Yosano Akiko (1878-1942) was one of Japan's greatest poets and translators from classical Japanese. Her output was extraordinary, including twenty volumes of poetry and the most popular translation of the ancient classic The Tale of Genji into modern Japanese. The mother of eleven children, she was a prominent feminist and frequent contributor to Japan's first feminist journal of creative writing, Seito (Blue stocking).
In 1928 at a highpoint of Sino-Japanese tensions, Yosano was invited by the South Manchurian Railway Company to travel around areas with a prominent Japanese presence in China's northeast. This volume, translated for the first time into English, is her account of that journey. Though a portrait of China and the Chinese, the chronicle is most revealing as a portrait of modern Japanese representations of China -- and as a study of Yosano herself.

Beautiful coverage of a relatively unknown land........1998-12-17
This book is the only pictorial book I've encountered that not only depicts life and land in the obscure region between Manchuria and Tibet, but covers it absolutely eloquently. For anyone who is interested in this forgotten territory, this books illuminates the region with gorgeous, striking images and informative text. It is well worth the price.

More Than the Title Suggests.......2004-01-22
The title of Murie's book is far too restrictive to represent the full range of its contents. While the longest single chapter of the book is, indeed, devoted to the habits and ranges of wolves, including their interrelationships with other species inhabiting the huge national park surrounding Mt. McKinley (or Denali, as it is more popularly known in Alaska), other chapters deal with many other animals native to the region. Among those studied rather intensively are Dall sheep, caribou, moose and fox. Two rather brief chapters give sketches of grizzly bear and golden eagle as well. A more inclusive title for this study might have been "The Fauna of Mount McKinley."
First published in 1944, this book is a record of observations made by an astute naturalist bent upon discovering how the animals live, what they eat, where they range, when they give birth, and, most importantly, how they feed upon one another to maintain a healthy and natural population balance. Not a few myths about prey and predator are dispelled by Murie's objective observations, which include examining the contents of scats and stomachs.
Murie does not preach environmentalism, but a careful reading of this book should leave the reader with new insights into the natural world and may make him or her just a little more hesitant to intrude destructively into what is actually a highly complex interrelationship among many species inhabiting the few wild spaces left to them. Murie's approach to his study is highly objective and non-judgmental, however, and another reader could probably come away with insights different from mine. Still, I can scarcely conceive of any reader's coming away from this book with no new insight of some sort!
If one is particularly intrigued by the great grizzly bear, I recommend that he also read Murie's work entitled "The Grizzlies of Mount McKinley," for it goes into far more detail than does the single chapter on grizzlies in this book. Before investing the purchase price and the reading time in either book, do understand that these are not "story books" and that they are in no way sentimental or emotive approaches to their subjects. They are highly descriptive, scantily illustrated with old black and white photos from the early 1940's, and, at times, recite fairly dry statistical observations. Overall, however, they are well worth the investment by anyone who has an interest in the wild creatures that still inhabit the less-traveled areas of North America.

Classic, compelling narrative on wolves & Adolph Murie.......2001-12-05
Tim Rawson has written an engaging and beautifully researched book exploring the saga of wolf control in Denali National Park. He also documents this controversial issue outside that park, both in Alaska and throughout the country. It is an unthinking oversight, however, that the publisher neglected--either in the subtitle or in the Library of congress catalog info--to mention the fascinating character who resides in these pages: Adolph Murie. This lesser known brother of Olaus Murie was largely responsible for our modern day understanding that wolves are an essential part of the ecosystem. Pre Adolph Murie it was popular to think of wolves as vermin in need of extermination. Adolph's life work, as it unfolds in Rawson's pages, turns this scholarly history into compelling biography. Even if you haven't read Barry Lopez' OF WOLVES AND MEN (or if you have any interest in wolves in general), CHANGING TRACKS is a true classic.
A scholarly, involving survey.......2001-08-08
Alaska residents and students of national parks issues will find Changing Tracks involving: it details the events which shaped both Mt. McKinley Park and the national policy on dealing with predators in national parks in general, outlining the decisions and actions which have influenced park service policies throughout the country. A variety of experiences, from game managers to conservationists, are presented in this scholarly, involving survey.

