5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guidebook.......2003-02-27

I practically wore this book out during my 2 week trek through "The Top End" - Darwin, Litchfield, Katherine and Kakadu. It was extermely helpful in deciding where to go, what to see, and where to stay. All the supplemental reading was very useful and entertaining as well. Go Lonely Planet!!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as some other LP guides.......2000-09-24

The Northern Territory of Australia is one of the world's most facscinating places to visit. Kakadu and Litchfield are superb national parks with stunning landscapes and further south things like Devil's Marbles and Ayers Rock are breathtaking. Of course, the whole journey of about 2500 miles from Darwin to Alice Springs along the Stuart Highway is an adventure.

The LP guide gives a lot of good tips on where to stay and what to see. The information, as usual, is accurate and certainly helps to get around. It contains a lot of interesting "extra" information on things like Aboriginal Art etc.

However, the book misses out on quite a few things which you can see and do in the parks and villages you visit like e.g. the gold digger in Pine Creek who for the "gold museum" in Pine Creek where we could "find" our own gold.

The best thing is to take a couple of books. During the long ride there is plenty of time to read. The LP guide is not an appetite wetter, but it is a very good tool for planning your trip and should not be missed out.

          Book Description

In Limbo, award-winning journalist Alfred Lubrano identifies and describes an overlooked cultural phenomenon: the internal conflict within individuals raised in blue-collar homes, now living white-collar lives. These people often find that the values of the working class are not sufficient guidance to navigate the white-collar world, where unspoken rules reflect primarily upper-class values. Torn between the world they were raised in and the life they aspire too, they hover between worlds, not quite accepted in either. Himself the son of a Brooklyn bricklayer, Lubrano informs his account with personal experience and interviews with other professionals living in limbo. For millions of Americans, these stories will serve as familiar reminders of the struggles of achieving the American Dream.

          1 out of 5 stars Explaining U.S. social classes.......2007-08-20

This book was an eye-opener for this non-college grad who holds a very white-collar, upscale position.
A must-read for anyone who wants to understand the social strata in today's society. And for anyone who
thinks a chasm doesn't exist between those who "have" -- and the rest of us.

NOTE: This was supposed to be a 5-star rating. I'm new at this....... DUH.

4 out of 5 stars Ties that Bind.......2006-11-05

America's official narrative says we're a classless society of strivers who make the crossing from humble beginnings to high achievement through effort, brains, and character. In fact, sociologists say with increasing frequency that where you start out on the socioeconomic ladder is the biggest determinant of where you'll end up: well-heeled parents count more than good brains or good character.

But there are people who have crossed over from the working class to the middle class. These men and women are the focus of Alfred Lubrano's well-written, insightful book on blue collar kids who clambered up the class ladder. How many are there? According to Lubrano, about a quarter of the 42 million manager/professionals in the American workforce are straddlers - college educated offspring of blue-collar parents. At some point in their working lives, most Americans have probably worked with or for a straddler.

Lubrano asserts that straddlers are caught in a no-man's land between their working class upbringing and their middle-class adult lives. They don't fit comfortably in either place, existing in a sort of class limbo. Their sense of difference starts as children; they're the wierdos who like to read and waste their time talking to teachers and other adults. The decision to go away to college alienates them further from their tightly-knit families. At college, they work to pay the freight, and watch with envy as their middle-class peers game the system and have ample time to goof off. On the job, straddlers struggle to suppress the blunt honesty that characterizes working class interaction and to master the shuck and jive of corporate meetings. On the battlefield of love, straddlers tend to seek out and marry one another - only in each other do they seem to find a marriage of true minds.

It sounds difficult, and it often is. What makes people want to storm the class barrier? Besides polling the experts, Lubrano interviews dozens of straddlers about the texture of their past and current lives. Some of them had an instinctive desire for a life freer or more interesting than what they grew up with. Others wanted better paying or higher status work than what their moms and dads did. Many of their wounds are surprisingly raw, even after they've successfully landed in the middle class. The straddlers who made the transition with the fewest visible scars seem to integrate their experiences into their personality rather than letting themselves be defined by the social labels others try to pin on them.

