4 out of 5 stars Good book, but needs updates.......2001-02-11

Fortunately, the daunting size of the book wasn't a factor. I used Backpacking... in 2000 mainly in Bolivia. I was disconcerted by the lack of updated information, but overall the maps and descriptions are very helpful. I spent three weeks in western Amboro National Park studying river otters and the impact of human presence in the area; I used Bradt's 1995 edition during a reconnaisance into the area two years ago, and found Jon Derksen's descriptions thorough and informative. Two tips--unbuckle your pack while fording rivers, and float your pack during deeper crossings were particularly insightful. What is more, the trip paved the way for the recent otter study. (Mr. Derksen, if you read this, I found the 'message in the bottle' you left in the crack in the 'cave'! Did you ever make it to the headwaters of the Macunucu?).

4 out of 5 stars Buy this guide with a grain of salt..........2000-04-23

Although I've read negative reviews about the 1999 edition, over the past ten years I have used "Trekking and Backpacking in Peru and Bolivia" as a reliable source of information both for myself and friends. Sure, some of the details are outdated, but there isn't a travel guide out there where that isn't the case. What I like about the Bradt publication is that it rounds out the hiking experience, offering alternatives and interesting insights. I have found especially valuable the 1995 ed. section on Bolivian National Parks--the information provided a gateway to some amazing adventures I had in the Apolobamba (a must see) and Amboro National Park. I know Bolivia quite well, and can say that this book is an important addition to the Andean travelers backpack.

2 out of 5 stars Erroneus and very outdated description of some hikes.......1999-10-19

I have been using this book when trekking in P&B in 1996. I have found many treks (in Colca Canyon, Cordillera Real for example) to be erroneus and very outdated (15 years at least regarding Colca). I've checked later editions (but not this one) and they didn't change a thing What's good about this book is that it at least tells you were you can possibly trek, but be very carefull later and don't trust the book to much or you'll be in trouble

3 out of 5 stars I found this guide useful, but ..........1998-09-07

I used this book in Peru & Bolivia in August 1998, and it was useful, but there are better guides around, at least for Peru. I give it only three stars because it is unnecessarily large and inconvenient as a use-on-the-trail guide; the maps aren't very comprehensive; and the incidental information on flora, fauna, etc, is superficial.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough and informative book for the South American trekker.......1998-06-28

I found 'Backpacking and Trekking...' a worthwhile read. I've spent six years running tours into the Andes and this latest edition offered me some good tips on some great hikes. Like any guide of its kind some of the information is no longer accurate, but the Bolivia section was particularly useful, since it is the area I know least.

            "

Bill Rancic, winner of the hit TV show The Apprentice, tells how anyone can become their own personal success in both business and life, using his own experiences as a self-made entrepreneur.

Getting back to basics, Rancic shares insights about his own path to The Apprentice -- his work ethic, top business strategies, and lessons learned competing on the show, working for Donald Trump -- and offers a practical, step-by-step guide to climbing the success ladder from first job to Boardroom. From valuable lessons learned as a budding ten year old entrepreneur pitching pancake sales; to starting his own small business to pay for college; to launching an on-line cigar company now worth millions -- Rancic proves you don't need to be a Harvard MBA to be a success in business.

Includes a foreword by Donald Trump! "

4 out of 5 stars For small business owners.......2007-05-03

I picked this book up at a used book store simply because I'm a fan of the show; but, I figured I might gleen a few words of wisdom from Mr. Rancic's experience with Mr. Trump. I had forgotten that Bill was also a business owner prior to his appearance on the show.

I was pleasantly surprized at the insights contained in this jem of a book. The insights strike me more as wisdom I will one day recall and put into practice rather than strategies I will implement immediately.

I can see now that I will read this book a second time, and more than likely, a third. I recommend it to any small business owner.

4 out of 5 stars For Apprentice fans.......2007-01-30

I was hooked on the Apprentice from the first time I saw a preview. Sadly, due to the delay in broadcasting, while doing some research on my favourite candidate from Season 1 - Bill Rancic I found out about half way through watching season 1 that he had won. I enjoyed Bill's book but found it more of a great story that inspired me, rather than a book that gave me new direction and pointed me towards new discoveries. Reading about Bill's company Cigars Around the World and Bill's Cigar of the Month Club was however fabulous! I'm interested to read his second book which shows kids how they can get out there and start their own businesses.

