or planned. So many unusual plants, such limited space and time!
However, the type the publishers chose for the captions - and there are 250! - is tiny. And against an otherwise attractive mottled background they are very difficult to read - even for good eyes. One has to read this book as one would study a text -under good light at a table. Forget the soft light and easy chair. The total experience is much less than it should be given Noël Kingsbury's expertise, pleasant writing style and excellent assortment of photos.
A Beautiful Garden Design Guide Emphasizing Striking Foliage.......2001-04-20
Bold and Exotic Plants is a practical, no-nonsense, garden design book focused on foliage that makes a statement. Every page contains beautiful photos that provide inspiration and visually demonstrate the author's design concepts.
Unlike some garden design books that are fixated on color combination and maintaining constant color in the garden, this book focuses more on variation in foliage form and texture, and maintaining interest in the garden all year long. The interplay of foliage colors is just one element of design, and often subtle. The crisp photography is particularly good at capturing the play of light off different shades of green in the various leaves, and showing how different textures respond with shimmering reflection or near absorbtion.
Despite the title, most of the plants featured are not as exotic as you might think and shouldn't be difficult to find. (Suppliers are listed at the end of the book). Characteristics that fit the author's notion of exotic are plants that impress by their sheer size or because their leaves are out of scale with the rest of the plant. This definition lends new respect to some rather common plants. For instance, the author shows how every day ferns can have a bold and exotic effect when sited properly or planted en masse.
Many of the gardens featured are a bit too naturalistic for my taste, but the concepts are readily adaptable to formal or informal gardens. The book illustrates how even a few exotics, carefully incorporated, can provide structure and a focal point that will enhance an otherwise conservative flower bed.

I love my Taschen Calendar!.......2005-04-08
I am big fan of Taschen books and I love their calendars. I ordered this item expecting the same high quality photos I have grown to love. If you love modern design then this is the calendar for you. It has a plastic cover on the front and back pages and enough room in the date slots to write everything you need to do for that day. I highly recommend this item to anyone who loves design and wants something orginal to carry around their important dates.

Book Description
This Sourcebook helps the students to develop the international perspective that is requisite in business today. This book is a collection of original case studies and exercises that teaches how to work effectively and comfortably with individuals who may not share the same belief systems, values, or communication styles. The material in this book covers many of the potential problem areas that confront international managers and domestic managers working with different ethnic groups. These include human resource issues, financial and economic situations that cause stress, and consumer behavior in new and unfamiliar environments. "Sourcebook" emphasizes some of the issues and concerns students need to be aware of when dealing with other cultures, and the importance of studying in-depth the culture, history, politics, and geography of an area.

A one-of-a-kind guide to investing in vice industries
Although vices such as alcohol, tobacco, and gambling may be deemed socially irresponsible, in the investment world, these stocks continue to dramatically outperform the S&P 500 in this depressed market. Stocking Up on Sin shows readers how to get in on this hot investment trend and make the most out of publicly traded companies that deal with "vice" products such as coffee, weapons, alcohol, and tobacco.
Caroline Waxler (New York, NY) is a New York-based financial journalist. She contributes regularly to Worth and Glamour magazines as well as the Financial Times. She was also the ghostwriter for Worth's Greatest Stock Picks of All Time.

Customer Reviews:
Readable, informative, but far from 13 five stars from 13 reviews.......2006-03-24
This should be the 14th review. As you can infer from the review title, I didnt find the book impressive. So I had been very surprised to see that it had earned 13 full marks from 13 previous reviews. I checked that 12 of them were from anonynmous or one-review-only readers. Well expected! Should Amazon set up something to undermine the manipulation by the authors, the publishers or their associates? As a serious customer highly influenced by Amazon reviews, or victimized in many similar cases like this one, I strongly support so.
Now let's go back to the review. Content wise, this book did provide good background info of Tobacco, Gambling, Weapons/Defense/War, Booze, Sex and Drugs Industries, and major listed companies within each for your consideration. However, the "Lessons" section in the end of each chapter failed to provide significantly insightful analysis nor high return/risk ratio recommendation in my humble opinion. In short, quite differentiated but definitely not one on the top 20 priority investment/trading book list.
Billy Joel Would Love This Book.......2005-07-08
If you'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints this book might just be for you.
The analog to Socially Responsible Investing, Vice Investing rests on the elementary economic idea that at any given time a meaningful proportion of consumers will lose the psychological and all-around economic battle against monied corporations seeking to systematically exploit their pre-disposition to the seven deadly sins: Pride, Envy, Gluttony, Sloth, Anger, Lust and, of course, Avarice.
Ms. Waxler takes readers on a deft walk through some of the finer points of investing in the tobacco, gaming, weapons, alcohol, sex and drug industries. Notably, she introduces readers to the SINDEX-69, a representative group of 69 stocks that cater to consumers' various vices.
I had no clue.......2004-07-27
Thank god there are people like Ms. Waxler out there who can write about a topic that is intimidating but does not have to be. Just from reading the book, I want to meet this young lady. She would be a riot to spend an evening with and I am sure my worth would skyrocket soon thereafter.
Why can't all investment books be this funny?.......2004-06-08
Hurrah to Ms. Waxler for doing the impossible--writing an investment book that is not only smart and savvy, but witty and--dare I say it--a page turning. This is one of those books that you read and then buy a dozen to give to friends. My friend is using it in her MBA papers. It just makes sense.
Great stock tips.......2004-05-18
This book is written with great insight and wit. As am amateur investor I valued Ms. Waxler's insight. The book is so appropriate to the decadent world we live in. She is right on!

