5 out of 5 stars Perfect for visual id of blooms.......2007-01-16

Great in the field, and absolutely perfect because it's organized by BLOOM COLOR.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful drawings, excellent reference.......2007-01-11

I bought this book because I own other Dwelley illustrated books, and I've become a fan and practitioner of botanical art and illustration. I wonder what this writer/artist/botanist is doing these days, as this book was originally written years ago. But it's as fresh and helpful today with incisive descriptions that point out each flower's differences from similar ones.

Just a nice, nice little book.

Seattle straddles and sprawls across waterways, around lakes, over hills, and along miles of coast. Spread out over numerous communities, connected by tunnels, highways, and bridges, it can be a confusing place for newcomers, but it doesn't have to be. Richie Unterberger employs easy-to-use maps, concise prose, and a judicious selection of travel information to help you feel comfortable in Seattle. As the title implies, it's a tiny book--less than six inches tall and four inches wide--fitting inconspicuously into pocket or purse, but it's a fount of Seattle wisdom. There are chapters on all the major neighborhoods, from Lake Washington to Capitol Hill to Downtown; listings of accommodations, cafes, restaurants, and bars; sections on the performing arts, gay nightlife, festivals, sports, and activities for kids, plus shops and galleries; and a chart on climate, with average temperatures and monthly rainfall. It also contains the basics on getting to Seattle; getting around the city by metro, monorail, car, or ferry; and the best Web sites for surfing Seattle on the Internet. An ideal primer for incoming University of Washington freshmen, business travelers, or city weekenders, the Mini Rough Guide accomplishes a lot in a compact package. --Stephanie Gold

Book Description

INTRODUCTION The sparkling waterside city of Seattle is one of America's newest, and most attractive, metropolises. Laced with parks and lakes, the "Emerald City" is almost perfectly sited between rugged mountains and sylvan islands, at the northwest corner of the contiguous "lower 48" states. One of America's most livable cities, Seattle is packed with scenic hills and winding streets, with an appealing array of public artworks and outdoor markets. Its central core, narrowly saved from the wrecking ball by popular outcry, has been converted into a series of colorful historic districts, which also hold the city's best arts, shopping, and nightlife.

Before the rise of the high-tech economy, Seattle's years as a thriving port, relying on the timber industry for its well-being, did little for its national image; neither did its role as home to the enormous University of Washington, or hosting a world's fair - even one which left Seattle with its most prominent icon, the Space Needle. The city did not really make headlines until the early 1990s, when a few key companies like Starbucks and Microsoft, along with the subcultures they generated, made Seattle a household name. Perhaps equally important was the advent of grunge music, with Seattle as its nominal birthplace, which led to the meteoric rise of seminal bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam.

Buoyed by the go-go late-1990s economy, it seemed that the good times might never end, and that this once-obscure city in the Pacific Northwest might finally rival the likes of San Francisco and LA in West Coast prominence. Unfortunately, the main thing Seattle turned out to have in common with those Californian giants was its propensity for earthquakes, which manifested itself most recently in February of 2001, when a tremor shook the town to its core. More importantly, the bursting of the dot-com bubble, and national recession, hit Seattle like a tsunami, and the city's economic fortunes increasingly began to resemble its winter weather: dark and dreary. Even so, the countless museums, shops, cafés, and hotels that were built on the wave of the 1990s remain in place - and they're increasingly affordable for visitors, since the local recession put the brakes on price hikes.

For all its arriviste character, Seattle is neither overly dynamic nor a 24-hour party zone, and those expecting the throbbing pulse of a New York or Tokyo will definitely be underwhelmed. While its museums are reasonable, its theater scene vibrant, and its café culture unmatched in the US - offering social centers where coffee-drinking, avant-garde decor, and lively performances meld in one artsy pot - the overall mood of the city is decidedly low-key, requiring time to fully appreciate. In fact, Seattle is best experienced on an itinerary that puts as much emphasis on nature hikes, neighborhood strolls and ferry rides as it does on traditional sightseeing and untamed nightlife.

