Wrong country.......2003-05-22
This book is written by a British writer for a British audience. It is of limited value in the US. Many of the trees shown are not available here. The language is of course British and the meanings of some of the words used are not readily apparent to an American reader. The book does contain good information (for a Brit).
Good Choice.......2000-05-01
This books looks to be an excellent choice for someone having difficulty deciding what sort of trees to plant. It's got what you want - pictures of lots of different trees, advice on tree shapes, sizes, climate soils etc. Also nicely presented.

Best Santa Barbara guidebook available.......2007-02-15
I live in Santa Barbara, and this is the best guidebook that I have found. It is a bit out of date, as some restaurants and even hotels have closed. A new edition is in order, but until then, this book is very useful for residents and visitors alike.
Book Description
The stories in Old Indian Days focus mainly on Sioux bands of the Upper Midwest in prereservation times, when contact with whites was minimal. Charles A. Eastman, a mixed-blood Sioux who earned renown as the author of nearly a dozen books, was on home ground in writing about the traditional life of his people, their customs, warm family relations, reverence for animals, and struggle for survival. Originally published in 1907, Old Indian Days alludes to historical figures like Little Crow and Tamahay and to an event that Eastman experienced as a small boy, the 1862 Sioux Uprising in Minnesota.
The excitement of intertribal warfare and the warrior's lone exploits, as well as his more tender side in trying to fathom the mysteries of womanhood and the eternal are seen in "The Love of Antelope," "The Madness of Bald Eagle." "The Singing Spirit," and other stories. Women enter into these evocations of Indian life most memorably. In "The Peace-Maker" a Sioux woman takes a valiant stand against the consumption of whiskey. Other heroines, including Blue Sky and She-Who-Has-a-Soul, are instrumental in bringing peace between tribes and between races. "Winona, the Woman-Child" and "Winona, the Child-Woman" are among those stories revealing the everyday life of the Indian woman, her rearing and education and influence.
In her introduction to this Bison Book edition, A. LaVonne Brown Ruoff, a professor of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago, examines the extent to which the stories are original creations and reinterpretations of existing oral accounts.

