4 out of 5 stars Audubon for young kids.......2000-09-06

Like the other "first guides" this book on trees is both a study guide and a field guide. The study guide explains the differences between broadleaf and needle trees, seeds and cones of trees, how a forest comes to be, why forest fires can be helpful (some cones are triggered to release seeds only in intense heat) and more. The guide is full color beautiful photos of the most likely to be found trees on the left page, and similar trees with smaller pictures on the right. The right size and content for young kids, not too much info to make it confusing, but enough to get a fire of curiosity going.

              Book Description

The tramp logger of the 20th century could be a reincarnation of the cowboy of the 19th century. The work is different, but the philosophy is the same. As long as there is grub on the table, tobacco in the can, and a drink in the cupboard, life is good. I worked with many of them and came to admire them for their free-spirited approach to life. Some of them were running from ex-wives, a few were running from the law, but most of them were running simply because the earth turned too slow for them. Instead of the 40-year job and the gold watch, they opted for independence, and a more independent bunch of misfits you'll never find.

An Abrams favorite, now available in a new, fun format!

When Yann Arthus-Bertrand's astonishing book of photographs of domestic livestock and their breeders first appeared in 1999, The New York Times Book Review hailed this remarkable treasure as "a curiously appealing blend of art with kitsch...drama tinged with comedy." Now this wonderfully whimsical book is being rereleased in a fun new format.

                5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-08-14

I gave this book to my Dad for Father's Day, years ago. Whenever I go to his house, it's there and I have to look through it again. Get a hardcover copy if you can ... it will wear out otherwise. :-)

5 out of 5 stars I never tire of looking at this book.......2006-04-15

I'm not from a rural background, nor do I have any experience of animal husbandry, nor do I even have much interest in photography, but when I first saw this book in a store it simply drew me in.
Inside you will find page after page of superbly composed, full-colour photographs of various livestock breeds pictured with owners, owners' children or handlers from all over Europe, even some from as far away as Argentina. On some pages you will see soft-haired, placid sheep, on others tall and elegant horses, plump pigs whose faces almost seem to show amusement, graceful, homely-looking cows, on some occasions even goats or donkeys. Yet my personal favourites are the pictures of prize bulls. These handsome creatures seem to exude power, yet starkly defy their fearsome reputation as they stand patiently with their handlers, some of whom are just tiny children.
Yann Arthus-Bertrand's photographic juxtapositions of animal and master are often endearing, sometimes humourous, but crucially they are never, however often you happen to glance at them, dull. This book is not just a portfolio. Look through it and it will warm your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous photographs of magnificent animals!.......1999-12-15

Arthus-Bertrand displays the most amazing photographs of breeding quality livestock that I have ever seen. Anyone who appreciates animal husbandry, agronomy, or farm animals in general will love this book. The photographs of bulls are exceptional!

5 out of 5 stars A compelling book of portraits -- animals and their keepers........1999-09-25

This is the only photography book I've ever purchased, simply because I couldn't put it down in the bookstore. Since buying the book, I've passed it around to several friends -- some who are familiar with livestock -- and some who are not. Makes no difference. It's impossible to look at this book without going through the whole thing, page by beautiful page. The animals look strangely like their owners (or is it the other way around?). Each portrait is stark and simple, drawing your eye to the relationship between animal and handler. Buy this book. You won't regret it. Outstanding gift!

                  Book Description

Although the family farm is fading from the American landscape, the farm and its inhabitants hold a special place in our hearts. We are a nation descended from farmers, still tied to that heritage by strong emotional bonds. In Portraits, art photographer Danielle Weil presents 50 exquisite black-and-white portraits of farm animals. Her carefully composed photographs enable us to look at these animals--cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, goats, horses, and donkeys--with the patience they seldom allow us in real life and make it possible for us to discover their individuality, their uniqueness, all over again.

With a lyrical introduction by Verlyn Klinkenborg, Portraits is the perfect gift book for animal lovers and for all of us who feel a nostalgic connection to the farm.

Photographs of Farm Animals by Danielle Weil. A celebration of the American family farm in fifty exquisite black-and-white portraits. Introduction by Verlyn Klinkenborg.