4 out of 5 stars great book to keep in a backpack.......2001-08-03

On it's own, this book is too tiny to help anyone who's visiting seattle for more than a day. It has a paragraph or two about the most common attractions, restaurants, parks, etc. However, since it has great, detailed maps, and it's so small, it's great to tuck in a backpack. When I have friends come to visit, I give it to them to carry around during the day- it's wonderful to consult to find a good spot to grab a lunch, or to be reminded what sights there are to see in whatever neighborhood they're in. If you have a bigger guidebook that you normally use, this is a great, portable supplement.

5 out of 5 stars Great cultural tidbits!.......2000-10-18

One of the reasons why I use this book is beacause it has wonderful tidbits and stories about the people and places that influence the Seattle scene. The book is easy to read and can give travelers a quick review on Seattle customs. Descriptions of the restaurants are thorough and offer suggestions of affordable places to grab a quick bite or sit down for a luxorious meal. The authors are honest about the social mix of people found here in the city...providing a section that talks about the areas populated and visited by the gay community. The small book can easily fit into the palm of your hand and is petite enough to fit into any small side pocket of travel gear - a handy feature for the frequent traveler! I reccommend this book in combination with the Lonely Planet: Seattle book and the Fodors Compass guide for Washington (state, that is).

1 out of 5 stars The Party Hack Speaks!.......2001-04-27

In his book, 'Post-Soviet Russia', the famous historian Roy Medvedev writes about the perilous course Yeltsin drove the country with his modernization program, bitterly described as "Shock Therapy", amongst Russians. And he also describes many of the figures who sway political power amongst Russian voters. Medvedev portrays Communist party chief, Gennady Zyuganov as kind of a dullard, who only sways power because of the fact, no other Communist leader has arisen, that has any sort of abilities. Medvedev says that Zyuganov has very little, if any, knowledge of Russia's past, and buys into laughable esoteric theories such as this, "the World is run by a select group of individuals" (sort of a New World Order Conspiracy type theory). His description of Gennady Zyuganov couldn't be closer to the truth than if God had wrote it!

But that's what Roy Medvedev wrote about Zyuganov in general. Let's occupy ourselves with Zyuganov's petty attempt at describing his own country's history (keeping in mind he knows very little about Russian history). His description of Perestroika, and Communist terminology, is absolutely hilarious. To elaborate, anyone who studies Gorbachev, and Gorbachevism, will come to understand that Gorbachev could be described as a 'neo-Bukharinist'. However, in his petty, and uneducated way , Zyuganov refers to Gorbachev as a 'neo-Trotskyite'. How could Gorbachev in any way be described as a 'neo-Trotskyite'? Leon Trotsky, as Isaac Deutscher explains in his masterful biography of Trotsky, advocated virtually everything Stalin advocated; collectivization, super-industrialization, and revolutionary expansionism (although Stalin briefly had to condescend to Bukharin's level, and pretend he was in favor of 'socialism in one country'). Conversely, Mikhail Gorbachev, in a move that Nikolai Bukharin would likely have favored (a narrow minded, nationalist type of action), allowed all of eastern-Europe to fall into the hands of the liberal bourgeoisie. The Russian Communist "Chief" Zyuganov should have refered to Gorbachev as a 'neo-Bukharinst'.

He also takes a stab at literary theory as well. He writes that Russian's, read many of the writings of American authors, such as Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, and Twain. He says this forms some sort of dichotomy with America because we read the works of Tolstoy, Gogol, and Chekhov. What direction was he going exactly when he said that? Does he have such an inferiority complex, that he thinks Americans percieve Russians as some sort of cultural miscreants who are unable to comprehend mathematics, or able to read books? What point was he trying to prove exactly!

From beginning to end, this book makes very little sense, there's no continuity from one chapter to the next, and his life is of absolutely no interest to anybody, primarily because he was basically some low-level functionary from 1965 to 1991. If you can find an inexpensive copy at some flea market, go ahead and buy this book, but don't pay any more than $... for this book, you'll learn more reading 'Sports Illustrated' or 'Low Rider.'

