Book Description
Book Description
A unique guide to the history and still-visible reminders of London's heroic resistance, London's War is the first guidebook to explore the sights and attractions related to World War II and London's Home Front. Organized as 20 walking tours of central London and one driving tour of greater London, this guide describes, and often pictures, famous landmarks as they were during the Blitz — Westminster Abbey piled with sandbags, Parliament Square strung with barbed wire, the wax figures at Madame Tussaud's melted in the streets, the Tower of London's moat planted in onions and carrots. In addition to detailed maps that guide the traveler along each tour, London's War is filled with biographical bits, topical information, and cultural references that relate the wartime experiences of famous and regular people alike. It quotes the war-related writing and speeches of great authors including Virginia Woolf, George Orwell, and many others. Written with an appreciation for the triumph of the human spirit that defines London's courageous efforts during the war, the book leads travelers on an uplifting and inspiring journey.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for your trip to London.......2006-09-30
I took this book w/ me to London last summer and spent time on some of the walks the author suggests. I wish I had had time to do them all as I found her guidebook to be an excellent source, highly enjoyable, lots of side notes and comments, with good maps.
When I returned I recommended it to a professor who was going over to teach for the fall semester. He reported that he and his wife thoroughly enjoyed it as well. So, if you're a history buff, WW II or not, you'll enjoy this guide.
not your typical travel guide.......2004-01-31
Well first off, it's TWENTY walks not eight! Either way, I can't rave enough about this book. I bought it as a Mother's Day gift, and was leafing through it waiting for the mircrowave to bing, and have now read it cover to cover TWICE: first for the little boxed tidbitty things on each page, all the human interest details, and then for the rest of it, which turned out to be ALL human interest stuff. It's written about things you'd really want to KNOW, like how people felt and how they survived and how things are pronounced, and where the bathrooms are. It made me think how much dignity Londoners had, and how brave they were. I wasn't even planning to go to London and I still found the book fascinating. I guess that'd be my only complaint, actually. Now I want to go but I can't afford to! I'm writing this review because I just signed on to amazon to buy a copy for myself (not as a gift this time!), and thought I'd spread the word. Enjoy!!

Product Description
Extremism, now more widely termed, terrorism, is on the lips of every human being and on the front pages of the world s newspapers every day. But we still long for love and love still thrives. This poetic novel by Moncy Pothen plunges us directly into the forests and paddy fields of Kerala, India from the 1960s to the 1980s, describes the delicate and heartfelt awakening of love in two lives, and has roots in ancient Indian tradition. Can you forgive a terrorist, if he has participated in the murder of your own father? Like the heroine, Ahalya, we live in complicated times, where black and white give way to shades of gray, and in Beneath the Clouds and Coconut Leaves, we hold our breath to witness which will win the battle, love or hate? Like the hero, Arjunan, we are fighting to win that battle within ourselves.
Customer Reviews:
The unexpected ending of this novel makes it unique........2006-05-06
The natural beauty of an Indian village has been portrayed realistically in this novel even with the tiniest detail that the reader could view it as if in a movie in front.
Moncy Pothen's hero, Arjunan, is a typical village guy learns Hindu traditions and holy books like Bhagavad-Gita from his parents, in his childhood, and the ancient hero with his same name, Arjuna, inspires him. It is well explained how the unexpected events change his whole path of life when he decides to participate in the social reform. He involves in an extremist group by believing only an armed up rise of the common men would change the corrupt society. He is an educated man, with a respectable job, family and social status, sacrifices everything for the rescue of the exploited and the down trodden. When he returns from jail, regretful about his past, the society does not forgive him and allow him to socialise normally. His good deeds, importance and intention are being scrutinized for a long while.
A woman's helplessness when she looses all hopes in life; at the time of making difficult decisions; when she has to support others in distress and also when she has to choose between the right and the wrong: is shown clearly by the character Ahalya. How the power of woman can be rejuvenated by a node or a small support can be witnessed in the book at a later stage. The woman's role in the society is well explained with many woman characters and it proves without doubt that the woman is not a weaker section in the society and she can stand along side with man in every activity.