The chief called his counselors together and set before them the dream of the priest, whose prophecy, he said, was already being fulfilled in part by the westward movement of the buffalo. It was agreed that they should lay up all the dried meat they could obtain; but even for this they were too late. The storms were al- ready at hand, and that winter was more severe than any that the old men could recall in their traditions.
Book Description
A masterwork of history-restored to print and made available for the first time in trade paperback. In this massive, compellingly readable book, America's preeminent biographer/historian brings to life Europe's richest, most powerful family, a 400-year dynasty that developed the world's most technologically advanced weapons (from cannons to submarines to anti-aircraft guns); provided arms to generations of German leaders, including the Kaiser and Hitler; operated private concentration camps during the Nazi era; survived conviction at Nuremberg; and wielded enormous influence on the course of world events. William Manchester's account of the rise and fall of the Krupp dynasty is history as it should be written-alive with all its terrifying power.
Customer Reviews:
For such a monumental work never to become boring, is quite a feat.......2007-10-18
It covers a lengthy span of time in Krupp saga. Its 900 pages have space for all kinds of detail, from the purely familiar and personal to the more general of German customs and idiosyncrasies, and finally -to me the most relevant and interesting- the historical. The historical from the ground perspective, is what I mean, not the ideological or political.
There's a lot of merit in this author to keep the interest along so many pages. Some of these pages are of great style, elsewhere the interest plummets a little, which is totally understandable.
One paradox in the book that can summarize the story of Krupp is the difference between the way the greatest Krupp (Alfred) treated a poor and foreign woman appealing for help, and the way his great-grandson, would treat people like her in his not-known-well-enough private concentration camps. For Alfred it was: "Necessity knows no law", a fitting motto. Exactly the opposite would be during the Nazi times. Here's a sample of great writing: "Yet there was a time when Alfred's great-grandson not only abandoned helpless women from abroad, but exploited them, and then left them to a doom far more unspeakable than the turbid gray waters of the Rhine. The bonfire of the Third Reich was rapidly being reduced to embers. No sources of manpower were left and so, necessity knowing no law, Krupp turned to girls, to mothers, and, in the end, to the construction of a private concentration camp for children."
A must read, for the fine style in which it describes important historical subjects that must be known, the day-to-day lives of the people who lived those turbulent -to say something- times. Let's not forget those horrors. And don't try to understand them, just beware how low the human race can fall.
Krupp: the Epitome of the Military-Industrial Complex........2007-02-27
William Manchester's "The Arms of Krupp" is an epic look at the company, personalities, dynasty, and the nation that formed one of the world's most infamous armaments manufacturers.
From the earliest records of a Krupp in the late 16th century, the Krupp family profited off the suffering an misery of others when Arndt Krupp bought land in Essen for a bargain following an outbreak of bubonic plague. It was a pattern that played out again and again up to the Second World War; but the later tragedies the family profited off was human conflict rather than disease.
Throughout the narrative, the reader is introduced to a long list of eccentric and sometimes brutal 'Cannon Kings': from manure-loving Alfred whose genius launched die Firma into its infamous glory, the scandalous Fritz, the robotic Gustav, to the WWII-era slaveholder Alfried. At times, readers will envy the early Krupps for their dedication to die Firma, while in other instances the audience will be appalled by the Krupps' cold-blooded arms dealings that led to the deaths of so many of their own countrymen.
Manchester is keen on casting the house of Krupp as a symbol of modern Germany; as their trials and boons both seemed to coincide in recent history. Furthermore, "The Arms of Krupp" is an excellent source for insight on the pre-WWI arms race and the post-Versailles rearmament that other histories of the period overlook. Over all, it is a highly recommended book for anyone interested in the history of Germany and the barons of modern warfare.
Excellent book with annoying features.......2006-12-25
This book is excellent for all the reasons mentioned in the other reviews. What I found REALLY annoying was the author's use of German quotes. He provides quotes, in German, usually somewhat abbreviated as shown by the use of ellipses, and then provides the translation of the entire quote in English. Since most of his readers can't read German, and the entire quote is NOT in the German version, why include them? More frustrating are the German phrases that he quotes and doesn't translate, leaving us to guess at their meanings.
The Family That Armed Germany.......2006-10-16
William Manchester squeezes yet another masterpiece into just under a thousand pages (not counting index!) For four centuries one name was associated with the armaments that were utilized in four major wars, creating the richest family in Europe; Krupp. Each leader of the dynasty had peculiar quirks that Manchester delights over, some were involved in sex scandals, and another ran his day to the second with pure Prussian obsessive-compulsion. Krupp innovations included the steel cannon and railroad wheel; they designed the notorious 88mm of WW II, and the descendant of that gun, the 120mm hypervelocity cannon, may be seen on U.S. tanks to this day. The driving force behind the industrialization of the Ruhr, it would be legitimate to ask if Germany were responsible for the rise of Krupp, or Krupp responsible for the rise of Germany. Like so many others, Alfried Krupp fell under Hitler's spell, spurring him to run private concentration camps in order to produce more weapons. Intrafirm Krupp memoranda from this period begin to use terms such as Sklavenarbeiter (slave labor), Sklavenmarkt (the slave market), Sklavenhalter (the slave-holder, Alfried Krupps), and Judenmaterial (Jewish livestock.) The Nuremberg Trials follow, and Krupp walks away almost unscathed, to continue in business until the company foundered in the 1960s. German history and the Krupp lineage is inextricable, and there is no better writer to bring such a unique saga to life.
The Arms of Krupp.......2006-03-03
The ultimate story of the KanonenKonig. I highly recommend this book to anyone intersted in the industrial history of the Ruhr. The best work on the rise of Germany available.

