Book Description
Insect pheromones were first identified in the late 1950s, and much research has been directed to their potential as pest controlling agents. The initial research focused on butterflies and moths because of their significance as agricultural pests, but other insect orders are now being studied as well. Here, leading researchers survey this current work, filling a gap in the literature. Topics include termites, grasshoppers, aphids, scale insects, sawflies, beetles, midges, fruit flies, and bees. The volume is a valuable resource for students and researchers in entomology and crop science.

Book Description
This exciting new reference for children deals with the most significant events of the last 100 years, presenting them in a bold, colorful way that will captivate young readers.
From the emergence of the European nations and the colonization of the world in the late 19th century to the conflict of Afganistan and the Gulf War in the 1990s, readers will see how events affected the world geographically through a series of highly detailed yet clear and understandable maps.
Each map clearly shows how boundaries, nations, and political factions changed throughout history. In addition, the carefully selected photographs and cartoons from each period work with the readable, accurate text to show how events changed the lives of ordinary citizens.
In easy-to-understand double page "units," each world region is covered in five time periods: pre-1917, World War I, the inter-war period, World War II, and post 1945 through 1991. With the accuracy and detail you expect from Oxford the Atlas features:
* Colorful, clear, accurate cartography
* Standard "base" maps used throughout which make it easy
to see how empires and borders changed over time
* Easy-to-use cross-referencing system allowing
comparison across time periods
* Maps supported by concise and readable text
* Stimulating graphics which provide statistical
background for the maps and text
* Cartoons and photographs taken from each period
which bring history into human focus
The Atlas of Modern World History is a valuable resource for the student of modern world history, and an entertaining and informative reference for both family and school.

The State of Atlanta?.......2003-07-18
I have to confess I didn't get beyond the first map on page 9. That's because the map of the U.S. on that page has the following states bordering the Gulf of Mexico to the west of Georgia: 1) Atlanta, which looks oddly like Alabama; 2) Alabama, which borders the Mississippi River; and 3) Mississippi, which borders Texas.
These simple and obvious mistakes did not inspire confidence in me for the rest of the maps on which I might not so easily spot the mistakes. Therefore I put this book aside and told my nine-year old that it was unreliable.

Customer Reviews:
A good basic overview.......2007-09-11
This book is a good basic overview of the industry from the journalist's perspective. Covers such issues as licenses and trademarks, business plan and contracts, releases and promotion. The intro seems a little long-winded, but one could skip over that. Roni does answer one question clearly, though: "For most indies, BMI proves the preferable performing rights organization since it monitors college and public radio stations which are more apt to play indie records." Read the book, but don't buy it - check it out from the library.
it helps.......2006-09-14
its ok it help with so things any things you read on this biz can help
Medium Good.......2006-05-14
Them music industry is a complicate and harsh environment and it is easy to fail at starting your own business. Fortunately there are books around that can help you reach your goal faster and with much more ease, and this is one of them. It covers a lot of the aspects, twists and turns in the music industry but it misses out on some very crucial points which are presented in "Ty Cohen's Secrets to Making Money in the Music Industry (3-Piece Mega Audio CD Set)" by Ty Cohen " , a better and more detailed book about the subject, and an easier one too.
Close to medium!.......2006-04-21
Could have been much better but ill get it some credit that i did learn a pionter or two. I highly recommend books purchased from Musicbrains.net entitled the Indie label Kit on Amazon, Music business 101, Future of music and Guide to releasing an independent record by Tim Sweeney.
Superficial.......2004-01-13
Let me start out by pointing out the good things about the book. It is well written and covers every aspect critical to the successful launch of a record label.
Unfortunately, the book is not very thorough. In fact, the book is barely more than just a superficial laundry list just listing all the things that you need to be aware of. But at all times, the author completely fails to provide a well-researched, indepth treatment of any subject that it covers.
For example, it mentions that you need a music attorney to make sure nobody steals your copyright and negotiates your contracts. Well, that's common sense, I don't need to spend money on a book to tell me such basic things. I wanted to find out how to go about launching a label. Well, the authors recommends that I incorporate and think about the difference of LLC. and C-Corporation. She wastes 2 pages (= 1% of this very thin book) on basic knowledge that many other brilliantly written books about business law cover at much greater depth. Why did she even bother? She wastes another 20 pages on such generalities and topics that are mostly common sense.
Will she get to the good stuff? How do I promote a record? How do I go about approaching a DJ, a radio station, a music reviewer? Her answer: hire a good promoter. Duh. Come on, this book is cheap, but I did pay money for information. Why not explain how radio promotion works? That's one of the critical subjects of them all...In short, the book is too superficial and basic to be of any value to anyone serious about starting a label. Avoid and check out the many other wonderful books here on Amazon.com instead.

