    Book Description

A well-written contribution to the literature on the subject, and will interest both the historically minded tourist and, as a reference book, the scholar. WAR IN HISTORY A comprehensive and concise guide to all medieval English castles of which something can still be seen today, ranging from the massive keeps which still dominate the landscape to grassy earthworks and Border pele towers, and spanning the centuries from the Norman Conquest to the accession of the Tudors. English Castles contains over five hundred main entries in county order, each giving a brief history and description of the castle. A short introduction supplies the historical background to the explosion of castle-building in the middle ages, and there is a glossary covering all aspects of castles in some detail. Full Ordnance Survey map references.

    5 out of 5 stars A Highly Accessible Reference.......2002-11-12

This is a very unassuming, but perfectly nice book. Despite tackling a subject that has been done to death, Adrian Pettifer still manages to bring charm and interest to each subject.

This is a very reader-friendly book. Descriptions are bite-sized, so the book can be picked up and put down at a moment's notice. Whole counties can be skipped, or it can be devoured cover to cover, depending on your need and interest. Refreshingly unlike many books of this type, it is logically organized--alphabetically by county, and by castle name within each county. Useful ancillary information includes a short history of castle development, a small but legible map of the counties of England, an extremely informative glossary, an abbreviated bibliography, and a site index to aid in finding locations on the Ordnance Survey grid, just in case you decide to visit.

County sections begin with a brief overview and end with a short listing of nearby sites that have not been treated in detail. Descriptions of each castle are typically a page or less, but usually include something about the surrounding geography, style of structure, outstanding architectural features, accessibility, and opening hours.

The several monochrome photographs are unremarkable, particularly in light of the fact that many other books on the subject are chock full of color photos.

However, the hidden treasure in this book is that in over 3 dozen instances, a plan view drawing of the castle and environs is included. Labeled rooms, land forms, and out-buildings provide a much more intimate idea of what life inside was really like than any number of exterior photos could do.

Because I have this book mainly for genealogical research, the information I find most helpful and fascinating is historical: when each castle was built and by whom, who lived in it or conquered it, what its current condition is, and what part it played in history. Dates and historical anecdotes are abundant, and the cast of characters reads like a 'Who's Who' of England in the mid- to late-middle ages.

The next best thing to living there, this book should definitely be in the library of every Anglophile, researcher, and castle hunter.

      Book Description

Christopher Mayhew gives a fascinating account of his early life at Oxford and the attraction of communism--so common among many of his contemporaries--and of his visit to the Soviet Union which was followed by disillusionment and the beginning of his strong anti-communist beliefs. After war service and entry into Parliament he was marked-out as a potential high-flyer and served as Personal Private Secretary to Ernest Bevin at the Foreign Office. The book's major importance begins in this period as it highlights Britain's role in the early Cold War years and shows how Britain was the first to take up the offensive to rebut Soviet propaganda and to try to further worldwide belief in Western social democracy.

                    Book Description

Finding the North Pole has Dr. Cook's own story of his discovery, April 21, 1908 and the story of Commander Peary's discovery, April 6, 1909, together with the marvelous record of former arctic expeditions.

Not only the people of the United States of America, but the whole civilized world were electrified by the announcement on September 1, 1909, through the public press that dispatches had been received from Dr. Frederick A. Cook, claiming that he had the great honor, on April 21, 1908, of reaching the long-sought-for goal, the physical North Pole of the earth.

Nor had the resulting excitement subsided before Commander Robert E. Peary, U.S.N. cabled to the Associated Press on September 5, 1909, that he had planted the Stars and Stripes upon the North Pole on April 6, 1909. The sensation was without parallel in the history of polar discovery. Where men had for centuries striven in vain it suddenly was told to the world that two Americans had independently achieved the supreme goal of their ambitions.

Nothing can be more interesting or inspiring than the story of the men who have braved the hardship and perils of the Arctic regions, and apart form Dr. Cook's report of his expedition, this book contains interesting accounts of Peary's and other important polar discoveries and experiences.

The Introduction was written by George W. Melville, Rear Admiral U.S. Navy (Retired), the survivor of three arctic expeditions who was given a gold medal by Congress for his distinguished services. He was a member of the DeLong Expedition, and when the “Jeannette” was crushed in the ice, marched with part of the crew to the coast of Siberia at the mouth of the Lena River. He led an expedition to search for DeLong and found the relics of the ill-fated leader. Admiral Melville is one of the most experienced Arctic explorers and is an authority of the first rank on the subject of Arctic travels.

1 out of 5 stars The original is much better.......2002-04-02

This is a facsimile copy of a very common 1909 "book" cheaply produced in 1909 and rushed to market to cash in on the sensation of the Cook hoax. In fact, the facsimile method shows up in some broken text but mostly in the poor photo quality. I have scanned and restored (digitally) many photos from the (1909) original so I know they can be made into decent prints. However, when this arrived I could tell that the publisher spent no time or effort restoring images - they are simply washed out facsimiles.

Used but original edition of "Finding The North Pole" are so common they just about drop out trees if you look on the used market or even ebay, so I can't fathom why this was put back in print. There can't be much demand for it as it was a hastily assembled venture of sensational and inaccurate information. The publisher simply couldn't wait to rush something to print in 1909 when Cook tried to claim he had miraculously reached the Pole before the Peary expedition. Shortly after publication, in fact, Cook was run out of town when his "data" was called a "childish attempt at cheating" by the scientists who examined it.

Mark Twain said that "A lie can travel halfway around the world in the time it takes the truth to put on its shoes". This book was a perfect testament to that clever observation in 1909. One wonders why the lie has to be put back on the market 90 years later. Maybe not everyone reads Twain?

This reprint is probably useful to researchers who want to appreciate what misinformation was presented to the "man on the street" during the brief 1909 "polar controversy" without contracting mildew from an original.