Book Description
The world would be a pretty drab place without flowers. Their bright cheery colors help make our natural environment a more delightful place to be. But flowers in all their beautiful variations didn't evolve just for the viewing pleasure of the later-developing human race. What are flowers really for? As botanist and popular science writer William Burger makes clear in this enchanting book, the quick and simple answer is: sex. Burger emphasizes the essential role that flowers play in life's evolutionary scheme. Their bright colors and alluring shapes represent a strategy for attracting insects and inducing animals to help with pollination. This constant intermingling is nature's way of perpetuating the species and encouraging variety, so as to protect against disease and unpredictable environments. Flowers are the supreme example of nature's reproductive exuberance, ensuring the persistence of life against an onslaught of destructive forces. More significantly, Burger points out, flowers are the fundamental energy resource for most of the biosphere. Since they energize themselves by capturing the energy of sunlight, they provide a vital link in the chain of life, especially for animals and humans, which depend on other organisms to nourish and energize them. Without the existence of flowering plants, human survival would be in jeopardy. Finally, Burger goes on to show the paramount importance of a few species of plants that have served not only as the basis of agriculture, but, in doing so, have enabled human civilization to thrive. Even today, in our complex technological world, it is the flowering plants that provide us with nearly all the vegetable energy that sustains us. Written with clarity, wit, and engaging enthusiasm for the marvels of our fragile ecosystem, Flowers will make you stop and smell the roses, with a new appreciation of their crucial role in the web of life.
Customer Reviews:
Everything You Might Have Wanted to Know about Flowers.......2006-07-28
William C. Burger's "Flowers: How They Changed the World" is certainly a labor of love. His clear and enthusiastic prose transported me back to a course in botany I had at the University of Arizona around 1970. As a zoologist I had had little contact with botany, but I had always been interested in the subject. The course I took in botany opened up this fascinating world and I now remember the hours I spent in class and in hunting flowering plants in the desert as golden. This book brought all that delight back.
From the structure of flowers, through their function, defences, evolutionary history and history related to humans and other organisms, Burger has opened the door to an enchanted world. Yet it is the world just outside, in vacant lots, woods, meadows, tropical forests, agricultural fields, yards, roadsides, deserts and swamps- in fact almost anywhere.
A naturalist can find profound interest in the weeds, wild flowers and cultivated plants described here, and thus is almost never bored. I thus recommend this volume without reservation. It will open the reader's eyes to an absolutely engrossing subject and may give them a life-long passion.
A top pick for college-level students and leisure readers who like science and gardening books.......2006-07-25
Flowers are one of the most attractive aspects of the outdoors; but they didn't evolve just for humans to appreciate. Botanist and science writer William Burger examines the role of flowers in the natural world, from how their bright colors and shapes attract and induce animals to help with pollination to how they serve as an energy resource. Chapters survey flowers, their pollinators, and how flowers have enabled ecosystems to survive in his lively blend of botanical research and wide-ranging natural history insights. A top pick for college-level students and leisure readers who like science and gardening books.

Great general reference.......2000-03-09
The book is a good, fundamental reference for flowering plants. I use it to supplement courses in botany and find it popular with my students. Indices & glossary are excellent, as are the figures for identifying features of reproductive and vegetative anatomy of plants.

Helpful Guide to the Hot Stuff.......2001-09-04
David Dewitt has put out several useful books on peppers. This guide is useful to identify the many many varities and cultivars of hot peppers. While you may not be able to find the seeds to all those cultivars, the book is very useful and the color photos are excellent. Sections divide the different classifications of peppers. If you are into peppers this book may be a necessary reference on your shelf. Also usefuls is Dewitt's book The Pepper Garden.
Review by a very satisfied customer.......2000-05-31
I have recently become interested in peppers and chilis of all types, and my thirst for knowledge on the subject led me to buy books. I have bought some 10 books on the subject, and although other books may appear more glossy and have more 'tales' or recipes (this book has neither, nor is it intended as such), this book has a wealth of colour pictures of just about every conceivable chili. Whilst not claiming to have all varieties within it, it gives a good, structured view on the pepper (capsicum) families and provides a quick and easy reference for identification and description of most varieties. Of all the books I have this is always the first I turn to for information. Well worth the money.
Fantastic book but ..........1998-02-17
After reading "The Pepper Garden" also by Dewitt and Bosland I bought "Peppers of the World: An Identification Guide". The book gives you a very good overall view of the whole pepper family on the planet. Nice photos and good descriptions. However two things are wrong.
First: For each pepper the authors should also have included a photo of the plant and the flower. Without that identification in many cases is almost impossible as many pods resemble each other very much indeed.
Second: The metric conversion chart in the back of the book is wrong. Centimeters and inches must have changed places. The way it is now a 10 inch pepper like for instance Numex Big Jim is about the lenght of a thumb!! I dont think New Mexican commercial growers would like that. Keep that in mind if the publishers are contemplating a new edition.
But otherwise - thanks for a great book which is a must for all pepper fans.

Book Description
The aim of the present work is to make a contribution to the understanding of the inner workings of the Syriac language through a study of one important corpus written in that language. The book contains four chapters on aspects of Syriac syntax. In addition, a chapter on inner-Syriac developments -- traceable owing to the fact that the Gospel of Matthew was translated several times and at different dates -- and a chapter on the process of translation from Greek into Syriac are included as well. The analysis of the language of the Syriac versions of Matthew facilitates the use of these versions in textual criticism of the New Testament. Moreover, close study of these texts allows some light to be shed on the history of the text of the Gospel.

