Little substance for the cost.......1999-07-06
This book is a 4"X6" book with pictures of only 79 flowers. Though it is a pocket guide, someone interested in flower identification should probably pick up the National Audobon Society Field Guide to North America Wildflowers-- Western Region instead for only a few bucks more. The field guide (4" by 7.5")has over 650 color photos of wildflowers.
Book Description
"The Gem Hunter," Gary W. Bowersox, tells his own personal story of over thirty years spent searching for precious gems in the mountains and valleys of rugged Afghanistan. During his many adventures of exploration, danger and intrigue, Gary trades gems and stories with Afghan miners, ethnic people, freedom fighters, government officials, scientists, and on a few occasions, international spies. His account is the true story of a life spent hunting the beautiful rubies, emeralds, sapphires, aquamarines, tourmalines and lapis lazuli of Afghanistan.

Adventures in Afghanistan: gems, war, friends.......2007-04-02
I loved Gary's book! I've been a mineral dealer for over 15 years. I've travelled to Mexico, the Russian Far East, Madagascar, Brazil and Pakistan in search of mineral specimens. While I have never smuggled myself across any country's border into a war zone (as Gary has, numerous times), I do know something about the physical, cultural and political challenges of business and travel in the developing world. Gary's book accurately and enjoyably describes th real risks and rewards involved in such travel.
Why do people take these risks? It's not really for the gems. Nor for the adventure. It's for the opportunity to learn about yourself while learning about other people.
Don't read Gary's book looking to discover the "trade secrets" of the gemstone business. Read Gary's book for a unique perspective on a part of the world most of us will never know first hand. Read Gary's book to learn how important personal contacts between different peoples and cultures can be. It's a good read --- full of adventure and discovery ---with the Taliban, the Northern Alliance, Osama bin Laden, and our own CIA as a backdrop.
Not what I expected!.......2007-01-16
Well, I thought I was going to get a book about gem tales.. Not at all what this is about... basically a " We had hard travel to the area, we hiked up mountains, we met miners, we looked around, we went back to flea ridden quarters, oh and someone approached me with a stone and I bought it". Where's the Beef?? or in this case, the goods! A story about personalities and people, not about gems. A dribble of what was there, no descriptions at all, no details of the deal! What on earth did you buy?? I mean for the guy who had the inside track with the sufi based northern alliance, and aside from opium provided much needed hard currency when the U.S. administration was backing osama bin laden and the pre-taliban, I'm sure lots and lots of gems and cash were processed. But not even the highlights of some of that were discussed.. after doing this for 30 years??
Well, that's why I am disappointed. I expected more gemological information etc.. So I can't recommend this book if your looking for arm chair gem hunting. Too bad, because I am sure the tale is there, and I'm sure it would be fascinating.. it's just not in this book.. maybe his other one on the geology and gemology would have more details, but I suspect that one might miss the background color... it's just very frustrating..
Sprawling, badly written, but wonderful as well.......2006-04-20
The Gem Hunter concerns gemologist Gary Bowersox's personal journey from self-absorbed businessman to advocate for gems as a tool for betterment of depauperate third-world economies. The prologue starts with his interrogation by a group of grim-faced men who never smile and never even think to offer him a drink of water. Who are they - Taliban, or Afghan secret police? No, they're U.S. Government intelligence agents, anxious to glean his expertise about Afghanistan in the aftermath of 9/11/2001. What follows is a personal account of Bowersox's personal journey from selfish businessman to world-traveler -- adventurer and ambassador for empowerment of third-world economies -- specifically, Afghanistan's war-ravaged economy. He accomplishes this by awakening them to the value of their native gemstone reserves.