            4 out of 5 stars Fired Up!.......2006-10-12

Bill Rancic, the dashing winner of the first season of Donald Trump's runaway-hit reality show The Apprentice admits on the back sleeve of his book You're Hired: How to Succeed in Business and Life that he never went to business school and that he doesn't believe that business theory can be learned from a book. What then is the affable Mr. Rancic doing offering advice on good and ethical business practices? Making the most of his fifteen minutes of fame, that's what. In two hundred pages, he lays out the formula for his own success that led to him beat out 215,000 applicants to become the Donald's first `Apprentice.' The reader is privy to Mr. Rancic's early entrepreneurial efforts, businesses that whet his appetite for something larger. Readers are also witness to his failures and mishaps that threatened to derail his ambition. Through it all, Rancic recounts the lessons he's learned, persons he's admired, falls from which he's risen. He offers opinions on Kwame Jackson, his fellow runner-up to the Apprentice title, and `deceitful' Omarosa, whom many believed was the cause of Jackson's loss. He also details lessons he's learned on goals, values, strategies, leadership, vision, and success. While business school grads may scoff at Rancic's straight-shooting and simplistic advice, it is less idealistic than The One Minute Manager series of books. Here, Rancic seems to be offering advice to the everyman and everywoman looking to get a better hold on the direction and management of their lives in pursuit of their goals and dreams. The result is one that is as memorable, yet as pleasing, as a tall glass of lemonade.

4 out of 5 stars Time honored advice still holds.......2006-05-26

This is not the type of book I usually read, but the persona that came through was so engaging that after flipping through a few pages, I decided to buy the book.

Rancic personifies the American ideal; wholesome, grounded in a loving family that emphasizes hard work and integrity (and genetically blessed in the looks department!). This fortuitous mix of "apple pie" ingrediants have garnered him national fame, and this book outlines his experiences (along with the lessons he learnt along the way) that propelled him to be The Apprentice.

The accounts of his experiences are modern day fables, with the moral of the story encapsulated as life lessons at the end of each chapter. In addition, each chapter contains vignettes of wisdom boxed in grey shading. Many of these are commonsense admonitions we've been hearing all our lives to the point that they have become cliches. Rancic shows that these tried and true maxims of the American dream still apply.

I gave the book four stars for two reasons. One, the editing is sloppy. Writing a book in a conversational tone does not override the need for proper grammar. Two, Rancic's references to himself sometimes tend to sound smarmy (as when he refers to himself as "master chef" in the pancake story from his childhood and later when he calls himself an eligible bachelor).Somehow, this takes away from his self-characterization as humble. Such relatively minor flaws aside, this is a book worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Business Advices.......2005-10-31

While lots of books give you high level theories on how to succeed in your business, they usually leave you hanging at the end of the reading not know what actions to take in order to apply the theories in your day-to-day operation. Rancic's book however has a step-by-step recount of how he did it with his cigar business. You will get specific actions that you can do tomorrow to generate sales. While other books give you general directions (and lots of bullsh&ts), Rancic tells you specifically what he had done to succeed his business, what radio station he called, how much he paids for, what's the account was, how much he charged.

If you are an entrepreneur starting out or already struggling with your small/medium size business, this book is your road map.

              Book Description

Success means something different for everyone. For Bill Rancic, it meant taking the things he loved -- like coming up with exciting ideas and never working a 9-to-5 job -- and translating that into a profitable business. By the time he was thirty, he'd achieved every goal he set for himself by creating an online cigar company from scratch and then using those profits to begin a venture in real estate.

Then an opportunity came by he just couldn't pass up -- a competition to test his own personal drive and street smarts against a talented pool of professional salesmen, marketers, and MBAs, where the prize was working side by side with the master of the deal himself, Donald Trump.

Being on The Apprentice made Bill Rancic an overnight celebrity. But his winning strategies were developed long before that, and in You're Hired, he uses examples from his own life to prove that the secrets of success can be found within us all.

