    Book Description

Curtis’ Botanical Magazine is probably the finest and most important source of illustrations of orchids and early copies of this publication are now collectors’ items with considerable rarity value. This beautiful volume makes available for the first time portraits and scientific details of more than 1200 orchid species, many first described in Curtis' Magazine. The scientific value of this facsimile reprint has been considerably increased by the provision of an updated botanical nomenclature including synonyms and bibliography. The illustrations are of a very high standard and represent the work of leading botanical artists including Walter Hood Fitch, Lilian Snelling and Mary Grierson. These colour plates (a total of 408) form the bulk of the book and have been printed to the very highest standard, and matched against the Basel edition of the Magazine itself.

            Book Description

In spite of society's wish to protect and insulate children from death, the experience of loss is unavoidable and there is surprisingly little guidance on how to help children cope with grief and bereavement. Never Too Young to Know: Death in Children's Lives is the first book to bring together diverse fields of study, offering a practical as well as multifaceted theoretical approach to how children cope with death. Using stories of children's own experiences supported by data from a large research study, Silverman explains the wide range of effects of loss upon children and the challenges they face as they grieve. Silverman presents grief as a normal part of the life cycle, which results not only in pain and sadness but also in change and growth. She further explains that children can and do cope effectively with loss and the changes it brings as long as they are taught to understand that death is a part of life and that they will be included appropriately in the family drama. Never Too Young To Know: Death in Children's Lives is divided into three parts. The first section includes an overview and theoretical framework that examines the social, historical, developmental, and familial forces that frame and focus children's lives as they experience loss. The second section offers a detailed analysis of how children experience mourning different types of death including the death of siblings, parents, and friends, and death due to illness, suicide, accidents, and violence. The final section includes an accessible guide to helping children cope with grief, emphasizing the importance and the necessity of social support as children learn to adapt to their new lives. Never Too Young To Know: Death in Children's Lives is not only ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate students learning about children but it is also useful for courses on death and dying and the family. It is also an invaluable book for mental health practitioners, clergy, schoolteachers, nurses, pediatricians, as well as the general reader interested in learning how to deal with death in children's lives.

5 out of 5 stars Never to Late to learn about death in children's lives.......2002-03-02

As a pediatrician interested in general pediatrics and palliative (end of life) care, I have received no training during my medical education about death in children's lives. Dr. Silverman's book combines her three plus decades of research with a multitude of family's stories to make a book that should enter the "must read" list of anybody working with children who face a serious loss. Her sensitive and concise writing was so engaging that I read the book in three days. Who would ever think that a subject as difficult as this could be presented in such an inspirational and accessible way?

5 out of 5 stars Wise and compassionate advice.......2001-09-05

"Phyllis Silverman fills these pages with the words and stories of bereaved children and parents and lessons she has learned from them. We cannot protect children from the realities of dying and death. Grieving is for them, as for us all, a life-long process of relearning how to be and act in a world profoundly changed by death. Children, too, can learn to carry the hurt of missing someone and to hold them in their memories and hearts. They do best within the empathetic embrace of their families and communities. Buy this book for its wise and compassionate advice about helping grieving children and nurturing the great resilience within them."

5 out of 5 stars A great way to learn about Children and Death.......2001-08-17

Phyllis Silverman' book about children and death combines scholarly excellence with a readable style. Most importantly, it is the work of a caring morther and grandmother who brings into her professional life a deep care for others. It covers the views and needs both of children and their parents after the death of a significant person. I have made it required reading in my Children and Death course.

                Book Description

From the editor of the extremely popular First Marathons comes this collection of oral histories from people who discovered their passion for sports late in life. Here are extraordinary, inspiring stories that truly show it is never too late to start, to find your athletic bliss and follow it. These accounts relate the transforming joy, the outright ecstasy (and the innumerable aches and pains) of being a late bloomer in sports-and how sports keep these people vigorous, mentally acute, and fully alive.

These profiles include an eighty-year-old woman who swims a mile each day; a bicycle racer in his seventies; a sea-kayaker in his eighties; a ninety-one-year-old runner; a seventy-five-year-old tennis champ who beats men twenty years younger than him; and many more. Each one is eloquent on the subject of how he or she came to discover sports, and in the story of each person's pre-sports life we see a beautiful cross-section of society: the office workers and laborers of the greatest generation, all set to their tasks and set to raising families, putting off athletics for another day. Their blooming as athletes late in life is in each case a source of wonder to them, a treasure trove they're only too happy to share.

