Book Description
Hailed by the Washington Post as "a spontaneous act of generosity," The Road Less Traveled has already given more than two million grateful readers an inspirational framework for achieving profound personal growth and satisfaction. Now Dr. Peck, a practicing psychiatrist, reads from his extraordinary work in the first of a series of audio programs drawn from the book. Dr. Peck's crucial premise---that life is hard---is challenging for even the strongest among us, but his art lies in his ability to lead us to accept, and ultimately transcend, this idea. The key is discipline, and with Dr. Peck's assistance, you will learn to master the four principles of discipline needed for every healthy, life-affirming act: Delaying Gratification Accepting Responsibility Dedication to Reality Balancing The Road Less Traveled is a landmark. Never before have psychological and spiritual guidance come together so powerfully. It's not the easiest road---but it is the only one worth taking. Let Dr. Peck's remarkable achievement help you find your way as you journey today, and every day of your life.

A must read for self awareness and spiritual growth........2007-01-19
This book was originally published and a best seller when I was too young to be interested in a book like this. I happened upon the 25th Anniversary Edition while on vacation and could only skim through this before having to return it to the library on our cruise ship. I was excited to order my personal copy of the book and reread the book. Since then my husband and mother-in-law have read the book with my encouragement. This book is life changing and yet simple. It has helped me to understand myself and others much better, and has put into words beautifully my spiritual beliefs. I have never been to a psychiatrist or taken part in any form of therapy but after reading the book I have a much greater appreciation of the process that takes place in good therapy. I will use this book for the rest of my life.
Life Changing.......2006-06-20
You have to read this book. All of them are great but this is the "gateway" to enlightenment.
Starting on the Road Less Traveled.......2005-09-12
This is one of the most important books I think anyone can read. It was recommended to a friend of mine in therapy and I decided to read it as well.
The first sentence in the book is so profound. "Life is difficult." For all of us who struggle and find that life is sometimes tough, this is not a revelation, but when you accept that fact, then you can rise above that concept.
This book spoke to me on so many levels and I am certain that it is a book that I will read many many times. It is making a deep change in my life right now as I peruse it for the first time.
If you are tempted to buy this book, please do and read it with an open mind towards spiritual awakening.
A good book for the young..........2003-11-09
It has been many years since I read this book and reread it. There are definitely some truly wonderful tools, which I have kept with me ever since I read the first line of the book... Life is difficult. As soon as one reflects on this fact and accepts it, it really isn't so difficult any more...
Of course I now realize-after having gone through some very painful experiences since I first read those lines-that this is an over-simplification. Life can and does throw some serious curve balls that really knock the wind right out of you! Realizing and understanding that life is difficult, is not enough of a tool to get you through loosing someone to death... Because there are all kinds of disturbing and hellish emotions that go along with loosing someone that you love so very much.
For anyone who was raised with any kind of a religious background, this book does not provide enough reasons as to why we feel the way we do about life's circumstances and our own roles here on earth. The messages that many-if not most of us have been given as children-from our parents and mentors can be quite confusing and contradictory. These messages stay with us, and as twisted as some of them may be, influence many of our decisions and keep us spinning within that vicious sphere.
If you have bought this book or are thinking of reading it, I say, go ahead and read it. It probably will give you some insight and some good tips on coping with life. But if you are seriously searching and trying to change your life, I would strongly recommend The New Dance of Christ by Anthony T Massimini.
The New Dance of Christ is a wonderfully, insightful book which will really blow your mind! I do wish that the title were different though. I consider myself a Recovering Catholic and no longer even consider myself a Christian. If it weren't for a friend of mine recommending this book to me, I would not have picked it up because of the title.
But don't be swayed by the title! Because even if you don't agree with all of the theories of Massimini, you can't help but be intrigued, fascinated and even altered by his words and facts... Whether you are a Christian, Buddhist, or even an atheist, this book will unlock something inside of you that was there all along but blocked and un-nurtured.
The Uber-Self-Help Book.......2002-01-26
M. Scott Peck's brilliant description of the human condition is the uber-self-help book. If you want to know why the world today (and twenty some-odd years ago when the book was written) is awash with narcisists, liers, responsibility shirkers, loveless relationships, and instant gratification consumers, this is the book for you. And yes, you will find that you exhibit some symptoms of every problem he describes. But how do we combat our own weakness? He explains all. As Dr. Peck says (paraphrased), "Why do people lie? To avoid pain." Simply stated and direct, he writes with a style that exposes the elephant in the room. Every person owes it to themselves to read this book and look in the mirror. This book is not a substitute for therapy, or a spiritual guide. This book is an eye opener, to show you the way towards a healthy mind and spirit...hence the title. Highly recommended.