I picked this book up and couldn't put it down. It reads just like our lives are with dogs . . . flowing an interesting course, and interweaving our daily reality (which we probably spend much of stuck in the mechanical, corporate world) with joy, compassion and love. This book honors all dogs and all dog lovers everywhere with the stories and reality of who dogs are, what they've come to mean in our lives, and how they've changed us to be better people. I highly recommend this book for all dog lovers.

Creative, heart-warming yet never wandering from reality, "Living with Dogs" takes us on the magical and wonderous experience it is to own, and eventually fall in love with, a dog. Written by a dog-lover and owner of a 14 year old Chow named Chang, "Living..." is an excellent book of anecdotes and stories you'll love to share.

Our lives are filled with a wide array of relationships---some of which are very complicated and some of which are really very simple. The simple connections we make with nature and animals sustain us. If you have found that your dog is a simple and sustaining part of your life you will enjoy these simple, anecdotal stories of other dog-people's experiences. The book has the same uplifting characteristics as our relationships with our dogs.

I scrubbed out my poorly written comments for BookAlley but was unable to return to correct my mistake. Anyway I received the book in record time and not only is it in excellent condition but it has a lovelier cover than advertised on this page! Hearty thanks to the folks at BookAlley for their promptness, FIVE STARS for their service. Look forward to studying the book.

Once again, Lillian Too manages to compile feng shui information in a way that is thorough, interesting, and easy to understand. As the publisher of a weekly feng shui ezine, redlotusletter.com, I read A LOT of feng shui books. This book has it all and explains everything in a way that anyone can understand. Unfortunately when it comes to feng shui, many people overlook their garden. Gardens are a very important element in the complete feng shui of your home or office, as they are the "arms" that surround your location. Anyone seriously interested in feng shui, should not overlook this important area. What's wonderful is that Feng Shui for Gardens explains in very easy terms all the considerations such as shape of the lot, elements such as wet or dry areas, and how to activate areas of your garden to improve your life or business. Best of all, the book has many, many beautiful images to accompany the text, which I personally find to be very helpful because they demonstrate ideas visually. Like the spaghetti sauce commercial says, "it's all in here." From rock gardens, to water gardens, greenhouses, to fishponds, you'll find it covered in this book. The book also has an index (I love these!), a glossary, and sources for further information. In short, this is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to incorporate feng shui in their garden. It's on my bookshelf.

What a lovely, positive and uplifting piece of work. As a newcomer to the world of Feng Shui but an experienced gardener, I was so delighted that Lillian was so encouraging and informative. Give it a go, you too will be the recipient of all the benefits of this glorious way of life in your lush gardens.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful collection of ideas.......2004-01-30

I found this book a wonderful collection of ideas, rather than a 'narrative'. Almost every 2 page layout can stand on its own as a graphic/textual design. I particularly enjoyed the discussion of the creative and destructive cycles. This wasn't anything new, but it made sense for the first time.

The book strongly emphasizes the coordination of garden layout with a southern facing home entrance. There really are no alternatives offered. I found this a bit rigid at first, but the northern exposure of any garden wall will always have limited sunlight, so I concluded it might not be entirely unreasonable.

Ms Too minces few words when something strikes her as a bad idea. I think at one point, she concludes a misplaced water feature could lead to madness in the family. This is likely to offend some, but one won't be bored!

The book seems a good reference. Since every 2 page layout is so rich with metaphors and relations between text and graphics, it will be rewarding for study over and over, again.

                  5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down.......2001-12-12

This book flows around its subject matter in much the way that the water dragon formula in Chapter Six identifies "auspicious" water flows with respect to the main doors facing different compass directions. It is well written and concise while still covering a lot of ground. I was fascinated with the collage illustrations. And I wouldn't be at all surprised if it turns out to be auspicious to read a book that has the word "auspicious" on every page.

1 out of 5 stars Completely impractical for most gardeners........2001-08-12

If you just bought yourself a big empty lot and will be designing and building your house and garden, this is the perfect book for you. For the rest of us with small, non-rectangular lots and existing houses, this book is useless.