As with First Marathons, this book is a marvelous slice of life, and testament to the powers of all humanity to strive and succeed. Anyone looking for the courage to start will find it here. This book will be voraciously read by Baby Boomers nearing retirement.

Gail Kislevitz is the author of First Marathons: Personal Encounters with the 26.2-mile Monster. She writes for numerous magazines, including Runner's World. She lives in Ridgewood, New Jersey.

5 out of 5 stars They found the "Fountain of Youth".......2000-11-01

Words are inadequate to praise this book. Most humans look to prolong the duration and quality of their lives. This book provides testimonies from real people as to the secret they found to accomplish this goal. Scheduled, vigorous exercise is the key. Saying this is one thing, having empirical evidence that it works is much more convincing. In addition, testimonies from a cross section of the American populace as to the efficacy of this approach is the "clincher." I reccomend this book for everyone, no matter what age. I am not objective in this regards, I fortunately started this kind of program when I was 60+ years old and can provide 1st hand evidence that it works. I lost 40 pounds and people say I look great.

3 out of 5 stars On My Own.......2002-09-27

Never Too Much is a gritty tale of the lives of several young, urban, African Americans. The story follows the lives of teens that have more than a handful of life's challenges. Barel has attempted suicide before and is struggling to fight the urge to try again. Davon is experimenting sexually and trying to come to terms with his true sexual identity. Rahliem is paying for his past mistakes while trying to hold his family together. Jalail is a teenage parent working to take care of his child and his baby's mother. Throughout the course of the book, each of these characters deal with adversity and drama while trying to survive.

With tighter editing this book has the potential to be much more than a 3 star book. Imes does an excellent job capturing the voice of teens and young adults and as a result, the dialogue was realistic. Each of the primary characters is rotated as narrators in the book, and as a result each has a strong voice. Never Too Much is a short book, but it covers several different story lines. I think the book would have been more powerful if the author had focused attention on a couple of these story lines and developed them more or made the book a little longer. Still, I found the book to be a quick and pleasant read. I look forward to watching the continued growth of this author and would definitely read more of his work in the future.

Never too much tells the raw and gritty story of teenage boys merely
surviving. Jalail becomes a father for the first time at age 16 and
then a second time 3 weeks before his 17th birthday. His girlfriend,
Anjanetta is 14 when she becomes a mother. Amazing huh; well life
doesn't get better for their friends.

Davon is 15,believes he is gay and struggles daily with the hatred
from his parents; Barel is unable to tolerate the verbal abuse from
his father or the feeling of loneliness any longer. So he comes up
with a master plan to take a gun and shoot himself. Rahliem is
Davon's brother and protector, he is fighting for his life in
the "big house." I am not sure how these males will overcome any of
their issues when they were not given what they need to do that,
however you will find yourself rooting for them.

I had some difficulties with this book, and one of them was the
story; I could not imagine these children running things. Their
demeanor was not that of tough guys nor were they hoodlums, they were
written as ordinary teenagers with far out issues. One question for the author, who raised these children, where is the history?

Jaeyel Imes has a wonderful writing style and I plan to keep my ears open for this author's future work. If you are between the ages of 15-20 I believe you will find this book exciting

                        4 out of 5 stars Never Too Much (Review) 4 1/2 Stars).......2002-03-17

Jaeyel Imes takes you through a realistic journey a teenage father, a sexually confused youth, an incarcerated brotha and a boy with suicidal thoughts. Imes is more focus on Never Too Much by subtly linking the four major characters through minor characters and events. Imes also keeps it real by showing the reactions to the young men's decision from all sides. The bonus story included in this published version of the work adds more dimensions and sheds more light on some of the minor characters in the book.

When you read The Rhyme, The Story N Me and Never Too Much, you can easily see where Imes has grown as a writer. Where as TRTSNM is more entertainment and keeps the reader imagination flowing with indirect hints; Never Too Much is more straight forward and unapologetic in its attempts to show the world the problems young African American men face.

