Bali Handbook.......2003-10-23
Bill Dalton, internationally acclaimed American travel writer, tour leader, and founder of Moon Publications, wrote the bible of Balinese travel drawing on twenty-six years of Indonesian experience (thirty visits and a total of six years spent on the islands). Jam-packed with incredibly detailed information, the first 310 pages prepare you for the journey of a lifetime with chapters on the land (topography, environment, and climate), flora and fauna (domestic animals, birds, reptiles, sea life, endangered species, flowers, trees), history, government, the economy, and local industries. Dalton quenches your thirst for cultural knowledge with chapters on the people (the caste system, marriage, children, village life), the language (plus a glossary of words and short phrases in Bahasa Indonesia), and religion (priests, temples, cremation ceremonies). Balinese creativity is honored with additional units on traditional and modern art, crafts (woodcarving, maskmaking, stonecarving, textiles, plaiting and weaving, gold and silver works), music, and the performing arts (dance venues and schools and the wayang kulit shadow puppet theatre). Dalton gives you everything you ever wanted to know about Bali, from white raja Mads Lange to the toothfiling ceremony to shaggy Barong masks.
In the second half of the tome, Dalton treks you all around Bali, regency by regency, highlighting the important sights, beaches, nightlife, shopping, restaurants, recreation, transportation, and accommodation at all levels from homestays (the thrust is here) to luxury. Dalton leaves no Balinese stone unturned with his treatment of festivals and events, sports (snorkeling, surfing), health issues and concerns (including folk remedies), and visa/money practicalities. The depth and breadth of research is mindboggling, the reservoir of knowledge and amount of information is encyclopedic. Both travel guide extraordinaire and total reference book, this is an astonishing achievement: the travel parts may lose their currency (until the next edition), but the cultural course work/input is timeless. Dalton does not let you travel alone deaf, dumb, and blind-read him and you will not only see, but understand the Balinese universe pulsating all around you.
BEST GUIDE BOOK EVER ON BALI!!!.......2002-09-24
Having been to this magical place 5 times now and perusing many travel books on this land. I would place this as the number one book of choice for the area. The background of history and the covrage on the people make this the best trvel tome for this destination. It will give you a solid foundation and a good idea on what to expect when you arrive there. Even if you do not end up going there you would save alot of bucks by just vicariously experiencing it theough the shear reading of it!!!
Good Luck!!
Ron
If you do get there you must try the "soto ayam", the best chicken soup around; better than grandma's!!
Best Bali Guide.......2000-06-13
I was so excited about my first trip to Bali that I used 4 guides. By far, the Moon Guide helped me most to understand Bali and the Balinese. I was even able to impress the cab drivers with my new found understanding of Balinese religion, culture and customs. Although I disagreed with many of the hotel and restaurant recommendations - the real reason for visiting Bali is to get in contact with a culture that exists nowhere else in the world. This book will help you do that better than any other. The section on quick indonesian language is very helpful and the Balinese love tourists who try to adopt their language greetings. The maps are mediocre, but there are no good maps of Bali - most roads are nameless and unsigned.
I was so impressed by Dalton's guide that I immediately looked for another moon guide for my next trip.
Great historical overview,terrible info./maps.......1999-11-10
This book made for a great read on the flight over. Being a history buff I really enjoyed it and it gave me a great sense of the place. But when I got to the island I found that the book was just about useless. I got lost all over the place, which for some is half the fun but not myself. People with the LP's-"southeast asia on a shoestring"fared much better than I at half the volume. I'm all for for making an effort at understanding the country you will visit, but a guidebook that can't guide me...
The Best Bali Guide.......1999-05-03
I've read virtually every guide out there and Bill Dalton's Handbook is the most comprehensive and compact source of information on travel to and in Bali. If you are an armchair traveler in need of visual stimulation to spur the imagination, however, this book is not for you. Far apart from the Eyewitness/Knopf style high-gloss photography combined with very little travel info, this guide provides current, practical info on everything to do with Bali: history, geography, culture, places to go, how to go, when, where to eat.... You name it, it's in here. But if you're looking for full-color photos and a stunning layout, go elsewhere.