I've never understood why so many people have a hard time understanding feng shui, but reading this book illuminated me. My interest in feng shui comes from Karen Rauch Carter and Terah Kathryn Collins, both of whom take ancient philosophies and practically and usefully apply them to Western culture. Lillian Too's feng shui seems to me to be so rigid as to be impossible for the majority of us to implement.

For example, this book advises that water elements (ponds, fountains) should go on the north side of your property. Well, that's not where I want (or have room) for my fountain. I want a fountain--where else can I put it? This book doesn't say, leaving me with the impression I'm courting feng shui disaster to place a fountain anywhere else in my yard.

This book also advises that palm trees, because of their height and the shape of their leaves, are dangerous to have anywhere around your home. As a Southern Californian, I find this very hard to believe. I also don't care for the assertion that cacti and other desert plants are dry and "dead" and therefore bad to have in my garden. Am I supposed to purchase only those plants that grow in China, regardless of my own climate and soil conditions?

I had hoped to obtain some sound advice to help me design my garden, but this book is filled with inflexible dictates rather than helpful guidelines. There aren't many feng shui gardening books out there, but I'll wait for a good one to be published. I got my money back for this one.

2 out of 5 stars Feng Shui for Gardens.......2001-04-07

The basic ideas in this book are good and the illustrations are great. However several subjects were lacking complete explaination and left me thinking I had missed something. The biggest disappointment for me though was the over-use of the work auspicious. By the end of the second chapter I caught myself counting how many times that word appeared on one page. I realize the word auspicious is a very powerful word, but in a 217 page book that word appears at least once on every page or at least it sure seemed so? I don't think I will be able to get past this and probably will return the book for another selection by a different author.

                            Part One Of Two Parts

Benedict Arnold should have died in battle. For the first half of the American Revolution, he fought brilliant and successful campaigns. He built an American fleet on Lake Champlain, repulsed the British at Valcour Island, won the battle of Saratoga and nearly succeeded in making Canada the 14th state. So why did he turn coat?

Motives are difficult, but there was something almost too ambitious about Arnold. Was he unstable? Overly ardent? Grandiose? Whatever the vice, it visited him fatally late in the war. In 1880 he sold himself and his secrets to the Brits. He got 6000 pounds, the contempt of his allies and a name that means "traitor" to this day.

"A tale of high tragedy." (The Quarterly Journal of Military History)

Although a little disturbed by reviewer York's comments that Arnolds hazardous march to Quebec is not altogether accurate particularly in regards to sabotage and desertion, the book provides a grand over view of Arnold's life that I was not altogether familiar with. The book starts with Arnold's early life where his father virtually becomes financially destroyed which seems to make him forever conscious of a need for him to be prosperous and financial solvent in the author's view. The best part of the book is the detail on Arnold's military accomplishments, which include his command of the Great lakes during the early part of the war in which he funded the building of small boats with his own money. One or part of the boats is in the Natural Museum of History on display in Washington D.C. where you can see the modest boat with a good size hole near the bow from a British war ship. Covers Arnold's failed but brave attempt to attack Canada and his great victorious battle at Saratoga where he suffers a crippling injury. In convalescence he is the military governor of Philadelphia where he meets his beautiful young wife whose family is suspect of being Tories. In the meantime, Arnold becomes frustrated with the failure of the Continental Congress to reimburse him for his costs in building the Great Lakes fleet. The author suggests this failure to appreciate Arnold and the lack of refund along with his love for his Tory wife may have prepared Arnold for the great act of treason at West Point. It is surprising that Arnold after he fled from West Point to the British he commanded a British army that captured Petersburg and burned his way south to Portsmouth. Arnold risked a hanging if he was caught by the Americans thus he leaves no doubt that he was brave on which ever side he served. Arnold allegedly counseled Cornwallis against moving to the Peninsula and Yorktown. The author reviews Arnold's post war quarrels with the British over money and commissions for his sons along with his failed land investments in Canada. Surprising that Arnold had business in Canada so close to the country he betrayed. A complex man that is fascinating to read about.

