Easy-to-read, beautiful illustrations!.......1998-10-11

I weave pine needle baskets, and am doing research for a basketry class I'm teaching this month. The Pine Tree Book by Peterson is the clearest, easiest to read book on pine trees I've found so far. The material is very well organized, not too technical, and the illustrations are beyond compare! I certainly hope the publishers reprint it so I can buy a copy - I found it at my local library!

Theodore W. Scull's "100 Best Cruise Vacations" is a well-researched and well-organized book on cruising, which should prove valuable to anybody looking for an idea for their next cruise.

The first-time cruisers will undoubtedly find useful the detailed information on itinerary, the ship, passengers, officers, crew, dress codes, cabins, fare and contact info for the cruise line. One of the most useful pieces of information, in my opinion, is what exactly is or is not included in the fare price. This information could be particularly confusing for somebody leaving on their first cruise and the comprehensive info provided by Mr. Scull will help to avoid any unpleasant surprises. The information included in the itinerary section is pretty limited, but will provide necessary basics for somebody trying to decide whether the ports to be visited will be of interest to them.

The cruise veterans will definitely be able to use all of the above mentioned information, but more importantly, some of the cruises listed are on less well-known cruise lines or to not-so-usual destination. So those who have already cruised a lot just might discover a cruise or two that they have never thought of or even never heard of.

The book covers cruises on all seven continents as well as a handful of round-the-world experiences - the dream of most cruise addicts. Detailed descriptions of activities and amenities on each of the ships will definitely make the decision on which to choose considerably easier.

In view of the fact that this latest edition has been published in 2006, I found it slightly disappointing that several of the new itineraries on different cruise lines have not been included. Another useful addition would have been the deck plans or cabin plans for at least a couple of vessels.

Overall I found "100 Best Cruise Vacations" to be a useful resource for anybody trying to decide where to go next - or even for somebody who is still trying to decide whether cruising would be to their liking. Just be warned - most people get addicted after their first cruise - and if they chose the first one well, chances of getting addicted are probably close to 99%...

This is an average book. It does not capture the true character of this special man. Paul Petzoldt's life would be hard for any writer to summarize. The author should have concentrated on a more detailed introspective of this famous man. Too much writing was centered on certain events that do not actualize his true persona. Yet, the author does reflect a reverance for Paul's achievements that are well deserved. An easy reading book.

The book was simple enough to not be boring, but in depth enough to tell everything I possibly wanted to know. I have read books that told me more than I needed, and I never finished them. I have also read through far too many that simply said nothing. This one was right in the middle and perfect for me. I bought several for friends who liked it as well.
Winward obviously has a big organic bent, because most solutions he gives are organic. I think more people than just myself will like this. You hard core chemical users will find some fair stuff, but probably not as much as your drooling to get. Anyway, I recommend it.

The easy step by step approach illustrated by the author was a miracle cure for my yard. I aerate correctly now, and boy it makes all the difference.

I was never privileged to have the time to learn what I needed to know in order to take care of my lawn, using the regular methods such as practical experience and personal experimentation. But I have always desired to have that knowledge anyway. Thank heavens Author Lane Winward found the time to learn eveything about lawns. Even more to the point, thank heavens he documented them.
I found the information in this book easy to retrieve and easy to apply. The pictures were lovely and the methods outlined have truly worked for me. The writing style was not over bearing and boring. Others book like this are more like encyclopedias and are not so easy to read and understand. I actually do have the greenest lawn in my neighborhood.

At this point in literary history, any biographer of W.B. Yeats is up against some stiff competition. Most of the late Richard Ellmann's work on the poet is, alas, out of print. But to judge from its first installment, R.F. Foster's double-decker life looks to be a monumental accomplishment, while in the recent Yeats' Ghosts, Brenda Maddox casts a cold (and discerning) eye over her subject's erotic life and supernatural predilections. Now comes The Life of W.B. Yeats by the Irish scholar Terence Brown. His book is very much a critical biography, attending more to the perfection of art than the perfection of life (while gracefully conceding that neither in fact exists). So there's relatively little frolicking around in the poet's boudoir à la Maddox. Still, Brown has a gift for conveying the texture of Yeats's life, selecting just the right details from what is now a copious historical record. Here he delivers a fine snapshot of the poet paying court to chain smoker Iseult Gonne after having been spurned by her notorious mommy:

In August 1917 Yeats had visited Maud and Iseult Gonne in Normandy where he renewed his suit for Iseult's hand. She was moody, sickly from over-indulgence in cigarettes, flirtatiously affectionate but no more inclined to marry Yeats than she had been the previous summer. Her mother he found surrounded by the usual menagerie which included a laughing parrot whose forte was peals of hysterical laughter.

Still, Brown is strongest on the poetry itself, which he methodically mines for fresh insights. And he's refreshingly open to scolding his subject when he falls short of his own gargantuan talents (even Responsibilities, which most Yeatsians consider a breakthrough into the poet's major, post-Celtic Twilight phase, gets some flack from Brown: "The several poems in which Yeats celebrates Irish beggary as a metaphor of the spiritual freedom the Irish materially minded moneyed class so signally lacks, are without purchase on much beyond the literary salon's version of mendicancy"). There are times, to be sure, when the author's prose bogs down a bit, and he's hardly aided by the publisher's eyeball-punishing type size. Yet Brown's Life of W.B. Just picked up my copy today - great book on how to make BIG $$$.......2005-10-17

While pervusing this book at my local favorite book retialer, I couldn't believe the claims made herein. As the saying goes, if it looks too good to be true, it usually is. Not with this book though.