Customer Reviews:
Lots of advice for every day use.......2007-09-14
This book explains the difficulties in the communication among technical persons as well as between technical and non-technical persons. From my own experience I know that talking to technical experts can be very painful. At times they just shout at you and don't listen to what you say. They think that their expertise gives them the right to treat everyone else bad.
The best chapter in this book is chapter 4 "giving and receiving criticism". In the past I had difficulties to convey my critical comments
to technical experts and software developer. As they are very proud of their own work you need to take a lot of care not hurt them. The best way is to explicity state what they have done good before you say what they could do better to even improve their work. I am sure that I can apply these tipps in my work place
This book ist must-read for everyone in a technical environment and for everyone dealing with technical experts.
Solid Content.......2007-04-06
Mr. Chambers has put together a practical book that dissects many of the basic concepts of communication, and provides some insights about technical professionals. While I don't agree with all his points and believe he tends to over-generalize, the content is solid and easy to understand. For any technical professional looking to increase their overall mastery of soft skills, I would recommend they go beyond this book and find a good set of workshops that allow for testing and practicing the types of concepts outlined.
Effective Communication Skills for Scientific and Technical Professionals.......2006-06-30
Good book. Details the issues in the "cubicle" world of today. Explains how to improve the number one problem in engineering (and business) today, communication!
common sense.......2005-01-19
I had to buy this book for a class and all I can say is that this book is common sense.
"Don't use demeaning language when talking to your coworkers".
It is also full of meaningless corporate buzzwords:
"Don't engage in postmeeting negative criticism frenzies."
Job Success is Often Contingent Upon Social Skills.......2004-04-24
It is estimated that 85% of job success is contingent upon social skills. Harry E. Chambers' book, Effective Communication Skills for Scientific and Technical Professionals, has illuminated the very essence of social skills that managers need in order to lead well. This book absolutely captures very specific skills that are necessary for technical and scientific professionals to lead well.
It is a fact that individual technical and scientific professionals have great intelligence. But without social intelligence, an intellectually gifted leader may fail. An organization usually cannot reach its highest potential when its individuals work in conflict and without interdependence. Mr. Chamber's book is THE book to buy for its specific, insightful, and pertinent information to assist technical managers in gaining a much higher level of leadership competence.

Book Description
Lisa Zador is no ordinary painter of animals. Although her enchanting animal portraits take their cue from Old Masters, these oil paintings always demonstrate her own sure-handed technique and transcend parody and sentimentality. Sometimes whimsical, sometimes melancholic, Zador's dog portraits are a delight-not just to animal fanciers but to connoisseurs of the art of the portrait.

This is a beautiful book!.......2002-12-29
"The Edwardian Scrapbook" is simply wonderful. You can get a true sense of Britain through pages of royal souvenirs, the latest inventions for the household, food products, advertisements, sweets, toiletry items, tobacco, the Women's Social and Political Union, women's fashion, newspapers, magazines, comics, books, toys, postcards, traveling, motor cars, airplanes, table tennis, diabolo, roller skating, theatre, and international sports. The pictures are wonderful and this book goes great along with "The Victorian Scrapbook." I recommend.
Edwardian Britain, just picture it.......2002-04-07
This is Robert Opie's seventh unique style scrapbook. The very simple formula works yet again, this time he has collected 1300 printed items from his packaging museum all relating to everyday life in Britain from 1900 to 1910.
Like the previous books, the material is laid out as a still-life and then photographed. If you want to see what printed items Mr and Mrs Average had in their homes it is all included here, food packets, comics, newspapers, magazines, postcards, candy bars, boxes of toys and more.
If I have a criticism it is that there are eight pages that have only one item, I would have preferred maybe four of these to be crammed with items like the other pages.
Social historians and graphic designers, amongst others, will enjoy looking through this book and with the other titles in the series it is building up into a tremendous visual resource of everday British life.

For the Theophrastian student..........2001-03-21
Sources
Pamela Huby is a member of Project Theophrastus, a group dedicated to collecting the lost works of Theophrastus through quotes, paraphrases, and references made of him by his contemporaries. The majority of these contemporaries were followers of the Peripatetic school of thought, founded by Aristotle and continued by Theophrastus. Commentary 4: Psychology is a mixture of material descended from Theophrastus on the subject of psychology, and Huby's original commentary related to the subject. To assist her in the piecing together of material descended from Theophrastus, she looked to the assistance of Dimitri Gutas for Arabic translation and clarification, as much of this material comes from Arabic Peripatetic/Theophrastian followers.
Summary
This book was written by a historian, for historians. It is verbatim, placed in an elaborate and careful system to aid historians in researching authentic Theophrastian writings through her book, though this system can be complicated to the unaccustomed reader. Commentary 4: Psychology covers only what Theophrastus himself covered, adding necessary bibliography and indices to allow the reader to bridge the gap of time between this book and the original ideas of Theophrastus himself.
Evaluation
I personally have found this book to be useful as a quotation resource. It did not help me understand much of Theophrastian studies, but once I had acquired some understanding from other sources, I was able to find a wealth of supportive material for the examinations and arguments that I had begun to formulate. I believe that this was Huby's primary purpose for writing, and so that is how I was best able to use it. Because of her purpose, Huby maintained a very objective standpoint on the material descended from Theophrastus. Her focus was very much: "this" is the best reconstruction of what Theophrastus said on psychology, which conveys "this" about his understanding on psychology. In a sentence, Commentary 4: Psychology is an excellent resource as long as its use is limited to supportive material.