Human mind is described with expertise in this book. The way people think and react at life's different circumstances is highlighted realistically. Humour is also applied in various occasions as a part and parcel of the Kerala society. The countless characters in this book represents the cross section of a society, which includes members belong to the countless castes and creeds in India. Their life harmony and the way in which religious fanaticism tries to disrupt it are also explained well. It proves that extremism, whether it is political or religious, is harmful to the society and the common men always stand against that.
The Author shows that love is a combined feeling of security, courage, jealousy, possessiveness, oneness, sharing and caring. True love can face any obstacle when together. Even the smallest of things done for the other can make a big difference.
The unexpected ending of this story also makes it unique.
Review by a traditional Indian girl.......2006-03-28
First of all, as soon as I completed the last lines of the book, tears started rolling down my cheeks. I really wonder why it happened. I think the climax has such an effect on me because basically I am a traditional Indian girl and all Indian girls are same in their heart though some act as if they are not. Beneath the Clouds and Coconut Leaves is a realistic book which gives a good idea about the social and economic conditions of people in Kerala since independence and it wonderfully portraits the feelings of a female heart.
Ke Jin.......2006-03-26
I assume that this book will be a wonderful literary experience to the readers around the world. Mr.Pothen is a kind and nice person. He really impressed me with his story and his excellent writing skills.
Excellent .......2006-03-26
Mr. Moncy Pothen in his Novel, `Beneath the Clouds and Coconut Leaves,' narrates, with ease, the rhythms of uncared, stranded lives in bitterness since the dawn of independence.
In his entire story, he spotted the starving world for love with its human touch in real life. Through out the tale, the panoramic expressions are the aerial outcome of the true nature with the living world and the ecosystem.
We can see the pompous days of feudalism are ending and a new age of scarcity or humbleness awakening and it is the hero, an unexpected source that was instrumental to the fall, comes for the aid with attempts to rescue. In the book, we experience the success of humanity above all the ideologies. It also portrays the political, social and cultural scenario in Kerala, the tiny South Indian State, in its true state.
I wish the domain made by the Author be a great success.
I'm sure the reader will be overwhelmed!.......2006-03-25
Those who lived in Kerala in the Sixties/Seventies would know what it means to be a Naxal. How many young men/women have sacrificed their lives on the altar of this utopian cause! How many families have suffered, some violently and some in silence! All for a cause that just fizzled out within no time and vanished from people's memory without a trace.
It's not a hitherto unexplored theme, but to my knowledge past initiatives have been in Malayalam language. Here Moncy uniquely portrays the life in a typical Kerala village, its social structure, its pulses and the swings. I'm sure the reader will be overwhelmed by the sentiments Moncy has successfully depicted without losing its innocence and flavor.

Customer Reviews:
A must read for training and presentations!.......2007-09-09
Robert Jolles describes all of the steps in running your own workshops and seminars or working in the training department. Writing your own book. Developing a process of training that helps the trainer and the audience. Visual aid management. Trainee evaluation. All of the steps are in a simple, easy to read book. There are also parts of the book that will help develop and improve skills for sales professionals.
to-the-point and well structured.......2007-03-12
The book is practical, clear and well written. The writer is clearly very experienced in the field. I like his matter of fact approach with a dry sense of humour.
Not as helpful as the title suggests.......2006-07-05
I bought this book hoping to learn one new thing - I don't want 'tricks' or 'secrets' and I don't need to impress anyone - just facilitate seminars which are effective and enjoyable for the participants. I searched for an idea, process or new way of thinking that I could use, modify and apply in my own work. Sadly, it wasn't there for me. The style and content is not consistent with the title. The style is over-confident - the "know-it-all" style, characteristic of some American texts. The author presenting his opinions as fact. There's no doubt, no alternatives, just do it my way and it will be 'right'. Apart from this approach, some of the content is unhelpful at best. For example his comments (opinions) on how to prepare and use visuals in presentations reiterates the worst habits - more bullet points! As the title suggests the author is writing for people who already know something about this well-worn subject, I would have appreciated buying something more original, less emphatic and better written. I regret buying it.
A MUST READ FOR SALES TRAINERS.......2004-05-19
From Joe Catal, author of the book "Telesales Tips From The Trenches".
