Great Intro. to Hiking Book.......2007-08-14

I've used this book so many times over the last 10 years, it's wearing out. Great hike descriptions for many areas of Arizona. My only gripe now is that the book is hopelessly outdated and needs a reprint. So, if you choose to buy the book you should double-check directions and call that District's Forest Ranger for updates on that trail. We've added many freeway miles since 1995 and there may be a faster way of getting to your favorite hike now. Happy trails!

Concise and interesting guide.......2004-02-27

Arizona is a great state to hike. Even without the magnificent hikes in and around the Grand Canyon, there are plenty of other trails to explore and enjoy. This book does it all! It is an exceptionally well-designed book for hikers across the spectrum. Whether you're a neophyte or have climbed Denali, this book contains all the essential information you need to tackle the hikes listed. The photos are all in color and are breathtaking! You really get a sense of what each hike will look like before you undertake it. Every hike also has a color map to accompany the text description. The maps are easy to follow and instructive.

Equally pleasing is that the authors take the time to describe each hike in extensive detail, though they are never wordy. They list the elevation gains, give succinct but necessary directions to each trailhead and provide ample analysis of the strengths/weaknesses of each trek. The book is small and light enough to carry in your backpack, if you feel the need to consult it while on the trail.

I have over 50 hiking books in my library and it would be hard to imagine a more complete, more photographically stunning or better written guide. I enthusiastically recommend this gem!

Ganci prepares you for the hikes before the descriptions........1999-01-01

The first 62 pages are devoted to preparing the hiker. A complete listing to get you started. Descriptions of geology, climate, animals, and plant life prepare you for the environment you will be hiking. I really enjoyed the geology information. Each hike is rated by time, distance, elevation gain plus an effort rating. Areas of the entire state of Arizona are covered. Less popular hikes rarely published are included too. Well done!

Good, but..........2003-04-28

The text for the descriptions of the hikes is fantastic. The directions are generally good, although the directions to a lot of the Sabino Canyon hikes is a little lacking.

What really irritates me about this book is the trail profiles. For example, the Agua Caliente trail profile begins at an elevation of 5420'. It ends at 5420'. It goes up in the middle, but it is nearly impossible to tell how far -- there are no other elevation marks besides the first and last. This pattern is repeated on a number of different profiles, and is the only thing that prevents me from giving 5 stars.

Those familiar with reading topo maps may be able to decipher altitudes, but for the rest of us the profiles are useless on many hikes.

Each trail has a profile, topo map, and other trail data including distance and difficulty. Descriptions are complete and very well done. There is a good balance of trails surrounding Tucson. Honestly though... research is outstanding! Trail history digs deep to find out how the trail names came about. Information on the Pontatoc Trail name set my mind at ease having grown up in Oklahoma. This is not your ordinary hiking guide, this guide not only gives explicit directions to trail heads and details of what to look for on the trails; Betty's thorough research gives fascinating insights into local history as well. Hiking these trails it is not uncommon to see hikers carrying this book, for it is recognized as the definitive hiking guide for this area.

the authoritative book on hiking in Tucson.......1998-05-03

I lived several years in Tucson and was an avid hiker. As such I am very familiar with the trails and mountains of which Betty Leavengood writes. Betty provides all of the necessary hiking information (distances, elevation, topo maps), but what sets this book apart from others are the historical anecdotes which are part of each trail description. Betty's keen knowledge of history brings the trails to life!

Don't waste your time or your money........2004-03-26

I could write a book as long as this one about its deficiencies. My suggestion: buy a copy of a good general wine book, subscribe to a reputable wine publication and make friends with the owner of a local wine shop with whom you can develop a relationship of trust and seek his/her advice.

Useless.......2003-10-23

I have gotten away from writting reviews, but I needed a forum to vent my dislike for this book. Fortunately for me, I borrowed a copy from the library. I cannot imagine paying anything for this book. I do not understand the point of the book. I only used listings that had websites and I found them all to charge as much as a local vendor for their products. How this is supposed to be wholesale is beyond me. For auto parts it lists only one site and they were higher than local stores. They listed a textbook selling site that supposedly charges cost, again I can do much better right here at Amazon. I was hoping to find a book telling me how to buy things at wholesale prices, then I would resell them and make extra money. This book told me how to buy things at retail prices, which I had already figured out on my own. I just cannot understand why this book was published.

This book is not for people looking for serious wholesaling.
All this information can be found by doing a search on the internet. I found very few true wholesalers. I have been able to find much better pricings at alternate sites. Find a different book to buy if you're truly looking for real wholesale companies.

If your looking for true WHOLESALE, don't buy this book.......2002-12-27

If you are looking for BARGAINS and you are incapable or just impatient to use a search engine like Google or Yahoo, buy this book. If you are looking to buy at WHOLESALE (as in having a re-seller's liscense as I was), DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. The word "wholesale" was greatly misused in the title of this book and interestingly enough, when I purchased this book (thankfully on a bargain rack) at my local book store, the lady told me that the name had changed beginning in 2003.....interesting.

It's worth the price.......2002-06-28

I paid all of about $8 for this book and, within a week, had made more than my money back in savings on purchases. Although the book misses several of my favorite bargain websites - so it only gets 4 stars instead of 5 - it lists a huge number more that I was previously unaware of.

The book is conveniently organized into sections on furniture, clothing, sporting goods etc, with a page devoted to each website or catalog under each heading. Given the huge number of websites and catalogs out there, it's useful to have a book like this to help sift through them.

NOT something I can recommend..........2001-12-29

a book that required gritted-teeth to complete.

If you were expecting a Dava Sobel style (Longitude) book of fascinating insight and drama, you will be deeply disappointed.

The author wanders randomly through 17th century gardening, seemingly without direction or interest.

If you expected to see HOW Mr Fairchild did things, you won't get it. If you expected explanations on the methods used, you won't get it. If you expected even rudimentary paragraphs on the sex organs of plants or a light-weight explanation of SAP flow, once again, you won't find it. If you wanted endless vague descriptions of people long dead, then this book is for you.

The final few pages top of an execrable book by being blatently pro-GM, despite most intelligent people having grave misgivings on the directions being taken.

I cannot recommend the book unless you already have a detailed knowledge of gardening and 17th century Britain. But then you don't need this book either.