The name's the thing in this lively romantic thriller in the Susan Isaacs tradition, a theme set up in the opening scenes when Manhattan preschool teacher Nancy Stern gets flowers from an unknown admirer. As she soon learns, however, the bouquet is not for her, and neither are the phone calls from intriguing-sounding men or the invitations to film screenings and glamorous parties. Another Nancy Stern, a celebrity journalist, has just moved into the penthouse in our heroine's building. It's enough to make a teacher who hasn't had a date in months accept one of the mistaken invitations. The man proceeds to steal her heart, and the longer she waits to tell him about the mix-up in identities, the less she wants to. But when the other Nancy Stern is killed and the murder makes the headlines, the charade is over.
Or is it? It seems the killer was confused, too--he meant to put sweet Nancy out of the picture, and it all has to do with a gaudy brooch given to her by one of her pupils, a little boy who claims his father is a pirate and has a treasure chest full of booty. This is the perfect summer read--as frothy as an incoming wave, as refreshing as a Popsicle on a hot day. If you liked Susan Isaacs's Compromising Positions, you'll love Jane Heller's Name Dropping. And on your way to pick up some extra sunblock, you'll want to add Heller's earlier caper Sis Boom Bah to your beach bag. --Jane Adams

Two Women-Two Lives-Same Name.......2006-12-14
At first Nancy Stern, a preschool teacher, is perplexed when she gets mail from Hollywood directors, English ambassadors, and American Express bills for tens of thousands of dollars appear. Then she finds out the reason-another Nancy Stern who interviews Celebraties.
Nancy decides to go with it though and when she gets a call from a man named Bill for the other Nancy she goes out on the date instead. She and Bill date for a while, but then the other Nancy Stern is found murdered and Nancy is thrown into a mystery that also involves the family of a boy in her class as well.
Who killed the other Nancy Stern and what does it have to do with the boy in Nancy's preschool class? Read Name Dropping.
Name Dropping.......2006-03-17
Possibly one of the worst book I've ever read. The whole storyline started of so well in this interesting premise of preschool teacher Nancy Stern taking on a blind date that wasn't meant for her, but was actually for the other, more glamorous, Nancy Stern that had just moved into the same building. Teacher Nancy seemed to be a stable, reasonable woman, and for this one time she acted on impulse to accept the date. But it went downhill from there, with Nancy becoming this neurotic, nagging, nosy, completely obnoxious character. Where did this drastic personality change come from? It became really bizarre when a murder was introduced into the story that took this plot in a bad direction. The men-bashing in the book was over-the-top as well, and the one guy that is propped up as the standard for men seemed way too understanding about all of the deception coming from Nancy and the fact that he would even tolerate her constant nagging is ridiculous.
The ending was so cheesy that I was constantly rolling my eyes.
It started out so well and had some potential for a fun read, but it just completely fell flat with its characters and plot. It's never a good thing when you can't stand the main character and feel no sympathy for anything that happens to her.
A Keeper Romance.......2006-02-24
Jane Heller creates a romance that really isn't too bad. We feel exactly for her characters that Ms. Heller wants us to feel. The main character is likeable and we don't hate her at any point in the novel.
The novel does drag a bit in the middle. We're done with her romance with Bill, solve the mystery!
I would read this book if I were you and other by this author.
Mediocre.......2005-08-12
I've read a few Jane Heller novels now, but there were none I liked as well as An Ex To Grind. Name Dropping is no different. The mother-daughter thing reminded me of her other novels, and it seems that she follows a pretty tight formula. The Epilogue was completely unnecessary as well, and I was anxious to get through it. Also, I didn't feel any real connection between the characters. It appears that I've had my fill of Jane Heller novels.
Name Dropping.......2005-07-29
When Nancy Stern journalist to the stars moves into the penthouse of Nancy Stern pre-school teacher extrodinaire's apartment building there is obviously a lot of confusion. Many mixed up packages, phone calls, deliveries and mail. However the biggest mix-up of all is when Nancy Stern journalist to the stars is found murdered in her apartment. It soon becomes clear that the intended victim, however, was the other Nancy Stern. Now the other Nancy must try to foil a group of jewel thieves connected to one of her pre-school students while trying to keep herself out of harms way.
Maybe I am just not a huge Jane Heller fanatic but I did not fall in love with this book as many other reviewers have. While Heller does have a breezy style of writing this book was a little too cutesy for my taste. In a mystery novel, even a chick-lit mystery there should be some semblance of credibility to it and this novel had little to none. However, on the bright side Heller's style makes her books quick and easy to read, good for a lazy day of lounging poolside.