A Wonderful Life in the Theatre.......2001-04-10
This is a great tale of a life in the British Theatre during its mid-20th century Golden Era. Terry Knapp starts his story with his audition for the legendary actor-director,Sir Laurence Oliver when he created the inaugural company of the Chichester Festival Theatre and continues with a rare insider's view of the founding of the Royal National Theatre when its home was the historic Old Vic Theatre in London's Waterloo Road. Like a born story-teller Terry tells, in a well paced and charmingly informal way, the saga of the birth of what is now the theatrical pride of Great Britain. Terry traces its development during the first three years of artistic feuds and back-stage infighting and its Everestian peak of Olivier's magnificent OTHELLO in Moscow in the very heart of the Kremlin. Terry goes on to tell of being on tour in South East Asia, and his remarkable first visit to Japan which coincided with the visit of the Beatles to Tokyo. Awarded the first ever Churchill Fellowship to an actor Terry later returned to Japan to study its tradional performance arts encountering some remarkable theatre artists. His account makes informative reading about some of the world's most exotic Acting traditions which date back several centuries. He shares his experiences of working with Sir Yehudi Menuhin in Mozart's THE IMPRESSARIO and Dame Cleo Laine in a musical about the amours of George Bernard Shaw. These memoires have been praised for their style and content by the distinguished theatre biographer and critic, Sheridan Morley and by Gavan Daws, author oF HOLY MAN, the outstanding biography of Father Damien of Molokai. Terry was acclaimed internationally for his TV portrait of DAMIEN in a one man play by Aldyth Morris, (the title bestowed on him by the Hawaii State Legislature also being the title of his book.) This is first class, highly informative and very entertaining reading.
Hawaii's Adopted World Class Actor.......2001-03-03
This is a truly remarkable book and a delight to read. You feel as though you are right there as Terence Knapp reminisces about his life. In conversational detail Knapp tells of his intimate relationships with Britain's theater geniuses--Sirs Laurence Olivier, Derek Jacobi, Michael Redgrave, the irrepressible Judi Dench, and Lynn Redgrave and so many others.
But it is more than a book about stars. It is about a man's odyssey. He takes the reader from the hard times and poverty of wartime London, through the trials and triumphs of becoming an Actor; he shifts to the exotic orient in a quest to broaden his knowledge by learning about and contributing to theater in Japan. Finally, he realizes his second calling--teaching aspiring actors and bringing his love of Shakespeare and the theater to Hawaii.
In the Hawaiian Islands he has become a beloved and revered figure not only for his stunning Peabody award-winning portrayal of the leper priest, Father Damien, but for the countless other performances he has given for more than 30 years.
Knapp candidly reveals that although the dream of great stardom and great financial reward may have eluded him, he has found peace and satisfaction in touching the lives of so many in his beloved three islands--Britain, Japan and Hawaii. It is a story that helps us all in understanding and appreciating our own personal quest of peace and achievement.

A Terrific Read!.......2001-03-01
Terence Knapp has lead a fascinating and truly inspiring life...and writes all about it with panache and style. The Farmer review gives you the details on the books contents, so just let me add that this breezy, lively read is a must for any theatre-lover, aspiring actor, Anglophile, or anyone who just wants to sit down and read something entertaining.
World Class Autobiography.......2001-02-25
This is a jewel, an insider's view of the golden era of British theatre following World War II and the still-emerging synthesis of East and West aesthetic traditions. Terence Knapp has worked as an actor, director and sensei (master teacher) in Britain (as an inaugural player with Sir Laurence Olivier's fabled National Theatre), West Africa (on tour with Dame Judi Dench and others), the United States (especially Hawaii) and Japan. He has won accolades for his many memorable roles on stage and public television, most notably for his incarnation of Father Damien, the leper priest of Molokai.
Knapp tells of his day-to-day intimacy and friendships with some of the most celebrated productions and stellar performances of the 20th century: Olivier, Dench, Sir Michael Redgrave, Lynn Redgrave, Dame Maggie Smith, Peter O'Toole and Sir Derek Jacobi, among many others.
Knapp's great love of theatre, of the art of acting, and of the joy of mentoring illuminates this book with delicious candor and honesty. A must for any serious student of not only theatre, but also the arts and the spiritual life of the 20th Century.

Book Description
The last two volumes of Gladstone's diaries depict the extraordinary energy of a remarkable octogenarian: Gladstone was eighty-four when he resigned the Premiership in 1894 to close his fourth administration. His pursuit of 'justice for Ireland' through the successful passage of a Home Rule Bill through the Commons in 1893 forms the political centrepiece of these volumes. But there is also a wealth of material on imperial, foreign, domestic, and religious politics contained in the daily diary entries, the minutes of the Cabinets of the 1892-4 government, and the five hundred letters which accompany the entries for the governmental period. Gladstone's life-style made few concessions to his age: his reading, writing, theatre-going, and trips abroad continue, as do his speech-making and his church-going. His declining eyesight eventually curtailed his reading and led to the end of regular diary-writing in 1894. His vast diary, which he began in 1825, ends in 1896. Its final entries are a moving conclusion to one of the most remarkable and one of the most curious documents of British history.