This book is perfect for book clubs, church groups and the barber shops where real problems are discussed and then debated on to find a solution that is workable for everybody. But do keep an open mind because if you don't, you are bound to miss the gems that are sure to make this book a classic.

                        Book Description

Inspired by a visit to the White House at the age of five, David Albright has embarked upon a journey to live in that distinguished building someday as President of the United States. Since that unforgettable visit, David has visited more than 28 Presidential residences and libraries, become involved in local and statewide political activities, and met a host of local, state, and national leaders, including former first lady, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Never Too Young is Albright's personal memoir of the first leg of his quest to return to the White House, not as a tourist, but as its renowned resident. Through first person accounts, photos, and anecdotes, he leads readers on a guided tour of the realization of a young boy's dream. With humor, enthusiasm, and striking insight, Albright assures his peers that goals, large or small, know no age, young or old.

Never Too Young takes the reader on a kind of guided tour through more than twenty-eight presidential residences and libraries as he shares personal experiences in local and state political activities. Included are Albright's commentaries about his encounters with state and national politicians -- including former First Lady and now New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. The engaging and informative text is enhanced with colorful photography and the authors obvious enthusiasm, optimism, and humor. Never Too Young is a much appreciated affirmation of the American political system and is a welcome and highly recommended antidote to the pervasive cynicism that taint's the general public's attitude toward state and national politicians and the American political process.

This is an excellent book by an intelligent young man who knows how to set and reach goals. I've had the opportunity to work with David on a political project and know that he works hard to reach his goals. His inspirational book sits next to Congressman John Kasich's book "Courage Is Contagious" on our book shelf.

                            Book Description

1913. Walpole wrote horror novels that tended more towards the psychological rather than supernatural, with a brooding underlying mysticism. He achieved financial and literary success with Fortitude. The novel is a romance; a fairytale about a young man who very naively believes in almost everything; one of the author's school stories based on his experiences as a teacher, and an epic account of another young writer in the making. Its opening line acts as a clarion call: It isn't life that matters, but the courage you bring to it! See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.

Faith Andrews Bedford, a favorite with Country Living's readers, captures the magic of summer, childhood, and home in a moving collection of essays.

For years, the readers of Country Living have adored Faith Andrews Bedford's evocative stories, featured in her beloved bi-monthly column, "Kids in the Country." This enchanting collection invites everyone to join Bedford as she movingly recaptures the modest triumphs of children, the importance of family traditions, and the simple pleasures of country life. In "Sister Dresses," Faith's mother finds three special Easter outfits "all exactly the same," delighting her daughters. "Time & a Bottle" tells of Faith's girlhood walks along the beach, where she hoped that the sea glass she collected "had come from a perfume bottle thrown into the water a century ago by an elegant lady in France." Every one of these essays explores the beauty in the ordinary and the meaning in the everyday.

Faith Andrews Bedford is a frequent contributor to Country Living, where she writes the Kids in the Country column. Her essays have appeared in Reader's Digest and several of the Chicken Soup books, as well as many other magazines and newspapers. She lives in Ivy, Virginia.

                                5 out of 5 stars Great Mother's Day Gift.......2006-03-15

Ms. Bedford is one of those women who make life a joy for all those who come into contact with her or her writing. To have had her as a mother or grandmother must feel like a gift from God.

Through her short and emotionally charged stories, I found myself carried back into my youth when my Mom would work endless magic by making things herself.

The book contains three sections of stories, ones as a child, as a mother and as a grandmother. The last section is the skimpiest because Ms. Bedford hasn't been a mother as long as she has lived the other two roles.

Her stories capture and build on common elements of healthy relationships like family rituals, special places, shared experiences, favorite tokens, and powerful lessons learned together.

Often, you'll have the urge to do something similar for your children or grandchildren. Go for it! To make that easier, Ms. Bedford has included how to do various simple projects like making a pincushion, baking barefoot cookies, filling a dress up box, decorating plates, and turning clothespins into dolls.

There may also be days when you could use a little mothering. Just read this book and feel embraced by Ms. Bedford's all-encompassing love of life, people and nature. Is it any surprise that she's an enthusiastic bee keeper?

Heart warming is an overused description for books. I felt like any review of this book would be incomplete without that reference. I don't remember a more heart-warming non-fiction book.