The payoff is that many straddlers feel that they're physically and psychologically tougher than their middle class counterparts, and more resilient in trying times. Lubrano has done all straddlers a service by shining on light on this overlooked segment of the population. Whether you are one, married one, or work with one, you'll learn a lot about this tough, proud, unsettled subculture.

          5 out of 5 stars Well researched & written!.......2006-09-08

I was born into a blue collar family in 1941, on Long Island. Lubrano was born into a blue collar family @ 1945, in Brooklyn. He graduated from Columbia, beginning a succesful career in journalism. I graduated from Harvard, becoming a lawyer. He writes with true authenticity: mothers, fathers, siblings, neighborhoods, gangs, Italian - American culture, Brooklyn vs. Manhattan, food, mating, etc. Since we have such similar backgrounds, I was able to appreciate the veracity & intimacy of much of what he wrote & felt. I recognized my family & that of my ex-wife on many pages. My 2 sons? They only appeared at the end of this book, born into much better financial circumstances. For those of a similar background, you will recognize yourself, repeatedly, occasionally with a sentimental tear. He terms blue collar types who emerged into the American middle class, or more "Straddlers". It was interesting to learn how so mnay Straddlers has made successful or unsuccessful adjustments to American middle class life. Lubrano has assembled a skilled resource team. Overall, an unusual subject & extremey well done.

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book.......2006-08-19

I am from an area called the Monongahela Valley (Mon Valley), just south of Pittsburgh, PA. The Mon Valley historically has been known for its blue collar roots, since the largest steel mills in the nation were located there. Steel workers made a lot of money, but had traditional "start from the bottom and work your way up" attitude. Once the mills closed down, the children of this area knew that we better go to college (any college) to succeed. Our parents were afraid that once we did experience college, we would never come back. Mon Valley kids weren't given the same treatment that kids in more exclusive suburbs received. Yet and still, we were and will continue to be(Joe Montana, Donora, PA; Tamara Tunie (Law and Order, Homestead, PA, Dr. Dorothy Height, Rankin, PA, etc.)

Like the author stated, blue collar people have an "In Your Face" persona; they will be successful and outperform you, and outsmart you to SPITE you. This is so very true in the Mon Valley.

I facilitate a leadership program at a university. The issue of social class is studied in terms of how people of different social classes lead. The students are fascinated by the traits that are displayed by leaders in different groups. After these sessions, I am amazed by how many students come and talk to me about their personal experiences and what it is like to be a child of a straddler or being the first one to go to college in their family.

This book talks about the ambivalence of straddlers, in one sense, we are extremely proud of our values and work ethic, on the other hand, we do experience a sense of shame. It is hard to explain, we love our families, but we experience extreme scrutiny and judgement from them when we are successful. As stated in the book, African Americans have an even more tremendous hardship because there is a push to pull up another member who isn't doing as well, the old "Each one teach one" adage, that frankly drives me crazy on occasion.

It is a painful read for straddlers, I cried, I laughed, I snickered, and I scoffed. I haven't read a book in my lifetime that affected me in this way.

5 out of 5 stars So true that my heart raced.......2006-01-13

Be warned; if you are a Straddler (Lubrano's word for those from blue-collar origins who must negotiate a white-collar world), this could dredge up some painful memories. That there is safety in numbers is not always a consolation when one must confront again the situations and attitudes (from both incredulous blue-collar peers and oblivious white-collar colleagues) that segregate the Straddler from both blue-collar and white-collar culture. I literally felt pain when I read this book. It's not always a fun read, but it is refreshing and highlights an overlooked fact: though we Americans romanticize "up-by-your-bootstraps" stories, one's colleagues will often display astonishment, and even distaste, to find out that you were actually one of "those people" who pulled yourself up.

The text is well written and thorough, providing a solid history of the garden and its owners, plant listings, a charming map and visitor info. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Definately one to keep.......2007-05-09

This book has many wonderful images and lots of inspiration for your home. The only thing you might want to know is that the ideas are best for those who own their own condo or a small house. Renters might be inspired by this book but probably wouldn't be able to implement most of the ideas.