Fortunately, a stock trader, an honest one at that also happened to be reading another copy of this book. As I engaged in a conversation with this man, he indicated that he had been using Wade Cook's method's since 1995 and further indicated that he had made some incredible returns. He went onto explain, that there are some unknown ways to make money in the market that most people, average investors like you and me don't know about.

This same man also had a copy of Monday's IBD and showed me which stocks he was going to use for the FREE STOCKS LOCC SYSTEM that Cook teaches in this book.

So while I cannot offer you any incredible stories at this time, since I have not used the techniques as of yet, I will be in the future. Nonetheless, I was very impressed witht he systems contained in this book. So much so that I decided to buy two other Wade Cook books. I'll let you know how I made out.

Impressed me!.......2005-10-16

My local BAMM just got a load of this book as well as other Wade Cook books. Being in management with an uncertain future, I am always looking for extra income opportunities. This program by Wade Cook made the most sense.

I like the idea of selling via Super Covered Calls and then creating income or buying more stocks for free. It's working well for me. As Wade beats to death, "always know your exit and do your homework."

My only word of caution is that there are some promotional pieces inside the book and a toll free number on the inside back cover. I called and was heavily pitched to sign up for a seminar and but other products. When I asked if this was Wade Cook's compnay, the person on the other line simply said, "Who the heck cares about Wade Cook." I can only assume if wasn't and that turned out to be true. I found Wade via his new website at wadecook.org. The customer service people there were much friendlier and even enrolled me in a FREE teleseminar. It was like a breathe of fresh air.

This book is complete junk, most of the 4-5 star rating are probably from Wade's cronnies and fraudster. I was even tricked into attending one of his B.S infomerical seminar. Luckily I detect his B.S and left. Stick with the classic from Bill O'neil, Gerald Loeb, and Darvas.

Powerful advice!.......2005-10-02

This advice can put into early retirement. Wade has been accused of running a get rich scheme and that is partly true. In America, anytime you can come up with a workable strategy that can help you become financially free in less than 4 years, thent hat is quick. Scheme? No, it is just taking advantage on what is available.

And now with stocks like GOOG moving up above the $300 range, it is now possible to get those H-U-G-E premiums that Wade talks about. (This book was written just prior to the Clinton Bear Market in 2000)

Give it a shot.

This guy was suited by a lot of personal investors.

Matter of fact you can find the law suits against him on the Federal Trade Commission web site: FTC.GOV In the search box type in 'Wade Cook'. There are about 31 hits.

According to the FTC complaint, WCFC's (Wade Cook Financial Corporation) advertising and promotional materials contain express or implied false claims that Wade Cook had earned and consumers would earn extremely high rates of return - returns of 20% or more per month - on their investments using Cook's trading strategies.

Another words, the man can't walk the talk.

Without a doubt, Andrea Needham's "Workplace Bullying: Business Costly Secret" is the best book I've read on the topic, and certainly the one book I'd most recommend to business leaders. She carefully uses stories she gleaned from a great many personal interviews. She documents the damages done to them and gives them sage advice with understanding, compassion and a significant measure of encouragement prodding them forward towards relief and recovery.

In order to make her case against employer tolerance of workplace abuse, Needham then intelligently couples her fieldwork with her considerable experience as a businesswoman and an international HR expert. Confessions of a Bitter Curmudgeon.......2002-05-31

This light-weight read didn't really deliver what it purported to be... clocking in at under 100 (small) pages there isn't really a lot here. The first couple chapters are of the "who cares/bibliography" variety, (i.e. I grew up in a log cabin and my dad blah, blah, blah), and then the whole second half of the book just documents various B-level Nashville personalities that the author met fleetingly, (i.e. and once Chet Atkins was outside the cafeteria I usually go to and I got to say "hi" to him in the parking lot).

The remainder, (about enough material for a long-ish magazine article), gives us "shocking" insights into the Nashville music scene such as:

- some big name stars consider their band musicians as "hired hands" (aren't they??) and don't treat them very well

- most music producers, etc are more concerned about money than music

- fellow musicians are competitive about getting work

Oh no Dave! Say it ain't so!!. One of the most sensational stories here involves a female C&W star who had the unmitigated audacity to invite her band over for a barbecue, but then wouldn't let anyone in to go traipsing through her newly decorated house. That's about as shocking as it gets! If you are looking for the dirt on Nashville this book hasn't got enough to stick under your fingernail.

Also, throughout the book the author comes off as churlish and inflexible... I'm sure the business is as nasty and competitive in Nashville as he makes it out to be... but does he ever pause to reflect that he might have gotten more work if he was more of a "teamplayer"?

An interesting read if you are a guitarist specifically interested in this topic... but general readers should consult "Nashville Babylon" for juicier fare that doesn't hesitate to name names.

This author has finally written the truth about the way the music business is. If anything, I think he was too kind. He refes to some by name but a lot of them remain a secret. I wish I knew who they were! I definately think this is worth your time to read. I was in the business in Nashville myself and believe me, every bit of this and more is true!