Bluntly put, the writing here is crappy. It's reminiscent of your weird uncle's book manuscript -- you know, the one with the 4-inch-thick pile of paper in his upstairs office, hand-typed, and dusty -- the one he couldn't get a single publisher to take an interest in. The difference is that this guy actually got this thing published -- likely because of the topical subject matter. The text is sprawling, rambling, with distracting details, and Bowersox is occasionally full of himself and his attributes.
And yet... as Bowersox journeys into the netherworld border zone between Afghanistan and Pakistan, you can't help but being drawn along. You will feel the sweat and fly-bites endured by Bowersox and his mostly amiable (but sometimes untrustworthy) native companions -- the hunger pangs from going for two days without food, to be gratified by a friendly tribal family with whom breakfast is shared on a mud-packed floor; the weariness of walking for days along rocky switchbacks, hiding from guards under rags in a donkey-cart; leaving vehicles to walk around edgy border patrols by night, to meet up with another vehicle on the other side at dawn.
A downside is that the story comes to a natural ending somewhere in the early 1990s, with his exploration of the Afghan gem mines and the more-or-less successful networking of the Afghans into worldwide promotion of their resource via symposia and gem shows. But then, it starts all over again... and once again, we're expected to take part in dry, dusty journeys over mountain passes and the like. To be honest, I couldn't keep reading at this point; it was just too rambling, with no trajectory to pull me along yet again. The book could have really benefitted from a heavy-handed editor, or a ghost writer, and could have been a best-seller if trimmed down and given the proper flair.
Gem enthusiasts will enjoy the book, even if marginally; but the focus is much more about Bowersox's journey than about gems per se. Fuzzy black & white photos throughout the book succesfully enhance the story, but the gem photos would have really benefitted from color presentation, if only 2 page's worth (there are a few color gem photos on the dust jacket). This book will be of most interest to those looking for an Indiana Jones sort of travelogue and an insider's view about modern Afghanistan.
"Gem Hunter" is an Insider's view of Afghanistan .......2005-05-28
The Gem Hunter is a boots-on-the-ground, first hand account of Bowersox's 30+ years of travel to Afghanistan to buy rubies, sapphires, emeralds and lapis puts into perspective the unfolding story of the struggles, hopes & dreams of the Afghan people. Bowersox, who was friends with Massoud the head of the Northern Alliance who was killed at the hand of Bin Laden directed assassins two days before 911, tells about the involvement of the Russians, the Taliban, Al Qaeda and the Pakistani government's role in the affairs of the country. Although perhaps self serving, Bowersox says the best way to help everyday Afghan people is to buy gems from their country, one of their only legal exports with opium being number one illegal export.
Another must read is Gary Schroen's "First In" which is the missing piece of the puzzle about the early US intervention in Afghanistan after 911. The detailed account of the CIA's first team in pulls back the curtain on the enlistment of the support of the Northern Alliance and the subsequent military action to defeat the Taliban and push Al Qaeda into Pakistan. Inside info such as the $13,000,000 in cash brought into the country to buy favor, and the order by his superiors to "bring Bin Laden's head back in a box on dry ice" is dispensed by Schroen with little censorship by the CIA. Balanced with historical perspective, Gary Schroen's account of the CIA spearheaded War on Terror in Afghanistan is the most recent addition to an uncrowded field of first hand published stories of what really went on and still goes on in Afghanistan.
If you want to know more about this part of the world than 99.99% of all Americans, news pundits and politicians then read both of these books and you will. Better yet, give these books to US soldiers going to Afghanistan and you may save a life from the insight they provide.
This I Know.......2005-05-18
It is unbecoming of Gary to include so much about his love life, so to speak, in a book about gemstones and travel in Afghanistan.
Also his book portrays him as accomplishing all single-handedly and he did not, by any means. This makes it quite a one-sided book.