This book offers insight into the complex, controversial and ever-changing political landscape of the American Revolution. Benedict Arnold personifies the kaleidoscopic nature of loyalties, betrayals and intrigue prevalent during the War, circumstances much of which determined his course in life. In those days, most citizens were not revolutionaries but either loyalists or non-participants. Arnold's ambitions and abilities were manipulated by his constant striving for recognition and wealth. His inconsistency in allegiance reflected the inconsistencies of society and geography. Unlike Washington whose stability was based on his status as a general, statesman, politician and aristocrat, Arnold was a maverick sometime general and contraband entrepreneur seeking permanent social status, which was denied him throughout his life. Consequently, he jumped sides, outmaneuvering himself and suffering the consequences of traitor to both the new republic and England.

Mr. Randall does history a great diservice in his flawed and shallow interpretation of the march to Quebec in 1775. He resorts to rumor-mongoring in the handling of the local Maine heros involved with the mission. Particularly concerning Major Reuben Colburn who organized the expedition and built the 220 bateaux in under two weeks time. I am the grandson of Colburn and writing a biography of his life. Randall openly accuses him of fraudulent, selfish behavior in providing these services for his country. Even alleging Colburn knowingly passed up stores of dried lumber in Falmouth on his way home to Pittston to save money by substituting his own green pine which was heavy and later opened up during the river journey under the abuse of inexperienced boatmen and the grinding of a shallow stream. These charges are false, but then Randall couldn't even get the mapmaker Samuel Goodwin's name correct, calling him "Goodrich," perhaps confusing him with Capt. Goodrich one of the company commanders on the march; except to suggest that his maps, requested from him by Colburn were purposely misleading, because of Goodwin's Tory leanings. The leanings were true, but the maps were as accurate as could be found at the time. Besides, Arnold used the outdated version of Montressor's anyway, but it allows the author to lay further blame on Colburn, which appears to be his thesis. Colburn was never paid for the bateaux and supplies; he only received 26 pounds from Washington, and traveled with the expedition repairing the bateaux as they went, without fear of repercussions from the ragtag army struggling against the stream. Some bateaux made it all the way to Quebec but you won't learn that from this book. I recommend James Kirby Martin for a reasoned handling of this chapter in Arnold's life.

Randall's work is strikingly well researched and thoroughly engaging. His book traces Arnold's early years and his efforts in the American cause and gives an incredibly fair and detailed treatment to the events leading up to Arnold's betrayal of his country. In the face of Arnold's legendary infamy, for which for centuries his name was scorned, Randall allows Arnold a fair hearing and the reader the chance to see a broader picture. The Arnold portrayed by Randall is an Arnold, to an extent, abused by his congressional masters and denied the honours rightly due to him in the cause for which fought.

Randall reveals the Arnold, who not only fought bravely for his country, but at considerable personal sacrifice. Indeed the Arnold of Randall's scholarly work is one equal in valour to Washington himself but one who, perhaps even wisely, was far from willing to bear the unjust suffering inflicted, not only by his enemy the British, but from his countrymen as well.

No doubt the patriotic words of Wilfrid Owen, 'dulce et decorum est pro patria mori' are all well and good. But they're difficult to maintain in the face of obstinate compatriots.

I read this book a few years ago, and found it fascinating and informative. Recently, I've read another book by this author, "Thomas Chittenden's Town, the Story of Williston." Having grown up in Williston, I found that book full of glaring historical errors. That makes me suspect the author's true commitment to research. Now I can't help but wonder, "Were all the interesting facts about Benedict Arnold true, or did Randall take a lackadaisical approach to his research on that book as well?"