A friend gave me this wonderful book and, now that I have read it, I have bought it for my two daughters, my mom and my aunt. The stories create such a wonderful peaceful quality that it is now my preferred bedtime reading. I read one or two stories before falling asleep and, thus, easily settle into gentle slumber. The world Faith writes about may have happened twenty or ten years ago but it still exists if we only care enought to make it happen. She has inspired me to create quiet times of appreciation of nature and family and tradition. I cannot recommend this enough.

As a long time reader of Country Living I have enjoyed Faith Andrews Bedford's stories very much. But not until I bought this book did I realize how many wonderful ideas for projects for children she incorporated into her stories. I did not begin to subscribe until 2000 but realize that her column "Kids in the Country" has been a part of that magazine for many years. And, obviously, I'd missed some great stories. Her essays are warm and witty and so very true to life. I was deeply moved many times. She taps into the world of children perfectly.

A wonderful, warm book! It shows that life can be good and pleasures found all around us for free.
I was born and raised in Switzerland; nevertheless, my childhood was not dissimilar to Faith's growing up in the United States. No matter what the continent, children remain children and life's delights are equal all over. One just has to open his/her eyes and hearts and savor what is given to us.

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite Up to Par.......2004-11-14

Simple Country Pleasures was published in 1998. It is the only one of it's kind...A squarish library sized Gooseberry Patch book, complete with a dust jacket and more chatty comments by the authors/s.. This book lacks the Gooseberry Patch trademark spiral binding, and the overall Gooseberry Patch 'cuteness' in my opinon. To me, Simple Country Pleasures seems like the authors were trying a bit too hard or trying to go mainstream... .The illustrations are numerous, but aren't quite as fun as the one's in the spiral back books.

The verdict? If you like crafts, this book will appeal to you. Pages 1-71 are all crafts, mostly to do with gardening. Recipes are in the second half of the book...And most have a garden 'outdoors' theme. Believe it or not, there is a recipe for "Stuffed Tulips" (no, I'm not kidding), and a recipe for Rose Petal Tea. If Gardening and Flowers are your thing...Look no further its here.

This cookbook is by no means the best monkey in the barrel, but its not the worst either. Its a fun read, but not quite as good as the other 35+ cookbooks. For real fun, check out: Christmas Pantry, Home for the Holidays and Magic of Christmas. They are excellent.

I did not care for this selection and returned the book. I felt it was not not as good as some of the other cookbooks that they offer. I would pass on this selection.

This is a great cookbook to have around in the summertime! I love browsing through it, the pictures and suggestions in this book are wonderful. The recipes are easy enough- I made the nacho recipe and it turned out great. This is a good cookbook to give as a gift.

                                                Book Description

An interest-free banking system has recently been adopted by several countries to operate in parallel with the existing world banking system. This comprehensive guide to the newly re-asserted system, a subject of practical concern for all involved in international trade between Western and Muslim countries, sets on a new footing contemporary discussion of risk and profit in an Islamic context. Nabil Saleh examines two restrictive rules in Islamic law, reflected in the ban on taking interest and the rejection of aleatory contracts, which strongly conflict with the existing world banking system. The re-assertion of Islamic law in a coherent banking system is considered in the context of its international legal implications. The book is also a comparative study of the two rules in five schools of law, as all aspects are examined in the light of the teaching of the four Sunni schools which hold authority in the Arab states and in Pakistan and of the lbadi school of law peculiar to Oman.

                                                  Book Description

1926. Read the compelling story of how a poor Italian immigrant arrives in America only to become the quintessential Hollywood sex symbol whose legend lives on today. He started out as a taxi dancer, teaching society women how to dance, before beginning his career as a film actor. Valentino landed his first feature in The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse. His persona of the smoldering, exotic lover took hold with this film, and later that year with The Son of the Sheik. He made two unfortunate marriages-his first wife was a lesbian and his second a dominating personality who nearly ruined his career. He died an untimely death from blood poisoning after undergoing surgery for acute appendicitis at age 31. Contents: Gardener to Sheik; The World Idol; Final Triumph and Death; His Loves; Appearance and Personality; Valentino-The Actor; As Others Saw Him; Volume of Grief; Rest in Peace.

A well written biography of one of Hollywood's most legendary actors. I couldn't put it down. Totally engrossing and engaging. I highly recommend it if you want a good read.