4 out of 5 stars The new Russian Communism.......2000-02-09

In 1992, Communism was declared dead in Russia. The Communist Party, itself, was banned. Massive privatization, foreign investment, unbridled capitalism...this was the cure-all for Russia's (and the world's) ills. A few years of this treatment, and Russia will soar into prosperity. So everyone thought.

In 2000, the Communist Party is the largest in Russia. Many educated people from all over the Russian political spectrum have united under the electoral leadership of the Communists. Even the so-called "democrats" and "reformers" in the Kremlin are forced to plagarize, in words if not deeds, the Communist program and speak of things like "social justice", "strong statehood", and a "regulated economy". The rhetoric of '92 is dead and buried. Only corrupt electoral practices and widespread fear-mongering by Russia's state run media have prevented a major electoral victory by the reborn Communists.

More than anyone else, the man responsible for this is Gennady Zyuganov. This book is a collection of his articles and pamphlets. It explains the ideology of today's Russian Communists, and is very useful in understanding the current Russian political scene.

Reading Zyuganov's program, you can see how his party has seized the moral and intellectual high ground in Russia's political battlefield. This man is not a neo-Stalinist like his accusers make him out to be. The achievements, as well as the shortcomings, of the Soviet past are dealt with fairly and honestly. Likewise, Zyuganov's vision of his country's future and its place in the world is one of the most thoughtful and inspiring put forth by any politician of any nation.

Any American interested in Russian politics or history should read this book. The editor, Vadim Medish, did a fine job of adding footnotes to certain passages that require further informtion for a non-Russian to comprehend. Zyuganov himself also wrote an excellent (though brief) introduction for his American readers. Only four stars because it is a collection of writings from throughout the '90s rather than a complete work from beginning to end. Having said that, it was still a treat to read.

                1 out of 5 stars As a veterinarian, wouldn't recommend this book........2005-02-25

It appears the author himself gave one of the 5 star reviews. I found this book to be lacking in content that I found interesting or moving to the reader. The author does express a deep love for his pets, however this isn't a book about veterinary medicine. I got the impression he doesn't enjoy being a veterinarian. Little is said about his life working as a vet and bonding with patients. As a veterinarian myself I was disappointed and would not give this to my clients. For anyone who has read this, veterinarians in general do not recommended letting FIV cats outside, nor purchasing pets from pet stores. The author also mentions some issues of anger management and for this reason my name has been altered a bit.

5 out of 5 stars Written by one animal lover for other animal lovers........2003-09-09

Dr. Cunningham takes us on an autobiographical journey with the animals in his life from four years of age through his ups and downs of veterinary school and into his work as a nighttime emergency vet. In a forthright style he describes the tribulations of his life as a young veterinary student trying to follow both the system and his conscience.

A gentle soul, with a level of devotion and love for his patients beyond the call, he regales us with stories about "One Step" the one legged cockatiel, and tugs at our hearts us with the story of his beloved Boston terrier "Pug."

This is a great book for all animal lovers, easy to read and hard to put down, I finished it the afternoon that I got it, with warmth in my heart and tears in my eyes. Thank you Dr. Cunningham!

5 out of 5 stars Sleeping With Angels.......2003-02-27

Thank you so much for giving me a copy of your book. I can't express how much it helped me with the loss of Sophie. Nobody really understands how difficult it is to lose an animal family member unless they have experienced the closeness that Sophie and I shared. Few people have as deep a relationship with their " pets" as we had. It helped me greatly to read about your love for your animals. It made me unde4rstand that I am not alone in loving my animals as much as I do and in the immense sorrow I have in losing them.

                Dr. Cunningham,
It's hard for me to confront people with certain feelings because I don't want to make them or myself uncomfortable, but I wanted to let you know how deeply your book touched me. I sat up until I finished every last page and I wanted to read it again. It made me look at things a little bit closer and a lot different.
When it comes to animals I know I share the same feelings as you. Somehow it's like you reached into my mind and heart and said all the things I've never been able to find the words to say.
Your book has touched my heart more than I could ever explain. I know it will do the same for a countless amount of people.
I just wanted to thank you for sharing an incredible experience with me. I

It's hard to imagine how the designs in this book would be useful. They are not very good drawings as such things go and they are not particularly representative of the Art Nouveau period.