The Men in Sheepskin Coats.......2000-04-06
This is yet another fine Adventures in Canadian History bookwritten for children by Pierre Berton. All the books in this seriesare outstanding and captivating not only for young readers but adults alike. This series brings us into an in depth understanding of Canadian History. This volume is memorable for it's tale of the struggles of different people groups as they faced the challenges and joys of opening up the Canadian West, specifically Saskatchewan. The only drawback to this book is we wished it was longer. The stories are fascinating. The historical aspects of this book gave our family a clearer understanding of the people in modern day Saskatchewan. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING!
Book Description
Recent years have witnessed the rapid expansion of the personal financial-planning market, with tens of thousands of new planners entering the field. In addition, numerous advisers in the banking, accounting, and insurance fields are beginning to offer planning services. And according to a report from the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of personal financial advisers is "expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2012.... As the number and complexity of investments rises, more individuals will look to financial advisers to help manage their money." Updated throughout to reflect the latest industry trends and regulations, Getting Started as a Financial Planner is a hands-on guide to making the move to becoming a fee-based financial planner. Noted practitioner Jeffrey Rattiner covers everything a beginning financial planner will need to know, from setting up a practice and communicating with clients to managing investments and marketing services. In addition, he has added a new chapter covering the latest planning models.
Customer Reviews:
Marginal Value If You Don't Know Anything.......2007-03-30
Bottom line up front - you will not gain a top down view of the industry, the understanding of the types of businesses within it, or the nitty gritty of the components needed to do financial planning or run the business. From the other reviews, most that liked this book didn't have much perspective in this category.
I've bought a number of books to familiarize myself with the financial planning industry before setting off on an educational track. This book has been my only complete disappointment. I'm sure Mr. Rattiner knows his business, but this book does not serve any particular purpose. The scope is too broad and the depth of analysis to shallow to be helpful. No one will "Get Started" in one book. Many parts of the book are more like bulleted/paragraphed lists which can't possibly reveal the extent of the author's knowledge on any of the topics. Other parts skim through the technical parts of financial planning (e.g. types of life insurance policies) which have to be learned later in official certification courses. The aspects of running a small business he mentions don't reveal anything significant or truly specific to this type of business - you could get as much from a good article on the subject.
If you have not yet read anything on the industry, try In Search Of The Perfect Model which gives an excellent overview of very successful and inspiring corporate visions of real financial planning businesses from sole practitioners to regional firms. An alternate bottom-up book which does not sugar coat anything and will specifically point you toward further research in a variety of areas is So You Want To Be A Financial Planner. If you are looking for how the business should be structured for financial success under any model, Practice Makes Perfect written by industry consultants (no "this worked for me" bias) is phenomenal. For office operations, Virtual Office Tools for a High Margin Practice will get your mind spinning with what technology can do for you as a planner. For marketing, I recommend The Brand Called You which gets down to what weight of card stock you should have for mailings.
Sure it's better than nothing but...
Good Introduction for newbie, comprehensive scope.......2007-02-27
Jeff Rattiner is a well-known planner who operates a handful of planning companies and has served as President of the Financial Planning Association (FPA). He's a trustworthy source of information on how to become a financial planner and the important things to consider before embarking on this journey. I work in a related field and found his book helpful to illuminate me on all the issues you'll face. I would encourage you to view this book in terms of a basic introduction to the field and career of financial planning - don't expect advanced tactics or strategies. Established financial planners may find much of the material redundant. Overall, I recommend this book for people considering becoming a financial planner or those who work as an employee in financial services and are considering opening an independent practice.
This book is scam.......2006-02-05
This book is a scam. He's trying to get people to sign up for his training program.
The actual information in the book is minimally helpful.
He charges $40 for you to read marketing tool for his business.
I have no doubt he also wrote these other glowing reviews of this book.
An emerging Ethical, Caring and Holistic Profession.......2004-07-26
Initially, there is a typical cheap-sell impulse about this book (even labeled on the back of it) that breaking into the lucrative financial planning field has never been so easy! Such misleading comments will only damage a highly respectable profession.
Before reading this book, I was intimidated with a perception that financial planners were just another concoction of pesky stockbrokers reborn. When I began reading Chapter 2, I realized that becoming a Certified Financial Planner requires many years of acquired wisdom with scores of training to best understand the needs of their clients. Mastery is comparable to the same level of other respectable professions!
Rather than push product-centered transactions, services offered must be sophisticated, personal and accommodating to ensure long-term success. Now, subjective and objective targets must be met, along with technical prowess and imagination.
As a novice for this review, it seems that financial planning is still in the nascent stages. Therefore, anyone can be a Certified Financial Planner, an exhilarating but also frightening thought. I agree that this is the ultimate mid-career switch for the burned out CPA, attorney, stockbroker, or college-grad housewife.
This leading expert must publish a new edition to reflect the many changes occurring in a burgeoning, potentially volatile, financial service sector. The book was written right before the dot-com bubble bust, so financial planning does not seem to be taken seriously enough.
Jeffrey H. Rattiner portrays the profession in a warm-hearted position, similar to the motion picture Jerry Maguire, where the celebrity athlete is the only loyal client on a hard road to redemption and personal growth for both individuals and their families.
Outstanding book !!.......2004-07-10
I read many business books and when I find one worthwhile I type a summary a page or two long and file it categorically. Not only was this book worthy of a writeup for my personal files but I couldn't get my "summary" under 7 pages. I am a CPA and MBA who was considering starting a personal financial planning practice at some point in the future. That point in the future will probably be much sooner than anticipated after reading this book. It is very insightful and has been instrumental in the business plan I have been working on for a PFP practice.