I found the book very inspiring. The pictures in this book were meant as examples to push and inspire your imagine instead of taking a cookie cutter approach. The book also provides principles and strategies on how to implement your own ideas. However, the pictures provide primarily a modern and contemporary perspective for those of you who are die heart country chic or traditional.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book with Good Ideas.......2007-01-29

We recently bought a new condo and found this book helpful in planning how to organize and arrange our new condo. Living in a big city we've always been strapped for space and the time needed to organize. I think Atkins does a good job giving advice on how to purge and ideas on how to maximize space. My only compliant about design guides (either this book or magazines) is that they tend to show spaces that rarely resembles the cookie-cutter condo look that you often buy into.

5 out of 5 stars Small Spaces, major possibilities!.......2007-01-24

This book is fantastic! Unlike a lot of books on the market, it will really help you develop YOUR OWN space to suit YOUR OWN wants, needs, and taste.

The first few sections are devoted to helping you really examine your own living situation: What are your basic needs for your space? What are your not-so-basic needs and wants that will make your space suitable to you? Now, what have you got to work with? How is the space defined? What are your limitations on changing it? And, how would you like it to look? Atkins asks very clear cut questions that will help you evaluate what you and your home are capable of.

The next few sections are on basic design principles that work in any area. Use of color, lighting - both natural and artificial, furniture, and your own home's architectural features (doors, walls, windows) are explored.

Finally, every room in the home is given it's own chapter. Every nook and cranny is scrutinized for maximum use of space. From layout to furniture to walls and floors, there is helpful advice on EVERYTHING. Large, colorful photos and examples abound; and there are even case studies that show a room and explain why and how it works.

There are a few things about this book that I think put it above others in the same category. First, it really does help you evaluate what YOU are capable of in your own space. Second, there are helpful hints in the sidebars on nearly every page, which can be quickly referenced time and time again. And third, it covers areas that are often overlooked by other design books, such as hallways, stairs, and the occasional terrace.

For someone who can only afford a new coat of paint to those about to take on a major renovation, anyone can and will find some useful advice in Small Spaces for Modern Living.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive look at designing for small spaces.......2005-01-23

Over the years I've collected quite a few books on designing for small spaces. What I really like about this title is that it combines the best features from the wide array of books available on this subject matter. It doesn't just present you with intriguing ideas and cool photographs; it also provides important design concepts, so you truly understand the design solutions presented. The book starts with assessing and planning your space, then discusses a variety of applicable design styles (rather than just the often-sterile, minimalist/modern look so many books feature!), room-by-room ideas, and options for special circumstances (such as an attic or galleried space). The book is also laid out very well and is a joy to read and reread. My only complaint is that I wish there were photos of every idea mentioned!

This book is slim, only 80 pages and lacks the depth and detail of larger books. Those looking for photos of rooms will find themselves wishing for more. The information, while useful, isn't anything unique or special. While this book will give you some basic guidelines, you could just as easily find the same type of info online or in a larger, more comprehensive book.

A good beginning book. Not to impressive for a connoisseur of interior decorating and design books, but a good read nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars stirring and inspirational.......1999-12-23

I found this paperback clearance priced at $5. This is a book that is part history, and partly inspirational. It tells in a series of vignettes the stories of 64 Germans who resisted the Nazis and paid the ultimate price for it. Some are famous, some are not. Many of these sketches quote from their letters and diaries as they faced death: Eastern Front soldier Michael Kitzelmann was horrified by what he saw done in Poland after the German invasion, and quickly became an opponent of the regime. He was eventually executed for undermining morale. From his diary, as he awaited execution:

"I pray to Jesus the Crucified, who has led the way through the most bitter pain. And He answers me: 'If you will be My disciple, take up your cross and follow me.!'

"But I appeal to Him: 'Lord, I am still so young, too young for such a heavy cross; I have not lived my life, all my hopes, plans and aims are unfulfilled.' And he says: 'Behold, I too was young, I had yet to live my life, and as a young man I carried to cross and sacrificed my young life.'"....