Book Description
In 2000, the world of anthropology was rocked by a high-profile debate over the fieldwork performed by two prominent anthropologists, Napoleon Chagnon and James V. Neel, among the Yanamamo tribe of South America. The controversy was fueled by the publication of Patrick Tierney's incendiary Darkness in El Dorado which accused Chagnon of not only misinterpreting but actually inciting some of the violence he perceived among these "fierce people". Tierney also pointed the finger at Neel as the unwitting agent of a deadly measles outbreak. Attracting a firestorm of attention, Tierney's book went straight to the heart of anthropology's most pressing questions: What are the right ways to study a tribal people? How can scientists avoid unduly influencing those among whom they live? What guidelines should govern the interactions - economic, social, medical, and sexual - between a scientist in the field and the people being studied? This volume represents anthropology's thoughtful, measured reply to the issues raised by this heated controversy. Placing the dispute within the context of ongoing debates over the ethics of biomedical research among human populations, the contributors to this volume discuss how the interaction between investigators and their subjects can most sensibly be governed. They consider the responsibility of the media in disseminating anti-scientific and pseudo-scientific views, and how scientists might best educate journalists to enable them to effectively educate others. In the wake of what was widely construed as a major scientific scandal, this landmark volume lays out in detail the principles and ground rules of anthropological and scientific fieldwork.
Customer Reviews:
Thoughtful essays on anthropological ethics.......2004-03-30
In 2000, reporter Patrick Tierney published a supposed expose' of anthropological shenanigans in Venezuela, attacking primarily James Neel (geneticist) and Napoleon Chagnon (ethnographer). Subsequent investigations revealed that the attacks on Neel were simply wrong, and the more substantive ones on Chagnon were too, leaving a residue of broader charges that Chagnon had sensationalized the Yanomamo people and made them seem more violent and harsh than they really are--a serious matter, since it allowed certain government and private parties to excuse genocidal attacks on the Yanomamo. Tierney's book would probably have passed unnoticed if it had not been rather prematurely hyped by certain excellent and well-known anthropologists (who have, I think, lived to regret this). As it was, the whole episode produced a storm of controversy. Tierney's book also led to a halt on vaccinating indigenous populations in some areas, since the most sensationalist (and clearly wrong) charge leveled at Neel was that he had inoculated Yanomamo with inferior vaccine, so as to study their reactions.
The present book, edited by prominent anthropologists from Brazil and Venezuela, puts the whole controversy in some perspective. The book quickly dispenses with the wilder Tierney charges, but then settles into a serious and thoughtful series of enquiries about the real issues raised: bringing health care to indigenous peoples, and publishing dubious accounts of them. The need for health care is established by a large amount of sobering statistics. Indigenous peoples in South America (and elsewhere) have terrible health problems, and live far less long than settler populations in their countries. They desperately need inoculations and every other sort of health care. The question of publication is less clear-cut. Sensationalist accounts, whether by reporters or anthropologists, clearly do no good. But how much advocacy are anthropologists expected to have? How is the cause of bringing health care, or any other good cause, best advanced in popular or technical writing? Balancing advocacy with factual description is never easy and must always be considered. The conclusions provide some of the most insightful and thoughtful ideas on ethics to come from the anthropological literature.
The book is marred by the inclusion of a highly polemical article by Paul Gross. Dr. Gross is a highly intelligent and well-meaning man, but lets his rhetoric get away from him, thus sorely damaging the otherwise thoughtful and balanced tone of this book. I fear the pro-Tierney forces may seize on this essay to discredit the whole book.
Unfortunately, nasty attack literature is now getting rather common in anthropology. Several leading anthropologists and biologists who have dedicated their lives to successfully helping local societies and indigenous peoples have been subjected to Tierney-style attacks recently. Often, the attackers are not reporters, but actual anthropologists, sometimes people who felt somehow slighted or aggrieved by the anthropologist(s) in question. Even university presses have published such books.
No one is above criticism, but everyone, even in politics (let alone science), should be above dishonest, unfair, and viciously polemic criticism. It is extremely disturbing to see the morality and tactics of Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly spilling over into anthropology.
Salzano and Hurtado's book provides a very important step in the right direction. Real issues are raised by even the wildest critics, and these issues should be thoughtful and soberly considered. Answering them in their own style merely makes the whole mess worse. One hopes that publishers, webmasters, and listserve managers will resist the temptation to maximize sales and attention by publishing irresponsible personal attacks.