Book Description
Japanese Capitalism and Modernity in a Global Era provides an in-depth examination of one of the most central and defining aspects of capitalist modernity in contemporary Japan--the lifetime employment system.
The book investigates the key themes surrounding the system, including the work attitudes and values of Japanese company employees and whether or not Japan is converging on Western forms of capitalist organization. Peter Matanle presents and analyzes original documentary data, drawn from extensive research within four large Japanese corporations, in order to explore these issues from the perspective of both management and employees. The findings are then discussed in terms of the development of Japan's capitalism and modernity.
Contrary to the popular hypothesis that the lifetime employment system and the values of the 'salaryman' are changing in response to both the globalization of market capitalism and the achievement of material affluence, this book controversially argues that there has not been a fundamental transformation of the system's underlying structures. It will be of interest to researchers of Japanese studies, Business studies and Sociology.

Book Description
The work of the indefatigable Alice Hanson Cook benefitted the lives of working people-and especially working women-on four continents. A pioneer in union organizing, worker education, and equal rights for working women, Cook carried on her path-blazing work across the country and around the world, across racial, ethnic, national, and class lines, and across boundaries she refused to accept were impassable.
In A Lifetime of Labor, called "a deeply satisfying memoir" by the Times-Picayune, Cook recounts a life of activism, teaching, and research that spanned nearly a century and intersected with progressive movements at home and abroad. Cook lucidly recalls the many phases of her long and remarkable career, including her years of research on creating just and viable options for working women. As the Syracuse Herald-Journal noted, "Cook helped bring to the public issues as equal pay and comparable worth, maternity leave and support programs for working mothers."
Alice Cook's autobiography, written when she was in her eighties and nineties, is a unique document in social history, an important record of her ground-breaking thought and research, and a matter-of-fact account of a life devoted to justice and lived to the fullest.
"A spirited autobiography by a pioneering feminist, labor organizer, socialist and scholar."-Kirkus Reviews.
Alice H. Cook (1903-1998) was a professor in the New York State College of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University and a member of the executive board of Cornell's Women's Studies Program. Her books include The Most Difficult Revolution: Women and Trade Unions and The Working Mother: A Survey of Problems and Progress in Nine Countries.
Arlene Kaplan Daniels is emerita professor of sociology at Northwestern University.

This digital document is an article from Journal of Managerial Issues, published by Pittsburg State University - Department of Economics on March 22, 2005. The length of the article is 7215 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Digital Locker immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
From the author: We observe inconsistencies in the use of two of the most important terms in interactive marketing: customer lifetime value and customer profitability. The major purpose of this article is to create and clarify differences between these two terms by offering concise definitions for both. Our definition of customer lifetime value connects the word value in customer lifetime value to the word value in "present value" and "valuation" as used in finance theory. Our definition of customer profitability connects the word profitability in customer profitability to the concept of accounting profitability. The differences between present value and accounting profit are well understood in both finance and accounting. We propose the same distinctions be applied to customer lifetime value and customer profitability. The usefulness of our definitions will be demonstrated by considering the treatment of acquisition spending under both constructs.

Book Review.......2004-09-23
Finally an author who deals honestly with the mystery of Oak Island and Captain Kidd. This book is a new starting point for all those history, pirate and treasure buffs who are eagerly awaiting plausible explanations and probabilities to one of the worlds great unsolved mysteries. Oak Island and did Captain Kidd really do it? Read on. There is much more to the mystery than once thought. Bravo Mr. Harris!
A Truly Wonderful Yarn........2004-07-06
What a delightful read! A thoroughly good mix of historical fact and informed conjecture, this is a book that yearns to be read. Couldn't put my copy down until the last page was reluctantly turned.
This is a beautifully crafted tale that is both educational and entertaining ~ a rare feat in itself. This is as close to "reality-read" as you can get, you are actually on board with Captain Kidd roaming the high seas as he fulfills his role as a legitimately sanctioned privateer, which makes his ultimate punishment and humiliation seem all the more unjust and undeserved.
Mr Harris has an easy-going style of writing that at once puts the reader at ease and other writers at a distinct disadvantage. The word-structures are simply charming and Mr Harris'command of the English language is truly inspiring.
Worth reading for the quality of the prose alone!