Customer Reviews:
Pick another book to "Get Started with".......2006-06-25
The author Edward Stone did nothing for this book but interview a bunch of different financial consultants then write this book. Shouldn't an author of a book know what he is writing about? Find a book written by a financial consultant. The writing style was incredibly boring and I had a hard time finishing this book. This book did very little to educate me on getting ready to be a financial consultant.
Way outdated.......2006-04-05
I borrowed this book from my local library back in 2001 when I was getting into the financial planning business, and it gave me some basic information. It was easy to read, but I never felt I could trust what the book said, because it all sounded "too easy." But it was an eye-opener, hence the 3 stars.
But, this book is now six years old, so it's of very little value to someone wanting to get started. The only book on this topic that's been updated is Jeffrey Rattiner's "Getting Started" book, but that's more toward starting an FP business. Another expensive book by an author named Nancy something offers too little for the $55 price; besides you cannot trust that book's reviews on Amazon because all the positive ones seemed planted by the same person. So check out Rattiner's book (2005 edition) to see if it's right for you.
Excellent for Newbies.......2003-12-20
As a new person to the world of financial consulting, I was searching for a way to make sense of all the different certifications available, how to go about getting them, which would be the right certification for me, etc. This book gave me 100% of what I was looking for and more. In addition to certification information, the author discusses, in a highly readable manner, other nuts-and-bolts beginner's topics, such as legal/regulatory issues, marketing, and different services one could offer a client. I highly recommend this book to anyone starting out in the field, or to someone just wanting to explore whether financial planning might be for them.
Good stuff but bad writing style.......2003-10-09
Instead of filtering information and writing it appropriately, the author keeps quoting financial planners and their opinions about different topics. These opinions are often not well fundamented, repetitive, biased by self-experience or contradicting each other, in a way that it makes reading very difficult and boaring. It took me weeks to finish the book. It has useful (although basic) information for people thinking of starting in financial planning, but contend could be condensed in 20% of the pages.
Excellent Overview.......2003-04-26
Great overview of the industry and how to enter into the Financial Planning profession. Highly recommended this book for those who want an insight into the job functions and roles of a typical FP.