A Turkey for Thanksgiving
ASIN: 0823416747 |
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful story, gorgeous illustrations.......2003-11-07
A boy and his mother go to live with his aging grandfather on their rural Virginia farm. The boy grows to love farm life and his relationship with his grandfather grows close as the year progresses. Life is simple and their farm life changes with the seasons. The family can barely afford to buy a turkey from a store for Thanksgiving (for $1.82). Grandfather has been trying to hunt the elusive tom turkey for years. Grandson accompanies Grandfather on numerous hunting trips without finding the elusive tom turkey. Finally before Thanksgiving the tom turkey makes his appearance and they are stunned to see how very old the tom turkey is (judging by the length of his beard). Before the boy can shoot, Grandfather intervenes to allow the old Tom to live, and they wonder if the Tom has lived in those woods for as long as Grandfather has.
A wonderful tale with stunning watercolor painting illustrations. A must-own!

Book Description
The Cratylus has puzzled many readers with its lengthy discussion of the `true meanings' of more than a hundred Greek names. This book aims to give a coherent interpretation of the whole dialogue, paying particular attention to these etymologies. The book discusses the rival theories of naming offered by Cratylus, Hermogenes, and Socrates, arguing that Socrates presents a prescriptive theory, laying down what names should be, rather than describing what they are. This distinction between prescriptive and descriptive theories is elaborated and used to illuminate the etymologies themselves. After discussing possible sources for the etymologies, the author argues that the etymological section amounts to a Platonic critique of the muddled attitude of Greek poets and thinkers towards names.

Book Description
Elizabeth Taylor first captured hearts as a child actress in the classic film National Velvet. But in the five decades since she first became a household name, Taylor has transcended the label of "movie star," and distinguished herself as a savvy businesswoman and a tireless humanitarian. Now, in a dazzling audio tribute, the life and times of one of America's most beloved stars is chronicled-in the words of Taylor herself, and by those who know her best.
Elizabeth Taylor: A Tribute traces the highs and lows of this Hollywood icon: her eight husbands, her critically acclaimed performances in films like Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe? And Butterfield 8, and her struggle with substance abuse. It also features highlights from rare press conferences with Richard Burton, colorful Q&A sessions with fans, and revealing one-on-one interviews. These candid clips touch on such wide-ranging subjects as acting, marriage, children, growing older, and the topic that has grown closest to Taylor's heart in recent years: the quest for a cure for AIDS.
This remarkable presentation includes accolades from some of show business's brightest stars, including Sammy Davis Jr., Michael Jackson, Tippi Hedren, Billy Bob Thornton, Carrie Fisher, Ed McMahon, and Liza Minnelli. Saluting a life that has been a stunning mixture of triumph and tragedy, charisma and compassion,
Elizabeth Taylor: A Tribute is a loving portrait of one of America's most cherished national treasures.

Chilling.......2005-10-27
This book sheds devastating new life on Joyce's life and art, and is a must read.
The infection he contracted in his teens cause Joyce's iritis and near blindness, his funny walk, sexual impotence, his wife's miscarriage and hysterectomy, his daughter's madness, his early death and much else besides.
Ulysses and Finnegans Wake are crawling with allusions to syphilis and its symptoms, as is "The Sisters" of which the first version was composed in 1904, the year in which Joyce was first treated for the disease.
Victim of a nasty joke, Joyce responded to his miseries by clowning. His masterpieces are also confessional. Ferris asks us to "suspend Ellmann's construct of Joyce as a secular humanist" and see him "as a guilt-ridden, diseased, deracinated Catholic who repented his sins" and remained a frequent church-goer.