At five o'clock every morning and five o'clock every evening the fifty-five cows on the Steidinger farm are milked. Milking is one of the dozens of chores, day in and day out, that are part of life for a farm family. But it's not all work; there is the satisfaction of self-sufficiency and a life lived independently for Dennis and Jane Steidinger and their eight children. Telling the SteidingersÔ story in both words and spirited photographs, Raymond Bial portrays a way of life and the individual lives of the members of this farm family.

5 out of 5 stars Farm Animal Portraits: A farmers critical appraisal.......2000-03-05

As the Title implies, this book covers portraits rather than photographs, but in may respects, it captures far more information than that which a photo would reveal. The detailed text accompanying each plate, comprehensively details the animal, it's individual background, and a wealth of information about the artist and why the animal was portrayed in this way.

As a farmer of rare farm animals, and a collector of books on such, I found this to be both a valuable and informative history on a wide range of farm animals, and also a magnificent collection of drawings, etchings, paintings and sketches.

The text explains why the animals were depicted as they were by the early artists, and details how to interpret them so that the most useful information about the subjects can be revealed.

I initially bought this book with the intention of cutting out the prints etc to frame , but immediately found the quality to be such as to warrant a permanent place on my bookshelves. After 30 years of farming, this book taught me so much.

I recommend this book to those interested in Art history, in the history of Farm animals, to farm animals breeders and fanciers, and to anyone who wants a better knowledge of the origins of our modern farm animals.

This book is riddled with mistakes. To name a few, 1. it says that cows are related to horses and swine (if you are going that far back in evolution then you might as well say that they are related to us), 2. several photos have misnamed the breed of cow in the picture, 3. says that Guernseys come from France (they originated on the channel island of Guernsey), 4. a photo shows some Muskoxen as being a type of wild cow (they are more closely related to goats), 5. the book states that cows have no incisors (they do have LOWER incisors). I could go on.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting Read but From Another World... .......2005-06-02

This is a well written book with lots of interesting information about growing poppies and home lab drug manufacture in general. What I found amusing is how the author so glibly advocated "stealing" all your supplies. In fact, there was an area of discussion about making poppyseed tea where the author instructs the reader to consider stealing the poppyseeds from the grocery store since otherwise it will cost $35-50!! I got a few laughs, learned quite a bit, and got my money's worth on this out of print book for which I paid $150.00. I certainly don't intend to manufacture heroin, but it was an informative and well written book. It sure took alot of courage to go to press with a book like this.

                          5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2002-09-29

I loved this book so much I put together a huge system and processed my own heroin. I destroyed my whole system though because one night I tripped on the poppies so hard that I thought the elaborate system i made was a spaceship from the planet Zoltar.

3 out of 5 stars SOME GEMS AMONG THE MUD.......2000-03-23

I was very happy to recieve my book. Honestly, I haven't done a good, thorough read, front to back. However, I think I can tell you that this book has much hydroponic, light, fertilizer, etc. info. Not what I wanted; however, there is, buried among the side info, good info.Harvesting/processing good.Better than nothing!

5 out of 5 stars Hydroponic Heroin delivers the good stuff!.......1999-05-27

Learn how to easily make your own heroin, morphine, laudanum, and other opium narcotics with this thin-yet-packed illegal recipe book. I made a batch of opium seed tea the first night I read the book! I wigged hard! Thanx Robert Neil Bunch!

4 out of 5 stars Bunch rips the cover off yet more anti-drug propaganda!.......1999-04-06

I never thought I could browse a bookstore and find and buy a book that deals with drug use in such frank, honest terms. Robert Bunch slowly reveals the untruth spread to the general public concerning the danger of recreational heroin usage.

He also covers the history of opium and how it became renowned as a widely-accepted curative. Not many people know that Bayer (yes, like the children's aspirin manufacturer) had a big hand in bringing the poppy's magic to the new land.

I'm not sure if Bunch has ever imbibed, but he sure does leave one wondering what it would be like to join the horde of famous artists who were known for their love of opium and its byproducts. A week after I read it, I germinated my first poppies!