As a national sales trainer who teaches people how to sell by phone, this book is an incredible read. There's a huge difference in telling someone a sales technique and teaching that technique. The book covers every situataion you may encounter and answers it on a psychological and practical level. I consider myself a very good public speaker and my evaluations normally come back as excellent. After reading this book, I had to rate my seminar a C+. If you've been struggling with your training this book will be a Godsend for you. I'd like to personally thank the author for teaching me the right way to give a seminar. This is a must read, and I'd be shocked if you read this book and your seminar didn't improve 100%.
The BEST!!!.......2004-01-26
After receiving this book I read it straight through in 2 days. Absolutely the best information for any trainer. Robert does a tremendous job of detailing just about everything a trainer needs to know. I highly recommend this book. I also purchased 2 other books at the same time - I probably won't even read those now. Get it - you WILL enjoy it!

Science fiction and fantasy combine to create a stunning tarot deck and book set by Karen Kuykendall, situated in a distant place known as the Outer Regions, where people have a mystical rapport with cats. Book is 192 pp. Ill. (pb).
Customer Reviews:
Best Deck Ever!.......2007-03-13
I purchased this deck back in 1997. It's the best deck I've ever used. There is a cat on ever single card, and the cats seem to give more meaning to rest of the imagery. The backs of the cards have a really nice hypnotic design that almost reminds me of the artwork of Shag (google him if you don't know who he is).
I've used this deck for countless readings, and the results are always detailed and insightful. The booklet that comes with the cards is interesting, but I never use tarot card booklets. For me, it's better to study the imagery on the cards and deduct my own meanings.
Booklet or no booklet, these cards are great.
Great!!.......2007-03-09
I love love love this deck. It is a beautiful piece of artwork, and a definite for cat lovers, but it is much more than just a sum of the artwork. No matter what card, there is always a feeling of hope associated with this deck. I was amazed at how much of a difference this deck made in my readings, until I misplaced it, and has to wait for a new deck to arrive from Amazon. I would recommend this deck to ANYONE and EVERYONE with an interest in the tarot. First time readers should not be concerned that the deck will lose them, it lends itself well to readers of all levels.
Absolutely not for beginners.......2007-01-31
I bought this deck many years ago- and though I've bought many since, it remains a trusted friend and companion. Though I can't speak for this precise printing of the set (mine were printed in 1984- this is a reissue so I can't speak for the color quality or stock quality)- I can talk of its general performance.
Though this deck was my first venture into Tarot, I strongly advise if you are new: You may wish another deck. This is highly a fantasy deck- relying on you having already understood some of the most basic symbolism inherent to the cards. The elemental symbolism of the suites is heavily downplayed though still present- one must look close to catch the meanings beyond those simply laid out in a laundry list in the book. However, in a rare turn around, the artist took into account the fact some suites represent certain aspects of a person's physical features as well and honored them in the designs of the humans in this deck. If you are someone who generally has a hard time picking a card to represent the questioner- that aspect at least is made easy.
There is also the major arcana to take into account- some of which are changed from the more typical 22 cards seen in a Waite style deck. The Heirophant has become the High Priest- while Judgement has become Rejuvenation. Beyond that odd seeming swap around, the Major Arcana are very easy to understand and interpret by their art alone- the minor arcana however are much more difficult. In these you see this is by in large a story deck, bordering on novelty. The cards retain their meaning and symbolism, but it's presented in odd ways that are sure to throw a new reader.
I know it certainly took me a very long time to get the hang of it, having this be my first deck...though now it remains one of my most beloved decks.
Cat Deck.......2006-03-03
Interesting cards. The artwork is unusual and eye catching. I like what the card description says. A must have for tarot card collectors and for cat lovers.
Beautiful and Mysterious.......2004-10-02
This is a beautiful, intruiging, fantastical, and yet adorable tarot card set. I love it. While I don't own any cats myself or consider myself a true "cat fanatic," the imagery of the cats on these cards is mysterious and yet quirkily adorable. I would recommend this set by all means.

Book Description
This dark story of lies, intrigue, plots and counterplots deals with Nazism and Hollywood, with adoption, with child abuse, with the anti-war movement of the 1960s, with the ballet world, and with official criminality.