This is a self-published price guide for collector's of PEZ candy dispensers. It is the 10th edition of the guide. We have been publishing and actively selling this guide for over 8 years now. It details every known PEZ dispenser (including ALL variations) along with estimated retail prices for their collectible value. Next to each PEZ, we provide a box to assist collectors in tracking their inventory.
Customer Reviews:
My copy's well worn!.......2001-07-03
I take this guide with me everywhere. It's not much bigger than a TV Guide and lists every Pez dispenser and variation known to exist. The pricing guide is just what it says -- a guide. There are always regional differences in prices. If you're a regular flea market and garage sale pez buyer, this guide's great.
Waste of money!!.......2000-11-17
Sorry to even have to give this one star. This is a joke and the only use I have gotten out of it, is lining my bird cage. Don't waste your money.
The answer for new PEZ collectors!.......2000-07-21
A must have book for anyone selling or buying PEZ online. It always pains me to see someone pay way too much for a PEZ collectable. This book is a great tool to fight back against those who would take advantage of new collectors.
A Great Little Book!.......2000-05-15
This is the only existing, up-to-date PEZ price guide available anywhere. Year after year, the authors have faithfully spent many hours gathering price information from PEZ conventions, online auctions and general sales; the result is a guide that lists an accurate price range for each PEZ dispenser. A checkbox beside each listing makes it easy for readers to keep track of their own collections. It's well-organized, easy to read, and includes a complete table of contents and index. Highly recommended for the novice as well as the more advanced collector!
Excellent, reliable source data for current PEZ values........1999-09-09
We have used the 'Guide' for many years and are pleased to see it imporving with the changes occuring in the (PEZ) hobby. We would prefer to see all items listed in a straight alphabetical order, with perhaps, sub categorization listed in smaller typeface where appropriate. For instance, Mickey Mouse would appear in its proper 'M' alphabetical order and then as added data, the fact it is a Disney item could appear.
There were a few important PEZ items simply omitted from the 10th edition but the authors have been most responsive and promise they will be added in the 11th. We are confident that will happen - and we look forward TO the 11th edition!.

Some really great advise and helpful information.......2006-07-12
Love the Storey Country Wisdom Bulletins. These are great because they are inexpensive and they offer basic useable information that most people can use. This bulletin on row covers and mulches is a time saver in so many ways. First the various methods of extending the garden season is something those who live in short growing season areas or where fall can bring a surprise cold snap will appreciate. And so many inexpensive ways to keep the cold at bay from seedling and plants. How many people ever thought to lay a piece of lattice on cement blocks as a shade cover for things like lettuce?
Then there are the easy to make, inexpensive row covers that are like mini green houses. And the floating mess covers that keep harmful pests out of tomatoes, cabbage etc crops, since they cannot get thru the mesh. So many people complain of various beetles and moths that wreak havoc on crops they have spent so much time planting and tending.
Have never used the black plastic as mulch where you cut and plant seedlings, but plan on it since it sure seems to save on weeding as well as watering.

Pearls of Garden Wisdom.......2001-12-10
Pearls of Garden Wisdom is a great book for the home gardener -- especially the beginner. It's not an indepth, technical book that talks about formulas for fine tuning your soil, crop rotation for maximum yield, or garden plot lay-out. It IS a book of ideas to try and easy-to-carry-out handy tricks to make gardening more convenient, more fun, and more efficient.
There are tips for using space well, caring for gardening accouterments, using a greenhouse, and controlling pests and diseases without spending a bundle. (For instance, tip #304 tells how to remove seed ticks with tape; tip 339 tells how to shield seedlings from plant munching bugs with a cardboard and a bit of screen.) Find plants listed according to the type of garden you want -- plants for a tea garden; a culinary, medicinal, or bath and beauty herb garden; a bee or butterfly garden; and more. There are instructions and recipes for simple gifts, crafts, beauty aids and edibles, and just general gardening ideas. For the apartment dweller or indoor gardener, there are useful ideas as well.
Pearls of Garden Wisdom is not all-inclusive, and won't take the place of a basic how-to-garden book, if that's what you need. If you love making gardening easier and more effiecient on a small scale with common sense (and often down-right clever) ideas, or experimenting with different down-home methods, you will enjoy this book.