A Dover reprint of old public domain material that perhaps should not have been revived. Save your money, there are better sources out there for animal jewelry designs.

5 out of 5 stars Just the book I was looking for...........2000-03-22

'Annie's Garden Journal' was like reading someone's diary. I've felt all the same emotions Annie writes about, and some of them were painful, but I could laugh about it! I read this book in 3 separate sittings, didn't want it to end! I'm glad to see that she's working on another book, I'll be sure to get it too!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent by a thoughful artist.......1999-09-26

I thought this was an excellent effort by a clearly thoughtful author. The author is obviously human which comes out in this book.

3 out of 5 stars Sometimes funny, pretty pages, and interesting........1999-06-26

I enjoyed the honesty of the book and how the author shared her life with her readers. Honesty is a quality not often found in authors, especially new ones. I'm eagerly awaiting Annie's next book, and interested in how Bill's chiropractic career is going.

4 out of 5 stars FUN AND EASY READING.......1999-06-06

If you want an easy book to read that will make you smile this is a pretty good book. I did get some help for my roses, and I really enjoyed this book a lot.

                2 out of 5 stars Mildly entertaining.......1998-08-11

This is a little on the juvenile side. But does provide a few laughs. Don't buy it, borrow it.

I met Mel in L.A. in October and talked to him about his book. As promised, I told him that I would read it when I got back home. As an actor, I was most interested in the techniques and preparation used by Nolte. I am amazed at the incredible amount of work he puts into his role research. He is a true inspiration! Mel, email me when you get a chance.

5 out of 5 stars It is Nick Nolte - from the inside OUT!.......1999-09-01

One of the best profiles ever. Written with insight based on personal experience. Nolte comes off as an enormously complex individual - yet Weiser makes everything about him crystal clear. I have read it twice, and I'll probably read it one more time, just before heading for the next Nick Nolte movie!

I enjoy good movies so I found this book to be the perfect summer read. It's funny, and witty, and full of surprises about Nick and his Hollywood associates. I had no idea the actor was so dedicated -- and so much fun to be around!

Ever wonder why craziness and trouble seem to go hand-in-hand with greatness? Why so many famous artists spend more than their share of time embroiled in scandal and controversy? Mel Weiser has masterfully taken on this ages-old conundrum by sharing many of his most private and treasured moments with his long-time friend Nick Nolte. "Caught in the Act" is a sumptuous 7-course portrait that follows the complex Nolte from his palatial homes in California and Florida to the hallowed chambers of the Holocaust Memorial in Washington to the star-studded sets in Paris for the filming of "Jefferson in Paris". The story is carefully crafted around Weiser and Nolte's intimate 10-month collaboration on the film. When the walks on the beach, the jet-setting, the limousines, the quiet moments alone with Nolte, and eventually, the filmiing all come to an end, Weiser leaves us with a man desperately struggling to maintain his freedom -- from obligations, from distractions and even from his own human fraility -- so he can be completely true to his art. "Caught in the Act" is an honest and revealing expose of an artist at work. But, be warned -- start the book early in the evening and fasten your seal belt because you won't be able to put this fast and exciting read down!

                    4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......1999-06-29

I am a Nick Nolte enthusiast and am most impressed with his acting skill. When I learned there was a book about Nick, I made a point of obtaining it. I was "not" disappointed. The book gives insight into the "man", the "real" Nick as opposed to the "reel" Nick I've admired. The author has done Nick fans a great service by writing this book and sharing humourous, honest (both negative and positive) information about the "real" Nick and as a result, I believe, at least as far as this fan is concerned, Nick's wishes have been realized. Here's one fan who now sees him as a man rather than some fantasy movie star. I have a better understanding of Nick himself and believe I would be better able to interact with him if I were every lucky enough to meet him. I'm still a fan of Nick's, warts and all.