In this collection of anecdotes of the "famous people I have known" variety, John Kenneth Galbraith lets his hair down--well, as much as a Harvard economist in his 90s might be expected to, anyway. Despite the informality, Galbraith's prose is suffused throughout with dignified precision, even at its most profane (as in his recollection of his extemporaneous evaluation of incomplete returns from the 1948 presidential election: "I think Thomas E. Dewey may well be shitting in his blue serge pants"). For the most part, Name-Dropping concerns itself with the major American statesmen from the Democratic party of the mid-20th century--Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, and Johnson--but Galbraith also shares his reminiscences of working on Adlai Stevenson's two failed campaigns against Eisenhower ("no modern politician," he writes of the experience, "had a more faithful coterie of supporters") and of Eleanor Roosevelt, "who, but for the accident of history and the prevailing constraints of gender, could have been President in her own right." On the international front, there's a brief encounter with Albert Speer, Hitler's architect and economic director, and more extended contact with Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first prime minister (Galbraith served as ambassador to India in the Kennedy administration). Name-Dropping is a slim connection of anecdotes, held together by little more than Galbraith's presence, but that is more than enough to make its behind-the-scenes history cohesive and, in its way, quietly entertaining. --Ron Hogan
Book Description
John Kenneth Galbraith, the noted economist, joined Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Deal in 1934 and served that administration during World War II in the crucial role of deputy head of the Office of Price Administration in charge of price control. His service to FDR and his relationship with Eleanor Roosevelt began a long involvement with the leaders who would define much of the course of the twentieth century: Truman, Stevenson, John F. and Jacqueline Kennedy, Nehru, Lyndon Johnson, and others at home and abroad. Drawing on a lifetime of access to many of the greatest public figures, Galbraith creates a rich and uniquely personal history of the century -- a history he helped to shape. We are invited to hear FDR on the Great Depression and World War II; Albert Speer, the Third Reich's architect and armaments minister, on the boorishness and incompetence of the Nazi leadership; John F. Kennedy, from youth to the presidency; Jacqueline Kennedy's shrewd judgments of the White House inner circle. In this clear-eyed, unsparing, and amusing look back at the world and the people he has known, Galbraith tells what these leaders did -- how they looked to him then and how they look to him now -- with unforgettable reminiscences and a rich infusion of engaging anecdotes. Name-Dropping charts the political landscape of the past sixty-five years with the dazzling insight, humor, and literary skill that mark Galbraith as one of the most distinguished writers of our time. Just some of the portraits . . . Eisenhower's brother remembered a meeting in the Oval Office at which some difficult and potentially very unpopular decision was reached. Reflecting on the expected adverse reaction, Ike had said, "It's all right. When I've explained it to the press, no one will have any clear idea what we intend to do." Kennedy's preference for plain talk did not spare his friends. Before I left for New Delhi in April 1961, we had a farewell breakfast at the White House. That morning the New York Times had a piece on the new ambassador to India; Kennedy asked how I liked it. It had been generally favorable, and I said it was all right, but I didn't see why they had to call me arrogant. "I don't know why not," said Kennedy. "Everybody else does." Nehru said that one day at Gandhi's ashram in Ahmedabad a friend and supporter sought to ease a conflict with the British Viceroy by saying, "Mahatma, you must know that Lord Irwin never makes a decision without praying over it first." Gandhi reflected on this for some minutes. Then he said, "And why do you suppose God so consistently gives him the wrong advice?" Johnson once said to me, "Did it ever occur to you, Ken, that making a speech on economics is a lot like pissin' down your leg? It seems hot to you, but it never does to anyone else." Not since have I given a speech on economics without having that metaphor in mind.