Book Description
Dogs Don't Cry Tears is a biographical story of a globe-trotting German Shepherd with the odd name Quinky. Born in North Africa, Quinky was one of the descendants of German Shepherds left behind by German officers, under the command of General Rommel, known as "The Desert Fox," after they had to flee the country. Along with his sister, Ginny, Quinky was adopted by the author and her husband as pups.
At first Quinky and Ginny lived in a doggie paradise. But then destiny struck, the author and her husband had to move to the United States and everything began to change. During the waiting period, while in care of hired caretakers, Ginny was killed by a scorpion, and Quinky was close to death in his despair.
In a dramatic rescue action by the author's European family, a director of Lufthansa and a newspaper reporter Quinky made a lonely, solitary 18-hour flight from Africa to Europe for a temporary stay with the author's mother and sister in Europe, who had no idea what they were getting into by taking this totally uneducated German Shepherd into their home. After a broken finger, court cases, training school and a diploma, Mr. Me-Me-Me became a civilized citizen of the United States upon his return to the author.
Nonetheless, this former, me-me-me egotistical monster had dramatically changed his aggressive behavior once he understood the tragic story of his new neighbor's dog, a sweet little dog was chained-up outside, day and night, almost freezing to death. This pivotal event in both Quinky's and the author's lives changed not only his behavior, but the author's view about dogs forever.
Eleonora De Lennart reaches into the soul, heart and mind of a dog. In a most enjoyable way, the book reads like a story about the destiny of an owner and her dog, yet it is enhanced by scientific facts. "Quinky is my destiny dog," says Eleonora De Lennart. "- he changed my life, even my career-he made me realize my mentor was correct when saying "dogs are scientists in our language."
Through numerous fascinating, heartwarming and sometimes humorous stories about Quinky's doggie-friendships you'll encounter Cleopatra and Girly, Mienchen and Cicci, Rex and Lissy. That are the lucky dogs in the world. But you will also read about dogs that are not so lucky. Dogs like Lucky and Bongy who did'nt even have a name, before being rescued from the hands of brutal owners.
Dogs Don't Cry Tears is the advocacy for people to understand the advanced mind of a dog. You will discover that dogs feel sorry and guilt, that they can laugh and cry-but, unfortunately, not in a human's perception of crying-because Dogs Don't Cry Tears.

Not what you think, but still interesting..........2005-09-13
The title of this book is misleading, although perhaps not intentionally so. A more accurate title would have been, "Dwarf and Unusual Conifers in the Gotelli Collection of the United States National Arboretum". (What this title lacks in elegance it makes up for in accuracy.)
"Dwarf & Unusual Conifers Coming of Age: A Guide to Mature Garden Conifers" appears to be a self-published (and self-designed) guide to the remarkable collection of conifers originally assembled by New Jersey businessman William Gotelli and transferred, legally and physically, to the USNA in 1962. Existing material on this collection is incomplete and scattered, so a guide to the collection and its individual specimens is a valuable addition to the literature, and a great help for visitors.
The book falls short in several regards. Its design and typography are not up to professional publishing standards. Distracting and inconsistent, they obscure the very real informational value of the descriptive, historical, and cultural sections. The photography is adequate, but does not do justice to the specimens, and lackluster reproduction values diminish its value further. There are numerous errors of spelling and nomenclature (Botanical nomenclature is admittedly complicated and prone to error, but this book has more than its share.) Finally, the target audience for this book is somewhat unclear. It is too detailed and intimate for the casual visitor, and insufficiently serious and authoritative for the true expert.
These defects aside, " Dwarf & Unusual Conifers Coming of Age" fills an interesting gap in the lore of collectable conifers. The history of the Gotelli collection, and especially the photos of Gotelli's original plantings, are fascinating. The panoramic views of the current beds are very useful to the contemporary visitor. Finally, the sections on culture and integrated pest management, largely authored by USNA staff, provide practical and tested advice for growers and collectors. For serious conifer enthusiasts, this book is probably a must-have, since much of the material presented is not available elsewhere. Others should be guided by the real focus of the book - if they plan to visit, or have visited, the Gotelli Collection in Washington, DC, this book will add significant value to the experience. I'm still waiting for a definitive guide to mature forms of dwarf and unusual conifers.
One of the few really excellent books on conifers.......1999-03-06
This book is a rare work of art. The extensive and excellent photography shows plants in garden settings; photos are numerous and clearly defined. The cultural descriptions, including things like explanations, size, form, zone and suggestions for companion plantings are also very well written-complete and easy to understand. If you are a serious landscaper or love unusual conifers, this reference book is a MUST!

Nikolai Cherkasov, People's Artist of the USSR, gives an account of his life as an actor, and aspects of the acting profession. This is an unusual autobiography in that it is of a Soviet actor whose career was entirely within the Soviet era. Cherkasov has been a major actor in both film and the stage, since the 1920's. His last role discussed in this book was when he played Mayakovsky in The New Mayakovsky.

Funny, powerful, driven.......2005-08-05
Rarely does a book like this keep me up at night! Let me start out by saying I am not usually a fan of this type of story. However, after the first few pages I could not put it down. The characters are realistic, the dialogue both heartfelt and gritty, and you cannot help but be caught up in the emotions of the characters.
This is a book of self discovery, of conflicting emotions, and a book of insight into the human soul. Warning: you may find yourself turning page after page at 2 in the morning even though it's a work day . . .