helpful firsthand account.......2004-12-08
At the turn of the century Salonica had a thriving and large Jewish communty. When one and half million native Greeks in Turkey were expelled by the Turks, many settled in Salonica, as it was the most commericial city and they had come from commerical cities themselves.
Durign the interwar period a larger portion of Jews in Salonica and Greece in general settled in Palestine, indeed the Zionist movement had deep roots in Salonica immigrated.
One of the interesting bits of history is that while Bulgaria is often seen as freindly to the Jews during the Holocaust, the most comprehensive terror occured in the wide area of northern Greece under Bulgarian occupation. The Bulgarian authorities readily and enthusiastically rounded up and deported Greeek Jews in those areas -- which they expected to annex.
The German SS did manage to destroy the Jewish community in Salonika. Thankfully eleewhere in Greece many Greeks helped people escape. Unfortunately in Salonica we saw the inexplicable collaboration of the Chief Rabbi Koretz with the SS.
Released archives now show a huge number of diplomatic cables indicating Washignton was fully aware of the situation. More damning is offical British policy of refusing to allow Jews to leave Greece.
With that background, Kounio-Amarilio's own experience adds the human dimension to this terrible tragedy and loss.
A grim reminder.......2004-01-31
Edmund Burke said: "For the triumph of evil it is only necessary that good men do nothing." This book is a grim reminder of that truth. The back cover tells us exactly what we will find. "Before the Second World War there was a thriving Jewish community of some 50,000 people in Thessaloniki, Greece. In 1943, under Nazi occupation, virtually the entire community was deported to Auschwitz extermination camp. That Erika Amariglio and several members of her family survived is due only to a series of coincidences, which started with the fact that they were on the first transport to Auschwitz, and of the 2,800 people on their train they were the only ones who spoke fluent German. Erika Amariglio's story covers the period before the war in Thessaloniki, the German occupation and the gradual tightening of restrictions, the transportation, the two-and-a-half years that she and members of her family spent in Auschwitz, the long death march back to Germany, their escape to Yugoslavia, and the eventual reunion of the family in Greece. It concludes with the author's return to Auschwitz many years later as a delegate to an international conference on the Holocaust. "
Creating a better world for our children is not just the nourishing of good but it is also the crushing of evil. It is horrible to be reminded what evil men can do if we just stand aside and pretend not to see. Unfortunately we need to be reminded periodically of this sad truth.
A rarely heard story of a vanished community.......2000-08-10
In 1912, when the Ottoman city of Thessaloniki was turned over to Greece, Jews outnumbered Greeks, Muslims, Bulgarians and other residents. In 1917, fire destroyed much of the Jewish center of town. But by 1926, when the author was born, the city a growing Greek metropolis. Today, it has 1 million residents, but only 2,000 Jews. In 1939, the population of Jews living in the city of Salonika had dropped from about 90,000 to 56,000. In less than 12 weeks, all but 500 Jews were deported to death camps. By the end of August, 1943, the 500 Jews left owed their lives to the fact that they had kept their Spanish citizenship. Dieter Wisliceny, Eichmann's deputy in Greece, claimed that 60 to 65,000 Greek Jews were brought to Auschwitz. By September of 1944 only 2,500 of these were still alive and many more died before 1945, when they were marched to other camps. By far the largest proportion of those who were transported and who died in the camps were from Thessaloniki (Salonika). Erika Kounio-Amariglio, the daughter of an Austrian-Jewish mother and a Salonikan father, owed her survival in part to her knowledge of German. Her father owned a photography business in the city. Her mother had fought hard to be accepted and seems to have succeeded in overcoming the family's initial distrust of her as a foreigner. Having given up her medical studies at Leipzig University to follow her husband to Salonika, her mother maintained a close connection with her Austrian jewish family and sent her children back to spend part of each summer with her parents in Karlsbad. In 1938, when the Germans occupied Sudetenland, Erika's maternal grandparents moved to Salonika. This is a story of the vanished world of the Sephardic community of Salonika. This is the author's history of the town and the stories of the ghosts of those residents who were killed killed at Auschwitz, and how slowly over time, people gradually reacquire those average human desires after tragedy.