Great Read by Academic "Economist". Last Great Socialist........2002-09-12
John Kenneth Galbraith was at one time a hero of mine. Read more than 10 of his books over the years. Bought this book and read it having been a hero of mine. I urge for all people to read to this book for the sole reason to show how out of touch, "ivory tower" tenured intellectuals has misguided us.
The 20th is ending and the era of "ivory tower egghead" is coming ot a close. The preeminent egghead is Professor Galbraith and this books is a clarion call of a out of touch egghead socialist. Buy it for records.
As a former student of economics and history, only when one leaves the university does one realize none of these people have ever had a "real" job so much as working McDonald. Tenure has given them lifelong employment-what in China is called the "iron rice bowl".
Professor Galbraith has written over 30 books. However, has this man ever open a business, work at a private company, try to make a product or services that the people want and need.
Academica and Government are havens for those who want job security, lifetime employment and insulation from the marketplace and the "customer".
Professor is the ultimate egghead socialist and dreams up fantasies where everyone lives "fulfiling life" with jobs, health care, and education. The Soviet Union and China failed miserably building stagnant socialist economies and the whole world is moving from a planned economy to a market economy. This books by Professor Galbraith is a testament to "ivory tower egghead" who refuse to confront reality. Never mind the "egghead" refuses to get a real job where they have to actually work for a living.
I recommend all to buy this book. Agree or Disagree. This book is a final testament of the greatest "egghead" of them all and how the world is moving to markets and totally bypasses them and yet they continue to champion socialism and collectivism: ideas that are going the way of the dinosour.
Requiem for an old Socialist.......2000-11-02
My daughter gave me this book as a gift, I guess, because I'm an economist. I wish she hadn't. Others obviously think Galbraith's musings more than a little entertaining; I don't. He came across to me as asserting that the only people worth knowing were the ones he once served/worked with. I would rate some his ancedotes as amusing, but the flavor of the book seemed to be that of a very old man, whose core beliefs have been repudiated by history, claiming that the idea of a command economy just didn't get a fair shake. All these socialist countries just haven't done it right, and they just don't make 'em like they used to.
A Good Dose of Intellectual Humor.......2000-10-27
Name Dropping is a great high-level recap of Galbreath's insider experience as an influential 20th century statesmen. Like a grandfather recounting the salient parts of our recent American history and his career, its everything that you would not expect from an agricultural economist -- entertaining, witty, and easy to read. Highly recommended for train rides, short flights, or rainy days.
Buy This Book!.......2000-05-20
What a great read this is. Galbraith brings out a personal side of people we could only imagine exists. Of course, he reveals the same of himself. (Ever see a picture of him smiling?) The book reads quickly. In fact, my only complaint about the book is that I got so relaxed while reading it that I fell asleep too easily. (I read late at night). I'm sure, as I did, you'll be envious of Galbraith's acquaintances with the "characaters" of this book. Buy it!

A MUST for Performers!.......2001-05-30
This book is a WINNER -- I recommend it to ANYONE who sets foot onstage, or who has ever simply thought "How is British theater/TV so different from American?". While Mr Barkworth's writing style can sometimes be a little precious, the technical ideas he offers are invaluable. His thoroughly British, technical approach to stagecraft offers many wonderful practical tips and tools to help bring a performance to life. Mr Barkworth's years as a teacher at RADA are evident in his ability to concisely hit on some of the most commonly encountered stage situations, and he suggests wonderfully practical ways of preparing yourself, improving your performance, and coping with the inevitable problems faced onstage.
To help demonstrate some of his points, Mr Barkworth also offers both amusing and helpful anecdotes from his own experience, as well as some of his stage colleagues, including stalwarts such as Dames Wendy Hiller and Edith Evans.
The book is a glimpse into the world of the 20th Century London West End and a fascinating slice of history as well as a helpful technical guide. Highly recommended.

The title of the book was enticing, the cover, quite eye-catching... the author, a complete stranger. Fortunately, I decided to risk it. The book is hilarious, from prologue to epilogue. The author's style is humorous, witty, self-effacing... a truly excellent piece of writing. Name-dropping elevated to an art indeed, by an undeniable master. GIVE ME MORE WARD WALLACE, PLEASE!

A Totally Biased Review by a Long-Time Friend.......2000-02-25
Please bear in mind that I am a long-time friend of the author and am also mentioned several times in the book. Having said that, I can state that Ward Wallace has a fine writing touch and has been entertaining me with his letters from Spain for over three decades. He has been living the expatriate life in Madrid and Sotogrande, meeting world-level celebrities, and now he has put his best stories between covers where they belong. Ward's best stuff is about bull-fighting, including his own adventures in the ring. He also has some insights into famous golfers as well as Spanish dignitaries he has seen with his unreconstructed American eye. The vision of Bing Crosby suddenly materializing in a Spanish church is worth the price of the book. Ward makes fun of his own penchant for name-dropping. For all Americans who think they could have handled an adult life in another country, here is a vicarious experience. He never loses the perspective of an athlete from Hofstra College on Long Island who wound up living with his wife, Conchita, a few blocks from a great soccer stadium in Madrid. Bien hecho, amigo.
