Where are the web addresses?.......2003-08-19

I bought this book at my local CostCo recently. I was very excited about a book dedicated exclusively to the California Coast line. I'm a native Californian and enjoy driving along the coast.

First, the positives. There are some good essays in the book. In each section there are various writers who give their own personal experiences. I also like the symbols used for the places described in the book. You can get a quick idea of what the area is about. i.e. "Family coast", "Quiet coast", "Sporting coast", etc.

Now the negatives. He uses symbols effectively with the coasts but doesn't when it comes to spending money. I'm sure you've seen various travel guides with $$$ signs to give you an idea of how much something cost. In the intro he categorizes the meals and hotels as inexpensive, moderate, and expensive. But when you get to the description of each place you have to read the whole paragraph to find out which it is. $ symbols would be much easier I think. And the most important thing missing (in my opinion) is the absence of web addresses. Virtually every hotel, beach, or park has some kind of web site associated with it now. Addresses to these places would be extremely helpful. He provides phone numbers but I guess he didn't want to take the time to find the web sites of all these places. I've all these "information" lines before and usually the person on the other end is not very helpful.

For the price, it's OK I guess. But I would not recommend. There are better guides out there.

An excellent and enthusiastically recommended resource.......2003-07-20

Great book for finding the right beach for your needs.......2000-08-09

I spent about an hour looking at various books on California beaches, with an eye to one that would tell me where to go and where not. This one had the right balance of useful information, easy to follow codes (like a symbol for surfing), and accuaracy (at least based on my own opinions). One of the authors used to do this for a living for the California Coastal Commission, and it's clear that they've done their homework - they know California's beaches.

Marred by factual and spelling errors.......1998-12-13

The concept of the book is fine, but there are a number of factual errors and misspellings. For example, the book refers to a view of "Los Padres National Park". If the authors don't know the difference between a national forest and national park, one wonders what else they did'nt know in writing the book.

I sailed the Atlantic on a variety of vessels for upwards of a decade, so a history of that ocean is fascinating. This book covers the entire history, in simple but evocative language. This book is a must for cryise ships and for those who have aspirations to sail.

Nice book. A really good intro to the GSD. Really, I like the fact that the authors mention that the GSD is a great all around dog that needs something to do. They stress training, not mean training, but positive training. This dog is the ultimate dog.

Thin book with Good pictures, very nice words about GS dog very little obidience and not much about dog phsycology. No good examples. Very compact book. If you want more comprehensive info on GS dog look somewhere else. this book is just a touch up on most common topics.

This book contains just what the person contemplating getting a German Shepherd Dog needs. I've owned German Shepherds all my life and know a great deal about the breed. I couldn't put this book down!.......2001-01-12

I have been looking at getting a dog for the last six months and have just recently focused on the German Shepherd Dog. There are a ton of available books out there, and I'm sure there are many very good ones. This one caught my eye, however, becuase its co-written by "Uncle Matty", who I first saw on his PBS show "Woof! It's a dog's life". The care and love he showered the dogs on the show, especially the ones with "behaviour problems" endeared him to me from the start. He brings the same warmth and compassion to "The Good Shepherd", and includes loads of useful info as well. He is also very practical about what kind of dog the GSD is and what kind of person the owner needs to be. Honest and perceptive, this book convinced me that the German Shepherd dog is the right best friend for me!

This book has a lot of very good information of taking care of your dogs health (Although most of the advice would apply to any dog). I was particularly disappointed in the section on puppy selection which was my main reason for buying this book. Very superficial information.

Good Basic Book .......2006-09-05

This is a good basic book to learn about the German Shepherd breed in 80 pages or less. The pictures alone will convince you that this dog is not only beautiful but intelligent.

There is a brief history here about GSDs. The author clearly loves the breed (as do I) and has the credentials to support his opinions and recommendations. I also appreciated the information he provides about health issues beyond the usual complaints of hip dysplasia.

There are clearly other books written in more depth about training and feeding and no one should expect this book to do more than provide basic information on those subjects.

The dogs pictured also seem to be more the dogs bred for show rather than working dogs and there is not much discussion about the difference.

All around it is a good little book for someone interested in learning about the breed.

I've used this book to guide me, a raw beginner that did not know the difference between oil & water based paint, from painting room to room to exterior porches and windows...on and on...to the point that I'm now considered a very good painter.
Well written for the beginner, with plenty of practical information without getting too technical.

Really interesting, very informative........1999-02-21

This book is full of information of Jackie's life as a kid and adult. It has twenty-or-so black and white pictures. This book has lots of information on most of his movies. It includes all of bad things that have happened, bones that he has broken and other ways he has hurt himself over the years. I am a big Jackie Chan fan and found this book very interesting and imformitive.

Its not Faulkner or Shakespeare, but its a great little book about Jackie Chan. If you are a Jackie fan you will never get bored with this book. Its got great information, reviews, profiles, and pictures. If you love Jackie get this book.

Interesting sidelights........1998-04-30

Interesting, informal history, apparently a companion work to a documentary film, of some of the some 300,000 servicemen and women who served in, or passed through Northern Ireland in World War Two, and their hosts.

The story includes Navy, Marines, and airmen, and of course the big infantry and armored divisions, but is of particular interest in its account of the raising and training of the first modern Ranger battalion, which was born in Carrickfergus in June 1942.

The work is a little shaky in some of the details of American military history, and a bibliography and index would not have gone amiss, but it is of value nonetheless in its recounting of a meeting of cultures which has had continuing influence on Yanks and Irish alike.