In 1947, a young woman travelled from Holland to London and went through a pregnancy in secret, living and working amid a ballet company. Two years later, in 1949, she began an acting career and gave her child away to another young actress on the London stage. The mother was Audrey Hepburn, and in a few years she was famous. Her son, meanwhile, had been taken to America by his English adoptive mother and her husband, a U.S. military pilot who was stationed in England. He grew up in secrecy in Maryland. He was named Stuart Byczynski, and this book is about Audrey's life, her son's birth and adoption, and Audrey's conflicted and menacing behavior toward him.
Not a photo book, this work explores the dark side of Audrey Hepburn's career, revealing new information about her and correcting some of the misinformation in the existing literature.
To make her career in films, Audrey had to suppress any information that she had had a child, as well as her family ties to the Third Reich during WWII. She interfered with the author and arranged for minor Hollywood people to enter his life as acquaintances in order to gather information. In her final years, in the aftermath of the publicity about Joan Crawford's parenting, Audrey did volunteer work for Unicef, perhaps out of guilt over her own abandoned child, but more likely to polish her public image. This book is the kind of thing Audrey dreaded, and it was originally intended for publication while she was alive.
Customer Reviews:
Worthless nonsense.......2005-01-16
In this hyper-world of gotcha this ranks right up there with the sightings of Elvis. This trumps all including the Vegas odds makers who likely would rate an Elvis sighting a better bet! Why in the world would anyone publish such rubbish? Money it seems, trumps all; including proper respect for one who led an exemplary life and is not here to defend herself. In a word, SHAME on any one who gives support, moral or financial, to this trash.
Don't believe a word in this book.......2003-07-15
Unfortunately the author has picked Audrey Hepburn as his mother- he should have picked Greta Garbo or somebody like her.It would have been more fitting.Audrey's life was full of sad and unhappy experiences and certainly did not lead the life like this author says she did. I am very disappointed that the world has people that write trash like this.
Paranoid egocentric conspiracy trash.......2003-02-20
This guy blah, blah, blah's forever without producing any substantial evidence. He blames Audrey Hepburn for the abuse from his adoptive parents. Plus, he think she has controled every aspect of his dismal life--from his jobs to his girlfriends. He writes in circles. He never says anything. He is delusional--a conjoined twin separated after his birth? Audrey Hepburn's son? He wishes his life was interesting--his fiction isn't.
Secret Life Indeed.......2001-10-17
This is a secret life Audrey Hepburn led only in the author's deluded mind. I bought the book because I was curious. After a few pages, I wished that, further than reading the back cover blurb, I had flipped through the book to glean some of the choice accusations, then I wouldn't have wasted the money. As another reviewer puts it, I too can't believe the audacity of the publisher to have endorsed such garbage.
Of course it's not outside the realm of possibility that a young, then unknown actress might have had an unwanted pregnancy... but the author is clearly quite insane when he claims to be a victim of unsuccessful attempts of assasination commissioned by his 'mother' not to mention the possibility of his being the result of possible Nazi experiments performed on Hepburn with her knowledge.
Stuart Byscynki needs professional help and he should get it quick!
A waste of a book.......2001-08-16
This "biography" doesn't even deserve one star. It is filled with ridiculous fantasies of the author. Do not even attempt to take this book seriously, as it is complete and utter nonsense. I can't believe that anyone would have the audacity to publish this type of garbage.

Book Description
The Diggers shared a collective vision of a common ownership of the land. Among the themes explored in these essays are the power and continuing influence of Winstanley's writings, his ideas on civil liberty, the economic and political background against which the Digger's operated, their treatment at the hands of their opponents, their attitude to women and family, and the role of the Bible in their thinking.
Customer Reviews:
A significant scholarly overview.......2005-01-03
This volume brings together papers from a Winstanley conference held in 1999 to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Digger project. The essays are valuable for setting out clearly what can and cannot be known about Gerrard Winstanley, as well as making thoughtful comparisons with figures as diverse as John of Patmos, Milton, Blake and Marx. A couple of the papers expand upon the more general social context in which Winstanley acted. That said, these are conference papers by academic historians; literary gems they are not. Important reading, useful reading? Yes. Inspiring or inspired? Ah, no.