Duh!.......2007-06-27
Don't waste even the $4 for this pamphlet unless you are a complete idiot. Let's see - the best way to deal with clay soil is to cover it with over a foot of good quality top soil (at major expense). Gee - I never would have thought of that! I'm surprised that moving to an area with better soil wasn't a suggestion as well.
Review of Gardening in Clay Soil.......2005-08-04
This small, easy to read pamphlet lays out the exact how to's and what not to do working with clay soil. Clay soil can be so frustrating to work with but with the help of this book I feel that I can be much more successful in improving my soil thereby enjoying greater success in my gardening.

My husband and I received this book as a wedding present six years ago. There isn't a week that goes by without one of us pulling it off the shelf to look for help with clothing and furniture stains, pests, repairs around the house, food storage, plants, pet grooming and anything else you can think of! I am constantly trying to find more copies of this book to give to others. It sounds corny, but it's the gift that keeps on giving.

Country Wild (David Larkin's Country Series , Vol 3)
ASIN: 0395771889 |
Book Description
Here is the successor to COUNTRY WISDOM, the first in David Larkin's series of handsomely illustrated and informative books about country ways and country life. COUNTRY ACRES takes the reader from the country house to its outbuildings - barns, sheds, cribs - and on to its gardens, fields, trees, and ponds. In his charming fashion, Larkin offers information and guidance for country-lovers of all levels of sophistication, explaining how fields get their size and shape; how best to use the tools of country work, from grub hoe to chainsaw; why you should (or shouldn't) grow potatoes; how to farm your trees and grow fish as a food source; and how best to pick and store your crops. All these and hundreds of other topics are covered in this artfully designed volume, with more than two hundred full-color photographs and drawings. Much more than a how-to book, COUNTRY ACRES is about the art of understanding the country.
Customer Reviews:
Over-the-top Appreciation of Rural Scenery.......2000-05-12
This is a visually fabulous coffee-table book about livestock, barns, trees, fields, vegetables, and farming implements. It's sort of a photographic companion to "Charlotte's Web." Rural life has never looked so gorgeous as it does in this book. There are no people in this countryside, no grime, and certainly no dead cars or junk in yards or on sagging porches. (Caution to carnivores: Once you have studied the beautiful and soulful farm animals and their young, you will not want to eat meat again.) Barns, birch trees, fences, snow -- everything is perfect. This is a strange book, one that idealizes the Northeast countryside so powerfully that it's a little strange, really. Best enjoyed by city slickers.

Book Description
Soft meets sleek, antiques mingle with contemporary, and personal pleasure combines with comfort in The New Modern, the second book in the Chatelaine Home Décor series. Relaxed, soothing surroundings, concerned with order, flow, and space replace less-is-more minimalism in this New Modern style of decorating. Learn to create these elegantly eclectic rooms by mixing cherished possessions with new-found treasures, combining an attic-stored ottoman with a plastic table or mating mismatched chairs. Here’s a perfect-for-the-times decorating style that has only one prerequisite: you like it. This expression of individual taste and style means homes are easier to decorate, easier to live in, easier to love. The New Modern shows you it can be done.

Customer Reviews:
Waiting in the wings.......2007-01-04
Edward the VII spent the longest time (to date) waiting to be King. His mother, Victoria, was a Queen who refused to initiate her oldest son & heir in the duties of the monarchy. Her devotion to his father's memory knew no bounds & she certainly didn't want to see anyone else sitting in what she considered "Alberts place". After Alberts death she virtually went into seclusion for 30 years. Leaving the English Empire without visable leadership. Bertie (Edward VII) did all that he could to provide that visibility given the restraints of his Mother. Enjoyable look at the pecularities of the monarchy.