                            Book Description

The beloved tale of a family carving out a new life on the American frontier. They made a home on Birdsong Creek, back in the 1980's, out in the Texas wilderness where a man and a woman could build a dream. These were people who took their joy, their courage, their greatness from the land. There was Ma and Pa and little Arliss--and Travis, the fourteen-year-old whose father had left him to take care of things, and protect his mother and small brother while Pa was away driving a herd of cattle up to Abilene. It was hard work: plowing, chopping wood, tending the garden, hunting for food, and trying to keep Arliss in line. It was too big a job for a boy to do alone. It took that boy and a big, ugly, yellow dog who showed up out of nowhere one night--a dog that would bring them love and laughter and, in the end, a terrible heartache. Old Yeller is more than just an account of a boy's love for his dog, more than just a tale of frontier life. It is a powerful journey into the heart and emotions of a boy faced with decisions that lift him from childhood to manhood. Evocative, touching, powerful-Old Yeller is a classic tale of challenge, adventure and love.

5 out of 5 stars Who hasen't read this great book?.......2007-09-15

I actually got a few chuckles out of this book as well as quite a few tears at the end (who DOESN'T know what happens in the end?) of coarse. From what I can remember about this book, is that you can actually UNDERSTAND the speaking and of their way of life [to a certain extent(thanks Mr. Rayburn)] which makes reading it a whole lot easier. A must-read. For all ages (I think).

Old Yeller is the beautiful, touching story of a boy and his big "yeller" dog.

When Travis's father goes on a cattle drive, Travis takes over the farm. He takes on a big task and is furious to find a big, one-eared, yellow dog eats thier meat, plays in their drinking water, and runs away when his family is in dire need of help. But Old Yeller proves himself when he saves Travis's litttle brother, Arliss, from a mad mother bear.

I loved reading Old Yeller because the story became real. I love dogs and it was amazing how detailed the story was. It was touching to read about how close Travis and Old Yeller were brought together.

Old Yeller is a classic novel everyone can read. Fred Gipson tells about the love and loyalty the characters possess for one another. I highly recommend this touching story that filled me with emotion and made my day forever.

The book Old Yeller is about a boy named Travis and he was left in charge of the farm and duties while Pa went on a cattle drive to Kansas. One random day a stray dog showed up at Travis's and wrecked a fence. When Travis found out about what the dog did he wanted to shoot the dog, but Little-Arliss wouldnt let him. At the time Travis didnt want a dog he wanted a horse. Soon to find out he fell in love with the stray and named it Old Yeller. Old Yeller helped out a lot around the farm. He helped watch out for raccoons in the corn fields, he also saved Travis from wild hogs. One day a man came to the cabin to claim Old Yeller. When the man found out where Pa was and how Old Yeller really helped the family he let them keep the dog. Later on in the story Old Yeller gets sick. To find out how he got sick, what has to happen to the dog in the end, if Pa comes home, and to read all the adventures of Old Yeller, Travis, Little-Arliss and the family...Read Old Yeller. I highly recomend it!!!!!!

                              J. Paul Getty bought his first classical antiquity-a small terracotta sculpture-at auction in London in 1939. Over the next four decades, he became a passionate collector, and in the 1950s he created a trust for "the diffusion of artistic and general knowledge." Building on that early
foundation, successive antiquities curators at the Getty Museum have amassed a collection that now contains more than fifty thousand ancient objects. In lively prose accompanied by a full-color photograph of each object, this handbook of the antiquities collection presents nearly two hundred of the
Getty Museum's most important pieces. Spanning thousands of years as far back as the third millennium B.C. through the third century A.D.--the Getty antiquities collection encompasses Cycladic, Greek, Etruscan, South Italian, Roman, and Romano-Egyptian cultures. It includes one of the finest
assemblages of ancient Greek vases in the United States; monumental marble sculptures and diminutive bronzes; Greek and Roman gems; and Hellenistic silverware, jewelry, and glass.

                              4 out of 5 stars A great book but..........2003-04-20

First of all the physical description of the book. It's slightly too large for a pocket type guide. The pages are glossy with excellent photos.

Considering the collection that this work covers however it is way too thin. The selected approximately 200 "important" pieces. I'm not sure how they determined the importance of these pieces as there was no discernable pattern. It was broken up into the age the pieces were from (with a fair smattering from each period) but that appears to be the only categorization. For each piece there is a brief description ranging from a line next to the picture to a page long.

Sadly this gives no indication of Mr. Getty's personal tastes and which items he preferred. Otherwise a great book.

                                        Book Description

Matilda of Scotland was the daughter of Malcolm II of Scotland and his Anglo-Saxon queen Margaret. Her marriage to Henry I of England in 1100 thus brought to Henry, descendant of the conquering Normans, a direct and politically desirable link to Matilda's ancestor Alfred the Great. Her life makes clear that Matilda had outstanding talents. She was educated in the exclusive convents of Romsey and Wilton, a grounding which enabled her to further the literate court culture of the twelfth century, and under her control was a substantial demesne that allowed her to exercise both lay and ecclesiastical patronage. In the matter of ruling, she was an active partner in administering Henry's cross-channel realm, served as a member of his curia regis, and on occasion acted with what amounted to vice-regal authority in England while Henry was in Normandy. Chroniclers of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries often refer to her as Mathilda bona regina, or Matildis beatae memoriae, and for a time she was popularly regarded as a saint. Huneycutt's study shows how Matilda achieved such acclaim, both because the political structures of her day allowed her the opportunity to do so and because she herself was skilled at manipulating those structures. This study will be valuable to those interested in not only English political history, but also to historians of women, the medieval church, and medieval culture. LOIS HUNEYCUTT is professor of history at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