A lengthy but always compelling biography of the man whose name has become synonymous with traitorous behavior. Born in Connecticut, Arnold from an early age displayed a fiery spirit: at 15 he ran away from home to fight in the French and Indian War, though he eventually returned home to become the proprietor of a bookshop. At the beginning of the Revolutionary War he formed a local militia unit and fought with Ethan Allen at Ticonderoga. Later he helped plan and carry out the famous invasion of Canada via the Kennebec River and created the first United States navy on Lake Champlain. Wounded at Quebec and again at Saratoga, Arnold was appointed commander at Philadelphia. Here is where his behavior turned toward the British (Loyalist) cause. Accused of questionable business practices, he was court-marshaled and reprimanded by Washington. Angered by his perceived mistreatment, and prodded by his Loyalist wife Peggy Shippen, Arnold made overtures to the British of his willingness to switch sides. After much plotting, much of it involving what he would receive monetarily from the Crown for his activities, Arnold agreed to hand over an important post to the British. This post ended up being West Point, the scheme of which was foiled when accomplice John Andre was captured and hanged as a spy. Arnold left the country after the war and died in London in 1801.

Randall relates a great deal of information about Arnold and the times in which he lived. He is a good enough writer, however, to keep the narrative interesting and provocative. Randall is fair and balanced in his treatment of Arnold's traitorous activities, seeming to place most of the blame on Arnold's wounded pride. Like many ambitious men, Arnold fostered many enemies, some who seemed to go out of their way to injure him, though his own self-centeredness also led him astray. He later claimed it was when the French agreed to lend support to the patriot cause that he felt pushed over the edge to betray his country (he hated the French and her government). Ironically, though he obviously became anathema to Americans, the British never really liked him either. The only weakness in the book, for one this long, is its perfunctory index. Other than that, it's an excellent biography.

This is perhaps the best single volume biography available on Benedict Arnold - America's greatest commander during the Revolutionary War and the Nation's greatest traitor!

Willard Sterne Randall has written a tremendously well researched, compelling and balanced book that details Benedict Arnold's accomplishments and failures during America's fight for Independence. Arnold was almost single-handedly responsible for the American invasion of Canada, which, due to his prowess as a Strategist, Commander and Soldier, came very close to succeeding. When he wasn't winning battles on land, America's preeminent battlefield general was winning them on the water, building a navy and then delaying the British advance into New York for a year, thus assuring the survival of the Continental Army and the Nation.

Arnold was present at almost every major battle of the war, often snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Both the British and their Loyalist allies soon grew to hate him.

But his immense pride and hunger for wealth and recognition led to his downfall. Certainly the Continental Congress played a role, refusing to pay him four years of back pay due to him or reimburse him for the immense fortune he spent, out of his own pocket, training, equipping, and feeding his army and navy. Randall estimates that in all, Congress denied Arnold the equivalent of $275,000 due to him.

Furthermore, their repeated slights of the General and attacks on his character took their took. Arnold had only to marry a young and beautiful 19 year old Loyalist for his treason to be assured.

And so the man who almost single-handedly won the Revolutionary War (ensuring first the French, and then the Spanish and Dutch entered the fighting as allies of America), almost single-handedly lost it as he negotiated to turn over West Point and its forts to the British for 10,000 pounds. Only bad luck (on his part) prevented Arnold from succeeding. Once rescued by his benefactors, he fought as a British Brigadier against the Americans as effectively as he had fought for them.

This is a tremendous interesting story and an equally interesting book. True, Randall has a tendency to repeat himself, but readers will find "Benedict Arnold Patriot and Traitor" a good read!

                                          Book Description

Watching accounts of the Iraqi insurgency, Ed Howlette, Sr., vividly recalls methods taught by RAM to form and maintain terror cells. Stock piling guns and ammunition, using trained snipers, knocking out communication lines, disabling police, using gasoline to destroy public transportation systems, and providing instructions on how to prepare and launch molotov cocktails were just some of the terror tactics to be used in bringing about revolution. From 1965 to 1967, he was undercover in an organization espousing revolution with plans to assassinate Robert Kennedy and prominent civil rights leaders. For his bravery in the terror cell he was decorated by the NYPD, labeled an “enemy of the people” by some, and a “patriot” by others. We journey with him as he recalls early childhood in a state that denied his heritage, as he balanced family life with undercover work in the Revolutionary Action Movement, as he operated his law firm, and as he became active in politics and the community. From humble beginnings, he rose to a position of prestige and admiration and fell to one of seeking employment to support his family. Time after time, Ed's story illustrates that to overcome adversity one must be focused on goals, strive for success, and never quit.