I thought this book book was a good book. It probably is one of the best in the series. It is heart pounding suspenseful,thrilling and full of action. It was heart pounding and suspenseful because when the avalanche comes they get freaked.
This book is about Jack and Ashley going Alaska's Denali National Park and Reserve to investigate the death of two male wolverines. They bring a boy named Nickey Milano and Jack gets suspicious about him when Nickey says that he is crazy and they don't know what they are dealing with. They get to their cabin and the next mourning Jack and Ashley go out in the snow to see a moose but Nickey finds them and they find out that his dad is in the CIA but jack knows he is lying. They get to Denali and a man named Chaz has agreed to take them on a dog sled ride to wonder lake while Olivia is studying the dead wolverines. They next thing the Landon kids and Nickey know the is they see Chaz riding away leaving them stranded in the middle of Alaska's wilderness. Suddenly they hear a roaring sound what is it AVALANCH! Can the the three of them escape the roaring mass of snow or will they be buried alive.
I recommend this book to a 8-13 year old or someone who likes mystery books.
survival mystery.......2004-04-08
This National Park Mystery is different from all the other ones. The story actually spends more time talking about the foster kid, Nicky Milano. If you enjoy the National Park Mysteries, and like the story about the kids verses the mystery, then this book is for you. It just gives so much more detail. Remember, there are eleven other books before this one.
The thing with this book is that it is so suspenseful to see if the Landon kids and Nicky Milano will survive. (...). That's when Nicky stops lying, and tells Jack and Ashley the real story of his dangerous, hidden life, and his father, an ex-criminal.
I liked this book because I think it had more emotion in it. This story's foster kid really bonded with Jack and Ashley. The only thing with this last book is that I think the author rushed it. I mean, the bad guy goes right out and says he did it. Where's the mystery? Other than that, it was great. So read all the other Mysteries in our National Parks.

great book for any gardener.......2000-08-29
I got this book as a birthday present because I like to garden. I read this book over the summer in about one and a half weeks by reading for about an hour each morning. I learned lots of new stuff about all kinds of plants that I didn't know before. The short sections which are only about 4 pages long make this easy to read whenever you need too. This is a great book for all of you gardeners!
Good Basic Gardening Book Even for Those Already Gardening.......2000-05-30
A friend bought me this book as a joke but I read it and found it very good. I have been a gardener my whole life but it is still a nice read and can teach even the gardener a few new techniques. It has a very nice list of very easy to care for plants great for those that are beginners and afraid of killing everything.

If you like to know what happened to all those old TV stars and B-movie types who seemed to be called the next Jimmy Dean, then this book lets you know about them. Some became famous and most seem to be unknowns to me except what my dad talks about. Dean was cool and the others werent, and the book proves that once and for all.
Fun With Dean.......2004-07-04
The "Next James Dean" is a fun and informative look at the life and followers of James Dean. The book starts off covering deans life as a kinda intro just reminding us just who James Dean is and some of the rumors and stories that plaged his life and death.
The book also itroduces us to the new crop of Dean actors. In the wake of his death there was a void for a brooding pretty boy in holywood. In the late fiftys it seemd like Hollywood was over run with moody sexualy ambiguious idols all to eager to be the next James Dean.
This is all covered hilariously in "The Next James Dean", a book that mixes rumors with facts posers imposters, the talented and the cluless,all fighting for the title of being the Next James Dean.
Embarrassingly Bad.......2004-06-19
This is surely the worst book about James Dean yet published. This book is wildly innaccurate, extremely trashy in its sloppy rehashing of tabloid rumours about Dean's supposedly unsavory personal life and habits and incompetently written to boot. A tip off to its abysmal quality is that the company that published it is one of the leading print on demand publishers who will publish anything without regard to quality provided that the author pay the publisher. In short, a vanity press for writers whose books could not attract a legitimate, paying publisher. It's sad, really.
James Dean *MELT*.......2004-03-24
Being a huge James Dean fan, i found this book to be a great look into his life. The way this book explains the many who have tried to walk in his footsteps brings a whole new appreciation to who James Dean really was.. Also I love the humorous twists here and there...
Fun Book!.......2004-03-24
This book on James Dean actually covers his life only in the first three chapters, but it is packed with little known info about the long dead star. The rest of the book is about all the actors who tried to follow in his footsteps, even Elvis and Jack Nicholson. It is chock full of stuff that I never knew and shows how great Dean was--even to those other actors in movies. If you want the dirt, this book has it. If you want to be entertained, this book has got it for you. Highly recommended.

Over the past four centuries botanists and gardeners in the British Isles have gathered, maintained and propagated many varying species of plants. Their work has been documented in innumerable books and articles which are often difficult to trace. The Dictionary of British and Irish Botanists and Horticulturalists represents a time-saving reference source for those who wish to discover more about the lives and achievements of the horticulturalists listed. The dictionary's utility comes not only from indicating the major publications of the named authors, but also the location of their herbaria and manuscripts.; The previous 1977 edition of the Dictionary has for many years been a much used source of information for botanists, botanic artists and archivists. In this revised edition the scope has been expanded to include among its 13,000 entries flower painters in addition to botanical artists over 1400 entries and, for the first time, garden designers.; Finally the Dictionary should have international appeal since so many botanists and gardeners worked on collective plants overseas, in particular in North America and the British Commonwealth.; Each entry gives, wherever possible, details of dates and places of birth and death, educational qualifications, professional posts, honours and awards, publications, location of plant collections, manuscripts, drawings and portraits. Its main function, however, is to provide further biographical references to books and periodicals. Comprehensive classified indices facilitate access by professions and activities, countries, and plant interests.