"Now I live the life of a hermit. My day's work consists of praying, reading the Bible, occasionally scribbling something in my diary or writing letters. It is very painful, this separation from life, from the past, from all fond hopes and plans and particularly from my nearest and dearest. It is terribly hard to submit wholly to God's will in such agonising circumstances; but the only attainable comfort is to hold out to the end despite all suffering...."[pp. 30-31]

Motivations were varied: some were young socialists; some were conservatives, appalled by the horrors of what the Nazis were doing in the name of the German government; most were Christians who recognized the Nazi movement for what it was. From the Nationalist Party's Ewald von Kleist-Schmenzin's 1932 pamphlet against the Nazis:

"Religion alone stand between us and National Socialism, and always will. We believe that faith in God and obedience to His Word must permeate our public life; National Socialism holds a fundamentally different view, and let me say that questions of dogma have nothing to do with it. What it comes to is that Hitler regards as the basis of policy- the fact that he may occasionally say something else does not alter the case-the race and its demands. This is a crude form of materialism, and quite incompatible with Christianity. According to his theories, it is the duty of the state to encourage not ability, but racial characteristics. He reduces the state to the level of a cattle-breeder, and shows that he is quite incapable of understanding its character and obligations....

"What have we in common, spiritually, with National Socialism?"[p. 168]

Many of these were men and women whose only crime was to speak against evil, but many were men and women of action as well. Some were participants in the von Stauffenberg plot against Hitler. One of the socialists, Anton Schmaus, expected problems from the SA (brownshirts) early in the Nazi regime:

"[T]he SA forced their way into the house late that evening. They kicked his mother, who barred their way, and knocked her down. Anton was woken by her cries for help and found himself at the top of the stairs confronted by the SA. He told them to get out of the house, otherwise he would shoot. They took no notice, and closed in on him; and so as a last resort he pulled out a pistol. According to the police report of 5 July 1933, File No. IAdVI, three storm troopers were badly wounded and later died in hospital and a fourth was fatally wounded by a shot from one of his companions."[pp. 4-5]

Schmaus turned himself into the police, hoping for a proper trial. The SA demanded Schmaus from the police, who still had the courage to refuse the SA demand. The police escorted Schmaus to Berlin police headquarters, but along the way, 30-40 SA surrounded Schmaus and his police escort, and shot and killed him.

The individual steps forward from the ranks to sacrifice himself for others: this is the theme which emerges from the photographs taken at the trial, which underlies this whole story of resistance to tyranny, which is the embodiment of the Christian spirit and which finds expression in the great part played by the Christian Churches in the struggle with National Socialism. After describing the formation of a movement that called itself "Protestant National Socialists" or sometimes "German Christians," Leber describes how the Nazis took advantage of a widespread desire within Protestant Germany to unify the existing denominations:

"But it soon became clear that [the Nazis] regarded the Churches as useless bourgeois institutions and merely hoped to exploit them for their own purposes and to present the picture of the progressive assumption of power in a pseudo-Christian frame.... In May 1934, at a synod in Barmen, the Confessional Church was founded. This was not a territorial Church, but a movement within the Protestant Church to counter the false doctrines which threatened it. At this point the regime dropped even the 'German Christians' and from then on state measures were directed not at the reconciliation of the Church with the National Socialist Weltanschaung, but at the subordination of all things Christian.

"The attempt to oppress the Catholic Church was at first a little more circumspect and the negotiations which followed the Reich Concordat of 1933 gave some protection for the time being. But attacks on the Church, and the persecution of those who professed allegiance to it, steadly increased; and the Papal Encyclical With Grave Concern, which was read to the faithful from the pulpits in 1937, was tantamount to a declaration of war. Both Churches suffered confiscation, restriction and persecution, and both challenged the policies and ideologies of the state. They opposed the biological creeds and the idolising of the German people. They protested against the Oath of Allegiance and its claim to impose unconditional obedience not to God, but to man, and against the anti-Christian teaching given to the young, the arbitrary methods of the Gestapo, the horrors of the concentration camps and the ill-treatment of the population of occupied territories. They also protested most violently against the murder of incurables."[pp. 187-188]

Annedore Leber was there. She was the widow of the prominent Social Democrat leader Julius Leber, executed by the Nazis.

This is a fascinating and powerful work, well-written (or at least well-translated). It is history, and it is inspiring -- evidence that even in the darkness of Nazi Germany, where the full weight of the propaganda machinery of modern media was turned to the task of enforcing ideological conformity, there were those willing to do to fight against an evil that did not personally threaten them. We owe it to those who died in the defense of human dignity to not let these courageous men and women be forgotten. BUY THIS BOOK!
